I don’t like the original soundtrack being behind a paywall.
BUT i do think costumes being charged for is okay.
Personally i don’t think this is a case greed.
Especially since future game modes will be free. Games cost 60€ , which is alot. But i think games should cost way more.
Here the costumes are more an “option” to give more money (which should be present) WITHOUT stealing a part of the game locked away for people who don’t want to spend more money on the game
It’s not predatory, it’s not assholisch design and not greedy. In my opinion ofcource.
Aslong as it is skins and extra’s, i am okay with it.
Personnally, i have a few games i would have loved to spend 80€ on instead of 60€ and dlc money (like XCOM 2, Valkeryia Chronicles 4)
It’s just, no publisher will ever publish a game at 80€
So i’d like to know, would you have bought this game at 80€ (or 70€) if it had all it’s current dlc, knowing it will get more for free ?
I just think dlc feels worse, but publishers won’t risk selling at higher prices.
(I hate typing comments on my phone -_- why do i do this ?)

@@someitoj7591 It's greed. Costumes have always been part of the Resident Evil experience. It's not "extra." It's only extra because Capcom can charge you for it now and call it so. Resident Evil is a very popular triple A IP, there was no need for them to nickel and dime us on costumes. They sold 3 million units in 3 days. And their "free" DLC is just a replacement of the extreme battle mode that's missing from this remake despite Capcom having stated that all the modes will be included for free. So the way I see it, they just pushed the game out early, and made us wait for a mode that was meant to be in the game anyway.

      that's the problem in general.
A remake should always do more than improve graphics or gameplay.
A good and proper remake should fill in the plot points and smooth out flaws in the story.
This remake would have the chance to fix the problems of the original. That you really see in the B scenario that someone has been there before me. Which would be awesome if there was an NPC walking around the police station. If you're Leon, there's a Clair walking around and vice versa. MGS2 even had that on a small scale where you as Raiden Snake could see how he fought his way to his destination.

Yeah it was the same, and the fact that you can't choose a mode where you get one item in that location for both a-b sides, sucks. That was a cool idea in the original, and I've never played it. The game is at its best on the first scenario, and loses some traction in the second half, but still enjoyable none the less.

    • @lucklesscope8367
      @lucklesscope8367 Před 4 lety +22

Yes, yes. And people got sucked into gaming cuz games were made more and more casual.
Then a developer like From Software comes along and puts hard difficulty back on the map and suddenly, every 3rd game wants to be a hard game.
The old resident evil tank controls were more of a strategy move that you had to take into account. Camera angles added more to the horror elements of feeling trapped with unknown sounds going on outside of view, making it even more horrifying.
Heck, even RE4 had complaints of still being clunky cuz you couldn't move while aiming, so they even fixed that.
But Capcom kept going the casual and more action based route until even the casual players reacted badly to RE6.
And it keeps repeating with re7 being praised by old schoolers, re2r being praised by people who don't remember or never played original RE2 and then re3r where even casuals complains about re3r.
Is re3r another reset button or will they continue another step before reaching RE6 standards again?

There were no joysticks on the controller... So you didn't have a choice... You had to use the directional pad.. And that was what I got used to... I had a hard time controlling anything that used a joystick on the PlayStation because I had to learn how to control things using a whole new system... All over again.... So not everyone hated the tank controls.. I have no problem with them... And actually for some games i strongly prefer it.... Try to fast turn using the joys.. It's really a directional button combo from re3 and even re4 you can still use the directional pad... Tank control are simply what I'm used to... and in re 4 it's easier to fast turn..
There is fast turn on re 2 the remake... But it's Incorporated into the joystick... I haven't once been able to use it correctly... And I keep turning when I don't want to by accident... For me it's horrible... I strongly prefer the old pad controller for walking!!! If you use the joy to move... And try to fast turn you end up going round and round and round and end up facing the wrong way and usually getting whomped or killed.. So sorry.. I like the old controls... And they should have the pad or joy controls on any game as an option where you can choose which you prefer all the time... On all games.. That would solve a lot of problems..

I don’t play a lot of games but the Uncharted series and Jedi Fallen Order are miles better at the storytelling aspect of gaming than Capcom have ever managed.
In the 90s, the technical limitations of the time actually worked in RE2’s favour, or at least this forced them to come up with creative ways to set the tone and tell a story.
Namely, the environmental storytelling of pre-rendered backgrounds let you really soak in the atmosphere one room at a time. So often I’d walk through the police station and think “wow, what happened here!?”
The files would add to this, and the original game was free to reference the previous game because it was a direct follow up.

My problem with the game is that when you consider how much of the original content was consolidated, retconned, and omitted, they didn't do a very good job filling the gaps with new substance. The new A & B scenarios were a completely missed opportunity to improve the continuity. They didn't even need to break the bank like they did with RE6, all they had to do was shuffle some events around, split the puzzles and have some shortcuts appear in the back half of the campaigns that become explained when you play the opposite campaign. Just as an example, Leon didn't need to fight G1(and G2) imo, they could have easily replaced it with some sort of Tyrant themed encounter. (Maybe Leon gets chased by the Tyrant and it knocks over the cabinet that Claire later finds Sherry hiding behind, then Leon gets away from the Tyrant by triggering the lever that creates the gap in the scaffolding) Don't even get me started on how Claire and Leon both fight G2 at the exact same time to rescue Sherry and Ada, who are both trapped in the same room at the same time. Or how Annette dies like 3 times.
Tl;dr: You can really feel them struggling to stretch the budget. It felt like halfway through development they decided they wanted to get really ambitious with the project, but then quickly backed down from it when they realized how much it would bloat the scope of the game. It really starts to show when you play Scenario B and in the post-game content.

Apparently Capcom had mentioned a few months out from release that there wouldn't be any A/B scenarios and it'd all just be one, but fans flipped over it so they scrambled to get it in anyway.
I really like your idea though, I think they could've made that work with minimal changes to the place where Leon would fight G1. That staircase covered in barrels for example could be open instead, maybe you'd need to find a key to get the crane working, then X comes out and you have to run away from him, pulling down those barrels and that shelf to get enough time to get the crane in place before rushing across.
I don't know if X is smart enough to use computers, but the key could be left there and now you have the reason why it works for Claire and she fights G1 instead. Then you just flip them for the other scenarios. It sounds relatively simple, though you might need to add in obstacles in the machinery area to keep it interesting for Leon.

My point is that it is established within RE lore that there were multiple Mr. X type tyrants, so it's really not much of a theory to say there could have been two of them stalking around the police station. However, it's ultimately pointless to try to make sense of it in the first place because the remake's two "runs" are more akin to alternate tellings rather than two interweaving plot threads and, as a result, we aren't expected to reconcile the two "scenarios"--long story short, there's no reason to try to justify the "multiple Mr. X" theory in the remake, as both stories cannot have happened simultaneously as presented in the game. If anything, any future RE games that refer back to the remake will probably only refer to Leon and Claire's specific plot points (Ada and Ben for Leon, Sherry and Irons for Claire) while glossing over everything else as some sort of "we were both there for the other stuff" thing. A.) They didn’t all look exactly the same and Capcom incorporated at least a few cosmetic differences to illustrate the random chaotic nature of the G-Virus (like maybe when you blast away that outside hunk of flesh, a massive heart or lump of brain matter might occasionally be revealed, instead of it always being a giant eye).
B.) They didn’t poison you, since I always found that more appropriate for monsters like giant bugs and the poisonous Ivy variants, if those were actually included.

I feel like Capcom is trying to reboot the series lore with all these subpar “remakes.” While completely forgetting to acknowledge canon lore and og games, and somehow try to weave in this new universe with the 7 & 8 game lore.
The main issue is that RE has gone mainstream, so mainstream that it’s way passed the video games. Literally like most people nowadays know about RE from the life action movies, RE4 and these resent games (RE7 onward). This means Capcom has long given up on accommodating the hardcore RE fan base that has been playing since the PS1 days. They’re pandering to the masses in every aspect, to the point that no modern RE game has every core characteristic that makes Resident Evil, well, Resident Evil.
I’m not that type of person to say the og games are perfect and that RE should only be fixed camera and static backgrounds and tank controls, although an option for the latter should always be included. But god damn have we strayed from what separated RE from any other horror, horror/action, suspense games.
I won’t get into all the aspects of how bad these new iterations of RE are when compared to the originals, passed the whole ignorant and naive “but muh graphics bruh.” :|
But just the fact that you now have to select Hardcore difficulty to be able to use ink ribbons to save the game, A FUCKING FUNDAMENTAL AND CORE ASPECT OF RESIDENT EVIL, single-handedly proves that RE is no longer the same, down to its core, and that Capcom has long given up on appealing to the original fans and put the generation of profits over making good RE games that are actually RE games & not these wannabes.

You're forgetting the biggest element about boss fights that makes them awesome in the original:
    The grueling sounds and suspenseful transformations, including a very small detail i only recently noticed;
Where when fighting G2 and you hurt him enough, before he stumbles and the fight ends, the original head struggles to take control back from the virus.
Along with the unexpected surprise made you ask yourself " how the heck am I gonna kill this?!"
Even if the boss fight was just pull out big gun and shoot.
Not only that but honestly I prefer the original G4 because even though the body is being destroyed and regenerated the evolutions are purposeful.
In the remake they opted for the degeneration instead, when it was only prominent on G5.

Completely agree. What I can't get my head round is the new Canon, we've always been told its Claire A and Leon B. But in this game Claire B Leon A feels much more canon! I think the A/B component was put into this game late as I believe they originally did a way with it. I think my issue is it felt more basic and linear than the original, I feel like they could've took tips off RE7 in regards to the puzzles and the replayability factor of being able to take different routes to complete a task. I also believe this game felt very short and the environment around the character never came to life as the path to take was very narrow. With this in mind, I believe they deviated from the original police station layout too much.
A point if I may about the characters. I believe in the remake they make the characters digestible in a Hollywood style way, as opposed to the video game way in the original. With chief irons and Anette, there's build up and running around to complete puzzles before character depth is revealed. It's just very quick. Also, Kendo was one of the most iconic scenes in the original. Meeting him happened right off the bat and the seriousness of the zombies breaking through added to the threat. Again, kendo was 'Hollywoodised' and given a daughter and 1 cutscene. They went for something different. But that should've been left alone and serviced to the fans with respect.
In a sense, this game felt rushed. Just a few tweaks and minor improvements, RE2 remake could've competed with the original.

Here's another thing the original game got right that the new one got wrong, the cars for the time period. The police cruiser most closely resembles a 77-90 Chevrolet Impala/Caprice (box shaped body). By '98, if any of those were still being used, they were few and far between. Most by that time had either leftover '91-96 Chevrolet Caprice (with their distinctive round body design) or 92-98 Ford Crown Victorias. Even if this department had the "box Chevys" there are a couple more errors like the car having a console shifter vs. a column shifter (if there were console shifters in that era of Impala/Caprice, they were rare and not frequently chosen by police departments as column shifters are specially made for many modern police packages which are not even offered on civilian models versions. Also, the key fob used to open the truck is a combination of key and fob as one piece. Domestic cars didn't start to offer such a thing until the mid 2000s. A box era Impala/Caprice had the square key (ignition) and round key (doors and trunk). The other white cars with more rounded styling most closely resembles a 06-14 W-body Impala, a more accurate choice would have been to style it more closely to the 95-99 Chevy Lumina (also a W body) which was offered in a police package (just not a very common one at the time).

If I were to summarize my opinion below...
      *Things Done Better In Original*
1.) The A/B campaigns offering a far greater variety of alternate scenarios and subplots (whereas the only differences in the remake are alternate beginnings, alternate enemy/item/puzzle arrangements, and the G5 battle being withheld in First Run).
2.) Actual story continuity taking place between the scenarios, whereas the remake’s campaigns do not even at least pick one sequence of Leon/Claire events that line up.
3.) The original actual having a complete musical score that stands on its own, plus the save room and RPD main hall themes actually having a loop (though, whenever the remake does provide its own music, then I consider it more of a tie).
4.) Zapping system gave me a little more appreciation for the intricate level design, as subtle as each effect was.
5.) Quantity of enemy types: the remake cut out the crows, spiders, moth rooms, poison-buffed Ivies, etc., and while it did introduce Pale Heads and regular zombies with added armor/poison/packs/explosives, those new enemies are only found in Ghost Survivors.
      *Things Done Better In Remake*
1.) Quality of enemy types retained in campaign: I enjoyed fighting the zombies, zombie dogs, Lickers, G-Spawn, and Ivies a lot more and felt they were much more challenging and prominently utilized. At the same time, I do wish other enemies like the giant spiders got the same love.
2.) The boss battles were a lot more fun for me and I completely disagreed with Critical Nobody there (though the alligator could have been given more than one quick set-piece, like the RE1 Remake’s Mother Neptune). Mr. X in the remake was exactly the kind of pursuer I wanted him to be in the original, as well.
3.) The general combat and variety of weapons felt more fleshed out. This is especially with the addition of RE1 Remake-style defense items, the more detailed gun customization, the gunpowder system, the Flamethrower/Spark-Shot/SMG/Gatling-Gun having greater prominence, and the SMG having a suppressor to act like the silent bowgun. I also had a far greater incentive to strategize how I used them, with the more challenging cast of enemies/bosses.
4.) Sherry Birkin and Ada Wong having much more differentiated playable segments.
5.) General improvements to the controls and UI like the inventory management, map, movements, added achievements page, etc.
*I have not played the bonus modes of both games extensively enough to judge whether I like the Old Hunk/Tofu and Extreme Battle versus New Hunk/Tofu and Ghost Survivors more.*

or maybe half of what he says is either subjective or just plain false... the B scenario criticism being valid though. As an example, the bosses, I nailed Birkin with the crane first time without dying, where to stand to avoid it seemed pretty obvious as it's already in place when you start that fight.... I had also damaged him enough that it only took one hit with the crane. I also didn't need to waste that much ammo on any bosses as I utilised the knifes a lot. And this was still all on my first playthrough at the time. Just because _he_ had trouble with that fight doesn't mean everyone did.
His views on the characters personalities are also very skewed... as another example, Leon _tried_ to take charge in the original but no one ever listened to him... hence why one of his most frequent lines was "WAIT!" before exclaiming "why does no one listen to me". This guy just showed the very few specific scenes out of context of the rest of the story where Leon tries to be the man in control. Not to mention the whole part about Leon believing Ada to be FBI in the remake, this is the first time they meet so he has no reason not to believe her, especially as she shows some convincing fake ID to back it up... CN is acting like they already have a history and that Leon shouldn't believe a word she says.
He's correct about the B scenario snafu though, but as I said the rest is just subjective or just false claims to make the original look better, and I say that as a die hard fan of original RE2, it's still a game I play to this day and will always be one of my favourite games of all time.

I love Claire stepping up to the occasion, it's shows where her character is going. She's not just gonna run away or take it like a bitch. No she's gonna go to Europe to find her brother and fave Umbrella again, she's gonna go on to join a humanitarian group so she can jump back into biological war fare, and she's damn sure gonna take Birkin down. Claire is presented as a normal student, but Raccoon City brought out the best in Claire. True. That’s the one thing I don’t like about this guy’s RE videos. He glosses over finer details. Claire is a hard ass. She was basically raised by Chris after their parents died and he’s a bad son of a bitch himself. Instilling militaristic values into Claire at a young age made her who she is. Also, she’s a biker chick, enough said.

The fact that this needs pointing out is hilariously ironic. This is demonstrated in the original RE2 and CV/CVX; Claire is just as badass as Leon, with the only difference being that Claire is much more aggressive in her approach and personality, also demonstrating the clear relationship between her and Chris. This is nothing special, just good character development.

Good video, I appreciate the honest criticism. A couple things i disagree with are:
-The bosses, probably come down to personal preference, but I felt they were an overall improvement on the original. I think a lot of the bosses are influenced by the adaptive difficulty, so how many bullets it takes is largely down to how much ammo you have once you enter the boss arena. Like the original, they're kinda designed to be an ammo regulator, to make sure you aren't completely loaded with ammunition if you somehow managed to do a perfect run or something. These games are supposed to be about having limited resources, so having the bosses drain that is important to keep the tense atmosphere. If you don't like the adaptive difficulty, the good news is that Hardcore is available to make the bosses a pretty much set health and damage. Based on what you said, it just sounds like RE bosses aren't your cup of tea, both are valid criticisms.
-Claire fighting G3, this game makes a huge point of protecting Sherry. Claire wanted to take down (or at least delay) G3 so the antidote could get to Sherry on time.
-Character, Leon was always a naive chump. I always laugh at how many times Leon tries to talk to characters in the original and they just don't listen to him. They just presented it more realistically as a starry-eyed new guy instead of trying to take charge and failing. Don't let RE4's change in personality cloud who Leon actually was in RE2. Personal preference
-Brian Irons, I don't think he's completely generic like you say, BUT I think the original representation of him and his death is superior in the original.
-DLC, I agree with everything you said except that I don't think the classic soundtrack is entitled to every owner of the game. It's a bonus. Would be nice if it was included, but I don't think it being available for $3 is a problem since the new soundtrack is the intended experience.
-2nd Run, definitely a downgrade from the original. But I think it's more complicated than "why isn't there a scenario B with new stuff". This is a remake of a game whose time per playthrough is maybe 4-6 hours. From a modern game standpoint that really wouldn't cut it for most people, who will probably play Leon and call it a day. They had to choose between making sure the majority of bosses were playable with a single character to help the games playtime or cut the bosses in half for each character like the original. It's give or take, and they chose the latter. The actual 2nd Run could've had more remixed item placements, but I think the objective was to make sure there was a definitive canon route for each character to avoid confusion. Didn't work out perfectly, since 2nd Run still has a ton of continuity errors that are pretty glaring. But regardless of who you play first, the same characters do the same things at the same time in the timeline. As someone who just finished RE2 1998 again recently, I don't think that the continuity errors are any less dumb or glaring than the original, just in different ways. It's a symptom of adapting a story from the 1998 game that honestly made little logical sense in the first place. Scenarios was definitely a last-minute change, they had said for a long time there would be no B scenarios until close to launch.
-You're wrong about both playthroughs being the A scenario. Both are a mixture of each characters A & B scenario. Probably a writing error on your part, but I thought I'd point it out.
There might be more to say, but that's what I can say after watching the video. The game isn't perfect, and I enjoyed the presentation of the video. It wasn't pure cynicism or nostalgia based on admiring aspects of the game that never defined it over the core gameplay loop RE2R did a great job of replicating with modern mechanics.
EDIT: I've got to say, as respectful as I think this video is, you seem much more focused on the negative feedback of this video comparative to the positive and constructive criticism. It looks like a purposeful attempt to make people who prefer or enjoy the remake more than you look like idiots. I doubt that was your intention, but it certainly looks like you made this to bask in negativity to feel correct based on your statements on twitter. Sorry if that's a bit much, still think the video is a good dissection of what you didn't like

This is exactly the kind of video I would have made if I was able to make videos. I agree with most points, especially the criticism about the scenarios. But I'm surprised you didn't mention the thing where you can choose whether you take the bag or the machine gun with one character and leave one thing for the other. And the door you can open for the other char in the lab. Neat little things like that.
I thought the bosses were okay and not THAT spongy. Sure, they take a lot of bullets, but I thought that was just fitting. The boss with the crane was actually a first try for me, so I didn't really mind him that much.
But yeah, overall I still prefer the original game, even though I really love this remake. It's just a different style of game and it's totally fine by me if people prefer the new one.
