Resident Evil 3 is an ok game, but a poor remake.

Thanks a bunch for hearing me out! Please share your thoughts on the remake and how it compares to the 99' original.

Its GARBAGE. Although I think REmake 2 was pretty bad as well. Both games cant do what the original REmake did and thats put the PS1 games to bed. They either take functionality out (Zapping. Mercenaries mode). Mess up story details (Chief Irons. Jill. Leon being an idiot. The scientist chick. Nemesis). Or add in mechanics (OTS shooting) that, in the end, didnt add anything to the game because they hamstrung it for bad reasons (Durrr! it would be TOO EASY! LMAO. As if you couldnt limit ammo or add more enemies in!).
I just wanted a game that both paid respect to the source material and its gameplay, as well as maybe "a bit more". Instead the best we got out of this is Marvin is cool and a better Mr. X. Yay. Thats EXACTLY what we needed ALL ALONG./s God this was such a monumental disappointment and the series deserved better than this.

13:53 this really puts Leon from RE4 into perspective for me. Yeah he's a total campy badass that does some total anime bullshit like the room with the lasers, but ultimately he usually gets out of situations in that game with his actual skill which means he can back up his witty clapbacks with actual substance, meanwhile the times he actually had fuckups usually did affect him; When the rope on the boat latched onto his leg it legitimately sounded painful for him as he had to frantically cut at the rope. Once he got that cut from Krauser, the cut stayed on him for the rest of the game. When he gets infected with the plagas parasite, he legitimately gets taken over by it at one point and almost chokes his waifu Ada to death. And heck, if you get near Dr. Salvador he's not gonna get chainsawed on the shoulder and go "oof oof owie" and just clutch it with a limp like he woke up out of bed the wrong way, he gets his fucking head cut off.

Truthfully I don't think it will be good, or as good as RE4. Not with capcom's B team allegedly behind it.
They still have time to prove me wrong, I'm not _hoping_ it will be bad just for the satisfaction of pointing at it and going "REMAKE GAME BAD", I legitimately hope they learn from the mistakes of RE3 and it ends up being good.

    • @SilverSonic2099

Yes it was and the Outbreak games are canon too so that means Brad never bit Marvin which only proves both that the people who made this game knew little of RE lore and didn't care about it anyway(and there are many more inconsistencies that break canon in this "remake", that is far from the only one), they probably only ever saw RE2 and even then only the "remake" of RE2 and thought it would be so cool to show that to tie the games together. Also in the original RE3 Jill sees Marvin already infected and passed out in the police station since he had been bitten before Brad died anyway so even if you never saw or played Outbreak you can see from RE3 that zombie Brad would never have infected him.
This is just one of many details that prove that this "remake" is not canon in any way. Nor is the RE2 remake in my opinion, although that one at least tried to have the same story as the original.
As it is the Remake of RE1 is canon but you better disregard the reimaginings of 2 and 3 as little more than spin-offs inspired in the originals. Kinda like the missions in Umbrella Chronicles and Darkside Chronicles that relate to the original games are more retellings of the original games but reimagined to fit the gameplay and to give context to the new mission and should never be considered canon or substitutes for the actual original games, sure they are fun to play if you enjoy onrails shooters(and I love games like House of the Dead so I enjoy the Chronicles games very much) but the stories and events will break canon completely if you take them remotely seriously.

@marcus24000 Different strokes for different folks. Realy happy for you for enjoying the game. Part of my frustration I admit came from project resistance (maybe 60 to 70% if I were to put a number). That said, I didn't like the sequences that felt like a hallway (running from nemesis at the start, or at the tower while he flamethrows at you, or running from dog nemesis in the bridge in front of the clocktower). Felt like I was watching a movie rather than playing a game. I didn't like that from what I played, after you leave the sewers with jill, all you do is fight bosses. Between flamethrower nemi and dog nemi, there was the police station with Carlos. When I jumped back on Jill, I thought ok there is more exploration, and then you see the clocktower, and I was like, ok, some more exploring. I didn't expect to boss fight so quickly, hence why I didn't take the grenade launcher with me, and that fight is a hog if you don't have the mines. While there was a Carlos section in between, Jill's section felt too short of a rest in between boss fights.
I've played the original, it's my favorite RE game (yes, I like it more than RE4, which I feel doesn't follow in the spirit of the original RE games, and while a fun game, it is something different entirely). I know it is more action-oriented, but the remake felt more linear than the original. I intend to go back to it at some point and finish it, but in my frustration, I stopped playing, got Alien Isolation on sale for 2$, and started playing it. That one so far is a MUUUCH better experience in my opinion, so RE3R will have to take a back seat for now.

RE2 remake did end up being my personal game of the year last year, as i felt it was a perfect middle ground between classic RE and RE4. the behind the shoulder perspective and manual aiming of 4, with more metroidvania like level design, route planning, inventory management, and puzzles of classic RE. RE3r on the other hand feels like it leans more toward RE4, because it is much more linear and removes pretty much all puzzles. RE3r still had the same inventory management system from RE2r, but the more linear nature made it feel way less important. the most disappointing thing was nemesis. i was hoping he would just be a souped up Mr. X, but aside from one short section between the power station and subway, he really isn't like that. Nemesis is more of an entity that shows up for brief scripted chase sequences and boss fights. the section where Nemesis is kind of like Mr. X, isn't even close to as well done as Mr. X. Mr. X was slower, but the stomping around and having him just pop up out of no where was so damn exciting and tense in the first playthrough. Nemesis never feels close to as threatening. that said, RE3r was good, but definitely not worth full price. it felt more like a 20-30 dollar DLC campaign for RE2r.

Last year, that to me was easily the RE2 Remake’s biggest shortcoming (even more so than the incomplete new musical score and missing enemy types), yet it seems not enough people voiced that criticism to make those in charge of Capcom care enough to delay RE3 Remake, if they even got the memo.

That's a bit of an oversimplification. This was more the case for older games. By the PS1 era, you'll find that a major difference between then and now was that developers were often given ample time and freedom, and when we have a lot of content, it usually means the developers finished with time to spare, and came up with some mini-games that could recycle the existing assets that were already included in the game. Conversely, you'll find that some games were not finished with enough time left over to do this, and have comparatively minimal extras.

I genuinely thought "This is the best RE we got since Code: Veronica" when listening to Saudade after beating G5.
RE3make, however, doesn't have enough pros to outweight the cons and managed to fail at giving us a proper Nemesis of all things, easily the most iconic aspect of the third chapter. The characters and interactions are generally better, sure, the gameplay's great, seeing iconic creatures return is nice too, but it failed at too many other things to be acceptable, especially when considering it offers substantially less than the second.

A few things that I love about RE3R. Sasha Zotova is perfect as Jill. Evade function is great. The way Jill is written is great. Jaded yet still likable. Tough, but not invincible. Great chemistry between her and Carlos. Visuals are great.

    • @gabrielcaro
      @gabrielcaro Před 2 lety +4

Thought I’d give my two cents on things I agree/disagree with
-Sasha Zotova is a great model in general, but not a good character model for Jill Valentine (Jill’s ethnicity is part Japanese part French, her new character model makes her look too Russian. And of course, that’s because Sasha herself is Russian.)
-Evade function is a great feature. But to add onto that, I wish the same could be said about when the zombies catch you. In the original game, if a zombie caught you, you could tap a button rapidly to get out of the hold, but for some reason, that’s not the case here. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I feel no control over having to watch Jill get her neck eaten out by a random ass zombie every time she gets caught (unless she has a shiv).
      - While I can’t deny the fact that Jill’s character is “fleshed out” in the remake, a lot of that has to do with the fact that they rewrote her characters personality to fit this games grittier tone, which I honestly did not like. Jill being Jaded makes sense because of the Spencer Mansion incident, and she is certainly a tough woman in general, but she just comes across as obnoxiously cold and mean in this game which doesn’t make sense for her character. Jill is a kind and caring person who values human life, and she wouldn’t be so callous as to not simpathize even with members of “the enemy” that is the mercenary group of Umbrella. In this remake, she is immediately cold to them, even when seeing Mikial wounded. While this makes sense in the confines of this game, if you want to treat it as it’s own stand alone thing, it doesn’t make sense for her to act this way given the context of who she is from the other games that preceded this remake.
      - Her and Carlos do have good chemistry, but again, it doesn’t feel like Jill and Carlos. At least, it’s not really them. Carlos was much more suave, but Jill was dismissive of his advances, being cheeky with a “keep dreaming” one liner. But the core essence of that is not present in the remake, at least not at the start. In the beginning, Jill is much more hostile to Carlos. When saying surely she could douse out a few fires because she’s “a tall drink of water.” Her only reply was a simple “fuck you.” This doesn’t feel like the Jill I know, she’s never so outwardly hostile. And I know this’ll sound nitpicky, but even if she is, she doesn’t do something as immature as curse at them. But I’ve noticed in these remakes and the newer resident evil games, every character seems to curse like a drunken sailor and it feels… forced.
Again, as a stand alone thing, it’s an okay game, but as a remake of RE3 I believe it’s a disappointment. But no hate at all, good for you that you like it.

Then again, since Chris, Barry, and (presumably) Rebecca were all outside of Raccoon City at the time, it would have been impossible for Nemesis to even kill half of S.T.A.R.S. It seems like the original RE2 and RE3 backed themselves into a corner that way, plus Brad was already bitten by a zombie in the original and the most incompetent member to begin with.
So I honestly still do not know whether I consider it an improvement or downgrade, that Brad simply succumbs to his zombie bite and has that scene with Marvin in mid-transformation, which ties back to RE2 Remake and reminds me of Keeper’s Diary in RE1. It makes Brad himself a bit more interesting as a character for me... but it also removes the novelty of seeing Nemesis at least kill one S.T.A.R.S. member... even if he was the weakest of them all and doomed from the start regardless.

@@markcobuzzi826 Agree with you, honestly I like the Marvin Outbreak cutscene.
I think they can simply cheese their way outta this is to make Brad doing a last stand in Jack's Bar against not just zombies, but Nemesis (doable 'cause Nemesis is already been introduced earlier in Jill's apartment). Then he lost and got infected by Nemesis, later they can still keep the Marvin RE Outbreak cutscene.
In this way, they can have more screentime for Brad, justify his death, redeem his action from the mansion (by staying and buying time for Jill from Nemesis). They also can make Nemesis intimidating when he can ruthlessly complete his objective anyway he can. Also smooth out the chase scene in Jill's apartment so Nemesis don't just stop when he hit the backdoor, but burst through and continue to chase both Brad and Jill until Brad stop him at Jack's Bar.
And by this way they can highlight NE-parasite enhanced virus and Jill's resistance to the virus (Nemmy infect Brad, turn in just mere hours. Then Nemmy infect Jill, take more than half a day for her to begin turning). Rather than making the virus from a random zombie bite is even way more effective than virus from the Nemesis.

I think they could maybe shown Nemesis piercing Brad's belly with the tentacle, rather than his brain. Brad could feel that he is dead anyway from his zombie bite, so he might as well buy time for Jill by shooting at Nemesis. But Nemesis is smart enough to not waste too much time on Brad and just knock him out of commission, before continuing his pursuit of Jill. That way, you could have both the Marvin scene and a part where Nemesis interacts with Brad (maybe he could then impale Tyrell through the skull to make up for Brad's more tame run-in).
The only potential drawback I could see with this approach is that it could make Brad talking seem a bit more out of place. Rather than it just having Brad get infected and slowly transition from a living human into an "undead" zombie, allowing him to have a few final words when he is on the brink of turning... it would have Brad get infected by a zombie bite, be fatally wounded by Nemesis' tentacle piercing his belly, go into clinical "death", and then reanimate as a mutant zombie yet still be able to talk for a few more moments.

Sometimes all a remake needs is a fresh coat of paint and some quality of life additions. That said, I fully agree with your assessment of the original RE2 and 3 verses their REmakes. Both games had so much removed from them that they are barely recognizable, save for the more iconic elements. I feel the originals had a slow build of tension, and escalation of threats not seen in the remakes. There were also more subtle moments and character actions that further fleshed out the world and lore of Resident Evil and Raccoon city that were lost in the REmakes.
As for Perfect Dodging, I think there is a dialogue box that pops up quickly to explain it when the game explains dodges... but it's not well described.
Finally, I really, really dislike the new look for Nemesis. The trench coat look was iconic compared to the new melted body bag of the RE3make.

  • @mikel66661
    @mikel66661 Před 4 lety +8

I would add that the perfect dodge simply makes the game stupidly easy when you learn how to use it properly.
And that they pretty much elminated all the tension and horror by making Nemesis an annoying stalker intead the terrfying pursuer that he was in the original, eliminating ink ribbon on hardcore, making zombies weaker (even if more numerous) and making your character weaker on high dificulties (nothing better to increase tension than having you dying again and again in the same spot. Yep, it doesn't increase frustration or trivialize death, that increase tension). I mean, I expected that being a continuation of 2 remake, 3 remake was doomed to be less impactful, but they didn't even try, or went wrong on pretty much everything.
And man, what a day would the one Capcom make a well written entry. I know it is Resident Evil, but 7 was almost good in that aspect.

@@mikel66661 you dont get my point...the dodge you say makes the game TOO easy. And here comes my point.. IF YOU PLAY THE GAME ON HIGHER DIFFICULTIES THE DODGE MECHANIC IS ESSENTIAL. It doesnt brake the game at all. Now if you have the attention span of a 2 year old and cant master a game then that's your problem. The game has the higher difficulties for a reason. If you are a casual player that wants to play it once and never again then thats your problem...the devs want the player to have multiple Playthroughs.

@@LimitlessPotential12 well, if you implement a game mechanic that is only balanced around 2 hardest difficulties, which aren't even unlocked at the beginning, the you did a bad design. That mechanic shouldnt not break the game on the hardcore and still does it.
An sorry but your elitist opinion is both wrong and pointless. I play a game as many timed as I want and doesnt make me a casual player. And FYI, I have played various Resident Evil multiple times and still I dont care or want about challenge or matering the game, I revisit those game for the horror experience.

It was then that I realized how heavily scripted every encounter was, and all my enthusiasm for the game just died.
Remember when Nemesis is chasing Jill through the burning building? There's a save point on the top floor, just before the boss fight.
You can stop there for as long as you want EVEN THOUGH THE BUILDING IS ON FIRE. It's ridiculous!

I totally feel the same way and could not have expressed it any better. Capcom could have done so much more with RE 3 and if the vision is already being lost, I'm afraid for RE 4 remake.

while those changes are necessary, for both updates and modern days however removing everything that made the franchise or the original game special unique and appealing in the first place will leave the remake or reboot of resident evil 3 a poor successor that turns off fans old and new and veterans of the original resident evil 3 Executives can't expect people to automatically enjoy a work just because they slapped a beloved franchise's or original game name on it

    Remake:
build from ground up with new engine and some extras added. May include the latest mechanics from recent titles due to having built with the same engine. Some stuff are added to ease/fix the gameplay or to redo a level to fix mistakes or fill up something that was missing from the original game due to time constraint or technology. Sometimes remake is done based on how it was originally planned/intended to be so expect some stuff that was never get out of drawing board to be added.
    Remaster:
usually the original engine getting a full HD makeover. Engine's visual is cranked up to 11 & made for 16:9 ratio and new texture. Resolution are scaled for modern monitors or television. In some games, more polygons are added depending on the engine used and may have smoother gameplay than the previous version. In some cases, an updated derivative on the engine is used but retain the original content. Physics and animation are enhanced.
    Reimagining:
making the content cater to current gen gamers. Some new stuff added or removed in order to please the *mainstream* players. Expect some things to be toned down, altered or excised due to current social trend or standards.
Frankly that's how I see it imo.
