I really enjoy the distinction you draw between being a professional photographer and being a CZcams photographer; that's something I haven't seen anywhere else.
I pursued photography professionally for a few years, but just events/weddings, nothing through an agency dealing with brands.
But doing it for money killed the joy for me, so I changed gears and do photography mostly as a hobby now.
I probably shoot more today than I did back then. I certainly have a nicer kit nowadays than I did when I was a working photographer and had to justify every purchase.

I like photography as it has gotten me to look at the world differently than before, but I like to hear other people's thoughts on the different aspects of it; there are only so many landscape and street photographers you can listen to. I do however love photography, everything about it, both film and digital. It would be great to take a break from what I currently do and either become an assistant for a commercial studio to learn the industry in greater depth. So much about your journey resonates with me as an individual (and probably so many others), definitely food for thought and re-evaluating where I am and where I want to be. Just as you discovered that you love photography, and that you "are" a photographer when you stopped, so too does this "aha" apply to so many other things in life, including relationships. The key of course is either 1) be 100% sure that when you stop/quit something that you're certain or 2) always leave an opening to return (the idea of not burning bridges).
And I'll share another related idea... when people introduce themselves to strangers, they typically describe those things first that are most meaningful to them in terms of their identy.. Like, "I'm a food and lifestyle photographer in the UK, married with three kids, and I live near xxx". I say this because I had a funny experience with a client of mine. i should first say that I had a 30 year career as an engineer/manager and all the while had photography only as a hobby. After I retired I turned that into a part-time job (could be full-time but I don't want all the work). So a client was talking to me and described me as an "artist". internally I bristled a bit as i've always thought of myself an engineer, even in retirement. It's not that I think less of an artist, but that's just who I was in my own mine. So YOU are a photographer...and you realized the reality and importance of that when you temporarily stopped.

Hi Scott, I am an amateur photographer and have zero desire or intentions of being a professional photographer. The reasons I watch and follow your video's is yes I find the inside track on a professional photographers no bullshit reality check on the business fascinating, but mostly frankly for your no bullshit approach to life which is the main appeal. I watch and love the likes of Rick Beato, not because he is a professional now "youtuber", but because of his amazing appreciation for music and his unique character and passion for the subject. Much like Rick, the same for you and several others, I would listen to him if he went off and spoke about different things in life because I value the way he looks at things, and I intuit that if you made a video about something other than photography, I would find that interesting and a perspective worthy of consideration. Getting back to photography for a minute, for me it's totally personal, and my photographs are meaningful purely on that personal level; they engage me more and draw me to the moments and beauty of my life. And of course improving my technical and compositional skills makes it all the more enjoyable. That's what brought me here, but really I stay for listening to you as a person, a no bullshit person with great stories and perspectives much like Rick for example.
As a silly suggestion that you most probably would balk at, I would challenge you to go off and make a video about something else other than photography. For me the value of platforms such as youtube and others like Rumble and Odysee (which are far more liberal in honoring the outrageous notion of freedom of speech) - is the ability to find cool people who if they naturally came in to your life, you would want to be friends with. And frankly, there really aren't that many no bullshit, genuine and thinking honest non partisan people with life experience, who have an unfiltered way of looking at the world. For me as a 49 year old man whose abilities have been severely limited by ongoing chronic pain, there is really very, very few people who truly are 'no bullshit artists' - to coin a phrase. Another may be Roger Waters, who despite his left leaning politics which make no difference to me, has the gift of plainly speaking his mind in the most human way. I suspect like most people, politics has become so toxic that it sickens me, yet I will still listen to left or right leaning people if they have a genuine, grounded human perspective on what they talk about. I think that people like these in which I include you of course are in very short supply, and hold tremendous value for more matured and thinking demographic like myself.
I'm certainly not trying to blow smoke up your or mine arse, but there it is; a slighly different approach that you may or may not have thought of. Of course it could be considered an Egoistic thing, but if you're the kind of man I think you are much like Rick and Roger, I think you could easily put that notion far down the list in it's rightful place. Like Thom Yorks says - everything in it's right place. So there you go - I just like you, like I like my close friends for the straight talking non bullshitters in a funny way that they are. Gonzalo Lira for example if you don't know him, is a Chilean national with a Ukrainian wife who is living in Kharkiv in Ukraine and has been speaking out fearlessly against the Zelensky regime, despite being firmly under the yolk of the SBU, but spoke his mind regardless with disarming no bullshit dialogs, and his own uncensored and ostensibly subversive point of view. He was incredibly engaging and open in his views, that have now seen him dragged off into some Ukrainian dark cell, from which it's plausible he may be 'disappeared' from, or found with bullet in his skull, yet his fearlessness was intoxicating, and that kind of fearlessnes is under grave attack across the so called 'free world', with Orwellian like 'hate speech' laws underway here in Ireland, which effectively brings in a thought crime into legislation.
So people who simply speak their minds are becoming a rarer and rarer commodity. Forgive me for being so crass in that expression, but I see you as one of those ballsy people, whom I have the utmost regard - intelligence, facts, a lightheartedness and courage, yes courage to be oneself and let the chips fall as they may. The way the world is going and the authoritarian nature of all governments is increasingly making brave men and women an increasingly rare thing, and I think you belong with that honorable status, like Cornel Douglas McGregor, Scott Ritter, Thomas Sheridan (even with his whackiness), Robert Kennedy Junior, Robert Malone - the inventor of the mRNA technology forcibly and psychologically injected into billions of people who has had the balls to condemn the madness and speak his mind in the face of global murderous power structures, much like JFK did, and we know the result of that.
Yet people who speak their minds have changed the world in their own unique ways, like journalist John Pilger. Ok Ok, I know I got very extreme with my examples, but I'm just trying to point out the severe lack of 'No Bullshit' artists to which I think you belong - even if you were to talk about what to eat for lunch I'm sure it would at least make for an entertaing video, and far more importantly make me feel like there is still some sanity from men roughly my age out there whom I can relate to. If you foung this rant cumbersome, then apologies, otherwise who knows what other things you could do with this channel - you have the potential to be a part of the zeitgeist, an option perhaps you never thought of, but for which I perceive ther is a huge thirst.... Kind Regards from Dublin, Ireland.......

You said yourself you’d rather watch CZcams than tv. You all are CZcams Influencers, CZcams Personalities you literally have your own tv show that we enjoy watching and you have great ratings and you get paid for it. 2ndly you could fulfill your love for photography by demonstrating the beauty of using your classic camera collection and showing us the results. 3rd a lot of artists have some level of being an introvert and don’t like being on camera. Not sure how much money you made in the 30 days compared to commercial 8:44 photography (paying crew, dealing with clients and scheduling) , speaking of the stress level here. but it may be worth another try later in life.

I think for some of us Photography is jst in our DNA. I left my Commercial Photography career behind in 2014, closed my studio jst because I couldn’t take the stress of the amount of money I had to have coming in on a monthly basis. Luckily for me I was able to move into Professional TV and Feature film production at the highest level. Then the pandemic happened and now the writers strike and I’m relaunching my photography career after walking away from it for many years and not claiming Photography as my career. I will say Pro or Commercial Photographer doesn’t have same clout as it did even around 2005 or 2006, I would say CZcamsr today has more and if you continue this path you can make as much or more as a top tier successful CZcamsr as a Commercial Photographer. I know CZcamsrs pulling in $15/20k a month doing CZcams. I think doing both is prime and ideal. I like Dad always told me never have all your eggs in one basket.
