  • Have you ever wondered why folks on CZcams have better cameras than "real" pro photographers?
    In todays video I am going to look at why this is, especially as someone who does both, and also has a better CZcams camera than commercial photography camera.
    Hopefully the video can help you work out what camera you need for your work.

    The 5Ds is such an awesome camera. I moved from the 5Ds to an R5 couple of years back because, where I tend to shoot (commercial photography), having a tilt /flippy screen is so useful. Plus the eye AF comes in handy occasionally too.
    What was really surprising though, was how close the 5Ds output compares to the R5. Even high ISO and pushing the limits of dynamic range, the 5Ds is not far off. In a studio situation - I can understand why you stick with the 5Ds.

    The title looked like it was going to poke fun at shallow, gear obsessed You-Tubers. Instead it was an education on the economic and time management challenges of a small photo studio and how to use new technology where it provides a very practical benefit. All delivered in your usual entertaining, casual style in a thoroughly professional video. You never know what you are going to learn at the Tin House studio!

    Thanks for the clear explanation of cost benefits. I hadn't quite considered looking at my camera gear that way. I recently built a new PC so my workflow is faster, particularly for video, and have improved my turn-around time. I never thought about the benefits of shooting in the video equivalent of RAW. I muck about way too much with balancing.

I can see your videos have improved but not once have I ever thought it's better. Better quality gear doesn't really make a talking head any better IMO. Your upload consistency, frequency and the content in them I have noticed as improving though! So well done! I work in a school and taking photos is a significant part of my job. For most of my job my R3 and 1dmk4 are what I use. I shoot thousands of images with those each month. However, when I need to shoot large groups of say 80 or more people a couple times a year, or I need to do close copy work where I need to blow images up, that is where you saved me money. Based on your testimony I purchased a 5dsr last year. It allows me to affordably have a high resolution body that I may only shoot 100 images a year with for two or three final edited copies. It has saved me a fortune over buying a R5 or even renting a body. Of course, my video equipment is more sophisticated. You should know that your discussions of your business methods and equipment philosophy reach a much broader audience than what you may have first thought. Thank you from the US.

    This makes perfect sense.
    The one thing you might be faced with eventually are demands concerning sustainability certifications from clients.
    Working in procurement in a publicly owned company, I can tell you, it's the new demand we are obligated to implement in all aspects of procurement, from fuels over building materials to office supplies, software and even website designers, consultants and other human resources from external suppliers such as PR/commercial services.
    It might be a while before it reaches commercial photography, but it's coming.
    I imagine, you'll still be able to use what ever camera, you like, but your studio might require some changes for your commercial photography business to be able to obtain those sustainability certifications.
    No need to worry about it until clients start enquiring about it though.

    • @matthieurochette
      @matthieurochette Před rokem

      I mean, I don't see anything more sustainable than keeping the same camera body for a very long time. Plus, before it reaches the camera consumer (be it photographer or videographer or whatever else), it will probably reach the camera manufacturer. I don't think there is much worry to have at all on this topic, at least not for an indefinite period of time. Maybe it will be awkward for one or two years though, during the adaptation period.

Absolutely great camera but after the MKII came out with very little jump in resolution I decided to try a Sony camera. I went with the 33mp A7 IV for one simple reason. To use for the next decade and not upgrade my photo camera. I use all sorts of adapters on it (which was the worst part of upgrading, rebuying adapters) and I even have some of my Canon L lenses left that I use on the Sony camera with Sigma MC11 adapter. I kept the 6D because honestly its worth more to me then its currently worth. That camera is amazing. Photographers should buy lenses more than cameras. And Videographers should upgrade cameras more than lenses.

    @weisserth Před rokem

    Well, those are YOUR reasons. Quite obviously, CZcamsrs probably feel the need to have "better" gear, e.g. new as in latest product offering by manufacturer brand A, B, C... because most CZcams channels are gear channels and associating their content with whatever gear is the latest offering on the market, is what drives their channel engagement and hence their monetization - so from THEIR perspective, their gear choice makes a ton of sense too. Ironically, we are starting to see CZcams channels emerge where the opposite is true - a focus on purposefully old gear, as the viewer engagement mechanics for those channels is driven by an affinity for old gear (e.g. "digicams") etc.

    Love your videos, you talk a lot of sense. However in this one I think you're kidding yourself. This is an attempt at justifying kit purchases, which actually goes against your own methodology for purchasing based on monetary return. As a photographer and video maker (by which I stress that I do both, not that I'm expert at either), I can tell you that the only reason you are leaning on the BlackMagic 6k as "saving you time", is that you haven't learned how to do video properly. It would be better therefore if you just said that the reason you are using it, is because of that. No one needs to shoot raw for CZcams. They just don't. Same exposure triangle, plus frame rate. You're effectively using the camera on techie auto so that you can "fix it in post". If you were better at making video, you wouldn't need to. You'd do just as well or better (and no one would care any more or less) if you had a variable ND and shoved it on the 5DS. It's great to have lots of kit, but you definitely do not need a 6k cinema camera...for talking head CZcams videos!
    I like your videos for their straightforward "tell it how it is" truths. So i thought it only right that you get called out a little when you fall into a trap.

    I know wedding photographers using MFT. At the end of the day all modern cameras from the last 6 years or so can produce a professional image in the hands of the right person. A medium format Hasselblad in the hands of a CZcams troll will most likely give the same terrible photo they would have got from a Sony A6000 (no offence to Sony, it's just an older camera) and a pro can make the A6000 look amazing
