Punished Props Academy gotta be honest with you on this one, the shotgun shown in this doesn’t make a lot of sense. Whatever those things are on the sides, they don’t serve much purpose. If they’re balance weights, it probably doesn’t need them, it’s a heavy-barrel side by side. If they’re some kind of electromagnetic device for a railgun, well that doesn’t make much sense either, it’s still a break action shotgun. Regardless of all that, I appreciate the upload. Very good looking props.

T-shirt?
@@mikepettengill2706 A soaked T-shirt works pretty well
@@xureality HA! I meant, this should be a t-shirt. Maybe with an image of some one bashing someone with a rocket launcher or some other non-traditional male weapon. But I do see your point, a soaked t-shirt is analogous to the dreaded dish towel that wa have all been on the receiving end of.
*throws tank*
For wood grain, you might want to look into glazing techniques. This can also add a depth to the color.
That intro tho! Awesome to see my good buddies teaming up!
Ah man... no words can explain how happy I am to see both of you working together again! As always, learnt a heck of a lot, so thanks to both of you.
Thank You! We always have fun!
oh my oh my.... SKS and Punished Props joined forces in one awesome project... SUPPPPPEEEEERRRRRRBBBBBBBBBBB!!!!!!
Bill's wet on and rag off technique and Steve's dry brushing both take practice to make things look good without over doing it. Considering Bill is way more comfortable with his it totally makes sense to take a more learning roll. This was a cool colab.
Steve's technique is a lot more additive than mine, it was so interesting to learn! So glad you enjoyed the video!
Bill - I love it that you had SKS Props come onto your show, sharing techniques and processes. I learn so much from you and your team. Thank you!
You're so welcome! I'm glad to hear you learned a lot.
Thank You!
This was an awesome vid. Having you both bring different skills and techniques made it extra special
Thanks!
I haven't watched any of SKS Props content, but I gotta say, Steven really comes off smug, superior, and self righteous in this video in my opinion.
Bill and I have been friends for a very long time and we are constantly getting at each other on and off camera. I'm sorry that it felt as though I was picking on Bill or not respecting him we both have the utmost respect for each other we just like to jab back and forth when we can.
Steven is a good buddy, we have a lot of fun working together!
they are buds, he is just being a thorough teacher for those of us listening in.
Every time I watch your channel guys, my brain explodes with prop-building-knowledge-goodness! I love learning from you guys!
Awww thanks so much!
same!
For scales texture you can use a pattern ( steel mesh or similar). Plastidip only goes trough the holes and leaves a bumpy scale like texture when it cures. 👌
As a cheaper alternative you can use texture glass paint (kids draw with them on windows straight out of the bottle) and apply it with a brush. Adding acrylic colours into it can make pretty cool textures like rust and whatnot. 😉
Great video! You are rocking these videos, great sound, and production value as well as awesome content guys.
That's really wonderful to hear, thanks so much!
Brit: hey bill it's almost time to lea-
Bill: *smelling all the varnish*
Man Best channel ever! You get a laugh and you learn something ever episode.
That's so wonderful to hear!
Always fun and informative! Thanks!
You're so welcome!
Fun vid really cool techniques and I enjoyed the banter 😆
I snickered at the brush repositioning on the stock (especially since I was thinking the same thing lol!)
Flying Wookie I love giving bill a hard time 😉
Great, as always. I really like using spray shellac on my fake wood. It dries supper smooth and since it's what is more commonly used to seal wood, it really sells the effect.
I forgot to make my continuing comment on how I use real homemade rust to rust things. :)
I'd love to share my technique in detail if you guys ever do another episode dedicated to weathering.
I like adding baking soda (more or less as desired) to my paint and primer to give a grainy texture and because the soda absorbs paint it bonds well and does not flake off.
Kevin Morrison good tip!
awesome paint job Bil and Steve!
Thanks!
Thanks so much!
I can't wait for Cyberpunk 2077!!!
Kithanalane Meeeee tooooo!
Omg just of how you can make foam look so cool and life like just amazes me on how well it is done
Thank You!
You do props from some of my favorite games and you do them well I respect that and I love of how you make them look really cool and close to the actual thing it’s supposed to be in the game
Well done as usual!
Thanks very much!
Thank You!
Another way to do the wood grains or other patterns is to use hydro graphics. There obviously more expensive than painting it yourself but are an easy way to apply some intricate surface finishes.
I'm so pumped for this game
Wonderful video
Jan Haayer Thank You!
I have been doing a lot of 3D-printed textures and greebles. Great for flat/planar areas, and I can work on other stuff while my robot minions do the printing. The robots don't get tired or bored and have yet to complain about cranking out wood grain and hammered metal all day.
No joke just last night before I went to bed I was looking at some props of this weapon and there really isn't much. So to wake up to find you making one 😁
I've got a template you can download at sksprops.com
BEST INTRO EVER
Cool gun wow looks so real.
Thank You!
Does anyone else go through the cycle whenever watching these videos?
The cycle is: awesome I'm going to try this, aww man mine never looks as , why do I suck?, get real down on meself, remember that what matters is having fun, being happy with how something turned out and knowing that my next one will be even better.
Like every video, its a sickness with me.
I like your technique with the dry and wet paintbrush ;-)
Thanks!
favorite technique i found by accident and have never seen anyone else do, to get a great great coroded rusty metal, take the prop wave it under the shower to get it covered with water droplets, then hit it with a blow torch the water drops will protect the foam, and the areas around it will melt, creating a crazy bumpy gnarled texture,
Oh that's crazy!
I would have recommended adding some burning around the barrel to simulate gun fire like what ever this gun is firing explodes right out the barrel
Cool I might go back in with my airbrush and do that!
When you were painting the “wood” I wasn’t sure as I felt it was too dark, but I have to say yes, it looks like dark stained wood but what about other wood looks? Would love to see how you guys tackle making different wood colours and grains
Evelyn Rojas good idea might have to try that!
This is the last bit of encouragement I needed to start my own cyberpunk gang.
Wooo!
lol, that intro, you nerds!
Thanks!
So glad you enjoyed the intro too!
sks prop that aesthetic sound!
Yeah!
For metallic finishes, I like to use a stone textured spray paint, then paint it black and lightly brush silver paint over it - this gives a pretty neat textured metallic look, especially good for large chunks of plain metal. Makes it a lil more visually interesting!
What a great idea!
I just want to point out a painting technique that he uses at 14:13 where he uses his pinky finger to stabilize his hand.
Daltorb something I learned well when painting miniatures
An easy way ive found to do wood texture is to scratch the foam with a wire brush, then use a wash to fill the grooves
That's another great method!
I made a mistake the other day that turned out very interesting (and became a big positive). In searching for EVA foam (I wanted it in colors and I needed some long pieces) I came across "yoga mats" that said they were EVA and came in the colors I needed. Well it may chemically be EVA but it has a lot of plasticizer in it and a nylon mesh in the middle.
I was planning on it being fairly stiff but the yoga mats are super flexible. It worked out because they gave a more "organic" movement to the giant flower petals. I stiffend the center line with hot glue and TIG welding rod and they were a big hit.
This stuff would be great as a "leather" armor or reptilian skin or something. It handles a bit more like foam rubber but hot glues well and super glue worked well. Contact cement worked OK, but I think it may be a bit too flexible for the contact cement? Also rattle can spray paint takes forever to dry on the stuff. I assume the plasticizers inhibit the curing? It did get non tacky but it took three days. Luckily the whole point of buying them colored was to avoid having to paint them so there was only a small area with pain on it.
I sent you a tweet with a picture of the finished project.
What a great discovery!
I found that the best way to make a convincing wood grain is to start with a base coat of a super duper light brown, then clear coat, then use long brush strokes to do a relatively heavy dry brush of a slightly darker brown, then clear coat, repeat for between three to five coats finishing with black before the final coat.
Great tip!
Generally in theatre you go light first and then dark over. The other thing we often did, especially on "flooring" was to coat it all with "mop and glow", gives it a very durable soft sheen that looks very old polished woodlike.
Hello Bill this an awesome video. MAN
Thanks very much! So glad you enjoyed it!
@@punishedprops Your very welcome bill😎
I’ve seen people from Games Workshop use a small bit of black foam (from gun cases etc) to stipple the paint, simulating paint being chipped off.
That's a great technique!
I have so much faith in CD PR, I am upgrading my entire rig purely for that game.
It's going to be sooo good!
Any idea's for stuff from Division 2?
Hey Bill I was wondering if you could make the wingman from Apex Legends and maybe include electronics that allow it to open and close the way it does when inspected
i am so keen for cyberpunk 2077
Pappa Nut hell yeah!
What I like to do is let the paint dry a bit after spraying it on a paper plate
That's a handy way to do it!
Hey punished props... love all your builds.. would love to meet you guys one day.. just a painting suggestion. . When masking up for painting try using FBS tapes .their stuff is absolutely amazing. .. it's available at coast airbrush. David and the team will look after you ...
Man I need to learn to texture with paint! I want to try using oil paints when I finally finish my current prop.
Go for it! Can't wait to see how it goes!
I'll have to watch some more prop tutorials haha
Wow that gun looks very interesting, at first I thought it looks like the power cells were ripped out of an engine. It’s got a very motor heavy vibe to it.
Two of my favorite cosplayers in the same room working on a prop I think I died and gone to heaven 😁😁
Ha! Yeah Bill and I had a blast
Awwwww
cool
The raw umber tube says "poop" on it haha
That it does!
is it possible to decant plastic dip or flex seal spray into a pan and lay a texture onto it?
Steve did something like this in the second part of his fabrication video, so keep an eye out for that! Here's part one in the meantime: czcams.com/video/ELPTerVIM_M/video.html
Great intro!
Isn't it fun?
That was take 3 I kept laughing :)
If you use a pigment rich color like the CItadel miniature painting paints, you would have a super smooth cover of color on stuff like those wire (so no brush strokes showing). They are small containers, and pricey, but man do they last.
Yeah I usually have some vallejo paints on hand but forgot them on my workbench back home so I paid the price :)
im a simple man, i see cyberpunk 2077, i click.
More texture: White glue, and then sand (for model train building. Clean and sticks well)
Oh neat tip!
Do you allow fans to send you kits? I'm thinking about making a mold of King Orms trident from aqua-man and if I do I would like to send you one.
That would be wonderful! Would you shoot us a message using our contact form? punishedprops.com/contact-us/
have you ever used a sheet of wood patterned linoleum for wood grain in a project?
I haven't, but a good friend of mine has used those wood grain paint rollers you can find at craft stores with GREAT success!
Am I seeing things or does your tube of raw umber have "poop" written on it with a ball point pen?
Lmao it does
You guys didn't appear to seal your paint job.
I'm working on my first foam prop and was planning on finishing with a clear coat, but now I'm wondering if I need to.
???
Michael Tótin I personally don’t ever seal my Props because once you do you kill the matte / gloss the paints themselves are showing.
@@SKSProps I get that. Also why I own a broad range of clear coats.
I'm currently working on a foam crowbar and think it's too shiny. So I'm going to try a matte clear coat and hope it knocks down the shine without ruining the metallic luster. If it does, I can strip it and try something else.
Of course I'm planning on making a second/backup and might try completely different paints.
U can build up latex to make texture
Would water transfer foils work on foam? Would be helpfull with the wood.
I'm not sure! It would be worth experimenting!
@@punishedprops Also usefull for skins like carbon or stone
Is this a different density of EVA foam than normal? I feel like it looks a little more porous on the close-up shots.
Funny you should ask! Steve built a good chunk of this shotgun with his new HD Foam! Take a look at it here: www.sksprops.com/hdfoam
I never clicked *Like* so fast 💯✔
Jessica Vega Thanks!
Thanks very much!
Sorry just found the video , super 77 and garnet sand , under your paint , is great texture . Or spray your paint wet , dust with the sand , and spray over it .
Please do the peacekeeper gun .
Um, actually, rust CAN leech into wood, so having a bit of rust between the bands and stock would only serve to make it look that much more realistic. Also, a favorite texturing technique of mine is to use hot glue to simulate hasty or inexperienced welding beads; you lay it down fairly thich, and make sure you do a bit of stop/start and pull, and iy actually makes for quite the convincing weld.
That's a great technique!
Hey Bill, great vid as always. Just not sure you need a lesson on weathering and dry-brushing. it's cool though
Steve's way of weathering and dry-brushing is totally different from mine! It was really awesome to learn how he does it and see which specific brushes he uses to accomplish different effects.
Need some FBS tape in your life
do u think u could make a foam sword? CZcams dosent really help with no one making videos on them for some reason, im making sword and i have no clue how to go about doing it at all. I think it would be the best bet to ask here!
Daemion Donovan I’ve got a couple of short swords on my channel and plan on a bigger one in the future
@@SKSProps possible something like a long sword? less fantasy more realistic ish
Hey guys awesome work it would be awesome if you guys could make the DOOM BFG :)
Triple broject with Mr. Savage to buid a carry case for the gun?!
this is the Budget Arms Blunderbuss
That intro 😂
Nice! But I really think that you should have put some Militech logos on, instead of Biotechnica logos.
3:20 i wanted to do the same thing to bill painting
I think the hammer would have more metal exposure due to its usage.
Hammers are internal on a break open double barrel. What looks like a hammer on the back would actually be used to break open the action on a real shotgun.
@@chris15252 it would still have more metal exposure because of its use. And a double barrel often has 2 triggers one for each barrel. Not one. Saw it and thought I'd mention it
I would love to see Maria pistol from fallout - New Vegas
I LOVE that prop!!! How much for it?
Thanks for your interest, but Punished Props is not currently taking on any new commission clients. Thank you for your understanding! Also, this is Steve's personal prop, so its not available for purchase.

Awesome prop anyway.
Mahendra P you priced flat wires not cheap 😉 but Thanks!
Damn, NordVPN seems to be sponsoring every video I watch nowadays :D Together with Squarespace and Skillshare.
I subbed to them, they were a sponsor for Alex Steele but after 12 days I got a refund. Was not able to reliably stream at all.
you need to make ken kaneki mask from tokyo ghoul!
For more texture (usually rust on my wasteland props or armor) I mix in a little bit of (fine) sand with my acrylics ^-^ old trick my mom used to use on stairs so you would slip a bit less easily on them!
That's a great trick! People will also use cinnamon for a similar effect when painting models and small figurines!
Wait if it's a shotgun, how do you reload it with tape over the chamber Haha, you couldnt be able to break the barrels
That's a question for the game designers ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I think it uses different ammo than your average gun. We'll have to see when the game comes out@
