Elizabeth Cotten's "Freight Train"

- Elizabeth Cotten, composer of "Freight Train" and many other unheard folk tunes of the early 20th century was born in 1893. Not until the folk revival of the 1960s was she rediscovered and championed as one of the most important voices/guitarist and composers of the 20th century. Her unique 'cotten pickin'' style, as it is referred to, was born of the fact she was a left handed player. So she took a right handed guitar and played it upside down. A move that influenced guitar players folk, Americana and rock players of her time and to this day.

I too learn that song as a child.
My Daddy worked for the railroad 45 years. 😢he taught me to sing and play. When I hear a freight train now or pick up my instrument I think of him.
My Pa is still alive, but the same here. He worked 40 yrs. I'm already playing songs that remind me of him and on the railroad.

This is truly a gem. I cut my teeth on Mississippi John Hurt, Skip James, and Maybelle Carter way back in college. In those days (early '00s), it felt like I was the only one on earth my age who wanted to keep that style and those songs alive. It warms my heart to see younger folks catching on to that music (and doing it way better than I could). Solidarity.

Beautiful. Great voice! I play this song but I always think everyone else plays it so much better than I ever will. I like how this version is slower and the artist is singing Elisabet Cotton’s original lyrics. I have seen videos of Elizabeth Cotton do this song and I don’t think you can fully appreciate the song until you hear and see her do it. The young lady in this video seems to tap into that same spirit of melancholy and heartfelt longing to be moving on.
