A prototype makeup designed earlier in production was intended to take more advantage of Willem's expressions for an overall more comic-accurate Green Goblin look. But it wasn't well received, so the mask became the best alternative. It was a cool idea, I guess they simply didn't have the technology to make it work back then.
*Link to makeup test footage:* czcams.com/video/W8PVMT2AmWE/video.html
I wasn't a fan of Dane DeHaan's design either. For No Way Home, however, they definitely could have found a way and explained the change so it made sense for the story. Ex- After losing to Peter in their first battle and realizing he can't defeat Spider-Man one-on-one, let alone three Spider-Men, Norman crafts a new performance enhancer to further increase his abilities. It's riskier than prior formulas and has a stronger physical backlash.
But this greater strength, speed, durability, and sensory reaction enables him to better compete with Spider-Man physically, even when Peter stops holding back and fights at full power out of anger. The film could've treated it like his new final form, a "Goblin mode". Norman only has to raise his adrenaline enough to trigger it at will.
As a side-effect, however, accessing this greater power turns his skin lime-green. His eyes become yellow (like the appearance of extreme Jaundice). And he grows even more psychotic, throwing off all restraint or tactics in favor of all out aggression (kind of similar to Ultimate Spider-Man's Green Goblin, Minus the Hulk-like body).

They rewrote a lot, such as MJ's role and uncle ben dying on screen, but stuff like the wrestling and that criminal running away past him are very loyal to their source. • @Justmyhandle
      @Justmyhandle Před rokem +9

@@RedrumZombies True. But there are reasons for MJ's popularity that have grown beyond her beauty and/or frequency of usage in media. Many fans have come to prefer & appreciate her as Peter's beloved specifically for some factors that set her apart from Gwen (who, granted, I think was 100% Peter's ideal match).
It depends on the writer, of course. But in multiple versions, they were more easily compatible in personality, a shared passion for science that could portray them both as nerds who'd be more likely to spend time together, a mutually endearing social awkwardness, and an overall "written in the stars" kind of match-up.
She was virtually perfect as Peter's first ongoing serious girlfriend, because everything about them seemed like they were made for each other (which they technically were, literally, lol). From several fans' POV, that couldn't have worked if MJ had filled that role in Peter's life with Gwen taking her place after the fact.
The dynamic wouldn't have been the same, nor would the transition. And it wouldn't have had the same impact on Peter's relationship struggles going forward. MJ is fundamentally a very different person in multiple ways, and her characterization often intentionally portrayed her as seeming to be "out of Peter's league" at first glance.
Not that Gwen wasn't also beautiful, of course. But MJ's often been presented as the more stereotypical "hot girl", a more popular, confident, outgoing personality (at least on the surface, she's thankfully been written with more nuance in at least some versions such as her family struggles in the Raimi trilogy).
She was written to be so attractive (to the point of becoming an actress, working in fashion, etc.) that Peter himself more than once initially had a hard time believing that someone like her would be with someone like him. That's part of what gives the line "Face it, Tiger. You hit the jackpot" such iconography.
It's relatable to every nerd who dated the popular girl at school or married a conventionally attractive woman that bookworms around the world have been conditioned to believe are beyond their prospects. From one POV, MJ could be viewed as a means of Peter maturing to have more confidence in himself.
Likewise, Peter appreciates MJ for more than her looks and typically helps her believe in herself more when she stumbles. I personally think Gwen's death was necessary not only to Peter's development but to reinforce the stakes + struggle of his love for MJ. It makes their bond retroactively stronger to several fans.
Without that loss, their relationship may not have become perceived by fans (and writers) as so special. MJ could have been just the next serious girlfriend. Instead, she represents more to both Peter and audiences. She symbolizes everything he longs for, everything he's lost before, everything he strives to protect.
That fear of letting himself fall in love only to lose it again, which was a direct result of his trauma over Gwen, led him to be overprotective of MJ at times which contributed to them breaking up before (This plays into the Insomniac games' plot too). But it also became another powerful lesson for Peter in responsibility.
This makes every victory that Peter achieves with MJ that much greater to me personally, because she became this symbol of a future for Peter to embrace and persevere for while Gwen reflected a past he could think back on fondly but had to move on from. MJ herself came to accept & respect how much he loved her.
She understood that it was okay for him to keep her in his memory without viewing it as competition. Peter & MJ aren't everyone's favorite couple, but it was fans' love that made them so hyped and enduring. Sadly, I think multiple older staff at Marvel are biased in favor of Gwen largely because they grew up with her.

Fun fact about this movie “coming out after 9/11”: it’s believed the montage for when Spidey is in his actual suit was completely different for the film based on what the reveal trailer had. It showed an armed robbery going on and the criminals escaping in a helicopter, but they were thwarted by Spider-Man and their helicopter was webbed up in between the twin towers (no joke, look it up).
Needless to say, I think there’s a good reason why that intro montage was cut…

Sam Raimi really made three of the best superhero movies ever. This, Spider-Man 2, and Darkman are all amazing films.
Edit: Mind you, most of the story elements they say are cheesy are actually from the comics. It's not really bad writing so much as it is good adaptation. This includes Peter being a bit of an ass at first with his powers, the wrestling, Peter not being that great with the ladies, and Gobby being impaled by his own glider.

    • @johnman8398

“You should’ve thought of that earlier?!”
    *Laughs in the bloopers*
    “What are you talking about?”
