    I saw Paul Mariner in his first games for Plymouth. How the big teams missed him is a mystery - he had been playing for Chorley into his early 20s. Intelligent player, good in every area. Great professional.

      Good word there...'intelligent'..he had a first class football brain, knew how to pull defences wide..and allow him his strike partner or the midfield to break in support, RIP Paul...

      @@kailashpatel1706 Hi. Exactly right. At Plymouth his strike partner was Bill Rafferty and Mariner made him look like a top player. I think he scored 26 in that season. In reality Rafferty was average as Carlisle found out when they bought him off us!

      @@fatbelly27 Ha!!!!, the other player Butcher mentioned was Kevin Beattie..he was a bit before my time but...his injuries were crucial (this is also not understood well) in England not having under Greenwood a rapid and nonsense strong central defender in the late 1970s and start of the 1980s..and Phil Thompson was really brought in to partner an aging Dave Watson but he was never a Beattie..and Beattie and Butcher in the centre of England's defence at the 1982 WC would have been a hell of a partnership...

    Waddle, Hoddle, Barnes and Robson is probably the best midfield that England have ever produced. World class, all 4 of them

    That is some Talent. The Best of flair & style. To be critical Hoddle Barnes and Waddle are too alike and another dream team would probably horse this team. Gazza ,Robson & Beattie would get in a World Dream team. They were geniuses!

    David Cooper last old school winger Left foot was a wand Wasn't quick couldn't tackle wasn't typical aerial threat all Cooper had was left foot saw him dance round opponents ,not being quickest have skin them couple times one run .Passing ability was pure genius ,saw were pass ball up over or through ball inch perfect McCoist said owes huge number goals to Cooper ability pick him out ,creativity .Surprised David Cooper isn't automatically inc in anyone had privilege be team/mate Like Gazza was Davie too was born with natural gift

    Why did Gary Stevens get displaced in preference for paul parker...?Stevens was a an excellent right back

    • @Kurgan618
      @Kurgan618 Před rokem

      Because he was at fault for quite a few goals in 86 and 88 and tended to give the ball away / had worse distribution than Parker. Got to say, for Rangers he looked outstanding at times.

      @@Kurgan618 in the 1986 WC?...he played really well in the matches including Argentina but Euro 88 he was responsible for the Van Basten opener and i think this knocked his confidence for sometime over 1988-89...i liked his marauding approach, the width and his crossing ability for Everton and England was vital but i can see on reflection why Parker got nod in 1990
