worm charming (also known as worm grunting) is probably the weirdest sport ever. But I knew I had to try it. It was quite the experience!
I was legit pretty impressed that it even worked! Nature is neat.

I actually looked up a study on this, and apparently it isn't that the vibrations are similar to rain. Instead, the vibrations mimic those of moles, a major predator of worms. They know this because they tried simulating rain using a sprinkler and compared it with introducing a live mole. The sprinkler barely did anything, but the mole sent all the worms running for the surface. It works because the moles don't follow them up. They even played a recording of a mole digging, and it brought the worms up. The amplitude of the mole vibrations is also a close match to those of a worm grunter.
The study is Worm Grunting, Fiddling, and Charming-Humans Unknowingly Mimic a Predator to Harvest Bait.

The correct term is called, 'worm grunting'. It's a long established old Southern way of getting worms to come to the surface for harvesting. The worms come to the surface because of instinct. The ground vibration resembles a mole digging. The worms are trying to get away from the vibration. Moles eat worms.

I'm down the worm grunting rabbit hole again. I had to do it to obtain worms to get a composter started in my mom's garden. I made a ridged/guiro stick like you did, but I also had a chance to study one of the other setups I mentioned way back. They're just using a plain flat iron bar. So it's skidding over the wood. The action of this makes me think that it's a drilling or pecking type of sound that the worms perceive.
The thinking goes something like this: A mole is coming. If the worm stays in the ground, it's doomed. If it comes to the surface, it might emerge in a forest under leaf litter, or in some other area where it has cover. So even if a bird were teamed up with the mole, the surface is still the best bet for the worm because it both escapes the mole's groundsense and has a decent chance to land the worm under or near some cover. So, that's my current theory for why worm grunting is so effective.

Around here, we have people that do this professionally for money. They drive a wooden stake into the ground, then use a piece of flat iron to rub against the top surface of the stake. The iron looks like a big rasp or file, but I guess it has rather shallow grooves, or maybe an old file is sanded down to make the right friction. These grunt sounds resemble a continuous tone rather than the guiro-like sound of the ridged sticks.
All these devices simulate the sound of burrowing predators such as moles moving through the ground. Worms in different areas might thus have differing levels of fear response for different kinds of vibrations. Experimenting with the mode of making vibration, the rhythmic cadence, and the envelope (the tendency of the sound to be percussive, choppy, or sustained) are all potential ways to improve the results. I don't think anyone has touched the skill ceiling of this profession yet.

But why do the worms seem to crawl towards the sound? Honestly curious.

    • @steelmote
      @steelmote Před měsícem +9

I thought about that again when watching this video, and I still only have a vague guess. On the ground surface, there should be really strong transverse waves. I guess this either disorients the worms or makes them think the sound source is entirely below them.
Another speculation is that their response to worm grunting is not one of fear, but rather a response similar to that of rain: The vibrations start shaking the soil and aerating the ground, so the worms surface thinking there'll be highly oxygenated water up there, when there's not. So they might seek the vibration source as the most likely source of a well-aerated substrate for them to breathe well within. Would they ever dig back down into this disturbed/aerated ground though? I've never seen them left alone to find out what they'll do.
The idea that these sounds are simulations of predator animals moving through the ground is one I have heard a lot, and the pros swear by it, so I passed it along - but I have not seen much in the way of real science done on it. A transducer placed in the ground near known mole/vole/prairie dog/armadillo habitat could record the characteristics of their digging sounds. Then we'd have a basis for comparison, and could also play the sounds back through the transducer in worm soil to see what responses they cause. But, I'm not about to invite moles and voles to live here again in order to get that information. I already learned the hard way that putting birdseed out in your yard is pretty much a dinner bell for burrowing animals :)

Under a mulch pile or mulch layer 2-3" deep is best. 2) There is also an electric method with two conductors and a battery connected to the two pole (+ one , - other) that irritates them, and sends them to surface. I have not tried, but reported to work great. Would make a good follow-up video.

We have done this all of our lives in south Georgia. We call it grunting for worms. We did not have a fancy stick. We used an old tobacco stick and a brick. You would rub the brick back and forth across the top of the stick. I haven't done that in years. It is easier to just go buy them now. But, when I was a child, you had to get bait however you could and this was one way. As I got older, I had a vibrating sander that worked well on the stick. It saved a lot of elbow grease. Anyway, I enjoyed watching.

The reason worms do this is because moles (their natural predators) make rhythmic sounds when digging. As an instinct the worms try and get away to avoid being eaten.
A bit ironic that we are using its means of escape as a way of catching them.
Also- ironic that the dune worm emerges when hearing rhythmic sounds to hunt, and actual worms emerge to escape from predators.

if u stick something in the ground, a stick, pitchfork, shovel, finger, etc and wiggle it in the ground for a while worms come up. Kinda funny that people think they need to buy this weird stick. not saying it wont work, it will if there are worms in the ground, but if u have a shovel then just put the spade in the ground and tap the handle so u bring vibrations to the ground. usually in grass fields are plenty. What surprises me is that adults do this, i was like six years old when we used this to get worms for fishing, but we were flipping stuff laying on the ground (lots of worms under there usually) and using a shovel or pitchfork to wiggle and make them come up. even lazier way to get them is use soapy water.
