worm charming (also known as worm grunting) is probably the weirdest sport ever. But I knew I had to try it. It was quite the experience!
I was legit pretty impressed that it even worked! Nature is neat.
If you're reading this, thank you! I actually so appreciate that you've taken the time to watch this video! :) I'll send you a worm as a token of my appreciation

I actually looked up a study on this, and apparently it isn't that the vibrations are similar to rain. Instead, the vibrations mimic those of moles, a major predator of worms. They know this because they tried simulating rain using a sprinkler and compared it with introducing a live mole. The sprinkler barely did anything, but the mole sent all the worms running for the surface. It works because the moles don't follow them up. They even played a recording of a mole digging, and it brought the worms up. The amplitude of the mole vibrations is also a close match to those of a worm grunter.
The study is Worm Grunting, Fiddling, and Charming-Humans Unknowingly Mimic a Predator to Harvest Bait.
Woah super interesting! I had read too about the moles but not as in-depth info, thanks for sharing 🙌🏻
Very informative! Thank you!
if it is because they are afraid of the predator (the mole), then why do they approach the source of vibration instead of running away from it?
''Whoa'
@@mohammadumam897 They actually don't. If you repeat it enough times and track the direction the worms move, it is random relative to the stick. Read "Worm Grunting, Fiddling, and Charming-Humans Unknowingly Mimic a Predator to Harvest Bait" and look at part D of figure 3.
Wow the dune books were so influential they made worms in real life! Another Frank Herbert master stroke

LISAN AL GAIB!!
The correct term is called, 'worm grunting'. It's a long established old Southern way of getting worms to come to the surface for harvesting. The worms come to the surface because of instinct. The ground vibration resembles a mole digging. The worms are trying to get away from the vibration. Moles eat worms.
Awesome! Thanks for the info 🙌🏻

The funny thing is- worms come up in the rain because it keeps them moist and birds would use this to their advantage while hunting as they will tap their feet on the ground simulating the vibrations of the rain to lure the worms and take them back to nests!
Birds are pretty darn smart!
Yea!
I always thought worms came up to avoid drowning
maybe both
Thats wrong
this would be a perfect april fools video because no one would believe it. I learn something new everyday
Haha legit I was skeptical at first too! But amazingly it works!
I think most British people would know it's real because this is how we get worms for fishing.
i believe it works, but when i tried it nothing happened, not even 1 worm got out
I'm down the worm grunting rabbit hole again. I had to do it to obtain worms to get a composter started in my mom's garden. I made a ridged/guiro stick like you did, but I also had a chance to study one of the other setups I mentioned way back. They're just using a plain flat iron bar. So it's skidding over the wood. The action of this makes me think that it's a drilling or pecking type of sound that the worms perceive.
The thinking goes something like this: A mole is coming. If the worm stays in the ground, it's doomed. If it comes to the surface, it might emerge in a forest under leaf litter, or in some other area where it has cover. So even if a bird were teamed up with the mole, the surface is still the best bet for the worm because it both escapes the mole's groundsense and has a decent chance to land the worm under or near some cover. So, that's my current theory for why worm grunting is so effective.
So interesting! I read a bit about that theory too, pretty neat! Thanks for sharing and all the info 😄🙌🏻
Fun fact they do this because it mimics a shrew looking for worm meal. The worms adapted to avoid the vibration that comes from the shrew hunting them. The go to the surface to avoid the shrew :)
So interesting! Nature is neat 🙌🏻
But the worm was heading in the same directions as the sound
@@CoffeeCrazy The worm was going above ground, the shrew hunts below ground.
@@killtime351 I’m sorry, but I’m a literal person, lol , and when you said avoid the vibrations , I though they were not avoiding it but seemed to be heading to it. But I gotcha now.
Around here, we have people that do this professionally for money. They drive a wooden stake into the ground, then use a piece of flat iron to rub against the top surface of the stake. The iron looks like a big rasp or file, but I guess it has rather shallow grooves, or maybe an old file is sanded down to make the right friction. These grunt sounds resemble a continuous tone rather than the guiro-like sound of the ridged sticks.
All these devices simulate the sound of burrowing predators such as moles moving through the ground. Worms in different areas might thus have differing levels of fear response for different kinds of vibrations. Experimenting with the mode of making vibration, the rhythmic cadence, and the envelope (the tendency of the sound to be percussive, choppy, or sustained) are all potential ways to improve the results. I don't think anyone has touched the skill ceiling of this profession yet.
Woah so interesting!! Thanks for sharing all that info, super neat!
But why do the worms seem to crawl towards the sound? Honestly curious.
I thought about that again when watching this video, and I still only have a vague guess. On the ground surface, there should be really strong transverse waves. I guess this either disorients the worms or makes them think the sound source is entirely below them.
Another speculation is that their response to worm grunting is not one of fear, but rather a response similar to that of rain: The vibrations start shaking the soil and aerating the ground, so the worms surface thinking there'll be highly oxygenated water up there, when there's not. So they might seek the vibration source as the most likely source of a well-aerated substrate for them to breathe well within. Would they ever dig back down into this disturbed/aerated ground though? I've never seen them left alone to find out what they'll do.
The idea that these sounds are simulations of predator animals moving through the ground is one I have heard a lot, and the pros swear by it, so I passed it along - but I have not seen much in the way of real science done on it. A transducer placed in the ground near known mole/vole/prairie dog/armadillo habitat could record the characteristics of their digging sounds. Then we'd have a basis for comparison, and could also play the sounds back through the transducer in worm soil to see what responses they cause. But, I'm not about to invite moles and voles to live here again in order to get that information. I already learned the hard way that putting birdseed out in your yard is pretty much a dinner bell for burrowing animals :)
@@user-pe4bv7vm2y My guess would be that they think it's the sound of rain.
Is it me or did he just copy paste this into here 😂😂
Born in 64 and grew up doing this. All you need is a stake in the ground and use a house brick for the friction. Works like a charm.
Awesome! Cool I’ll have to give that way a try next time!

Haha glad you appreciated the reference! 🙌🏻 pretty neat how it seems like it’s based on a real life activity
I have seen birds do this by tapping their beaks on the ground to fool the worms into believing it's raining.
Dang smart birds! Don’t let them see this video or else they’ll evolve their tactics!
@@itsConnorCreates Yep, they will run a stick up and down their leg.
💀💀💀💀
@@Rand9m_guyman they got them bumpy as legs😂
I have heard several things why. They are faster above ground and are too dry on the surface above ground. I also heared surface predators are likey not flying when it rains and they don',t want to drown in the ground.
Fun fact: Tapping on the ground with your hand also works.
Interesting! I’ll have to try that method too!
Makes sense since both use vibrations

A couple points. 1) you will find far more worm density in areas with a lot of organic material in soil and on top. Under a mulch pile or mulch layer 2-3" deep is best. 2) There is also an electric method with two conductors and a battery connected to the two pole (+ one , - other) that irritates them, and sends them to surface. I have not tried, but reported to work great. Would make a good follow-up video.
Okay awesome thanks for the tip!

We have done this all of our lives in south Georgia. We call it grunting for worms. We did not have a fancy stick. We used an old tobacco stick and a brick. You would rub the brick back and forth across the top of the stick. I haven't done that in years. It is easier to just go buy them now. But, when I was a child, you had to get bait however you could and this was one way. As I got older, I had a vibrating sander that worked well on the stick. It saved a lot of elbow grease. Anyway, I enjoyed watching.
Woah that’s awesome!! Love the upgrade from the brick to the sander, that’s genius!
Thanks for watching and glad it brought back some good memories of grunting!
Have you seen the cost of worms lately? I have a very different way of getting worms to come out and alot always do but it's top secret so I can't share lol
AKA Worm grunting. There is a couple that does it for a living. It’s suppose to mimic the sound of a mole going through the ground. It’s to escape predation.
Amazing! Would be so cool to meet someone who does it for a living and learn more 🙌🏻
I actually tried this myself last year. I made my own stick; it’s pretty easy. I had the most success in shaded areas with some leaf cover. I was shocked by how well it worked!

Worms can be lucky that birds didn’t know about that summoning trick
Don’t let the birds see this video
Shoutout to the random cat that came up 7:10
She didn’t help too much with getting worms 😆
The reason worms do this is because moles (their natural predators) make rhythmic sounds when digging. As an instinct the worms try and get away to avoid being eaten.
A bit ironic that we are using its means of escape as a way of catching them.
Also- ironic that the dune worm emerges when hearing rhythmic sounds to hunt, and actual worms emerge to escape from predators.
Woah so how about record the sound of moles digging and it might work a bit better
Woah all super interesting! Ya it’s odd that they came towards me and the sound (if that’s what they’re fleeing from)
Why would the worms be attracted to the sound if they fear it? Does not make sense
@@MrAsddasdasda in the video it may appear as if the worms are coming towards the sound- cuz they are emerging from the ground. But that’s probably the best way to escape a predator that is blind and lives in the ground for a living. Ik it’s probably hard to make sense of. But I promise that this is the scientific reason they do this.
@@InvertedBeans I'm pretty sure the vibration mimics the vibrations of rain and that is why the worms come to the surface.
Worms can also be summoned with 2 metal spikes stuck into the ground and a 12V car battery, don't know why it works but it does.
If you guys dont know how this works the vibrating sound mimics the sound of moles digging to find food like the worms, so the worms get out of the ground to get out of danger
Ya that’s what I read online too but then I was confused when the worms were coming right towards me (the danger they were fleeing) 🤷🏻♂️

Awesome! Ya lemme know! Good luck
if u stick something in the ground, a stick, pitchfork, shovel, finger, etc and wiggle it in the ground for a while worms come up. Kinda funny that people think they need to buy this weird stick. not saying it wont work, it will if there are worms in the ground, but if u have a shovel then just put the spade in the ground and tap the handle so u bring vibrations to the ground. usually in grass fields are plenty. What surprises me is that adults do this, i was like six years old when we used this to get worms for fishing, but we were flipping stuff laying on the ground (lots of worms under there usually) and using a shovel or pitchfork to wiggle and make them come up. even lazier way to get them is use soapy water.
Okay sweet, thanks for the tips! 🙌🏻
That was a great video brother. Thank you for sharing this worming knowledge with us!
Thanks!! Glad you enjoyed it 😄🙌🏻
The reason. For the stick is thatnthe vibrations mimic those sent by rain drops. That's why they work!
Ya could be! I heard too that it mimics the sound of moles 🙌🏻
When I was little me and a friend collected rainworms and our trick we found out was stomping on the ground or putting a shovel in the ground and wiggling it! Don’t ask why we were collecting rain worms
Awesome! Haha glad it brought back some nostalgic memories
I know people who used a pitchfork stuck in the dirt, and wiggled back and forth. It works. I think it's because the worms think it's a mole.
Nice! I’ll have to try that method too
@@itsConnorCreates i used to do this method to by slapping on the fork so it vibrates. It works really well.
A friend of mine's father used two huge screwdrivers, stuck them about 2-3 feet apart, wet the ground and then used an electrical cord with alligator clips on one end. He attached a clips to each of the screwdrivers. Plugged it in the outlet for a few minutes, then unplugged the cord. We were picking up worms like dollar bills.
Haha that’s sweet! I would probably zap myself if I tried that ⚡️😅
Its called 'grunting' and the way Ive always seen it done is with a flat topped peg in the ground and a smooth wood or metal 'bow', stroked and rubbed back and forth on the flat top of the peg to vibrate it.
Sweet! I’ll have to try that method next time 🙌🏻
I remember this thing from my childhood. it was like 30 years ago :)) well anyway the stick in the ground can also be just knocked, but maybe it's faster like this. HOWEVER, there was another step we did back then. push a shovel in the ground nearby the place you are doing this. the shovelhead is bouncing the sound back and it has a bigger effect.
Okay awesome! Thanks for the tip! I’ll have to try that method too
Your success of summoning a worm would increase a lot if you did it underneath a pile of leaves 🍃 on the dirt. I always search a pile of leaves if i need worms for fishing, it's always works whether it's raining or not.
