My father raised worms in beds. He used something similar to your rattler as well. He told me the reason it always worked is the worms drown when it rains if they stay under the ground during the rain so the come up and after the rain they go back down. So the rattler makes the sound and vibration like rain drops. Enjoyed your video.

This would have been great when I was younger. My mom always wanted my sis and I to dig worms for her Oscars, and I do mean dig. Those Oscars ate all the time and needed lots of worms everyday. Needless to say I don't have any of those fish. You have a great day

Mighty nice piece of woodworking. We call it gruntin' for worms where I'm from and drive a stake in the ground and rub a piece of iron across it preferably an ole' leaf spring off a old car. In fact in the town of Sopchoppy, FL they have a worm gruntin festival every year.

Since nightcrawlers live deeper in the soil, is it possible that more nightcrawlers emerge with the larger wood and flatiron because the vibration goes deeper? Thanks for sharing! The invasive worms are destroying our forests so I think this method may help to remove them.

Thank you Donnie, great video! A friend of yours sent me here from another channel. I've tried cutting down small trees in several areas using the other method, and sticking a stick in the ground and tapping or beating on it like crazy, each way got nothing. Now I think I understand, make a rattler, (love the handle on top idea), and try different places. Really appreciate this!

I made a portable worm shocker from a 12v backup battery from cable box and 120v inverter from harbour freight 2 metal rods wooden handles of course put it all inside old tackle box and take it out after a good rain to get my worms, works great !

My grandmother had this kind of thing when we were kids this is how she taught us to get worms when we went fishing she also said they come up because the vibration makes them think it’s heavy rain an they come up to go to higher ground to keep from drowning..also my grandfather was a commercial fisherman..

Your old neighbor here in Bristol. When I lived in NC along the edges of the coastal plain and Piedmont, we called it worm fiddling and we did it differently, but then the soul their was very different. Good video brother!

Donnie I used buy night crawlers to fish with and what I had left over I would take to my compost pile and bury them and now there thriving there I’m going to make me one those sticks because that’s better than digging them thanks for the tip!!❤😅

It's funny it sounds like your stick telling the worms (back it up) over and over ! I have started two worm boxes out of totes! I saw your how to video of how to build one and I thought I had never saw one before! It looks like fun and I think you for the info and I don't have a small belt sander an I will try using a hand disk sander and cant wate to try it!

We call it fiddling for worms down here in southern Tennessee .cut a small tree 2 or 3" down about a foot above the ground and take ur handsaw and cut grooves into the tree on top of it.

Great! Now I can call the worms out before I start digging a hole in the ground. This way I can prevent them from getting killed in the process of digging a hole and preserve the worms.

Something quite novel and a fun video! My guess is that the "rattle" may sound like raindrops hitting soil, so the worms surface to prevent drowning.

Actually the vibrations are similar to those made by a mole hunting underground, so they emerge. Scientifically proven!
I’ve seen them but I seen ones you run the flat piece across the end of the big part.
We used to use a bow drill. Like what you make fire with to. Get worms , and we called it fiddling for worms. Some times it works some time it don't. I always was told it was the vibrating of the ground. That's done it. You can cut a little sapling. And leave the root in,the ground and vibrate it too to get worms. My dad. Would say lets go fiddling for worms. We get a bow drill and take off in,the woods. But you got to know where there at first. I Spect any think that vibrates the ground would do though,,,

I’ve done that before with a handsaw and a small bush.... cut a small bush down about 2 inch diameter and then saw across the top making a vibrating sound... and they will come to the top of the ground... we call it fiddling worms here in north Georgia.... thanks buddy...

Yea only we used a bow drill like what you use to make fire with. And set it on the ground you ain't trying to,make fire but as you pull back and forth it vibrates the ground. And because its similar to sawing on a fiddle we called it fiddling for worms,, ,,,

Did you use an old mop handle? Looked like the shorter stick had thresds.
The stick is made from a Mop handle and the Short handle is a stick for a paint roller.

Yes there is my friend. The more you do it the better you get at it.
This is called Worm Grunting. I works better if you use a 1in / 2in wood stick about 3 foot long. You cut one end with a point to drive in the ground and the other end is cut FLAT as possible, and drive the wood into the ground at least 1 foot but 2 feet works better. Then you use a FLAT piece of METAL and move it across the flat top of the wood to make a whining/grunting sound. It imitates a MOLE sound when it forages for food and causes the worms to flee to the surface in self preservation (instinct). Has been used for centuries to get worms.
Mostly forgotten because in modern times people just buy bait from tackle stores now.
Edit: (for a trick that works too) Once you get your worms do this. works best at small ponds and creeks. Drive your grunter into the ground about 4 feet from the bank you are going to fish and work it for about 1 minute. This will bring up more worms for your bait but ALSO bring up some worms out in the water where you are about to fish.
This is just like CHUMMING the water. Worms have a strong scent and having some come to the surface out in the water will attract fish to the bank where you are about to fish and you will catch LOTS more fish. Hope this info helps some of you out.

@@donnielaws7020 Thanks for the reply. Your method is awesome too, but like you stated in your video works best in organic, solfter soil. I use the stick/dowel method too at some spots but I fish others that have clay and harder soil and the 2 inch small stick about 3 foot long driven in the ground and then using a piece of metal about 2 inches wide and 1 inch thick at 1 foot long (weighs about 10 pounds!!) works better for me in harder soil and brings up worms from farther away. Sometimes 10 to 15 foot away.

I've heard that the vibrations resemble that of a mole digging down, so the worms come up, to avoid being eat.
That and Rain my friend.
It makes the sound of rain to the worms which would drown the worms if they did nothing so they wiggle up to the surface to find high ground.

I wish I had little worms like these in my yard! I don't fish or intentionally mess around with any kind of bug if I can help it, so I don't know what kind of worms they are, but these stupid things I got out here scare me to death when I'm working in the flower beds! I'm not exaggerating when I tell you they are every bit of 8-10" long! I'm constantly mistaking them for baby snakes at a glance and dang near giving myself a stroke. I live in the middle of thousands of acres of crop land, beans and corn, here in Western Kentucky. I thought I'd seen every kind of bug and worm known to man when I lived in the middle of the woods but no...I don't know if it's got something to do with the crops and all the nonsense they spray and put on the ground or what, but the array of bizarre insects I come across out here is almost enough to make me say to hell with it and just stay in the house! I'm obviously not a big person lol I can tolerate most of them EXCEPT for spiders and this ground is over-run with wolf spiders galore. Some almost as big as my hand and they ain't a bit scared of a person, they'll run right at you. Wish these giant worms would gobble those dang things up 😂
