  • The move began in February as I started to pack my collection of 3000 albums. It finished the last week of April. All my albums did arrive safe and sound...kid of. In this video i want to recap my thoughts on what worked and what did not work in moving a medium size collection.

I just moved 2 years ago Steve and I feel you. What a headache. Now You can enjoy. I finally got My 2 year old Granddaughter trained not to pull out My records from the cubes. I dont have a dedicated music room yet but I will. We will be purchasing a new home soon. I have finally retired from the U.S. Army.

Excellent tips! When I (regrettably) moved from Las Vegas to northern Idaho, I packed my albums in those U-Haul boxes as you showed. All but just a couple of the 26 boxes or so resembled the one you showed with the busted handles! But they were effective, nonetheless. Unfortunately, I cannot return south for at least another decade but when the time comes, I will probably sell all but one box worth beforehand because I’m the end of the line in my family and no one else has interest in my collection. That move should be much easier!

Thanks for the shout out! Very few people (including my wife - well especially my wife) have ever taken my advice and even fewer will admit to actually knowing me. You are right, those standard moving boxes are shit. I have a few in my basement that I will soon have to replace with much sturdier cardboard. I have almost 300 boxes in L.A. Luckily, they're in big wooden containers, so they don't have to be moved individually to get transported to Canada. The last time I moved here, I had about 2,500 records here in Toronto. That was a hassle. Now, I have over 12 thousand! And they're all in the basement. It won't be pretty. I envy that your anguish and torment is almost at an end and my has yet to begin.

Darrell. Always appreciate your sage wisdom and advice! I have been accused of having poor judgement in character though lol. I can not believe how many albums you have, when Elton John leaves this world you might be able to snag his collection for a good deal. One of my holy pilgrimages would be to visit Toronto and worship at the Vickers shrine to vinyl. I of course would bring a menu as an offering.

That was quite a story! I am glad that all of your records made it to your new place safely. It is great that you talked about the boxes that you used for the move and the difference in quality. The more expensive box that you showed seems like a good investment because the oil did not seep inside of the box. Also, the handles from what you said are strong which is so important!
If I ever move, I will definitely purchase some of those good quality boxes to make sure my records are well protected.

Hey Steve! Really good tips. When we moved 6 years ago I used the U-Haul boxes with reinforcement and I had far fewer LPs - just under 1000 - and that worked out ok. No breakage, no (very) angry movers, but again I had no steps lol. I told them to drop off on the main floor and I schlepped them down to the basement. Trust issues, I guess - and yeah, the turntable travelled in my vehicle. Anyway, room is looking good so far!

I’m all too familiar with moving heavy boxes of records around. A very large box of 45s put me in the emergency room with a fully sprained lower back. I was 36 years old when that happened. The box handles rip the corners split and they weaken every time you move them. Glad you got it done without any injuries, Steve. Congrats on the new record room.

Steve, when I saw that storage unit you bought I just groaned. That was soooooo many freaking heavy boxes. It looks like the boxes held up well being stacked that high. Did any get crushed? 45s sent you to the ER, I knew they were dangerous!

@@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 😂😂😂 what a wuss huh! In my macho defense it was a huge box of 45s. So far the boxes are holding up nicely in the stacks. It’s when we move them around that they begin to weaken. My goal is to help process them so he can separate the junk from the sell worthy. Since I’ve become a record collector I vowed to never move into a two story home. Those poor movers must have been beat.

Even with my ' modest ' collection of just over 1000 records, the idea of carrying boxes of albums down 2 flights of stairs fills me with dread...particularly when you then have to relinquish responsibility for them to a 3rd party.

You might get better prices from a packaging supply warehouse. Here in Michigan's try-county area around Detroit, we have Pantero. I've used their 13 x 13 x 13, 200 lb test, boxes for records. They are currently priced at $1.35 a box, and come with free delivery if you happen to live in the tri-county area. Filled with records, they come to about 30 to 40 pounds a box. They do have to be taped, but the smaller size and lighter weight is much easier on the back. Also, the 200 test cardboard should be strong enough to stack 5 or 6 high.

Yeah I moved last year. Thought it was my last move then I get a notice when I'm 4 months in my new abode that their gonna rip down the building and build new apartment buildings. Bad luck for me. For my records I rented plastic bins, 34 of them. They actually are cheaper than buying boxes. I rented them for a week then called back to tell them I need them another week because I hadn't unpacked all the boxes yet. No problem. The small boxes for my 45s were only $1.50 a box per week and the large boxes for my albums were $2.25 per plastic box per week. You could lock them too so movers sticky fingers were useless. The boxes were rated for 80 pounds but some I over stuffed. I used sheets, blankets and towels to stuff in with the records so none would break during the move. For everything else I used U-Haul cardboard boxes.. Had to hire movers and a truck for the first time too. Always before me and my buddies always moved me because I always helped them move but were all too old for that now.... Damn expensive when you hire movers and a truck. The Hippy day's moves were the cheapest and easiest. I didn't own much just tshirts blue genes and a toothbrush. LOL... Kat ain't showed yet or you'd of put out a bulletin I'm sure. Tough break. Randy Deadwas66 just lost one of his cats and he's inconsolable.... He has no grand kids to dwell on..... Cheers.

Hey Steve! as you know we're moving to Texas (was at end of June but now getting delayed until fall or later due to my stoke), but I really enjoy your tips. do you have link to those boxes you got on amazon? I'm gonna suck it up and pay the 10 bucks per box

M-N....U-W...::Facepalm:: Oh Professor...maybe you should plan on NOT moving again in two years LOL! Seriously, this is a GREAT primer when it comes to moving, storage, what to use, etc. You should market this as a how to video for the VC...hell, maybe you should do a TED talk on how to properly move your massive record collection! Glad things are working out and things are coming together - mine is still a shambles and all I did was redo my studio/office, LOL! Cheers!

I moved my records myself and it went okay, but prefer not to do it again. I had a inguinal hernia that I noticed when I was here. Had to get that fixed. I have long comic boxes too, they are heavy too. I imagine movers hate records.

Truthfully, he's the one that's going to be dealing with this the most. I can't lift the record boxes.😳 I will be so glad when this part is over with. Thanks for your honesty. I wish you and your husband the best on your move! Moving is hard and takes a lot of work. Moving a large record collection to the mix makes it harder but it will be worth it! I can't ever imagine getting rid of my records. They will always go wherever I go.
