  • Tonight for tea I am making a traditional beef hotpot! This is essentially just a beef stew with layered potato top :) It is absolutely delicious and perfect for this time of year! Ingredients and method below if you want to give this a go.....
    ____________________________________________________________________
    Shopping List:
Half a pound of braising/stewing steak
Half a kilo of sliced potatoes (really depends on the size of dish you're using!)
    Two diced onions
    two or three chopped carrots
    A pint of beef stock
A tablespoon of plain (all purpose) flour
    a teaspoon of Thyme
    Salt & pepper to taste
    ____________________________________________________________________
    Let's Cook!
Set your Oven to gas mark 3 (or equivalent for electric)
Get your oil hot and brown your beef
add your salt, pepper & thyme once browned
Remove your beef from the pan and set aside
Add a knob of butter to your pan, then the onion....cook until translucent and then add your carrots. Cook for another few minutes.
add your flour and mix thoroughly!
Add in your beef stock and stir in until thickened
Add your beef back to the pan and mix everything together.
Transfer your mixture to an ovenproof dish.
Layer your slices of potato on the top....add some knobs of butter.
cover with foil (or a lid if you have one!)
Cook for 50 minutes.....remove your foil or lid and cook for a further 20-25 minutes to crisp up :)
    Enjoy! x

For extra flavour add a dessert spoon of redcurrant jelly and a good few dashes of worcestershire sauce.

Big Big Thank you!... I made your Beef Hotpot today... it was gorgeous, and very easy to do! I did deviate a little out of necessity, I had an extra 45 minutes simmering in the pan to reduce and thicken the stock before transferring it to the oven dish (it just looked too thin) and I added a splash of Worcester sauce just for good measure at the same time.
Baked a couple of part baked rolls during the last couple of minutes in the oven...
it was “amazing” just so warm and tasty on a cold November evening, I have honestly never tried cooking anything like this before so to get such a great result on my first ever attempt is a credit to you
I am now subscribed to your channel and looking for my next recipe.. that home made minestrone soup looks like a great candidate for my next project!

Hi What's For Tea, love this receipe and video as I have been searching for a simple, authentic one where the video shows a deliciously browned pototoe top. So many vids show a bland not properly browned ingredients. So thank you - will definitely be holding on to this receipe until winter returns or we get a colder summer period.

I usually make beef stew with potatoes in the slow cooker I cut the potatoes small I made a pork stew the other day and the potatoes began to fall it was so tasty mum used to make a good stew with potatoes in she stewed her beef fist in pan with onions salt and pepper and when the meat was tender she put the beef in a dish and just put a bit of the meat juice in the pan and then put potatoes in it and cooked it in oven u asked her why so little juice from meat she said cos the potatoes make water and then put a crust on she made it in to hot pot it was so so tasty I've got some beef in freezer I think I'll make hot pot this week I can always freeze what's left over that's what I do with cottage pie some how it tastes nicer when its left overs and been frozen to night we are having omelette s fir tea in the omelette maker i bought the other day love fran xxx

This is real food! The stuff you can put together from a handful of simple available ingredients. Homely, tasty , nutritious well balanced family nosh. Posh nosh, in petit portions that's been over handled, processed and stacked in the centre of a huge white porcelain plate then drizzled with a teaspoon of "jus" (whatever that is!) and smeared with "pea foam" (whatever that is!) .....isn't for me! This is healthy, hearty food that, sadly ,can't be found on restaurant menus. So....it's great to know how to make unpretentious meals for yourself and for the ones you love. The accent of the presenter is as wholesome as the food she cooks. Well done!
