Oh, boy! on a cold winter's night, nothing tasted better than Mum's Scottish stew. She used Bisto as a thickener. Served with a round loaf of Sourdough bread and butter and I was in 7th Heaven!
I grew up on meals like this. My grandmother put thyme in her dumplings if her stew was plain. She cooked on a wood range and as soon as one meal was over, she'd start preparing for the next meal. We were a dairy-farming family and we ate well. Maori people, of which I come from with English/Irish ancestry too, are familiar with these types of meals and have our own little twist on these recipes using local ingredients. Nice to come across your channel. Cheers from distant NZ!
so nice to see a cooking video step by step , fully explained with no annoying music in the background , even down to showing what wine you used . most dont do this and leave viewers asking what wine etc , nice easy slow video and sooo yummy
At college I was once nearly burnt at the stake for flouring my beef cubes before browning. Colour means flavour where as the flour will burn before the meat gets sealed. We sorted this and then moved on. Delivery was brill and end result was mouthwatering. Keep it up.
Hi Cheryl oh the is nothing better than stew and dumplings my sons favorite meal .I was at pitlochry the week before the big storm and one of our trips was a trip to the v& a museum it's a lovely place thry even have a view point you can sit and look out to sea at the seals but I had no luck the weather was awfully windy I could sit and listen to you all day I love your accent .love fran xxxfrom st helens
What a delicious meal this is. Ir looks so good and truly easy to make. Thank you and God Bless you for the recipe. Looking forward to see you again....
I made this! OMG! This is the most amazing stew I’ve eaten for a long long time. I did omit the marmalade though as I’m not much for sweet food. Many thanks to you. This is out of the world tasty.
Love the look of this. You have beautiful surroundings. I love Scotland - we used to holiday in Scotland for 6 weeks every summer...loved it - it still has a special place in my heart x
Ohhhh, that looks absolutely delicious.🤗 thank you so much for sharing your Scottish recipes.. My heritage is Scottish, I’m from a little village in Ontario Canada called Halliburton Highlands..we have the Scottish summer games every summer and bag pipes..🤗 my maiden name is Cowen...❤️ from 🇨🇦
You just made me miss my mom's cooking. Just found your channel today. Thank you for the recipe and I'm most appreciative of the video clips of your area. Looks like a very beautiful place. Thank you again and Happy New Year from the island of Guam.
This looks absolutely amazing!!!! I'm from Texas and my mom makes good ole southern food and this is a lot like that. I really want to try to make this! Thank you for sharing.
Well having been born and raised in Dundee I’m definitely gonna gie this a go! I now live in the US but love all the traditional Scottish recipes. I absolutely love your channel and look forward to all the new recipes because they are so delicious!
OMG! I left a comment on your 'stovies video, about this very recipe! I wrote my girlfriend who has passed on, used to make me this on/for my birthday every year, and that it 's been a looong time since I've had it, and then this popped up! I deleted the comment on the 'stovies video! This THE recipe! Thank you!!
I love your cooking reminds me of my mother’s cooking, she was from Dundee also where I was born but only lived there until I was four. All her cooking when I was young was based on Scottish food, so to hear your accent and see the the cooking warms my heart and makes me hungry. PS maybe not so many americanisms of your lovely accent?😊
I wish I liked the taste of wine in food but I don't. Adding the marmalade is such a neat idea!. I'll have to try this without the wine 🙂. Thanks again for another wonderful recipe!. From British Columbia, Canada 🇨🇦
Looking forward to making this. The only change is the mushrooms...I don't like them so I will put little Yukon Gold potatoes and delete the mashed potatoes. I think maybe I will use peas and carrots for the sides. Thanks for sharing this recipe.Have a Blessed day.
Wow. I'm starving as dinner was ages ago. Watching you make this has made my mouth water and tummy rumble. Looks amazing. Never thought of adding marmalade to a stew. Gotta try it. Dumplings look absolutely amazing. Many thanks from Nick in Nottingham UK
I’m newly subscribed, been watching for about 10 days. I love classic homemade food, you can’t beat it. Definitely going to try this , so thank you for sharing xx
I was very young when I last had Dumplings. Begs the question about doing this in the Slow Cooker. Adding the Dumplings half - one hour from the end. I need to do this take me back to School age. Thank You.
Love the food you cook and you cook and demonstrate so well. Dundee was the birthplace of my maternal grandmother and she used to cook the the same kind of fare you cook on your channel. One of my favourites is mince and tatties. I also love square sausage and tattie scones and stovies. Anything Scottish. Good wholesome food which always went down a treat, even with my late stepfather, who was from Aberdeen. Love your channel and thanks for sharing the less well known recipes I have yet to try. Kind regards. 😋👍🙂
Oh wow Cheryl your beef stew and dumplings look so amazing and mouth watering I would really would love to just have some of your amazing beef stew with dumplings right this very second it's a pity that you don't send out your cooked meals like oakhouse foods and Wiltshire farm foods do but I do have some mince in the freezer which go well with dumplings, I've never used suet in my dumplings ever just always used Marg or butter just what I have had at the time. Love Andrea xxxx xxxx xxxx
Goodness gracious, what a delicious meal! Everything looks so wonderful and those dumplings, amazing. Reminds me of when my grandma made chicken and dumplings. Thank you again, Cheryl and I hope your foot is better! 💕
Can't beat a good home cooked strew and dumplings. The marmalade added is new one on me. But I will certainly try it great video once again. . Thanks for sharing xxlove from Renfrewshire x
This looks amazing ! I cannot wait to try this! Have you ever had chicken and dumplings ? Oh I cannot wait for all the fall meals ! Chili ..squash.. stews and dumplings🤤🤤🤤
Came for the Rumbledethumps, stayed for everything else! New subscriber. I just wish I could afford to cook every night lol. Everything looks amazing! Thanks for sharing.
Hi ! Just found your CZcams channel and loving your recipes! As an Aussie, lots of similar foods my Mum used to make. Love your style of presentation and sense of humour while your cooking. Many thanks and look forward to each new meal! 👏👏👏😘
I have made this twice and would make some comments for those thinking about making this. First, the taste is phenomenal. I have added brown sugar or balsamic vinegar to stews and it was good. I used Dundee Orange Marmelade for this and the taste was outstanding. (You can also add some very thinly sliced carrots. Good addition.) However, If you follow the recipe pretty closely, I think the oven temperature needs to be notably lower and you should probably use about 2 cups each of beef broth and red wine. At 350 degrees, too much of the liquid is reduced and there's not as much of that wonderful, gravy as there should be. I would say, use 225-250 degrees (Farenheit) for 2 and a half hours and then put in your dumplings uncovered and raise the temperature to about 400 for half an hour.
👋 Hey there, hope all is well. Always watch and try to always 👍, don't always comment tho. Anyway, this looks AMAZING and would love to ring you up and place an order for delivery LOL. Will definitely be giving this a go in the near future. Mom's Beef stew was an absolute favorite from childhood.. with the "yummy gummy" dumplings on top. Your version is different in several ways and I can't wait to give it a go. I know it will be wonderful, haven't been disappointed yet. Enjoy the rest of your weekend and 💫 💫 wishing you (and Mr. What's for Tea) an absolutely AWESOME WEEK! 💜 *LK*
Cant wait to try this Cheryl! I'm off on a work trip for several days but I'll try it when I return! Going to make sticky toffee pudding also! Had a great one of those in culross in june. 🧡🧡🏴🏴🧡🧡
Hi I’m a new subscriber I’m binge watching your channel and loving all your recipes being a Scot I’m loving all of them , thank you there’s many recipes that take me way back to my school days x
Oh! That looked so lovely! Thank you for including the alternate measures. I would have to omit the marmalade because I'm diabetic but I'm sure it would still be tasty though not really authentic. I think this would work well in the crockpot, though the dumplings would have to be cooked in the oven. Thanks for another winning recipe!
Thanks Carole :) Thanks for watching. To be honest...I don't think you'd be missing much if you omit the marmalade :) It would be just as good without it!
