  • In today’s episode of Gentry In a Jiffy (GIAJ) I finally address one of the most frequently asked questions I get in CZcams comments and via email: What are the best ways and places to sell your watch?
    As watch collectors and enthusiasts, part of the hobby involves buying, trading, and selling in order to experience exciting new pieces. I have previously discussed the best places to buy watches, but never where to sell them.
    In this video I discuss my top three ways to get the most money for your timepiece in a secure and safe manner. These tips are based on my personal watch selling experiences over the years. No matter if your watch is a ten dollar Casio F-91W, a Rolex DateJust, or haute horology of the highest caliber, this video has you covered.

    At video 10:42 "who are honorable" - Okay... Got a quote on my box & papers Rolex GMT Master II 16710 T - With its RARE and married to the watch JUBILEE bracelet (Many detailed photos were offered to them). Unfortunately "Watchbox" offered the lowest of three dealers (only $6,500). I too sell on Ebay, so I instead bit the bullet & rolled the dice auction style. Successfully sold it in a very smooth transaction on 'the Bay' - - - $10,700, the PayPal Buyer paid for shipping...

      Of course but for people who’re really bad at negotiating and lack street smarts they’re probably better off. If a watch sells for 10 they’ll give you 8. Could be less depending on the watch.
      Everyone else: private sale only either wire or cash in hand.

    • @lecorsaire2283
      @lecorsaire2283 Před 5 lety +1

      Jordi This 40% margin is for ADs. For pre-owned/grey watches the margin really depends on the watch. For example the margin on a 16610 black Sub or let’s say a two tone Datejust will be much more than a ceramic Daytona or Pepsi. When you have something valuable you can shop around for the best price and they will be willing to make less on something that they will sell fast.
      Back when I was shopping for a ceramic Daytona in 2017, a dealer offered me a black one barely used for 15.5 and told me if he could get a white one for this price he would keep it for himself. At the time white was going for 18.
      No one is going to spend $13500 on a Daytona with tax to get 14000 or less. At the time I believe the spread must have been $1500-2000 otherwise no one would be selling them any. If you wanted a new one they could get it within 5 days.

I used to trade in computer components and that market in particular is silly, people trying to send back their old, broken, component for refund.

    It sounds as though you’ve had better luck on eBay that I. In the last couple of years, I’ve bought 4 and sold 3 watches. I’ve had 2 bad experiences, one on an attempted purchase, the other on a sale. On the purchase, after I’d paid, the seller reversed the sale, and sold to someone else immediately after for a measly $18 more. eBay said they’d “investigate”, and I haven’t heard from them since. The situation with the sale was more complicated, but the guy stole my watch without paying me a penny. From that I have learned never to use eBay‘s shipping service, though while cheap, there is no opportunity to ensure the watch or to require a signature on receipt. Again, eBay said since I couldn’t prove the guy never got the watch, there was nothing they could do. I now send eBay watches I’ve sold myself, insured and with signature required.

    When I decided to get a specific Breitling reference I was torn. Do I go gray market or do I try out an authorized dealer with a real warranty? I knew I was losing money but settled on purchasing from an authorized dealer in Orlando, FL at the Millenia Mall. I am sooooo glad that I spent the extra $700. The experience alone was worth it. I was treated to a fine Scotch as I got my watch sized in perfect lighting, all while being made to feel like a welcomed guest. It may seem like a small thing. You'd have to have experienced it to understand fully. For luxury watches it's the only way to go unless you find an incredible deal. I hope that she still works there... if you ever want a Breitling in Orlando ask for Kristal at the Mall Millenia.

    eBay always airs on the side of the buyer when it comes to protection.
    If you sell a Rolex watch , never accept PayPal as a method of payment.
    When someone buys your Rolex using PayPal, all they have to do is tell PayPal the watch you sent them is a fake, and PayPal will take the money back from your bank account and return it to the buyer. They also just tell the buyer to destroy the watch , which they obviously don't do. So never accept PayPal.
    Also if accepting payment via bank transfer. Make sure the money has cleared completely before sending the watch. A well known scam is starting the bank transfer, you see that the money is in your account, so you send the watch. Then the buyer retracts payment, usually by saying it was not them that made the payment. So, again , the bank takes the money back off you and sends it back to the buyer, and they have your watch. It is a minefield selling a luxury watch privately.

      good tips - another one to be aware of is escrow fraud, where the buyer will request use of a fraudulent 'escrow service' that's been established to gull sellers into sending them watches. Never agree to use an escrow provider that doesn't have a well documented reputation.

      Dude your info is OLD - Like most ANY lawyer who reads a business contract, they ALWAYS advise NOT to sign it, you instead need to consider such advise. Ultimately common sense rules the day. - A high feedback buyer coupled to a High feedback seller (like me), this scenario you describe just doesn't happen. Now a nefarious bad actor with an eleven feedback, who just happens to be from Thailand, yes that will blow-up in your face...

      @Jack-is9sm Před 5 lety

      @@y2ktube 'Dude' , it might be old , but not everyone knows it. I am guessing you are a big eBay seller.
      Also, I know about seller reputations, as I have experienced myself how far a seller will go to stop bad feedback. The feedback system isn't a 100% guarantee that you won't receive a bad product .
      Also, stuff that is 'obvious' to some people isn't to others.

      Personally I would go and see the watch in person. Just for your own piece of mind, unless it’s from a company you can verify. Steer clear from eBay unless the seller is from a larger company you can also verify but I would say it would be worth the journey to see it with your own eyes. Only buy from a private seller on ebay if you are competent to verify authenticity or see if you can meet in a watch shop who you could ask to verify for you (for a small fee). It’s a minefield, even an experienced collector would get caught out with some fakes, weights are the same, etching on bezels... even sometimes carrying genuine case components but fake internal movements... and not to mention they could be stolen. Best of luck

Like don't let the person out off your sight of they have the watch unless they have already paid you for it. This is the best way to sell watches from about fifty to a thousand dollars. Anything over a grand and yeah go ahead and call watch box or a similar company. But if it's under a grand that's there best way to get the most money for your watches under a grand.

    Hi TGV. Enjoyed the latest ‘Jiffy’ video. I’ve contemplated selling a couple of my watches from time to time to build funds for a new one, such as the Fortis B-42 Cosmonaut (bit of a grail for me), but honestly, the process and potential hassles have thus far, put me off. Thanks for the practical advice. Always good to hear from a seasoned seller such as yourself. I have a history of looking after my watches exceptionally well and babying them, so they’re in excellent condition. I’ll have to mull selling them over yet again. O & G👍🏻

    I have bought my first watch that I truly love. I have/had a few more to the expensive side watches before but this is what took my heart. Your videos gave me the 'last push' to go out and buy it. It is a Tissot Seastar T120.407.22.051.00 and I'm a 100% happy with it, yes I could have bought a better watch for more money but that would have been out of my budget.
    Anyways I thank you for your videos and I would love to learn more about watches and horology in general.

I just make better buying decisions, and quit playing the "I want to try it at least" game. It's a watch, there's no "trying it out". Look at pictures of it, and you either love it or you don't. Do you have any recommendations for watch communities, specifically for those who are stuck dealing with the super affordable watches ($200 or less)? I don't use Facebook anymore so that's out of the question, I mainly stick to Reddit these days but r/watches isn't somewhere I can share, I simply don't fit in with that demographic (I don't have that kind of money to burn and don't feel like being down voted because of that). The only budget groups I've found are basically dead.

    • @laurensterpstra7137
      @laurensterpstra7137 Před 5 lety +1

      You can share your budget pieces on r/watches! I only have Timex, Seiko's and Casio's and I always get a lot of positive reactions on there! Ofcourse the sub is still dominated by Speedmasters, Rolexes, Pateks, etc. but there are people on there who will appreciate budget pieces!!

    • @Brunnen_Gee
      @Brunnen_Gee Před 5 lety

      @@laurensterpstra7137 Thanks for that. I've been sort of shadowing that sub for a few weeks now, but like you said, it's dominated by high-end brands and I didn't really feel like I fit in there at all. I said $200 earlier, but in all honesty, I don't see myself ever spending more than $100 on a watch, and even that'll be a big stretch for me. I recently got a Tevise Submariner homage, and while I love the thing, I feel like I'd be committing social media suicide if I posted it there.

    I have a large bell outside my house to ring each time I see a really good watch advert. The how-to is simple... describe it succinctly but properly (not even manufacturers do this but you should), show several photos leaving nothing out and don't repeat a single photo. If it's got great lume, make that photo 2 or even 1 - everyone knows what a Rolex sub looks like so hook people's emotions with an awesome lume shot as the main photo or put two images on the first photo (bearing in mind how it looks on the thumbnail on a small screen).
    Btw, I've yet to ring that bell
