I REALLY MESSED UP! - 5 Watches I Should Have Never Sold + Unboxing My First Genta Watch

  • Today’s video is a follow up to my “Top 5 Watches I Regret Buying” video (link below). However, in this episode I step out of the buyer’s shoes and into the seller’s.
Join me as I share the 5 watches I regret selling and why I should have never given them up. In discussing the motivations behind these decisions, I highlight some valuable lessons learned that I’m sure every watch collector can relate to at some point.
In addition, I unbox my latest acquisition - an unintentional purchase from a brand I have recently become obsessed with - and I share why I believe Universal Geneve is currently a sweet spot in the vintage watch market.
The watch in question is none other than the massively iconic Polerouter designed by the legendary Gerald Genta. This was his very first design and he was only an astonishing 23 years old at the time.
Which watches do you regret selling? Please share in the comments below.

Dear The Urban Gentry. Firstly, thank you for posting these great videos. I watch your videos every time you post a new one. I have a request: could you please make a video of watch magazines if there is any? I would love to educate myself more by reading. In addition to your channel, I feel that a proper watch magazine would be a great supplementary source for horological information. Many thanks and keep up the good work! Greeting from Finland.

I have been collecting for a minute. Today I am wearing my 52 year old Baylor/Heuer bi-pax 1969 chronograph. I was 15 when I bought this, my 1st watch. I wanted to become a pilot and 25 years later that happened. I wore this little watch on many a cross country. It is SO delicate but I am very careful with it. Had to change the 4:00 pusher and connecting rod in the movement during it’s one and only service 3 years ago but everything except the lume (old radioactive ☢️) and the water seal function beautifully. Old watches rock. I have several in my little collection. Great vid as usual Sir!

I recently wore my 18 karat gold Universal Geneve Polerouter Date with champagne dial to the Swatch store here in Miami.
The representative immediately came up to me and asked, "Universal Geneve?"
For someone to know what watch this is, they are deep deep deep into high horology. I was so impressed with him that I bought a watch, sistem 51 just for fun.
It's literally the perfect watch. It's around 10mm overall in thickness but wears like 7mm thin, as the crystal is thick.
It wears like a 35 mm, but it looks like a 37 or 38 mm because it's so vibrant, and it's so bold.
The target style dial inverses the light play like no other.
You can take a hundred different pictures and none of them look the same because of the way the dials designed with light play in mind.
    It's literally the perfect watch.
Mine, from 1960, still has one of the smoothest movements.
I have a Vacheron Constantin, 2022 Rolex Datejust mother of pearl/ diamond dial, Zenith, and a few others but the Universal Geneve Polerouter is art.
You must buy one before they double in price.
Bruce Lee's Universal Geneve Polerouter was sold for $20,000 in 2017

For me its about the possession of the item, I never sold any of my watches, now more than 170. What I do is I keep them at home, in those 20 watch cases. So every sunday night I change case and I only wear the watches of that particular box in that week. No matter if I wear everyone of them (changing every 8 hours) or only a few of them in that week, for me part of the fun is knowing that I have them and that I can take a look at them whenever I want.

When purchasing jewelry a more economical than solid gold but still beautiful option is a gold filled piece. Jewelers create gold filled jewelry by pressure bonding an actual layer of gold to another metal. Although a gold filled piece of jewelry is not sold gold, it has the same desirable properties and look of solid gold.
It won’t tarnish and will not rub off or turn colors. Wearers who are sensitive to certain metals can wear gold filled without worries of an allergic reaction. Although the layer of gold in gold filled pieces varies depending on the manufacturer it is in all cases significantly thicker than regular gold plating (the next category of gold jewelry). Gold filled accessories can be worn even daily without fear of fading or rubbing off for many cases as long as 30 years.

I'm very jealous! I love the Polerouter. Such a classy and subtle piece. My grandfather owned the solid gold variant, he always wore it when we were out for dinner, sadly after he passed, nobody has seen the watch since. I believe it to be hidden in a safe somewhere in the manor since a couple of other watches of him are missing as well, so I'm always looking for them when I'm there. Great video Tristano!

I understand the cheeky bids leading to accidental purchases. I have a Cyma dirty dozen in the post right now which I bid on after a few sips of whisky. It was relumed which means I can wear it without the worry of radiation poisoning but it has new hands so that also brought the price down.
    Love the polerouter!!

The speedmaster part really resonated because i am torn between keeping and selling. I bought my Pro new in 2009, my first mechanical. I wore it every day for the first 2 or 3 years but started to wear it less and less. I bought a Tudor Oyster a couple of months ago and that has been attached to my wrist. That 34mm has made me really crave an old Rolex, Air-King, Perpetual date, Oysterdate, and i know i could sell the speedmaster and get one. But i look at speedy and it pulls at the heart strings. I love it, but i dont know if it is really me anymore, at the minute i wouldnt buy another chronograph. I guess i am affraid of selling and regreting it!

P TH even worse, I gave one away as a present. The recipient, a close family member, was delighted but they keep it in a box. It's still unworn by them. A L & S doesn't mean the same to them and they just think of it as a very beautiful watch. I've not got around to replacing it and given the current prices of Lange One I'd struggle to justify it as reasonable purchase given other priorities.

I inherited a Polerouter with the Microtor from my step-grandfather. It's got a tiny bit of rust on the back of the case, so it doesn't look as stunning as yours, but the front looks really good, apart from scratches on the crystal. It's a black dial with the gold circle around it. Judging from what you said about this line of watches, I think I am going to hang on to this for a while.

Elias Westeren yes I have lusted after another Explorer, but the price is now in the realms of decadence. My Explorer in 1965 was purchased in Singapore, which then had no tax on watches, brand new for less than £50. It was purchased as a watch that could stand up to the high humidity and wet dampness of a Malayan jungle environment, but now, in my humble opinion, are mere fashion baubles.

I feel your pain on the Digital loss, when something looks and fits just right its priceless. Mine wasn’t a regret of me selling but it was literally lost. I wore it to a party and met a soon-to be girlfriend who said she liked my watch and how I wore it that night. I noticed it was gone at one point after our relationship had ended and assumed I had lost it for many years. It hasn’t been until many years later and my renewed interest and love for Watches I realized maybe she loved that watch more than me but no regrets if thats the case, you get some you lose a watch but you have memories of both 😁 I guess that’s the moral of the story, think of the memories you had with the watch and what special moments happened when you had it that’s what will stay with you.

Just watched a Aussie you tube watch guy making veiled rant against some one that sounded a lot like your evil twin. He characterized you as a Terry Thomas like bounder / cad . What was it that Winston quipped about making enemies ? I got a good chuckle. I tried to sell my soul to the devil some time ago. I was very disappointed to be turned down by Big Red on the grounds that I hade voided my souls warranty and that it was fully depreciated. Love you channel, you scoundrel ! “ Love means never having to say your sorry” RMN

haven't had this problem, but I've been fortunate enough to have been a collector of other things before watches, so I've been super careful about what I bought. I sold my first watch about a month ago, doubled what I payed for it new and got to enjoy it for over a year, nearly two years. Don't regret it one bit, it was time for it to go, and the money came in handy. Actually my collection still feels large for me and I'll probably be scaling it back 1-3 more watches. Always buy something unique and in demand, don't ever sell because you need money fast. That auction sat up for probably 2-3 months, but I got what I wanted out of it. Just my opinion. Anyways great video bro!

I've only been collecting watches for around half a year and on a student budget so I've only ever sold one watch, it was this wonderfully simple 34" vintage Bernex with an inscription on the case back thanking an employee for working with the company for 25 years. I sold it to a member of the UGWC because I just never wore it as I'd only wear a manual wind for dress purposes and what opportunity does a first year student get to dress up? Sometimes I miss it, but I don't regret it because I know it's new owner appreciates it far more than I ever could. Great video!

I specially regret selling my vintage Omega Speedmaster Moon watch, but I was passing through some very rough times at that moment and I had to let it go. I was thinking in getting one in a few months but I think I’ll go for a Tudor Black Bay instead.

It's tricky to strike a balance between keeping a collection size reasonable and making sure to not get rid of anything that will cause regrets in the future. Less can be more, but not at the expense of sentimental value.

    Dear TGV,
I absolutely loved the images you added before each item. It kind of reminded me of one video you made (I don`t remember witch) in witch you would have this hilarious reactions before presenting each item (Maybe something about watch buying mistakes or don`ts...).
That 80`s Tudor Day Date was absolutely gorgeous! Maybe you should consider buying it back as a gift to yourself . In my opinion there are some watches that people should posses (even if not to wear them) for the sentimental value. In your case, this Tudor Prince, as it is your birthday year and being a 35mm beauty! I have a 1950`s Eterna Matic my grandfather gave me and it is absurdly costly to upkeep, and I hardly wear it for fear of damaging, but I keep it anyway.
    Loved the video.

I sweat profusely every time I see you swipe the Leek through the bubble wrap. Might I suggest sir, a Leatherman Raptor for a future unboxing? It’s a tool worthy of a job needing to minimize the risk of nicking, poking, and cutting people and fine Swiss watches. It’s also a fine tribute to our first responders.

No regrets selling as I’m not yet a collector, however I recently lost my Sunto Observer that I’d had for over 10years and was my main watch. The observer is an ABC “outdoors” digital watch that rivals GShocks and the new Seiko Digital Tunas.
The happy part of this story is at the time I lost it there happened to be a video on Andrew st Pierre whites 4x4 overlandin channel about his Rolex, which I watched. Then that made a recommendation for You and then Bark and Jack, now my Amazon wish list is full of Seikos, Orients and Retro Casio’s and more besides. Thanks for some great inspiration and entertainment.

That new watch is lovely, but the one you returned had such unique character. May just make your list too :-) I think there's no point in regretting selling something that's easily available. If the price has gone up, who cares. It's only money. You can still get it if you want. That Schumi Speedmaster is one you may not find ever again. But one can't just buy expensive watches and keep everything, unless one is stinking rich. If you want something else more, then you do. No point in reasoning, when there is no reason :-)

That Universal Geneve is beautiful TGV. Funny I was just sitting with my dad talking about watches. Yeah he is the reason I'm into watches. Anyway we were talking about his 77 Rolex master GMT. He said that when him and my mom first moved from Olympia Wa to Seattle Wa he considered selling it, because they were short on money. My mom talked him out of it, because she knew that if he did he, would regret it for the rest of his life. That Rolex has been with my dad though thick and thin. I love that watch because it reeks of adventure. He is a retired Marine Biologist and has traveled extensively. How he got the watch is a great story too. Me personally I have no regrets every watch I sell, I sell because I dont love it anymore.

About the "safe queen" question. I agree 100%, if the watch never gets worn, whats the point? Now, I admit that I am a brand new collector, therefore I may have a different view on this, once i have a couple of higher end pieces in my hand. The way I see it is, "never spend more on a watch, or other luxury product than you are comfortable with outright losing". Reason being that, if you are comfortable with losing the $, you will never worry about dings and scratching the watch, therefore you will enjoy it so much more because the money is gone period. If you do want to sell it later on, all the better. But if you depend on possible resale value when buying the watch, you will always baby it. But like i said, iam new in the game. Tell me what you guys think.

One comment for you TGV, if you can do more videos about those mid range watches, which cost about $1000 to $2000 in the gray market, such as Frederique Constant in-house movement collections (like FC-700, 703, 705, 710, 715,), Oris, Raymond Weil, Baume & Mercier, and the Chronoswiss Grand Pacific, and so on, it would be great.
I like your videos a lot, but I realized that your videos are mainly focus on those which are under $500 range (like Seiko), or those which are over $3000. I like watches, I’ve collected them and watched your channel for a while, so for my case, I would love to save my money to buy a better watch to reward myself in a period of time instead buying a Seiko (not saying they are bad watches, but if I save my money for a long time I would like to buy a good Swiss watch). On the other hand, brands like Rolex, Omega, and even some Tudor are too expensive for me right now! If I have the money for a Rolex, I would just buy a new car.
So if you can do more Videos for those mid range watches, it would be so perfect! This is just my thoughts, and you are doing a very good job and making very good and useful videos all the time! Love you TGV. 👍

I sold my Omega speedmaster for $500 last year after I lost my job. It needed a chrono button and about $500 worth of cleaning and part replacement. I kick myself daily. It was a $4000 dollar but the rent was due! I have a job now but the best I could do was a Shinola!

Im very excited to see your review of the Gavox watches ! I tried a few of them on at the Worn and Wound watch expo in San Francisco last May. And they were impressive! Meeting the owner and creator who is a pilot was awesome. He really took his experience as a pilot into account in the designing of the watches. The aviation watch is probably my favorite. With the Hamilton pilot (interstellar) being my current everyday watch.
