I've just gotten back to Zurich this morning from NYC. I told my son about how I finally got the battery replaced in my Macbook Air and then also the sound restored (after 10 years of only working with USB or bluetooth speakers). He asked me what they had done. I said: Duh, dunno. replaced something? He said, Damn, I would have told you where to go! (I've only been complaining about this for 10 years). He pointed me here, although he never goes to NY. Ha! This is exactly where I went a few days ago! They were brilliant! (But I don't remember seeing a tip jar).

Component level repair is not only an option, it's a must.
Every board should be checked, even those that are thrown away should be checked, more often than not things can be fixed rather simply and cheaply, cheaper than throwing it away and getting a new one, and if you can afford it, fine, but it should be fixed and should as refurbished, or shipped off to poorer countries, etc.
Not using the max potential (up to a point) is just a waste of money and resources.

I have watched many of your videos and you clearly know what you are doing! You cuss a lot yet it’s humorous at times and fairly appropriate. My question is, not related to your video actually, when dealing with so many motherboards or boards in general on the opposite side of a Silicon chip, sometimes covering is a black bump which looks like Goo, I tried searching for it to no vail. It looks like solder by texture yet is almost as dark as many chips. What is it’s purpose, how to take it off properly, how to put it back on? Where would I get a wireless mouse schematics if I wanted to repair a mouse that is malfunctioning. I do know how to solder fairly decently.

It looks like most of the macbooks specifically are mostly gutted online but there are a few in non working condition. I want to learn to micro solder on junk, but I would hope that there is at least a prayer of fixing it. wish there was a practice computer supplier, scares me practicing on friends computers. Is a regular mother any more difficult as I have one with a dead ram slot but I know its a component located very close to the cpu socket and if memory serve me its a capacitor. going to start on that but would like to have enough junk laying around to actually get a feel for it. I'm usually extremely good at thinking through problem and and diagnostics. Want to add this to the toolset, even if its a $2000 hobby. Wouldn't be the first and occasionally I break even.

Hi Ross , I have a 2012 A1312 27" iMac I have no sound ! in pref pane, audio shows no devices! no Microphone , and no optical output .if i switch to bluetooth audio it works, a BT Speaker, and BT shows in devices , it will also work , if i plug in a USB port replicator , I then have sound out and a Mic input from the replicator .I have reinstalled the OSX and used a live CD still no sound, also had Apple go through it with me on the phone , they said take it to Stormfront and booked an appointment ,which was a waste of time, the young lad was helpful, but was not equipped, with any similar issues , despite it all over the internet and youtube, as a retired TV video engineer , my view was that if it were hardware ,why did all the devices disappear , if an audio amplifier were to fail , you would expect the inputs and other outputs to be there, unless there was a common supply rail that effected all, of the devices that have failed.
Great videos, keep it up , only wish Apple could be more helpful!

I know what caused it. Some moron plug my computer to a mixer with phantom power on. +48v
Now I have the build in speaker and mic but when i connect the speaker jack i only have the right channel with cracks, the second dont even have sound. Maybe a bad chipset?
    Thanks for your kind work

Okay, so what do you do if you replace the wrong component the first time. Do you just leave it; or do you put the original back. Assuming the component has a reasonably high value to justify the extra work? Just wondering...

    LDO = 'low dropout' (voltage).
A regulator IC that has a low voltage threshold before it stops conducting/regulating.

I managed to wipe the chip holding the POST Chord and Beeps
    On my Late 2008 A1278 13.3 2.4 Deluxe
Yet it works fine, the sleep light blinks on startup
I tried removing the same chip from a parts donor A1278 2.0 13.3 I've had for several years
but destroyed it., while desoldering it with my tiny old 15 watt Weller..... the GLUE holding the damned thing..
I've tried to find the chip from parts houses and on eBay
Now I've forgotten the chips ID number...
    The Uni works perfectly
    Just no POST sound..
Or beeps if I put in a known bad RAM DIIM I've kept to test such things..
I have a DEAD $5 Late 2008 A1286 15 I found on eBay that might have the same chip..
Trying to find a YT video on replacing the device...
    aloneI once worked from...
    Retired camera repairman, here
I do this sort of thing for my pleasure
    Since age 5...
    Macs since 1997
    Mechanic!
Perhaps I should leave well enough alone??
    But it bugs me....
I got the INT Uni for $41 ppd from a young physicist
    at Lawrence Livermore Labs, CA...
    Edwin Tellers H-Bomb outfit....
    No HDD, of course
    National Security
Wish I had stood in bed, the day I wiped it
    doing something else
