    After many years of using an abusing my tools by throwing them in dresser drawers, I decided enough was enough. I built this 6ftx2ft storage unit to house all my tools and then some. The name of the game was space utilization. My goal here was to create drawers that would not be come catch alls. This is why I made so many shallow drawers. There is less chance of me stacking tools on top of each other now. In the future I will post a part 2 to this project in which I make dividers for all my tools within the drawers to keep them in their place.
    The unit is made with 3/4 Birch ply and 1/2 oak ply for the drawer bottoms. Plans have been altered with 1/2" ply for drawers sides to save money and keep the weight down. Drawer slides used are 20"
    Paint color on this is Pittsburgh Paints Nautica Line - Majolica Blue
    The top was trimmed with solid birch and finished with 4 coats of polyurethane.

    Upon unboxing, I was immediately upset at how the rails were very noticeably bent. But I kept going, all tools needed to assemble were included czcams.com/users/postUgkxqtX4Dxs6aecAZEuz6GY5-d81YecKCshn and I had it set up in about 30 minutes. Honestly I love this thing, make sure to read the measurements and measure your space so you know if it'll work for you. I bought this to put inside my closet, underneath where I hang my clothes and it is absolutely perfect! It is VERY sturdy and all drawers glide easily and mine are stuffed, and they are still flush when closed.

    LOL. Lucky You. I have been using my parents dresser drawers that were purchased in 1950. We have had a lot of rain lately, and I put some chocks under it to stop it getting wet. The mice really appreciated a dry place to sh*t. Not under it but thru ALL the drawers.

    Thanks for the video. Advice requested. I used to build custom furniture professionally in the 80's for a few years. When I stumbled upon your video I remembered that I still need to build a large "Map" style storage cabinet for my radio control airplane workshop. The interior of the drawers need to be about 60" wide and 36" deep but only 3" and 5" in height. They will hold larger scraps for fiberglass, kevlar and carbon fiber cloth, sheets of mylar, plastic vacuum bagging material and paper plans for radio controlled aircraft. Picking your brain, I have no have no Idea how to successfully build such large but shallow drawers and keep them from sagging over time. Thanks...

    looks great. Looking for your plans when you release them :) After building all our stores cabinetry with 3/4" pre-finished white birch, I had to run everything one and done as there was no cover up finish work. For that bottom upper toe kick, I'd run front to back bottom shelving and that toe kick plate would sit all the way to the top of the 3.5" cut out, supporting the shelf. I like your method as it saves material and you have drawers anyways. Thought I'd give you an alternate if you ever want to leave that open and have a bottom shelf.

    I bought used blueprint cabinets that hold items 2 inches... usually on their side. They are full depth drawers on ball bearing rollers.. and 48x48 inches. You can get these SUPER quality files for cheap or free on Craigslist, etc. You can stand in the drawers without buckling. You can stack units on other units without loss of strength or function. For larger storage I bought steel storage cabiners with many different sizes and shapes. You can buy super quality used ones for $50 each from junkers. Buy some Harbor Freight wheels to put under them and you have cabinets that are as good as Snap On for PENNIES on the dollar. I have 25 blueprint drawers and 100 steel drawer cabinets on 100 or so wheels. I didnt spend $2000 for EVERYTHING.

    If anyone re-builds this i recommend installing the drawer slides while the wood pieces are still unassembled. There is a reason why IKEA does this. It´s much easier if everything is measured correctly. But given that he got them after building the cabinet his order of operations was justified.

    Good project.
    FWIW as a professional- you can probably get away with 1/2” baltic ply drawer sides and 1/4” bottoms. You alluded to that at 9:00
    With glue and stepped square joinery, I have a mechanic’s bottom chest on wheels the size of yours. I built it almost 25 years ago and even with a couple drawers full of ~100# + of steel jigs, hammer forms, and dollies I have never had a single failure other than a drawer pull I dropped a big maple plank on.
    One thing about it: yours will last at least that well! :)
    I prefer the narrower drawers as you mentioned; the idea of a toolbox is to access tools in an organized fashion, not stuff it full of stacked up stuff.
    Nice color choice btw
    Mine’s a tad more blue tone but yours looks familiar.

    • @KevBotWorkshop
      @KevBotWorkshop  Před rokem

      Thanks! And i fully agree about thinner ply. In my plans I made an adjustment for everyone to save some $ and make it weigh less. I still would probably not use 1/4 on the bigger drawers just my opinion cause I throw in there a router and sander and drill so the big drawers are a bit heavy, but yeah I see what you mean

    What was your total cost for the plywood? Is 3/4 still about $100/sheet?

    Hey Kev, I really dig this design and look forward to trying my hand at following your design once I move into a bigger space soon. I tried my best to replicate what you did in sketch up and made a cut list. I made a few adjustments just guessing at some of the dimensions and I wasn't able to get my cut list down to what you used but it's pretty close. I could post that up for you to give to other viewers who also want to try this out if you're interested. Didn't want to hop on your channel and just put your designs out there without permission :p

    Kevin - Check the jig you made for the screw holes for your handles - the handles are crooked.

    Man, 4 sheets of baltic birch plywood costs like $1500usd here in Norway now. almost cheaper to use solid wood!

    Question- why did you use pocket hole screws for the drawers, when they have false fronts so conventional screws would not be seen? Instead the sides have those big holes showing. Is there some advantage? Cannot be strength, the 1/2" bottoms will add all that is needed.

      Pocket holes give more strength while screwing straight into plywood endgrain isnt as stong and can cause the layers to split

    I love it!!! And actually Majolica Blue is the accent color I have in my home. How much did you spend building it?

      Tough to say as I bought during covid prices and didnt keep receipts. Price wouldnt be so bad if there wasnt a lumber AND hardware cost

    I love this so much. How well does it work as a work bench as well?

    • @KevBotWorkshop
      @KevBotWorkshop  Před 3 lety +1

      I didnt really make it to be a work bench, so I just kinda use it to place things, but as Im writing up the plans right now Ill making a note that if you wanted more of a workbench to make it a little bit bigger so you can clamp down etc.
