I remember Bruce Robinson as Brian Lovell in Still Crazy and he was brilliant. I didn't realise he had written Withnail and I. Superb talent, acting and writing.
this is one of the best interviews I have ever seen, and also one of the best talk show formats, no plugging just conversation, in this case very funny conversation. brilliant
Yes, another one here saying thanks for posting. Have just read "The Peculiar Memories of...", so an interesting insight. If you're a fan of BR and haven't read it, go and get a copy!
Bruce also wrote a fantastic book on the Ripper. 'They all Love Jack'. Read it... Wish he'd write one on the Madeleine McCann case - similar themes involving a massive cover up.
I kind of wish this was just an interview with Bruce. I'm not sure if Radio Caroline founder Ian Ross or theatre director Joanna Bowen really add anything to it.
Sorry it's been a year since I've watched this-and even longer since I saw it go out-so I couldn't remember the exact timeline in relation to Penman (which is indeed a great book) or indeed that he was 'plugging' it here. I do believe and stand by the notion RW broke the on/off record rule though. Let's remember this wasn't just a chat show, its MO was several hours chatting and dining as if socially, with some parts being filmed and others not. That she actually lied when he asked was wrong.
I'd have to check Smoking In Bed but I do seem to recall his issue was in feeling he'd revealed things that he thought was off record. Certainly the 'sponge or stone'/Uncle Monty inspiration tale relating to filming R+J, now well known, was not at the time and I think he's on record as saying he'd have kept it secret, but was tricked.
Come on, this was just Ruby Wax's schtick back then, being rude and brash to guests. Bruce was probably aware of what she was like and he doesn't let it faze him, he stays calm the whole time. And that "we're not running are we?" has to be a joke, there's no way he could be that gullible (what else they would be sitting on that stage for?)
Bruce is great but Ruby Wax is cruel and nasty. The Peculiar Memoirs of Thomas Pelham is well worth reading for sure. Withnail and I probably one of the best comedies ever written. He also wrote the screenplay for The Killing Fields and made a guest appearance in 'Still Crazy' as Brian. One of the most realistic movies of a band on the road and the music wasn't bad at all.
i would not be caught dead in bed with bruce robinson. he used to be handsome, especially in that french lingo movie. god he was!! so why did he let himself go?
My father hated Ruby Wax, I understand why now. Utter trash 'interviewing' a genius, Ruby, the door is over there feel free to use it, Bruce, carry on...
Yes but there's a difference in giving up the information to the wider public isn't there? It's far nicer to do it of your own violation as opposed to being conned into it. Bruce hadn't wrote Penman at this stage, I don't think, so this may have been the first time he'd spoke of it - and unwittingly too. It's well known he wasn't happy about being lied too, and refused any contact with Ruby afterwards
Bruce Robinson. The man behind the greatest comedy film ever made. Absolutely adore this guy
Bruce is a freaking icon .....always running against the grain

Thanks for uploading this. He's a great writer and a great interview.
Bruce is an island... He bows to no man. I would love to share a pot of tea with him.
His intensity is a bright light. 🌞 🇬🇧
I hadn't seen this until now - thanks for posting

Bruce Robinson = handsome, sexy, funny & intelligent
Bruce also wrote a fantastic book on the Ripper. 'They all Love Jack'. Read it... Wish he'd write one on the Madeleine McCann case - similar themes involving a massive cover up.
This show should go down in the annals
Oi. Is Bruce tucking into a beer ? Thought it was solely red wine. Or was that a becks blue.
I kind of wish this was just an interview with Bruce. I'm not sure if Radio Caroline founder Ian Ross or theatre director Joanna Bowen really add anything to it.
I think it's edited down to cut out most of their parts

No need to apologise.

I wish Id had a play of the week moment
Most of the comments here are 12 years old. Now I feel old . Is Ross brucinson still going?
Fuck knows... Shall we go grab a beer?
Bruce did'nt know he was on air hence...'were not running are we?' etc best of the century chin chin..
Ian Ross
Horrifyingly insensitive to Mr. Robinson. So awfully rude and sickening.
Why does ruby keep saying the camera is not on... he's been driving 4 hours... wtf

Joanna Bowen isn't very sensitive here

He speaks highly of you.
*****
I totally agree with you!
Throw some Shurikens at me!
Haha..is this Bruce Robinson, fishing for compliments?
There can be no true beauty without decay...
Talking shit. How appropriate that I'm sitting here with ring sting off the chilli sauce I ate last night :P
jesus, that coke must have been good
This is what the people who voted for Brexit think all Londoners are like.
We know London’s nothing like this. There’s no Somalians at that table for a start 😏

This is why I hate alcohol and what it does to people.
