As unrealistic as it might be for Ianto to find it... Jack needs the iconic coat.

I agree the sound effects were very childish and could have been executed better, however the actual vomiting of the 456 they’re in service of I think is actually very, very essential.
When you see someone vomiting, what do you think? You think they’re sick, that they need medicine, and so your brain assumes that’s what the 456 is here for. It needs human children because of a disease it has, which is the initial assumption of the ethical question - we would sacrifice our children so this being/species can recover from its illness.
But then this gets flipped on its head because who else vomits? Drug addicts. We assumed the 456 was here for medicine but it’s actually just a junkie who needs a fix. The vomiting isn’t from illness but withdrawal symptoms.
I can’t imagine the 456 without it. The creepy yet soothing voice contrasts so well with these base, guttural sounds to remind us that the 456 isn’t some ethereal being, it’s no move than a common addict in search of a new high. That’s who we’re actually fighting against - someone so obsessed with a new high that it doesn’t care how many lives it destroys in the pocess, and without that constant duality to the character, you lose so much in what it’s actually about.

      Exactly this.
It gets even darker when you add that we never detect the "mothership" and never learn if there is more than one "individual" 456.
Humanity could've handed over it's children to one lone alien junkie in withdrawal... And that's scary.

I think the reason it has those fits of rage and spits out the slime is withdrawal symptoms as it's not getting the high from the kids

I don't really mind the recreation of the base. The Hub had to go for real world reasons, and I think the in-universe reason made sense too while also working on a dramatic level: to destroy the safe, secure, home-like feeling the Hub had established over the prior two series. The new base didn't ever feel that secure - they're in a big shed. We're given every indication the team are resourceful enough as a unit, their next move being to put together a reasonable base of operations in short order tracks for me.
I do think it also sets up the false sense of security for the next episode that they're getting back on track and are going to win. Then...episode 4 happens, and that is shattered.

I like how if you told the 456 something it didn't like it'd vomit and bash its head on its tank. I need to try that at work.

You can't just vomit. It has to be "projectile" vomit!

I never thought I'd see a Who-adjacent show have better CGI and practical effects than the entirety of Disney but here we are, aside from those ridiculous sound effects which were clearly half inched from a children's show.

Think you were very harsh on this one, the 456's arrival and scenes of dialogue are so engaging and completely make up for the cringe montage at the start. I'd put this one higher than both Day 1 and Day 2.

Ianto states that all the Torchwood software are still on the servers, mostly likely offshore server farms dedicated to The Torchwood Institute unknown to the Government.
What kinda annoyed me about COE is that Torchwood is supposed to be outside the government and beyond the United Nations. A privately funded organisation by the Crown and Her Majesty The Queen.
So basically if it was found out that The Government did an attack on Torchwood could be seen as a sign of treason. Not to mention what about the last Torchwood cell?
Torchwood Two was said to be a place in Glasgow, a very strange man in the first episode Everything Changes. I mean could Torchwood Two's leader be one of the folks during Scotland exchange of the Orphans.... It feels that they forgot their own world building and has Torchwood Three become the only piece of Torchwood left on Earth.

Lastly, Jack's outfit getting reacquired isn't impossible. Especially in London where there are a few regiment stores with WWII Era Clothing. Now if they had brought back his Revolver, I'd understand your complaint. But fortunately, that's one state of continuity that stays with Jack, clearly his Revolver was destroyed with The Hub.

In my head, the 456 look like those crabby monster things from the first Ratchet and Clank game.

Right, okay mate, I have to say this.
I don't work for Torchwood, nor am I a legendary software hacker. But I find it's quite easy to install a new operating system on a laptop without the Windows log in password. You just need a USB stick and mash a certain button at boot up.
Great series of vids though. x

I thought the vomiting was an excellent choice. It was completely terrifying to have a creature vomiting for an unknown reason and not acknowledging it. It reminded me of the mist. We had no idea if vomiting was even a sign of sickness? Was it disgust? Was the vomit an attack? If they breathe poison their vomit would be poison too. It’s horrible and I loved how disturbing it was.
I was totally with the diplomat who ran out of the room

Wow, I completely forgot about the stealing/shopping spree. I guess I blocked it out of my memory to retain the high quality I view this series in, cos… yeahhh, thats really bad. There are so many other ways around that, a backup base only Jack knew about with essentials in case of a crisis like this would have been perfectly plausible, or even just addressing the moral dilemma raised by needing to become criminals to survive and stop whatever’s going on.
But as it stands, yeah that scene is… not great. 😂

The splatting sound effects are the single worst thing about this entire series. On my first viewing I was so gripped with intense anxiety and as soon as that effect played it ripped it all away

This series was great but one of the let down factors, for me, was discovering that Jack delivered the children all those years ago. Why? It's such an annoying trope. The main character has to be involved with all things at every and all times. It bothered me quite a bit.

    • @TenshiCat
      @TenshiCat Před měsícem

That's fair, but I think the trope is somewhat more interesting here since, of course, were he not immortal, he wouldn't have been able to be involved with that back in the 60s
And it does make sense that he'd be handling an alien threat, since he's been with Torchwood since Victorian times

The 456 needed to vomit because it showed how much of a drug addict it was.
