Clean out the socket with sandpaper on a dowel that you spin with an electric drill. Then stick a Q-Tip down in the socket and fill it up with melted canning wax. Let it cool, remove it, and the wax is a pattern for turning the handle taper.
I sure that would work great. Thanks for the tip!
Thanks, Rex! Always delighted to watch and learn from you. Cheers from Maine
One of these days I hope to make it to a place that has a flea market that actually has good deals on hand tools. Until that time comes,. I'll continue to watch your videos to learn what to look for, what can be fixed, and what to avoid.
Maybe you can work it into a family vacation or work trip. A lot of this stuff is small enough to fit in luggage.
High from Australia. Never heard of scraping for spindle turning, only for cleaning up bowls. A famous Australian woodturner travelled the USA once and found that some turners only use scrapers and found schools teaching the same. He demonstrated the use of chisels to one man and the man was surprised that he didn't need to use sandpaper. to finish the job.
Nice quick tip. 👍
Another way of looking at it might be, not a handles socket chisel, but a shop made plane blade for one of your rebate, moulding or router planes. No awkward handle to adjust your wedge to
What kind of lathe do you have? Great video I am going thru my 30 chisels
could you do a shop tour?
I sure could, and I might!
Damn i wish i could get so many chisels for these prices!
They're out there. Go to places where people don't care about wood tools, like car and tractor flea markets.
@@RexKrueger not many or any where i live. Cheap tools here are cheap quality. Buying chisels on ebay is even more expensive, sellers think a vintage chisel is made of gold . Not to mention the shipping price which is double the chisel price
I totally hear you. Try buying "lots" of chisels. Some estate sale pickers will sell a dozen or more chisels and won't even mention the names on them. These can be a gold-mine. Also, if you just need good chisels that work, you can't beat the Narex chisels. You can get a great set of 4 on Amazon for like $30ish.
@@RexKrueger great! Thank you
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Rex, I love this idea, but unfortunately, your eBay link doesn't work. Can you please give us a seller name or a title to search for? Thanks again for a great idea 😊

I inherited a 3/8” “Winchester”socket chisel from my father. It’s around 100 years old and I’m fairly sure that the handle is the original one. I have not been able to remove the broken handle even though I have whacked it repeatedly on my work bench. I would love to be able to replace the old handle with a new one if I can. Do you have any tips for removing a stubborn old handle?
Drill it out, grab any remaining handle with channel locks and rotate it out
Thank you, I’ll give that a try.
90% of socket chisels have a 7.5 degree taper.
