  • In this week’s video, I talk about why Cantonese is important to me as a CBC (Canadian-born Chinese). When I created my channel six months ago, I never thought so many people would be interested in my content. So let me know in the comments why Cantonese is important to you!

Don't worry if you don't get everything at first. You should watch each video multiple times until you can follow along without the English subtitles and write down any words you are struggling with. Over time, you'll piece everything together the same way you did with your native language. My goal is to build a complete Cantonese immersion course that will get you to the conversational level. So stay tuned for the next video!

I think Cantonese has a greater community of learners who have emotional reasons to learn, rather than business etc, which is a contrast to mandarin. I like to think that emotional reasons make it more likely to be successful in sticking with it, however it’s difficult with the lack of consistent Cantonese resource. So thank you Brittany for creating great regular content, and helping the Cantonese learning community grow.

My dad emotionally abused me. He would curse me out in cantonese, tell me things to specifically hurt me and bring me down. Nothing I did would ever stop him from getting angrier. When he did stopped talking or he went away it would feel like I could finally relax and breathe. I think eventually I associated cantonese with pain, shame, and guilt. I avoided cantonese and everything to do with my culture. I really want to take back this part of my identity. I have tried and quit after feeling discouraged by my progress but seeing the increase of cantonese content like this on youtube gives me strength. I'd like to try again.

I am a Cantonese speaking father whose children are using more English than Cantonese. I am very sorry to hear what happened to you. Your case sounds like someone I know. He surname is Chan too.
It was not right to emotionally abuse children. However, such unfortunate things do happen. May be the fathers do not realise they are inflicting hurt to their children. May be they are stressed at that moment. May be they are not great communicators (I wasn't when my kids were small). May be they were victims when they were small. May be a breakdown in communication (quit likely).
But please don't associate Cantonese with pain. Cantonese is a great culture. I am very happy my grown up children will occasionally chit chat with me in Cantonese. I am fine with even broken Cantonese. Try mix with decent people who are Cantonese speaking and discover your roots.
I am now conducting Cantonese classes to young adults. Trust me. There are young people taking classes.
      All the best.

Hi. Just discovered this channel. I'm a CBC. My first languages are Taishan 台山 and Xinhui 新会. Taishan is my mother's dialect and Xinhui is my father's. Depending on which side of the family I spoke to, I switch dialects. As I grew older, I had more of my father's side of the family around, so spoke more Xinhui and less Taishan. Also, my parents sent me to Chinese school where they taught Cantonese. A lot of TV shows and movies I watched with my parents were in Cantonese. I would say I'm most comfortable speaking Xinhui more.
When I met my wife, she and her side of the family spoke English very well. In order to show respect for her parents, I do try to speak Cantonese. As I don't speak this dialect much anymore since I stopped going to Chinese school decades ago, I had to really concentrate to speak Cantonese. I do try to speak Cantonese to my in-laws because I found it a great opportunity to speak more Cantonese. Because I mostly speak Xinhui or Taishan, I make some mistakes because I sometimes use the wrong words. For example, rain in Cantonese is 落雨. In Xinhui and Taishan, it's 落水.
My literacy is pretty poor. I didn't really used my reading and writing much. Lately, I've been more interested in learning more reading and writing. The main reason is that I am rediscovering the Chinese (mostly Cantonese) songs I used to listen to a lot when I was younger. I had a hard time understanding Chinese songs mainly because my literacy was poor back then. You also lose the tonal quality of the words/characters in songs. I don't think I understood the meaning of much of the Chinese music I used to listen to.
The past 5 years or so, I have been rediscovering those Chinese songs. It started when my mother was wanting to listen to her old songs, but she lost all of her old records and CD's when they downsized their home. She asked me to find some songs for her. I found some and found I really enjoyed them. I then looked for other songs that I used to listen to back in the 70's and 80's.
With the internet and various translations apps and sites, I was able to look up the lyrics and pronunciations of the songs and tried to translate them. I had to get help from my mother-in-law as my reading was quite poor. I was never able to learn the songs because I had to memorise the sounds only. Now, having the tools to find the pronunciations with Jyutping that I never had back then, I am able to learn how to properly sing a lot of songs. I also understand the meaning of them as well. As I have learned how to sing dozens of songs, it has improved my literacy. I still feel my literacy is poor, but getting better with this exposure to Chinese.
I just started watching a few of your videos. It's great you have Chinese subtitles, so it helps improve my reading. I still find there are words and sayings in Cantonese that is still beyond me. I love having the exposure.
I wished that I had put more effort in learning Cantonese when I was in Chinese school. I didn't like going as it was another class after regular school and extra homework every day as well. I didn't appreciate learning Cantonese back then. I'm enjoying trying to learn more Cantonese, mainly through learning the Chinese songs I have in my collection.

I never truly appreciated my Cantonese background until one time I listened to an old school HK standup special (棟篤笑) on cassette as a kid. The comedians joked about the difference between using only plain speech (白話) and using a mix of proverbs and wordplay to liven up the conversation. To me, the variety and versatility of spoken Cantonese made me appreciate how lively and fun it is to use. I wish I could still find that special somewhere.

I will let you know why Cantonese is important to me. Even though I have no Chinese blood in my body, I grew up in a place with many Cantonese speakers (somewhere in Toronto). When i was in high school, it was not at all unusual for me to be in situations in which people would be freely switching between English and Cantonese in their conversations, and I have close friends who speak Cantonese at home. I encountered Cantonese frequently, and I developed a strong affinity for it, but despite my efforts, to this day I still have not succeeded in teaching it to myself. Now, I live far away from where I grew up, and sadly, the language is not at all relevant in my day-to-day life. Even so, I have learned the language of where I live now, which is vastly different to English, and it is still my hope that somehow one day I will be able to learn Cantonese. Indeed, this video showed up in my CZcams recommendations because of my continuing interests in finding ways to learn.

Hi Brittany, my story: For the first time in 38 years, I went to visit my family from my mother's side in Hong Kong. I was in doubt if my Cantonese would be good enough to communicate with them. Although I didn't understand everything, it was more than enough to be able to talk to my cousins, aunts and uncles. That made them and me so happy I'm more motivated than ever to improve my Cantonese. Can't wait to go back to Hongkong and a bit sooner than 38 years.

Personally I watch these videos in an effort to resuscitate what little I know of the language. I lived in Guangdong about 20 years ago, and the expectation for foreigners was to learn Mandarin first. There were plenty of books, tapes, and at that time the city was bilingual - many people from other provinces meant that Mandarin was the lingua franca. So I became intermediate-level conversational. But the heart of the city was still Cantonese. So in my English classes I had a teaching assistant who translated what I said into Cantonese and little by little I was able to piece certain words and sentences together. Not so well as to speak - if your tones aren't pitch perfect you don't have a chance in being understood as a gwailou - but certainly to understand. o sik teng, m sik gong. So I watch these videos because I want to keep this part of my brain alive, I guess.

I don’t know if it’s a Canadian or American thing but I am impressed. I’m impressed of the comments as well. Some of My relatives back in San Francisco don’t speak Cantonese and I don’t think there’s a desire to learn. Maybe because they think that Cantonese is just not that important. Many thanks indeed for this, which is lovely to hear. I lived in Hong Kong for a year 24 years ago, on the back of a four-year Chinese degree at SOAS, back in the day when it was a slightly odd choice at uni. Although what I learned at uni was Mandarin and I lived in Beijing, going to Hong Kong left something so special within my heart and soul which will never be dislodged. I worked hard at Cantonese in that year, then left Hong Kong, never to return. But Cantonese has stayed with me, though I rarely speak it, though fluency in Mandarin also lends itself to a certain fluency in Cantonese, even if you rarely speak it out loud! It's such a lovely and fascinating language. I often guess my way from Mandarin to Cantonese - remembering the rule our teachers taught us at uni about the relationship between the tones of Mandarin and those of Cantonese eg the rising tone in Mandarin is usually always the low falling (ie its complete opposite) tone in Cantonese. If you know the system, you can make a fairly accurate stab at the right tone (ballpark). Why is Cantonese important to me? It's beautiful!

    • @BrokenAlmonds
      @BrokenAlmonds Před 4 lety +3

I'm an ABC (American) who grew up in a place without a huge Cantonese-speaking community. In my experience, the dominant Western society has subtle ways of making people ashamed of their background and encourages linguistic and cultural assimilation at the expense of one's heritage. So I wouldn't be so quick to discount your younger self as simply "lazy."
On another note, I too am pretty illiterate in Chinese - I only know about 600-800 characters according to this test hanzitest.herokuapp.com/. Some sources say you need to know about 3000 to be able to read the news. For reference, Chinese people graduate high school knowing about 4500, and well-educated Chinese people know 8,000+ characters.
I've been using Remembering the Traditional Hanzi by James Heisig to learn 3k characters. It uses mneumonics to help you memorize them well. It doesn't include pronunciation or words that are commonly created with the character though, so I use different dictionaries, like Pleco, MDBG, and CantoDict to look those up if necessary. So far, I've gone through 100+ characters this way. About 1/3 of them were familiar to me already, but the book totally changed my way of understanding the character & for the ones I would recognize in context but not be able to really recall, the book has helped a loooot. I would recommend this method to you as well. You can find some very heated debates about the Heisig method online or in YT comments, as well, if you want to know the pros and cons!
I'm happy to share resources with others also striving to improve their language abilities! Let me know what you think!

Hi! I'm in the U.S. and I'm learning Cantonese because it's my boyfriend's first language and his family speaks it at all family gatherings. They all told me I don't need to worry about learning it, but his mom has his sister translate for us when she wants to ask me questions or get to know me and this makes me sad. I'm still a beginner, but I find your videos SO helpful! Thank you so much!

Thanks for sharing, Brittany! I'm improving my Cantonese for reasons of heritage, speaking to some family members more easily, and also to be able to work with Cantonese-speaking low-income communities. That is my dream! I'm an ABC (American, gotta distinguish cause I saw some people are from Australia. Sorry about the term "ABC" kind of overshadowing you all, Aussie Cantonese people). However, my parents were born and raised in a non-Chinese country, so even they have different language abilities, especially in terms of literacy, when compared to Chinese folks who are from China, HK, Singapore, etc. I hope to improve my speaking skills to fluency and become literate to be able to use Cantonese in my everyday life!

Listening to you makes me think of my auntie in NY, she works as seamstress. Fond memories, only relative at NY. She super bright, she immigrated in NY at her 30's and was able to pick up English. However after my grandpa passed away and my grandma moved away, I had very little reason to speak Cantonese at home since everyone understood English. At my core, culture is so important to me that I want to be able to express myself in my mother tongue. Thank you so much! Exploring it has also opened new insights into the deep, rich culture of my Chinese friends.

I grew up with native Vietnamese-Accent Cantonese. My English has Queens NYC accent (it is my second language but became my dominant language through repetition and schooling). Sadly there wasn't much Cantonese schooling for me. I had to learn Mandarin in Saturday school & later in college but failed (I didn't retain any). I had to learn Spanish in middle and high school to pass. My Spanish got high scores but I DIDNT retain much. Sad since I met, dated, and now married my wife who is Puerto Rican/Dominican/NYCer. She's fluent in Spanish/English and knows how to read Latin, read French but not able to pronounce French, beginner Italian read/speak Japanese intermediate but not conversational, beginner in Korean. She wants to get into Cantonese and Mandarin Chinese.

@@cantobritt lol very UNbias. I'm happy there's so many Cantonese resources. Growing up I kept hearing from my CANTONESE speaking family that *it was a dying language and that I should learn Mandarin.* My Mandarin instructors tended to be very strict and without Mandarin speaking friends to practice with,....I just couldn't retain it. *Most of my ABC cousins couldn't retain any of their Chinese.*
