    Awesome to hear another person speak my toishan!! I was born in SF,Ca in the 1950's, so my parents spoke it. I could speak toishan, but grew up at a young age to coummnacate to parents, while speaking English on the outside to others. I'm in my 60's now, and seldom use it, as my parents are gone, still able to speak it on a limited basis .

    I'm vietnamese and tones 2 and 5 sound virtually the same, equivalent to the vietnamese nặng tone. I repeated listened back and forth and they sounded the same or inconsistent. If you hook it up to a pitch meter the difference would be like half or a quarter of a semitone maybe. Might just be the context

    • @littlewishy6432
      @littlewishy6432 Před 2 měsíci

      2 and 5 are both rising, which is probably what's throwing you off. The difference is that 2 is higher and 5 is lower.

    • @RLstavista
      @RLstavista Před 2 měsíci

      they both dip down slightly before rising, hence they're equivalent to the questioning tone (dấu hỏi) and the heavy tone (dấu nạng) respectively. The tricky tones are 1, 3, 4, 6 which can sometimes sound rising/falling, or just constant. I think it's better to just use this as a guide and rely on repeated experience @@littlewishy6432

    Hi. Just discovered this channel. I'm a CBC. My first languages are Taishan 台山 and Xinhui 新会. Taishan is my mother's dialect and Xinhui is my father's. Depending on which side of the family I spoke to, I switch dialects. As I grew older, I had more of my father's side of the family around, so spoke more Xinhui and less Taishan. Also, my parents sent me to Chinese school where they taught Cantonese. A lot of TV shows and movies I watched with my parents were in Cantonese. I would say I'm most comfortable speaking Xinhui more. When I met my wife, she and her side of the family spoke English very well. In order to show respect for her parents, I do try to speak Cantonese. As I don't speak this dialect much anymore since I stopped going to Chinese school decades ago, I had to really concentrate to speak Cantonese. I do try to speak Cantonese to my in-laws because I found it a great opportunity to speak more Cantonese. Because I mostly speak Xinhui or Taishan, I make some mistakes because I sometimes use the wrong words. For example, rain in Cantonese is 落雨. In Xinhui and Taishan, it's 落水. My literacy is pretty poor. I didn't really used my reading and writing much. Lately, I've been more interested in learning more reading and writing. The main reason is that I am rediscovering the Chinese (mostly Cantonese) songs I used to listen to a lot when I was younger. I had a hard time understanding Chinese songs mainly because my literacy was poor back then. You also lose the tonal quality of the words/characters in songs. I don't think I understood the meaning of much of the Chinese music I used to listen to. The past 5 years or so, I have been rediscovering those Chinese songs. It started when my mother was wanting to listen to her old songs, but she lost all of her old records and CD's when they downsized their home. She asked me to find some songs for her. I found some and found I really enjoyed them. I then looked for other songs that I used to listen to back in the 70's and 80's. With the internet and various translations apps and sites, I was able to look up the lyrics and pronunciations of the songs and tried to translate them. I had to get help from my mother-in-law as my reading was quite poor. I was never able to learn the songs because I had to memorise the sounds only. Now, having the tools to find the pronunciations with Jyutping that I never had back then, I am able to learn how to properly sing a lot of songs. I also understand the meaning of them as well. As I have learned how to sing dozens of songs, it has improved my literacy. I still feel my literacy is poor, but getting better with this exposure to Chinese. I just started watching a few of your videos. It's great you have Chinese subtitles, so it helps improve my reading. I still find there are words and sayings in Cantonese that is still beyond me. I love having the exposure. I wished that I had put more effort in learning Cantonese when I was in Chinese school. I didn't like going as it was another class after regular school and extra homework every day as well. I didn't appreciate learning Cantonese back then. I'm enjoying trying to learn more Cantonese, mainly through learning the Chinese songs I have in my collection.

    Love this. My mother's side of my family speaks Taishanese. I mostly speak my dad's dialect which is Xinhui. Interesting to hear this because it sounds a bit different than how my mother speaks it. I certainly recognise it, but some words are a bit challenging to me.

Going from Vietnamese to Chinese I'm guessing can be super easy but THIS is smth different :D Interesting
