Out of my comfort zone, street portraits in Amsterdam by Fiona Lark

- In this video I travel to Amsterdam to take street portraits. This is a million miles away from what I normally do, taking photos of the Lakes and mountains in the Lake District. I get so inspired by so many street photographers who make it look so easy. I wanted to try doing something completely out of my comfort zone. I think I was more worried about making people feel uncomfortable and self conscious along with my fear of being rejected. Although I was so nervous and it was harder than I thought it would be I really enjoyed this experience and met some beautiful souls on that hot August day in Amsterdam.
Thank you for taking the time to watch.
Let me know what you think and what you’d like to see in future videos.

What a beautiful video. You are so kind and I appreciate the pictures you took of Louisa and me. Thanks again!
I especially liked the one of the young man holding his violin, the light, the texture, the way he clutched his instrument, his expression. For me, your portrait told me enough of his story to want to know more.
Super little short - I loved it and the photos you came up with. Great work by Ray Z some of his shots were incredible
Love it, Fiona! Taking the courage to approach a stranger... you're way bolder than me. The best I've ever done is stand tens of meters away, strap on my zoom lens, and click.
Excellent photos.
So evocative watching the film
Wonderful video, cant wait to see more.
Wonderful video about your foray into street portraits, and those resulting photos are lovely.
You take great images, and I myself are like you on the street, but you feel very good when people say yes to taken their pictures, and then it builds your confidence. Thanks
Thank you for this video Fiona. For such an experienced photographer it is encouraging to see that you share the same trepidations as those of us who are just heading out into the world of street photography.
Wow!....welldone !...the both of you ought to be very proud! XOXO XXX
Wonderful video, very inspiring, thank you
What a wonderful video. And the photos were great. Thank you for sharing your process.
What an inspirational photographer. Listening to your description of your adventure is like having s coffee with an old friend. Thank you for sharing.
Great job challenging yourself. Great video.
THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR EXPERIENCE FIONA!!! Great video!!! Awesome photos!!! Keep shooting keep sharing keep smiling!!!! May your love, laughter and creativity be as abundant as the air we breath!!!!
Beautiful video, Fiona. After shooting anything and everything for the past few years, it's street photography that I enjoy the most.
Nice job, well done. Street photography equals fun. From Holland with love.
A lovely video Fiona and it looks like you can turn your photographers eye to any situation. Loving the black and white shots over the colour ones but maybe that’s just me? I can’t wait to see your next video. Thank you. Tony
Such a nice and polite approach ... Very well done with beautiful results!
"to cultivate de courage to be uncomfortable..." being an introvert and shy person I find this truly encouraging, doing something so far from your usual photography and with such lovely results is admirable. street photography is fascinating. thanks for sharing this experience. the video is beautiful.
Fiona your photos are beautiful
Hey Fiona, it was great being there with you thanks to this video. Your approach to people and your beautiful voice intimidate me. Greetings from Poland :)
Well done Fiona. Approaching strangers is far from easy. You did a great job and the images are fantastic. I love creating images of strangers. You have inspired me to do more. 👍🏽📷👍🏽
What a beautiful video, Fiona, in my Amsterdam, my working-area for streetphotography :-)) You did very well here !
❤❤❤❤ love this so much. Street photography isn’t as easy as it seems. Just asking to take someone’s photo is half of the work and it is much larger than most would assume. The fear of rejection or the hesitation to even bother them. You are a beautiful sweet soul.
🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼carnt say better than that brilliant my friend 😘
Such a lovely video of 'my' Amsterdam. I absolutely adore your photography style. The camera man did a great job too!
Fantastic..
Great video. And very inspiring too.
Fiona, I could feel your tension ☺ BUT, what a set of pictures. IMHO these aren't just 'street portraits'.....you have captured something of each person in their picture. Lovely images, with your particular edit style. Love them.
I started following your work 2 days ago (thanks Sean Tucker, you continue to inspire...not only yourself, but through so many other gifted artists whose work you bring to life through your channel...RESPECT!). PHENOMENAL does not even begin to cover my admiration. I have spent the last 48 hours MESMERIZED by the beautiful and enthralling play of shadow and light in your works on Instagram...and in those 48 hours you changed the whole idea of photography for me in so many ways. STUNNING work!
Seeing Amsterdam through your lens has been such a treat. Thank you for sharing your gift with the world.
Outstanding Fiona! You took a difficult and sensitive personal experience and turned it into a learning experience for all of us. You seemed quick to dismiss your work as almost inadequate, however your results were amazing! I’d be surprised if any one of your subjects wasn’t impressed with your skill and mastery of your craft.
Vey brave Fiona, well done to you and you lovely friend for capturing you diving into the wilderness of street photography! ; )
Been following your work for a long long time and I just wanted to tell you that I just love your work and I am crazy about your smile. Sorry for the unintended creepiness 😛
Thank you for this video Fiona! I really enjoyed seeing you in action!
Your work is so inspirational. I can identify with so much of what you shared. It has encouraged me to stretch my comfort zone a little. Thanks for sharing your beautiful work and wonderful videos.
Great video Fiona , I've been waiting to see you do street photography as you eye for light is a gift and you did not disappoint
Hi Fiona, very thoughtful and insightful video. Good of you to share your process and express your learnings. Very touching.
Fantastic video and beautiful photos. Well done Fiona.
After you've found your own soul. Isn't it nice to connect with others? ly
Absolutely love your style and approach Fiona, i'm going to try a change of direction in near future. Thank you Sean Tucker for the link to Fiona's work.
Beautiful photos, lovely lady
Very nice video Fiona. I like your use of shadows and light in your work. I accidentally was there this morning in the Rijksmuseum to see the exhibition of Erwin Olaf. Nice scenery over there to take pictures.
Beautiful stories ❤❤ street photography is really scary but i bet it can be loads of fun as well. You did great
I took my first portrait shots of strangers on a recent trip to India. No matter how many I took, and how nice and willing some of the subjects were, the next was always just as difficult. Each rejection was also just as difficult to accept as the last. Yet, despite all of that, I kind of enjoyed the process and finally came away with some photos I'm really proud of (and now they all have a story, if somewhat short, of an interaction with a complete stranger). Keep doing what your doing 😊. Loved your piece on Sean Tucker's channel...fantastic photos.
Beautiful 👍
Thank you so much for your content, it's absolutely inspiring. What I love the most about this video is your music choice, it sets the tone so well it makes you not want to stop watching. Great taste on music and of course in photography. Keep it up!!
Well done Fiona, good on you.
video editing is first class...music wow
Lovely video. The experience and tone of character matches so well with the monochromatic video. Such a window into the discomfort that so many of us feel in these situations. Inspiring in the way you so modestly "overcome" that vulnerability. In the end it all comes down to human beings connecting. I guess the lens is just an extension of the photographer. Bravo and thank you for sharing.
Encouraging and motivating video Fiona.
New subscriber. I anxiously await your new photography videos. Hoping I can learn from you as well as enjoy your images.
Lovely! I love that you talked through your process
Great video!
Love everything you do! What an amazingly inspiring and original style that so many are lacking nowadays!
Fantastic video Fiona! It takes a lot of guts to walk up to complete strangers like that so good on ya! The resultant photos were superb too 👌 And beautifully filmed, great work Ray 🙌
Thanks mate. :)
Congratulations Fiona ! Way to go !
Nice work

nice work yes that is hard to do for sure..... keep up the awesome work. and remember ever pictures is a saved moment in time :)
Well done. I'm proud of you. :) xx
Nicely done Fiona
Oh Fiona how could anyone refuse you. Just keep adding strings to your bow.
This was so wonderful Fiona! It's very inspiring that you tried something that was a challenge to yourself. It inspires me and I'm sure many more of us that we should also strive to face new things that could make us uncomfortable for our own growth :) Looking forward to your next.
‘How difficult could it be?’ Bloody difficult!!! I’m just trying to learn to do it myself, and generally people are ok, but it doesn’t make asking any easier does it? 😺😺😺😺
That´s something i need to do also, take pictures of living things hahaha. In an event or party is very easy but in the streets i always freezy, i think that i am invading their privacy in some way, i don´t know. But definitely, i need to do it more.
evening Fiona. I've been shooting street portraits for quite a while now and started doing workshops teaching people back in April. it's a very lifting and life affirming style.of photography. My overall tip for shooting strangers is to try /attempt to get 10 no's in a row. it's not new logic but works with shy people. if you get a no
...no harm done your right back where you started.

btw I love your work;)
Bonjour! Make you want to take pictures by your attitude towards people in the street, black and white will keep you going very well
Need to do this as well. Getting out of the comfort zone is always a good way to grow. What lens did you use? 24-70?
DER PRiNZ - Photography 24-105 :)
Ahhh...ok. I think I will go with an M50 and an adapted 50mm 1.8 which will be an awesome light and unintrissive setup. How did you handle the legal stuff? At least here in Germany it’s not so easy to publish pictures of people without their (written) permission.
Bit more relaxed in Holland and UK, although I did ask permission off everyone and gave them my card, it’s just how I wanted to do it. The last thing I wanted to do was upset anyone.
What lens were you using?
What lense did you shoot these portraits with?
Do you post the camera settings?
Great work Fiona...stepping out of your comfort zone. Nice portraits as well. It is more challenging facing someone and asking permission than sniping from across the way. Rejection when you have a vision is tough. I have tried both. I love street photography. IG: @venusrisingphoto
Thank you for sharing your experience of street portraits, I admire people stepping out of their comfort zone. Impressive and beautiful pictures by the way :) @bengtsall_photography 😎🌹
Fiona is such a babe. There, I said it.
It is actually not that difficult to ask strangers on the street for a picture. You need to understand, that most people like to be photographed in an at least seemingly professional setting - and most people are in fact flattered to be asked to be photographed. Also, it is absolutely ok and understandable that some people simply hate to be photographed, they will decline the offer. No loss for you, since just a couple steps away the next person is already happily waiting to be asked.
Totally different is it, to take pictures of people without asking them. Most people hate that, and the photographer will be despised. Asking people is actually creating a win-win situation: the photographer will be acknowledged and the photographed person will feel good and elevated to be assessed as being interesting enough to be photographed.
Please, not one more street photographer. Please don't do what all others do. Your different way of seeing yourself is what makes you special, not a black and white processing of very usual portraits.
