Cruising for the win. Everything is someone else's responsibility. No poop hose. No maintenance. Food served every day, three meals a day. No fuel stops. No tire blowouts. Did I say no maintenance?
If only it were more affordable like camping, once you have bought the rv and all you need to camp!
Cruising equals crowds, chaos at the breakfast and lunch buffet, reservations for shows, third world medical care, loss of legal rights and finally the same old worn cruise line controlled captive ports. What ever happened to the port variety and onboard service that made cruising popular...now it is such a chore in many, many respects. Think three times before making a "non-refundable" deposit.
Both have their advantages. Cruising is easier, to be sure, but RVing enables you to do your thing on your own schedule. Plus, we spent about the same on an 11 week RV tour of Alaska as we would have on a 7 day cruise.
If I can’t drive the boat I don’t want to go!
You can’t beat the food on a cruise there’s nothing you have to do except sit down that part I love
I understand your premise, but its apples and oranges. My wife and I love both. An Alaskan Cruise really is akin to a finger foods sampler buffet (food and buffet references are mandatory since it was a cruise video) where planning and RVing your own itinerary is unique and special for your ability to customize to your wants and wishes. That said, expensive as they may be, an Alaskan cruise is far more attainable to the majority of people than a proper RV tour of Alaska.
Keep in mind that when you started Rving you had a learning curve. That is how cruising is also.
You definitely want to go outside of the port shops to get local crafts.
We love cruising and RVing.

I was stationed at Fort Lewis Near Tacoma Washington 95-98 we took the ferry across to Victoria and went to Buchart Gardens. It was beautiful. Also walked around in Victoria.
Ketchikan was our first port. That was the nicest day we had.
I laid my mom's ashes to rest in Sitka where she grew up. The weather was the same as what you saw but it is a lovely little berg.
Our last cruise in January we got a very bad case of Covid and positive for 3 weeks. My Father was in Sika during WWII. He went radio school there and learned how to run the bug. Then he was stationed out on Adak for the duration of war.
We were on the Royal Princess August of 2018 from Whittier to Vancouver. 2 Favorite excursions: The White Pass Train in Skagway and the Aleutian Ballad Crab Boat in Ketchikan. We saw lots of whales in Juneau. We actually enjoyed both the cruise and our RV because they are so different. Looking forward to another Alaska Cruise in a few years.
Hey! Just thought i'd let you know! About 2 years ago my brother and sister in law that i lost to cancer , they took there ashes to sitka! suprizing enough I just found out I had lung cancer ! Im doing ok now they took my cancer surgically On 9/11! thanks for sharing sitka with me!

We have cruised about 300 nights, until we bought a our 4th RV in 2016 after very many cruises and only had 3 more cruises planned. Alaska, and 2 trans-atlantic cruises to and from Europe. The plan was to drive the RV to the Northwest do the Alaska, then spend a summer in Europe, but covid hit, after 1 more short cruise we gave up cruising and continued Rving and settle for a road trip to Alaska. Now we are upgrading the old Class C head to the Northwest, with out a cruise. We have a few photos on CZcams and Facebook about the changes now.

Wow, for a moment I thought the bath/shower was something from an older hotel/motel set-up. However, as you guys mentioned, it all works. And for us, when we are on a Cruise, we generally don't spend a lot of time in our rooms anyways. Interesting that many of those RV parks were no where near full in late June. That was just amazing to see. Alchemy Bars are always a lot of fun on a cruise. Expensive, but a lot of fun.

RVing isn’t even close. After 23 cruises and more scheduled we love the days at sea. Yet, we also RV a couple months a year. Cruising, if we are at a new destination we haven’t been to in the past, we enjoy historical excursions. We usually do one excursion at each port. The Alaska cruise was three days on the ship, and then 11 days on land, across the Yukon, up the Alaska High to Denali, three train rides, sleeping in quaint motels in small towns, meeting local people and eating local fare….great way to see Alaska. Sadly this cruise is no longer offered. We’ve deep sea fished off Hawaii, zip lined through the jungle in Costa Rica,snorkeled around all the Saint islands, went through the Panama and Suez Canals, avoided Pirates off Somalia, cruised the Greek Isles, saw the Roman Coliseum, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and Buckingham Palace, saw goats climbing trees in Morocco, and toured the tunnels under Gibraltar. To see this and more……we each packed a suitcase and left the problems solving at home. The biggest decisions were what to select for dinner and which show to see…the 7 or 9 o’clock and dinner for two with candle light.

All fair points, and as a guy who chooses RVing over any other travel most of the time, I don't need convincing. But 5:00 explains (complete with an extra "only") why they aren't apples to apples comparisons. I've always maintained cruising is ideal for locations that are best or only seen from the water. Other places i wouldn't choose it. So for certain destinations, it's a moot point which is better, there is really only one option.

Pulp mills take trees and make chips and then heat them up in liquor to break them down to hair fibers, then put the slurry onto a wide conveyor that takes it through a press then a dryer, next to a cutter where it is bailed and shipped out to a paper plant in another country usually. Think of like exporting your near raw resources as cheaply as possible and you get the idea...paper mills employ hundreds and hundreds of staff and the finished products bring in the lion's share of the profits.

We have loved both of our Alaska Cruises and also stayed in a Mini-Suite! We did the Duck Boat Tour in Ketchikan which was a great way to see the town. Sorry that the weather did not cooperate with some of your excursions. Glad you had a good time with Phil and Stacey!
Your best bet to spot orca...Puget Bay and the waters around Vancouver. You also need to be where their favorite dinner is...salmon (southern &northern resident) and seals (Bigg's orcas). Alaska I think depends on May or Sept when they travel to and from Alaska. They prefer the narrow passage and cove areas not the open ocean.
Great video showing your travels in Alaska. Inland passage by cruise ship is nice. RV inland can be exciting, with some challenges too. Enjoy your travels!

I have been to Sitka and Ketchikan way back in 1987. I drove from Kansas Alaska and back with a small pick-up and even smaller Pop-up trailer. We took the inner passage way on the way back. It was a great trip.
Enjoyed the sharing of yalls cruise. I guess there is good and bad with anything you do. Looking forward to the next videos

On the open road, whether 2 lane or more seems to be a way for me to relax a little, set the cruise control and find someone to make me a sandwich, what more could someone want. We did our Alaska cruise two weeks after you, my 2 year delayed retirement trip, and we agree on the time constraints of a cruise. Our usual vacations are camping trips where we can change our plans with the weather and/or discovering exactly what the area offers. That said, we don't regret going but, we want to go again either in our own rig when hubby retires, or rent a motor home and explore the northern area around Denali, Valdet, etc. Our stay in Ketchikan was just over 4 hours and the Lumberjack Show along with shuttling to Wards Cove made for a rushed time. On a final note, we did see a lot of humpback whales from our ship along with white sided dolphins, but no Orca.
Thank you for your service, I am an Air Force Veteran and I'm enjoying your vlogs. I'm hoping to we will be part time RV'rs. For now I am more of a weekend warrior with my extended family in a pop up with my Great Dane.

We live in BC and went to Yukon and Alaska in 2019 with our 5th wheel. We spent 2 months traveling and could have spent even longer exploring, hiking, and sightseeing. You would probably travel up through Alberta, Banff, Jasper then to Dawson Creek the start of the ALCAN. It's worth going north to Dawson City then travel Top of the World highway (mostly gravel) to Tok, Fairbanks, Denali NP, then down to the Kenai Peninsula, we took the ferry (& RV) to Valdez. Eventually south to Vancouver. Very worth the trip.
RVing 4 the winner winner seafood dinner!!! The freedom and autonomy we have with the RV is unparalleled!!! You have your house, pets, own transportation, and not beholden to those limited short port visits…they just plain suck!!!
Example. Pulled into Boston on the cruise ship at 0800. Off the ship at 0900 and tour starts at 1000. Tour lasts 3 hours and ship sails at 1600. On to the next port 2 days later - wash rinse and repeat. Only got to experience 5% of Boston. So many things to do and see in Boston.
Fast forward to FTing in our RV. Went to Boston and stayed just west of Boston for a week…gamechanger!!! Experienced and saw sooo much more at a relaxing slow pace plus had a blast!!! Just my 2 cent contribution.

I just finished watching 6-7 months of CZcamsrs “big truck big travels” 7 month Canada alaska trip. You could probably learn some of the places they went to but they also did a whole video on how to plan. So enjoyed watching the 6-7 months. Enjoyed your video on cruise.

Have never been on a cruise. Really don't want to go on one. Would much rather RV up there. Love the video. Also the whales you zoomed in on were Humpbacks, not Orca's.
There are many places in Alaska that you cannot get to in an RV!
This part of Alaska is hard to make a RV vs cruise comparison. Having traveled to these ports as a kid, getting a camper on and off the Alaska Marine Highway boats was a challenge due to the tide schedule. It would be very difficult to take a 5th wheel to these locations. A cruise or the Alaska Marine Highway might be your best option to experience the beauty of this area. As for the weather conditions, the rainy season starts in July. I think cruising during a different time of year and perhaps on a newer ship and/or different cruise line might make a huge difference. Canadian. Used to live a couple hundred K from Dawson Creek. Beautiful trip. Recommend. We went as far as Watson lake. We haul a 41 foot toy hauler. Lots of great places to stay. A highlight for us was Liard Hot Springs. Nice big camping spaces. No power or water or dump. Hot springs very enjoyable.
We did a four months trip this summer. It was almost 11,000 miles round trip from the San Francisco Bay Area. We did it with no reservations. It allowed us the flexibility to stay additional nights in the places we likes. There is constant turnover in the campgrounds plus many beautiful places to boondock. The only think I would have changed was to leave a month earlier. Unfortunately there were other obligations that prevented this. We were amazed at how fast the time flew by. There are multiple ways to travel through Canada so go a different way up and down. It was every bit as beautiful as Alaska. The provincial parks were amazing and usually $20 Canadian or less.

You want to see Alaska, DO IT IN A TRUCK CAMPER. HOST YUKON 11.6 on a F-550/Ram 5500 chassis flatbed and put custom storage under the wings. Oh, and 84” bed so you have room for garage for spare tires, extra fuel and water.
Love your video , We really enjoyed our RV , but sometimes it is nice to take a vacation form the same things over and over again. We have been on a cruise, but never to Alaska. Now I would like to take that cruise to Alaska!

No comparison. Of course we love the freedom our RV gives us, but we will be cruising Alaska next May, with a drive for a second week in Denali to hike. You’re so right about having all your transportation arranged ahead of time. Ours will be a once in a lifetime trip and for all cruising SS short comings it will be amazing !!!

I’ve got these good friends that I swear cruises is all they talk about. Went to their place once and after dinner, we all sat down in the living room and I swear we watched one CZcams walkthrough after another of cruise ships. Four hours worth. I swear, we didn’t go back to their house again, we always proactively invite them over to our place.

This is not an RV tip, but we really enjoyed the fly in to Kennicott and McCarthy Alaska via a bush plane. We Stayed in the Kennicott Inn. We have seen the northern lights a number of times but never like we saw them from the Kennicott Inn!!! Absolutely breath taking!!

June 2024 Royal Princess. Our First Princess Cruise and our First Alaskan Cruise. 14 days. We RV weekends and summers but no comparison to a cruise, totally different experiences. Any cruise is just a sampler of the ports and hardly anything of the culture. We take a cruise to experience the ship and the unique views one can only get from a ship in the ocean. Alaskan cruise will give us more land views than we have ever experienced from a ship before.
We went to Alaska inside passage on princess cruise we enjoyed it and yeah it was a bit structured and as far as the food we learned quickly that you had limit your eating because every time you turn around it was time to eat Lol

Even on your coldest days there, I'm so glad you had friends there to keep your spirits warm! Tara, a splendid choice using Giants' Nest. "Catch the Moon" is another tune of theirs I enjoy.
Orca's are my favorite!! But just as a little tidbit, they are actually the largest member of the dolphin family, not whales. Cheers!
Chad, you mentioned wanting to take RV to Alaska in future. If taking RV on ferries, pay close attention to tide height at times you’ll be driving on or off ferry. Ketchikan has 18’ tide range and Anchorage has close to 30’. With ramp angle of ferry you’ll never get your 5th wheel off ferry with your long overhang at lower tides.
Doesn’t have to be either or, we love both. Cruise every other year. Agree about cruising with friends, but then RVing with friends fun too. Due to cost we mainly RV, but with cruising we don’t have to cook or clean…😊
As an Alaska resident and a 40 foot 5th Wheel owner I have put my rigg on the Alaska Ferry from Haines to Petersburg and it cost $1400.00 one way. If I had put it on in Bellingham WA it would have cost over $8k to Petersburg with my wife, so we drove the Alaska Canada Hwy to Haines. For travel in the summer in Southeast AK expect rain, temps in the 50s and unless you have alot of disposable income to travel the inside passage with your 60+ foot rig plan on hotels or B&Bs for real flexability. We love Alaska but it is not like any of the lower 48, travel here often takes on an adventerous element. The state is 2 1/2 times the size of it's little sister Texas so to say it has a variety of eco-systems is an understatement. We see Humpback whales every week. We here them blow from our porch and see deer, bear, eagles, cranes in our back yard, oh btw we live in town.
3 months in Alaska is awesome. Going bach 2024. 6 months
When I lived in upstate New York the black bears used to eat at the dumps then they closed them and the bears now eat at your campgrounds

If you ever go back, you can rent a car for $75. We did that in Sitka and Ketchikan. The roads end about 10 miles out of town, in both directions. My wife agreed to it, as long as I promised to get her back 90 minutes before departure
Next time you’re driving up or down I-75 between Chattanooga and Knoxville near Calhoun TN open up the windows and if the winds are out of the east you will get a great pulp plant smell 😂. We are hoping to head up Alaska on the ALCAN next summer so you should bring the rig up too.

There are lots of rvers who traveled to Alaska on CZcams here. I've only seen one and that was the motor home experiment aka life with Paul and Laurina. Quite a lot to see and covered everything I think. Watch out for the mud😊

There’s a couple that RV their channel is called big trucks big travels and they just did a few months in Alaska and Canada and they Showed everything
RV is better than cruising🛳! I suppose that's true. Haven't done either, but based on our 'watching experience', it must be true. We lived in Alaska for seven years and visited many places, including Homer, Soldotna, Sweard, Kasilof... I think you would love Homer in the summer. We never visited Haines, Sitka, or Kechikan. ❤❤ Tara, the hair style is beauuuutiful. It suits you.👌

I was an RVer for 20 years. We wore out 3 rigs and went all over the place. My family really enjoyed these times, UNTIL we took a cruise! RV and tow rig for sale!!!
Boondocked all the way across Canada and in Alaska. If there was a road we drove on it. Homer Valdez Seward Fairbanks Anchorage an every town in our travels.
Hey Chad and Tara, unfortunately you experienced the Alaskan weather.....never know what to expect. I live in Alaska, and have for 48 years. Good thing you cruised to southeast as the only way to get your vehicle there is by Alaska Marine Hywy, except for Haines and Skagway.
When you deive up, there is so much to do. May amd June are typically our sunny warmer times of year and rain starts mid July on through August.
Salmon start running late May all over south central, which is all driveable. There are some spectacular things to do here. If interested, I can suggest things, places and activities.
Any chance of doing a meet and greet for you folowers up here once you get here?
Hope you enjoy Alaskaore when you drive up. So much to do, and need a month or better to explore.

I lived in Fairbanks for 3 months for work. We would explore on weekends and wildlife was everywhere. We went to Valdez most of the time because the boat trips were awesome. We put 1300 miles on the rental car in 3 months. We went on a cruise last year, I would suggest your second trip be a land one. You will see the real beauty of Alaska. I did not like Anchorage, its were every thing comes in and too many people. I got to see Denali and 24 hours of sun. If you would like to see my pics, send me a note. I was there in April-June.
The only bears we saw on our Cruise was this Bear Rescue venue!
I won't disagree with you that RV is better than cruising, but then again I've never been on a cruise. Regarding the back of the buss, of course you were put there, that's where all of the cool kids hang out. A pulp mill is where they make wood pulp out of trees to make paper. Glad you had fun in AK although it wasn't a much fun as RVing. OK guys I'm up for a 2025 trip to AK and I have a motorcycle so you'll have riding buddies. Keep the good stuff coming guys.
Loved your video. I HIGHLY recommend you watch "Big Truck Big Travels". They just spent 6 MONTHS traveling Alaska and cover so much; Provincial park camping, fueling, Starlink, Dates when a lot of camping/RV places open and close for the season. There are a lot of episodes but so much information. Also showed how much food (canned, boxed, bagged) they took with them to reduce there costs. EVERYTHING in Alaska cost more, everything.

My kids wanted me to go on an Alaskan cruise with them and their families. I passed in favor of solo camping in SE Utah. I’d love to see Alaska but no desire of going on a cruise.

I was in Nashville with friends and we have a very scary ride from the hotel to the airport. The driver gassed for a yellow light and ran a red light. Then in the freeway he was doing 85 - 90 miles per hour. He eventually turned off the dash lights so I couldn’t see his speed.
Nope! If it was an Uber or Lyft, I hope you reported him.. That's crazy!
I missed your First part of your cruise video, but did you get to visit Talkeetna Alaska? I really want to go on a Alaska cruise and stop and visit Talkeetna, just think I would like it there from the pictures but more from what I've read about the place.
