  • What is the best spinning reel of the KastKing baitfeeder style spinning reels? This video compares the KastKing Sharky III baitfeeder for saltwater fishing and the KastKing Pontus baitfeeder spinning reel, which is a freshwater fishing reel. A baitfeeder spinning reel is great to have among your fishing gear and how to cast a spinning reel is same as the fishing reels compared here. Whether you are bass fishing with live bait with the KastKing Pontus as sometimes is done in Florida or other areas for catfishing or saltwater surf fishing with cut bait fish using a KastKing Sharky III for striped bass, there’s a lot of uses for these types of fishing reels. If you’re a beginner fishing and trying to decide what spinning reel is best for the money, take a look at this video to compare.

    I have both of these reels. Just got the Sharky III a few weeks ago. I've always used the pontus for both salt and fresh water fishing. The pontus will hold up to saltwater as long as it's rinsed / cleaned / oil regularly.
    My pontus 5000 is paired with a Shakespeare TideWater 7' and the Sharky III 6000 paired with a Shakespeare BigWater 7' which I have yet to use. I've used the pontus mainly for catching huge BatRays and soon Leopard Sharks. It has no problem reeling in big fish.
    Both offer the same amount of drag. The biggest difference between the two is the bearing count, gear ratio and the water type.

      i have 2 of the sharkys and my dad has one all 3 have had problems one wont disengage the baitrunner and 1 completely locked up gears broken other one stopped clicking for regular drag. so although they might work for a while i wouldnt recommend. heard the okuma baitfeeders are better for the money cant gaurentee that but thats all ive heard. if you want a baitfeeder that will last forever shimanos are amazing. they are like 4-5 times more expensive but they will last. just my opinion

    Regardless of reel ratio you can not use that information alone to determine if one reel is faster just because its a higher ratio. The spool size is the other half that matters. Because the pontus is larger it could very easily be just as fast or faster than the sharky 3. The only way to know for sure is to Pull off 5 ft of line and mark a spot on the line closest to the spool. Then turn the handle one revolution and mark the line again in the same area. Pull the line back off and measure the distance. I have a baitrunner with a 5.5 ratio and another with a 4.7 ratio. The 5.5 reel retrieves 36 inches of line per handle turn but the 4.7 reel retrieves 39 inches. The "slower" reel actually retrieves line faster. These numbers change when you have less or more line on them. A reel with a full spool of line will retrieve more than than a same model reel that has less line on the spool. It is about the diameter. If you didn't want to measure line to determine which retrieves more line like if you were out shopping, just measure the diameter of the spool. Be sure you measure from the point where line contacts the spool on one side to the opposite side of the spool. Let's say its 2 inches. Circumference of a circle is equal to (pi or approximately 3.14)multiplied by the diameter. 2 x 3.14= 6.28 inches. So 6.28 inches of line will go around the spool once. Next we need the gear ratio and let's say its 4.0:1 so that means for every handle turn the spool rotates 4 times. Then we take 6.28 inches and multiply x 4 = 25.12 inches of line retrieved per 1 turn of the handle on an empty spool. Do the same for the reel you are comparing and then you actually have useful information about how much line the reel retrieves. Reel companies should provide that information as well as gear ratio. I hope this helps someone. Tight lines!!! Thanks for the video!

    Kastking sharky.. i have the 3000, i like it , very well built.
    1 side note... its not really braid ready, that is not rubber in the main spool. its knurled aluminum and it does not go across the full with of the spool (say like a upperline Pflueger) I have had my 20/30 lb kastking camo braid slip , so a round or 2 of black electrical tape is necessary. Otherwise a great real and their like is good too. nice video also. Enjoy

      with that many moving parts there isn't going to be a guarantee on it being waterproof. I do know that it is designed for both fresh and saltwater. Meaning that the bearings are a bit different than a normal freshwater reel so that it will last and not corrode in the slatwater.

    +KastKing I am thinking of buying a Pontus and a KastKat rod. I already have a size 6000 salt water reel that I've been catfishing with but it's too big. Would a 3000 size pontus and the 7'6" MH kastkat be sized appropriately? I dont want a broom handle rod and a micro reel and I dont want a tuna reel on an ultralight rod if you know what I mean.

    • @CattermanAdventures
      @CattermanAdventures Před 6 lety

      SogySeal hey brother! I'd highly recommend going with the KatTech in that regard(as it has a thinner diameter than the KastKat), with a 3000 or 4000 size baitfeeder. Our 3000 size baitfeeders can handle around 150-200 yards of 30lb braid. 🤘😎

    • @sogyseal7962
      @sogyseal7962 Před 6 lety

      So I wound up going with a Sharky 3 baitfeeder in the 4000 size just for the extra drag and put it on the B&M silvercat rod. The combination is sweet and the b&m rod is exactly what I was after. It's a cat rod but has enough action you could bass fish with it, it's also small and light in the hand. The sharky 3 is great too and I can use this setup for salt too.

    • @CattermanAdventures
      @CattermanAdventures Před 6 lety

      Hello Pricesoutdoors. The baitfeeder function is a separate drag mechanism on the reel. It allows you to set a clicker on a certain drag level with the flip up of the lever, and lets you re-engage the actual braking system with a turn of the reel. This way, you can set the baitfeeder setting to a low setting, let the fish take line while it clicks, and engage the reel to set the hook. This is a very versatile function which many catfishermen carp fishermen, and saltwater anglers use.
      Stay tuned for a detailed video on the baitfeeder function!

    • @CattermanAdventures
      @CattermanAdventures Před 6 lety

      Reggie Grimes Hello! For Flathead catfish I would recommend at least a 7'6" MH rod with a weight rating of 2-8 ounces. This is so you can cast big baits out. If you can get the longer model from shore you'd be even better off.
      From a kayak, I prefer a rod shorter than 7' so that fish can't high stick me. With a long butt, I'd go with a 6'6" rod, with a short butt I'd go for a 6' rod or shorter. From a kayak, any rod that can handle up to 3oz is fine. 😎🤙
