    The Ultramarines are considered one of the strongest and most honoured of all the Space Marine Chapters in the Imperium of Man, and were responsible for almost single-handedly holding the Imperium together after the Horus Heresy.
    Highly disciplined and courageous warriors, the Ultramarines have remained true to the teachings of their Primarch Roboute Guilliman for 10,000 standard years. The Ultramarines were originally the XIIIth Space Marine Legion before the reforms that initiated the Second Founding and reshaped the Imperium after the Heresy on the orders of Guilliman himself as the lord commander of the Imperium and Imperial Regent.

    I get now why everyone hates Guilliman. Because he's the only f***ing competent leader of all the primarchs.
    Guilliman: Ah, yes and what about supply lines?
    Everyone Else: F***ing nerd!
    Also Everyone Else: Dies from lack of supplies.

      Idk i love the ultramarines because they are like the only humanish space marine, they give hope and want to make the galaxy better, they dont have a genetic flaw, or some great brooding curse that makes them kill everyone around them, they aren't super hairy, they are just sane competent people in a world full of crazies ( that's not to say the nother arent competent ethier) doing their best to create a better world as their primarch wanted. Guilliman gets shit done and seems to make life better for the common man, and i love that he is a idealist that can make shit happen.

      Glad someone speaking truth. Seriously, space Augustus with space Roman legions is a cool template.
      As a guy who grinds his teeth at "charge waving chainsword" used as the height of tactical skill, a dude who learns, documents, and improves his forces, to say nothing of an entire freaking society, is awesome.

    my favorite guilliman moment is honestly just when him and his dad go on a hunting trip, and his dad gets hurt, and guilliman realizes that he's going to outlive his dad and just feels really sad, and his dad says its going to be alright. Its a little thing but its great.

      Love it. Little moments like that are great for character building.
      I've always imagined his dad being kind of a stern aloof hardass that are traditionally distant & demanding like my grandpa - asking his 7yo son to take a box of new bike parts to build his own bike, or take a block of steel and make his own axe at 11 yo. Capable of showing gentle love, but very difficult to talk to, man-to-man. Being Guilliman must have been cool since you can just DO stuffs perfectly and exceed his dad's requirements.

    To be fair to the Codex Astartes, the thing that the other Primarchs didn't like about it was the splitting of the Legions. The actual tactical knowledge contained within was all good. But the problem was after all the Primarchs disappeared, people religiously followed the Codex's tenants and left little to no room for deviation, treating it like a holy scripture. Also there is a beautiful quote from Lorgar, upon seeing the rage in Guilliman's eyes, where he realizes every wrong thing that happened to the Word Bearers wasn't something personal, and that Lorgar had mistakenly believed Guilliman hated him all this time. As he left secundus, he headed strait for caliban. To apologize to his legion, and to a hurt, berated, Luther. However eventually they landed on a world with strange creatures reminiscent of many earth native animals that seemed to defy logic, their density, elasticity and durability changes with no clear sense of reasoning behind it. They could fall hundreds of feet and break bones or they might fall into the core and crawl out without a scratch, even the way they fell wouldn’t always follow any set logic. they just like any other world challenges these strange creatures to games of basket ball taking various things when winning. Eventually becoming rulers of this world, the emperor was fascinated to see these strange creatures listed in the report.

    Fun thing about the Battle of Calth, most of the Ultramarines killed in the battle were killed by a Word Bearers ship ramming the orbital shipyards at 60% the speed of light, and then being shot at by Word Bearers ships without the chance to defend themselves over the next hour. As soon as the Ultramarines were given permission and orders to fight back it turned into a one-sided slaughter of Word Bearers forces. Even though the Ultramarines lost half their Legion and a huge number of ships, it was still their win. The Word Bearers also lost almost half their Legion, a huge number of mortal auxiliary forces, and failed to complete their main objective. The Ruinstorm was Plan B. It was a desperate stalling measure Erebus came up with in case their treachery failed (which it did). The fact that they failed to kill Roboute Guilliman made the attack on Calth a strategic failure, and the fact that they didn't even manage to cut the Ultramarines forces down to under Legion strength made it a tactical failure. The failure to make Calth's star explode cost the Word Bearers a huge amount of their fighting strength, and tied both themselves and the World Eaters down in Ultramar for far too long. What should have been a quick way to take the largest Loyalist Legion off the playing board wound up stalling two Traitor Legions in order to bring them down to average Legion size, and really pissing them off in the process.

    Ultramar is a Portuguese word actually (might also be present on other Latin languages, can't say), meant to refer to territories that belong to a country on the other side of the ocean/sea ("Mar" means sea in Portuguese, and ultra can mean extreme OR "what is beyond"), like colonies... naming it Ultramar makes sense actually, as it is basically an empire on itself, where Maccrage is the capital/metropolis and the other words are the "outer sea" territories... hell, gotta be honest, the name is actually pretty good to me, specially when you see other 40k names.

    the thing i love the most about Guilliman is his sense of humor, like hes very aware that by most measures hes a it of a stick in the mud, hes the bureaucrat, but he is often cracking little dad jokes to his Astartes sons to lighten the mood but they ultra respect him and take it very seriously so the joke goes over their heads, and he just sighs and gets back to business, but he always tries again. the one that comes first to my head is after the resurrection when he has to constantly wear the power armour and hes trying to write but he keeps breaking his writing utensils and he declares something to the effect of "pencils are my true greatest enemy" much to the confusion of the Ultramarines in the room

  • @DeathEatsCurry
    @DeathEatsCurry Před 3 lety +20

    Y'know, people always put Black Legion opposite to Ultramarines, but I'd argue the chaos mirror for Ultramarines are the Alpha Legion. Both are legion that favor the bigger picture view over individual battle tactics (logistics vs information warfare) and both excel at combined arms warfare without overspecializing anywhere. And while Robby is the most well documented Primarch, Alpharius is the least documented Primarch (and definitely the most dubiously documented).

    • @Eva-uw6uo
      @Eva-uw6uo Před rokem +4

      Plus their color schemes are really similar as well, and used to be moreso. Alpha Legion used to be silver and blue to my understanding before they switched to silver and iridescent blue-green. And silver is a somewhat neutral sort of hue compared to gold, which is considered a more 'warm' color, and silver itself can even be associated with cold despite not strictly being a 'cool' color. So the Alpha Legion's colors could be interpreted as a perversion (intentionally or otherwise cuz it's Alpha Legion and they'll never give you a straight or honest answer about anything) of the Ultramarines colors. And of course sometimes they also use gold, so if you just had a brief glance at them and didn't fully know what you were looking at you could easily mistake them for an Ultramarine.

    The funny thing abouth the Codex Astartes is that Guliman intended it to be a guid line. Like a handbook that you pull out when you don't know what to do. NOT as a set of rules that needed to be followed. But somehow just like with big E the rest of the galaxy didn't get the memo.
