Jaghatai Khan (pronounced Jagg-a-tie KAAN), also known as "The Great Khan," "the Khagan" and the "Warhawk," was the primarch of the V Legion of Space Marines, the White Scars, who led them through the years of the Great Crusade and the Horus Heresy.
Jaghatai fought alongside his White Scars for another 70 standard years following the end of the Heresy, eventually disappearing in 084.M31 into a region of space known as the Maelstrom, a large Warp rift in the Ultima Segmentum that is a smaller counterpart of the Eye of Terror.

I have this idea that the saddest day in Jaghatai's life was when he grew too big and heavy to ride the horses in Chogoris and since then, no vehicles he ever rode, no matter how fast he drove them, gave him the same feeling he felt when he rode a horse on the wide open plains of his homeworld.

Sanguinius shut his eyes. Like that, he appeared drawn and tired, a funerary monument to himself. Dorn supressed a shudder.
‘My sight is not so clear as father’s’, said Sanguinius. ‘The Future is ever in flux. Only some events…’ He paused, finding the words hard to say. ‘Only some events are certain.’
‘Do you see me? What will be the consequences of inaction?’
‘I see fire, and blood, and a world laid waste if you do not act.’
‘If I act?’ said the Khan.
Sanguinius opened his eyes to look at him.
‘There is a grave risk to you. A confrontation unlooked for, and if you survive, a flight from one danger into greater peril.’

    What's also cool:
When jaghatai was first brought to terra they flew him past the moon where his flagship was being built
And he looked at it and went "not fast enough" and he basically had them rip out several of their warp engines, (because who needs speed in the warp) so that there was more room for realspace engines
Mind you: this was RIGHT after they plucked him of his planet, all his friends where still just fully regular dudes who've only ever rode HORSES
And he looks at the official that was with them, some big diplomat or whatever, and he basically said "don't think that just because I'm new to all of this, I will blindly accept whatever you put in front of me, if I am truly so important to you, I want things done MY way"
    Which is just...

So he had his initial contact, then some time in his home system (I believe), and then the warp travel time from his homeworld to the sol system.
Being a primarch he can process information absurdly quick, and being the Khan, I think he just mostly focused his studies on going fast, because ofcourse
And then he sees this half-open space ship halfway through being built, looks at it, and says "nah, you're putting the focus on the wrong parts, I want the engines to be bigger"
I don't think he actually knew what speed it could get to down to the miles per hour or anything, but just seeing that it's not all about goin' fast was enough for him to draw his conclusion of it needing to be different to suit his needs

When the Heresy started, Horus had to make a lot of plans to cripple the strongest Legions to ensure his success: Ultramarines and both Angels were caught in Ruinstorm, Thousand Sons were broken by treachery and Salamanders, Iron Hands and Raven Guard were decimated at Istvaan. However, Fists remained in Sol system and beyond his reach, Wolves remained a menace and White Scars were not an immediate threat and would likely join them. The last one was a horrible oversight, which caused the Traitors hideous casualties with their hit-and-run tactics. Khan was running circles around the enemy Legions and managed to reach Terra before the big siege.
Also, the Scars DID have a large number of Horus-leaning Astartes, but Khan managed to turn most of them back. These repentees became the Ebon Keshig, a black-clad suicide squad which would earn their honour back through death.

My favourite part of the Scars book is when they're up against the Alpha Legion fleet (which is made up of a bunch of big cargo ships refitted to look like battleships) and the Khan decides to take over the movement of the fleet. They start floating around in seemingly random formations as if they lost all coordination which confuses the alpha legion. All the while, there's the narrator explaining how the Khan never adorned his fleet with fancy shit like fulgrim or made changes like ferrus manus would but instead the one change he made was to fucking nitro charge all the ship's engines to make them hyper-fast. Then the white scars ships come out of this random formation to all perfectly face forward and hit the go button, blasting past the alpha legion with ease.

Some corrections. First, while both Dorn and Guilliman were initially against Jaghatai Khan being immediately placed in charge of the V legion, Guilliman later specifically states that he "admires the Khan greatly."
Second, Jaghatai Khan's was closest to Magnus and Horus. In fact, after Horus was named Warmaster at the Triumph of Ullanor, he told the Khan that he would have need of Jaghatai and his legion, to which the Khan said "You call, I answer."
Third, the Khan and White Scars were pursuing the remnants of the orks from the Ullanor Campaign.
Fourth, the White Scars had lodges, much like the Luna Wolves, Death Guard, and Emperor's Children. Also, these lodges favored allying with the Warmaster during the Horus Heresy. However, Jaghatai put an end to it (after his fight with Mortarion).
Fifth, after Jaghatai and White Scars pledged to serve the Emperor, it still took his legion another four years to make it back to Terra. He did it by using an ancient device called the Dark Glass to travel to Terra via the Webway.
Sixth, the White Scars are tactically sound. They don't simply charge into battles. They use their speed to surprise or outmaneuver their opponents. In their fight with the Alpha Legion, they pretended to scatter half heartedly to get the Alpha Legion into place and then used their speed to get around the Alpha Legion and take them out.

Interesting edition to the 5th point, the white scars were entirely alone during those 4 years. Ultramarines and the two angels legions were on ultramar, the wolves and imperial fists were on terra. And the salamanders, Raven Guard and iron hands has been shattered and reduced to Guerilla fighting forces.
Jagahtai and the white scars were the only significant force standing between Horus and Terra during that time. 4 legions were sent after them, including an entire 3rd of the Emperors children. It was only at the end when Horus couldn’t delay any longer that the entire death guard under Mortarion was deployed to hunt them.
And they still got away to terra anyway.
When bricky says that the white scars were arguably the most important legion in the heresy. He’s not wrong.

I also find it amusing that the Dark Angels had a 10,000 year panic attack when just some of their members went traitor because they were following orders from Luther that they thought were legit (sure Caliban broke and lots of the Fallen are still around, but details), whereas a solid half of the White Scars wanted to actively join Horus in his rebellion, but the Scars just don't give a shit.

So Arch recently covered the Scars novel in the Horus Heresy, and he brings up an interesting point that EVERYONE seems to forget that Jaghatai and the White Scars exist when they're not around, and Magnus brings up the notion that Jaghatai is actually a talented psyker, but the Khan dismisses him. Magnus is under the impression that Jaghatai is just trying to be slick by hiding his powers, but Jaghatai acts as if the concept has never really occurred to him that he might be psychically gifted, even though there is such a prolific psyker presence in the White Scars in the form of the Storm Seers, and Jaghatai himself both pushed forward the creation of the Librarius and had his Legion disregard the Edict of Nicea, blatantly disregarding an order from the Emperor that even Magnus and the Thousand Sons hesitated to disobey.
So the theory goes that Jaghatai Khan is actually a psyker with the natural ability to make people forget he exists when not in his presence, similar to Corax and his Wraith Slip allowing him to turn invisible by blocking the perception others have of his existence; Corvus can't be seen, but Jaghatai can't be remembered. Which fits because both have a heavy association with birds; Corvus and ravens, and Jaghatai and hawks. The theory also goes that Jaghatai isn't aware that he has this power and just assumes people keep forgetting about him, which is why he is bothered by Magnus insinuating he's actually a powerful psyker, and this ability has been passed on to his Legion to a certain extent, hence why the White Scars have a long history of success, and yet they are rarely ever acknowledged to even exist, let alone be derided by their contemporaries for being 'dishonorable savages'.

It is nothing as explicit as "forgetting ". It is more like an anti-memetic effect that causes people to subconsciously dismiss him and his legion as "relevant", a "threat", or "important"; cognitive camouflage would be a good term for it. It doesn't actually make people forget them, surely, if you ask people to recall it they do so immediately and if you ask them to list all 20 legions and their primarchs they would also do that without fault...Though Jaghathai would no doubt be the final name put on the list by practically anyone you'd ask. You can remember them. You just can't find any reason to until they burst from their ambush positions from the planet you knew had a white scars on them.
It is possible that this eventually also backfired tho; with Commoragh not recognizing the value in leaving the world of the Khan well the fuck alone and prevent his entire legion from trying to kick their shit in, before the Khan entered their city becoming a massive threat that *nobody ever bothers to report to the higher ups because they don't see any reason to*

Horus has a similar musing where he talks about how he is surrounded by the worst the galaxy has to offer despite the nobility of his cause, because only his outcast brothers would ever work with him to depose the Emperor.
Hell, Perturabo also has a moment where he talks about how the Emperor made him undertake the most thankless tasks and subject his sons to constant wars of attrition, never once considering that the Emperor gave him virtually limitless freedom and it was his own narrow-minded callousness that caused the grinding down and ignominy of his Legion.

I think that the Khan is meant to represent that untamable part of the human spirit that yearns for freedom and personal fulfillment

Palatine was a high ranking court official in Rome and it's successors. Basically a governor or regent. The Electorate of the Palatinate was a country within the HRE whose rulers (the Counts Palatine) were prince-electors of the HRE.
So, all in all, GW actually got one vaguely right.

something i feel needs to be mentioned about the khan is that he is the only guy in 40k that have made orks run away in fear. so when he was fighting the orks one of his close spacemarines died. this put the khan into a rage and he began moving so fast and killing orks so fast that they ran awey in true fear of him.
also something i also wanna mention is the greatest burn in the galaxy. Fulgrim was taunting the khan and said "i heard you do strange things to your ships" to witch the khan replied. "I heard you do strange things to you sons"

39:35 Answer; not really actually. In 1st Edition, the Whitescars (before it was White Scars) filled the role that the Ultramarines now fill. They were the original Space Marine Chapter in 1st Edition lore, and as such were the template for every other Space Marine Chapter since them.

Im curious about your take on Ferrus and Iron Hand but Im afraid it would be only memes without the tale of him being probably one of the most tragic case of all the primarchs, the story about his ideals and how he lost himself upon being betreyed by his most beloved friend and brother and I dont know if i want to see this.
