  • I install a new "aftermarket" Traction Lock differential into a Ford 8" rear center section. The open differential had to go as we don't want any more one wheel peel.
There are a few things to note if you are planning this upgrade yourself as it was not a direct drop-in like I expected it to be. There are three main differences between this aftermarket unit and using an original Ford traction lock differential.
    - You will need new 9" carrier bearings for the differential.
    - You will need to clearance the pinion support area as this diff is a bit larger than the factory one.
    - And I forgot to mention; you will need longer ring gear bolts as the originals are too short for proper engagement due to the thicker mounting flange for the ring gear.
At the end of the day it's not too difficult, but you may need some special tools to make it happen. At least you will know the process.

Internet is full of stories of shops that can't get that assembly done correctly. Props man.

I had no idea. I just made it work with the parts on hand.

Nice. I need to do this to a Mercedes diff. I have been having the same thing happen lately. Wear bearings are supposed to fit but are slightly different. Aftermarket qaulity continues to go down.

I’m in England. I’ll be back in the states in a few years. This place gets on my nerves almost every day.

How it holding up? I was told you need to open the unit and soak the clutch plates in friction modifier?

He is driving it now and leaving two black lines. It didn't need any disassembly. He installed it using some Royal Purple gear oil as it says it's suitable for limited slip differentials. It is a little groany when warm and turning in a parking lot. He is seeing if it quiets down after more break-in before adding any friction modifier to it. It's not annoying or anything. Just not 100% silent.
