Fox's Abroad
United States
Registrace 2. 03. 2022
Yes, there is Foxbody Mustang ownership outside of the USA. We are located in the UK (eg. United Kingdom, England or Great Britain). We regularly get together to help each other work on our cars and participate in various car events. It is quite a different experience being an American, living/working abroad in the UK and owning one of these cars here. Join me for the tech, the friendship, and the foxbody ownership experience of living in England and dealing with the issues this part of the world has to offer. We are not sponsored. We are not trying to get sponsored. We don't go out of our way to purposely do projects for the likes and clicks. We just think what we do is interesting and vaguely entertaining enough that we wish to share and maybe make some new friends along the way.
Pete's Old School Ford 402ci Windsor Stroker Build With Vintage and Modern Parts
We kick off Petes long awaited 402ci Windsor stroker engine build in this episode. With high end vintage parts like an original Ford Motorsports G351 4-bolt main engine block. To the Trick Flow 206cc R heads, As well as using modern internals like Forged Liberty Crank, Molnar Rods, Diamond pistons, a custom camshaft, and a lot of other high end parts to round out this engine.
No skimping out on anything here. We get through the shortblock assembly on this episode. Sounds easy, but it's not without the normal problems we experience here in the UK when working on our American Foxbodies.

In this video I start assembling the bottom end of John's, World Products Man-O-War engine block. For the spec mongers out there it is a 9.2" deck height block that is the same as a 351 Cleveland. The crank is a 4340 Eagle with a 4" stroke. The rods are 6.00" Eagle H-Beam units. The bore is 4.020" which puts it at 406 cubic inches. The pistons are from Ross Racing and they have a -31cc dish. I volunteered to help my buddy with sprucing up the head on his 1978 2.3L Cobra II Mustang. It had a few issues that we will go over and I see if some basic port work will be worth the effort on this extremely stock engine. If you would like me to go into any more detail or down a particular rabbit hole with this project please leave a like and comment and I'll see what I can do.

nice engine .....🤤🤤
Wow you know all these years I never knew how much material is in the bore spacing and the deck is beautiful. Seems like this motor was built for boost and hp.
great video, one question i have a 90 f150 and i did swap to manual trans, what do i need to do to the ecu? Thanks, louis
Just Awesome!
That is one impressive block. fe too. Nice. You said Clevor, so what heads are you planning to use? Regards.
Wow it's going to look killer.
Another great video mike. I'm looking forward to seeing this progress further.
Hey dude do have the specs for the head am also putting my engine back together had the head ported I might put some arp studs but I still using the stock bolts because arp studs have come in mail yet
How do you properly remove the coating on the J-port? I had to replace my old ECU and the replacement never had a chip installed so the port still has that coating. Also do I need to clean the contacts on the top and bottom? I don't want to damage it.
That coating on the pins is a thick lithium grease. I’ve seen on one occasion where the grease itself was causing an issue. Use a few q-tips and some brake cleaner to clean it off. Wet the q-tips and don’t spray directly on or into the EEC. Yes you need to clean both sides.
What tires you got in the rear? Looks like nitto nt555 g2?
Nitro 555 G2. 275/40-17’s. Just a street tire. Not a drag radials or anything really sticky.
I hope those rear fenders were flared the same from the factory if you were plumb bobing off of them to set rear center. Nice job.
It’s more so the tires don’t rub. English roads are very bumpy.
nice .........lots of powa 😅😅
What? No mention of my heads coming in shortly and the 406? That's fine, Pete can have his moment. Are you going to paint the family truckster metallic pea? If you know, you know. #nationallampoons

nice looks very good ... some blow by ? Water? I had that once with my new 331 ... I dont now from where it made its way into the engine.. but it was water and steam was pushed out from Valve cover Breather and I also had to refill the Radiator from time to time ...once I changed the Heads it was gone ...
Any fresh motor will have some blowy until the rings break in. I need to get some miles on it first, but it's England. Been raining nearly every day for two weeks.
very informative, thank you! I wonder what you think of replacing the electrolytic caps with polymer? They are supposed to last far longer than electrolytic but may have some extra complications in ordering the right ones because they act slightly different than the electrolytic ones so maybe it isn't as simple as just matching the voltage and uF ratings. Any thoughts? 🙂
There has to be a reason. Thinking they cant make polymer caps in the large values required. I'm not an electrical engineer so I can't say.
❤😂😢😮😅😊😊😊😊😊😊 what do you think the horsepower will be? It’ll be nice. I can’t wait to see it in the car or Mustang or the Teebird whatever which one you do.
❤😂😂😢😢😮😅😅😅😊😊😊😊😊😊 that turbo 2300 is gonna rip. I can’t wait to see that sucker in whatever he’s gonna put it in a tea Bird or a fox Barney. I think it’s gonna be fast and it’s gonna kick ass and take names Chevy and Dodge and spit out on the tailpipe.
As always very nice
What idle air controller are you running?
Fiesta Style. I have an early video on installing them on a Terminator X system for a foxbody.
12:07 agreed. I've used Ford Ultra Grey from a caulk tube. I'm a Senior Master technician and that's the best sealant I've ever used from a manufacturer. The anaerobic gasket maker is to be used when mating machined surfaces. It works great like that, but when a unit has see multiple rebuilds and/or 3M roloc discs, the gap to seal is too wide.
Hey bud, nice tidy work. You've done this before. If you ever read this, I'm curious about something. What rpm are you shifting this when you're full tilt? I'll watch some of your other videos about this transmission to get familiar with your build. This is a good video. I've worked on my 3550 for 24 years. Keep it up.
I'm not a "racer" so I'm not banging gears with my right foot never leaving the floor. I have three of these older 3550/TKOs in different vehicles. They are robust but not speed shifters. I even have one with the carbon fiber blocker rings on 2nd and 3rd and I didn't note any better shifting vs the standard brass ones. I would try and shift at 6k at the track but I'm not there enough to be consistent. They do need to be warm or they like to grind 2nd.
@@Mike-FoxsAbroad have you tried refacing the cone contact area of the gear? Whether brass or carbon fiber, the smooth surface that they contact on the gear becomes polished after miles and years of use. Taking 400 grit paper to it and removing the polish will give the cone something to bite and speed up or slow down the gear better. You shouldn't have any gear clash regardless of temp. I've daily driven my upgraded 3550 in my 93 Cobra since '99. I'm to the point of face plating or switching to a TKX. I need higher rpm shift capability. My engines make power upward of 7k these days.
@@Mike-FoxsAbroad whoa....Reef Blue coupe?
@@arturozarate1752 I use red scotchbrite to knock down the burnished clutching cone area, or the gear is usually brand new. Faceplating is aggressive. Racing is racing but faceplated, these never seem to last very long. I've seen them blown up quite a lot. If I was going to race stickshift I would build a T56. My TKX is pretty sweet but I'm not sure where the limits are with it. My new 363 is going to definitely be testing those limits this summer.
@@arturozarate1752 Bimini blue.
Hope the part situation comes around for you and others in need. Both of my WC T5's are in good nick for now, best.

I have a 7qt pan and put 8 quarts in it right on the money on the dip stick. 347 stroker 7qt Moroso pan
Take in account for 1 quart in the oil filter
Yep also some cars have oil coolers that you also drain from like for instance the hellcat. Which between oil filter and that it makes the difference. Oil doesn’t just sit in the oil pan.
Yeah, those FL1A filters were huge by today's standards.
What are your EGTs on that thing?? I’m running a 351W turbo bronco and I’m seeing 8-900 at idle on E85 pre turbo.
I have no idea. E85 is not available in the UK and I don't have a pyrometer in the exhaust.
With all shims & the valve spring removed on my 2.3 and with the retainer & keepers reinstalled, I only measure 1.500" total height from the bottom of the retainer to the spring pocket. Another video on a 2.3T valve spring replacement got just 1.500" as well for the maximum possible spring height. You show your old springs having nearly 1.600" installed height and the beehives at over 1.500". How can this be?
Because the original retainer/keeper combo was that much different.
@@Mike-FoxsAbroadThat makes sense. BTW, I also have a Turbocoupe powered fox Mustang with the Boport beehives & 1.5 cam set up by a machine shop. Runs awesome. Really enjoy your videos and appreciate your enthusiasm for the 2.3.
FOXLIVESMATTER
I thoroughly enjoy your videos man the car looks wonderful
man thats a nice set up
goes between trans mount and trans so it lifts the Trans and changes the pinion angle too...right ? and what happens when Joint brakes in the Back ..what they mostly do ?....just asking ..
It does nothing for pinion angle. If you can measure the angle change after installing 1/4" at the trans mount then you have very sensitive angle finders. If the rear joint breaks nothing catastrophic happens, so it's a non safety issue.
@@Mike-FoxsAbroad ok ..... but its still heavy and bouncing up and down in there ..and costs a 150 $ plus shipping .. you can buy real safty loops for under 30$ ......
You dont have to mess with seat bolts and it seems its easy to install, if it passes NHRA, ITS REAL. @Diondo26
Seen it, bought it, just waiting for it to turn up as it’s currently on back order and only 30 mins to fit it 😁
I’m surprised you didn’t nick mine with the oil pan.
Hi is it for sale
The valley will actually split on a 302 as well.
I have to ask....is 500hp naturally aspirated less violent than 500hp boosted? is timing and mixture more forgiving NA? Do you think your cylinder wear was as measured before or after it was boosted? I dont know man....that is CERTAINLY interesting.
I'm not one to science that out. 500hp is 500hp but boosted engines usually make more torque. Especially turbo cars. Cyl wear... I'll never know. The tops of the pistons wore so much after the rods bent that I cant say how much accelerated wear happened. I know that when I built it there was no perceivable ridge. Now I can feel a little one with my finger.
Harmonics and pre-detonation kills these blocks. I’ve been pushing 600hp on a 302 with forged internals and a main girdle for yrs.
damm.. that luck I have with my 495hp s....😅😅
Looks like you didn’t have enough gap in your rings got too hot
They had plenty of gap. When the rods bent it hung the rings out one side of the piston so much that they got blasted with all the heat and pressure.
David vizard suggests it's the harmonics and vibration that kill the mains. That's why a main cap stud girdle can make a huge difference to longevity of a stock block.
That guy talks a lot but it's frustrating watching his videos. Especially when he goes off topic so often and never really answers his clickbait questions. He only gives out pieces of information and I'm not sure if it's factual or theoretical. He is a journalist and wants people to pay him for info. I unsubscribed from him a few years ago. I did have a nice 50oz Fluidamper harmonic balancer and an aluminum flywheel on this 302. Harmonics would have been as good as they could be with stock crank, rods and pistons. If you watch our other video czcams.com/video/dXuKXYFE0qQ/video.html it shows that a girdle will not keep the block from cracking. It only keeps the parts from scattering.
He is far far from just a journalist. He’s closer to an internal combustion scientist. He had brain surgery so his speech is slow, but he has probably taught more people the science of porting heads than anyone in the country
@@Mike-FoxsAbroad I agree on all counts, but I think he's got a lot of knowledge. You just need the patience to listen
@@geniferteal4178 He tells no real secrets. Just practical knowledge and tries to get people to buy his software and sign up for seminars. I'm not saying he doesn't have any good knowledge, but he is very reserved in what he talks about in his videos. What people say and how they say it just is not received the same way for all people. He is just not my cup of tea.
@@Mike-FoxsAbroad I understand. He is a tough listen.
Boost ? The 2.3 Volvo red blocks will bend the rods when the boost is high, and the rpm is low. My freind works at a highly reputable tuning shop in Michigan, his experience is some of the late 60's 302 blocks with "Hecho en Mexico" are the strongest, but are sketchy at the 600 mark. A main girdle helps.
Boost was around 12psi. I got into the 10's and that was enough for me with this combo. Especially with it smoking a bit and #7 having low compression.
@@Mike-FoxsAbroad Thanks for the reply. My '80 Capri hasn't seen the light of day since '99. I have a 2001 Explorer 5.0 / 4R70W sitting on the garage floor. But I also have a Gen 4 LH6 5.3, that I got free, and frankly, I can't see putting a 230 hp iron lump, where a 400 hp aluminum one will fit perfectly. I don't believe in brand loyalty. Sorry if you hate it.
