I lived here when it was First Army HQ, 1960-62. I saw Eleanor Roosevelt who spoke at the Officer's Club. Great place to live.
Did you know anyone from the Quartermaster’s office? My aunt was the secretary for the QM.
@@richm7410 Sorry, no. My dad, a Warrant Officer, worked at the MRU/Machine Records Unit (the old punch-card computers), and I was an Army Brat. I'm now a retired Chaplain.
@@bobleroe3859 Thanks for responding. It’s too bad, it would have made a great small world story. Thank you and your Dad for your service. 🇺🇸
Its a great day when Tom posts a video!
It's such a nice escape from the city in the summer. Pack a lunch, a blanket to lay on and take a little day trip adventure.
Life long New Yorker always knew about this island but never have been here, but that may change, thank you for this friend!
love me some tomdnyc. new videos are a instant watch from me.
Another informative NYC video. Your fun style keeps people interested in the history.
"do the Lord's work" haha these videos never disappoint
He's "on a mission from God" - and I support him.
They host jazz fest here every summer, everyone dresses up in the old garb and jazz bands play and everyone has a huge picnic and dances and drinks. It’s amazing
Love the video. My late aunt, Mary Sullivan, worked for the Army during WWII and until the Army left in 1966. She loved working on the island. She was the secretary to the Quartermaster. Thanks for the video. Have to visit someday.
Governor's Island is also a zero-waste island - all the businesses must compost and have compostable serviceware! The composting is done at Earth Matter, the awesome urban farm on the island with over 70 hens (and sometimes goats)! Thanks for the great video, Tom - what a NYC gem!
Ive visited many times! It's a nice little oasis right now. Fun to climb the hills and very interesting art exhibits and beautiful views!
Love the quiet and unimpressed way Eric says “so excited about d-day”. Lol!!
Best video I've seen in my life! No one is better than Tom!
Tell Tom we’ve almost hit 70K subscribers and he still has yet to come up with a name for the fandom.
@@gerardorocha247 aren't we The Sick Plugged People?
We need you to come back behind the camera
I lived and worked on Governor's Island for 7 years! I watched the Reagan-Gorbachev summit from my office. The Statue of Liberty was a portrait from my living room window in our apartment. I used to take my sons to the Burger King. It was a really special place to live.
I love GI for when I want a quiet, uncrowded break from the boroughs :)
love the epic fact alert and sick plugs
thank you and eric for all your hard work showing all this cool stuff. I would love to live on that island in those old houses..."now he would be like omg nvm lol" - these vids are so funny I love it
Now I gotta visit this place. Thanks for the video.
Lived here for most of my childhood, you did a great job, thanks
Your peek out behind the 3 trees bit was funny. We giggled. Me and my toddler.
Nice. Toddlers are my target demo!
Born and raised here in New York all 46 years of my life never been to Governors Island. The funny thing was I was thinking about going the other day?😂
Bunch of new information for me, as always! Thank you for that, Tom!
So much info in a wrapped in an engaging, brilliant video. Thank you, Tom. Can’t wait for tonight’s stream!
Good information. Great tour.
Thanks for another informative and funny video!
18:08 Tommy D, with the wicked jump shot….OMG
when i use to live in staten island i would take the ferry and see this place all the time nd there use to be 2 big ass abandoned apartment buildings i always wanted to go into them since i was into urbex at the time, i guess u could say. i moved back to ny a few months ago and sad to see they're now gone. i always thought access to this place was restricted but now seems to be a tourtist destination...
Pretty cool video as always!
Thanx for the informative video!
I'm glad they opened it back up.
always a great day when you make a new vid:)
Thanks, and hi from VT
Your historical knowledges are amazing, Thanks for all these informations, great 👍😀
Love this! Never knew about the tunnel. Very cool 😎
20:00 Last time I was on Governor's Island a year or two ago most of the air traffic was military, not corporate choppers.
Tom, can you add a pay or reward to your CZcams display. I would like to send you a few bucks to keep this channel going. You have a great sense of humor and provide a very good narration of the places you vlog. Thanks
Excellent video !!!😊😊😊❤❤❤
Omg as an aviation enthusiast you left out at one time there was a runway for smaller aircraft’s to land right down the middle of that island. There’s old photos showing it.
I lived there from ‘91 until the Coast Guard left in ‘96. It was great.
Hey, me too, lol
Have family history on Governors Island, as my late Grandfather was in the coast guard while they worked on the island and my mother lived there briefly as a child while it housed the coast guard and families. My grandfather loved American history and it's always been an interesting place for me to explore when I visit NY from Florida (Go BUCS!) so it was exciting to see a video from you about such a cool little island.
when you were hopping the bike racks the look on your face in the end lmao
Did you ever do van cortdland park riverdale section of the Bronx?
Tom, you have a CZcams channel that is impressive and most excellent.
It's actually that John Jay was cancelled to call it Fort Columbus, then John Jay was ok again and they changed it back. Columbus hadn't been cancelled quite yet. That would take almost 100 years.
Thanks again John in Chicago
History with humor!!
Awesome beanie Tom 🤘🤘
If I would’ve had you for my history teacher I would’ve paid attention!!!
Epic Fact Aler 🎉
Tom you’re hilarious I love it😂
Lmao! That beginning! Too funny!
Hey Tom and Eric! What's up?Wow!Really into Governor's island !
When u went down ferry stairs i kept eye contact with you
AWKWARRRD lol
Only Tom Delgado would have a walking tour and have him in the thumbnail sitting :)
yay u finally made video on gov island. i told u to do it like 4 months ago
Went last summer. We rented a four seater bike and toured the island. It was an awesome day😎
Lived there from '60 to '64. Lived in Ft Jay. Dad was Exec Officer at the Hospital. I remember PS 26 Man. What a great place to grow up....
i went to Governours Island back in 2019 and it was nice to visit once. If I had a bike I might have enjoyed my visit much more.
Despite the bit of rambling at the beginning, really loved this. Great humour and funny odd clips throughout, you would make a cracking tour guide fella.
There's a game called Freedom Fighters which is one of my favourites of all time, and it takes place in an alternate timeline where Russians invade New York, and features mostly Manhattan and Brooklyn, but the later levels are set on a snowy atmospheric Governor's Island, and I had no idea that Fort Jay really existed. Wow 😳😯
Also about that game, that big cylindrical structure that has all the fans for the tunnel at 11:37 looks like the big building where you sneak onto the island the first time, through the underground vent shaft. 12:12 Tommy Lee Jones 🤣
Wicked that is, brill video 🙂😉
good to find this channel since i have a plan to move to NYC from jakarta, love all the vids.... thank you panji!
Cool. Based on your profile pic, you might like this older video I did: czcams.com/video/fS8tMzs7l-I/video.html
@@tomdnyc1 ah thanks man will check it out!
I've been to NYC a couple of times. One of the things I hated the most about Lower Manhattan are these ******* HELICOPTERS flying over all day.
Some people live next to or close to elevated trains running all day and night. I used to live down the block from a firehouse. It becomes second nature eventually.
nice!
I went to Governor's Island many years ago (2010-ish). Nice hat.
Love the New Zealand beanie.
My friends’ son also goes to Harbor HS
****************** nice visit ****
The governors house looks like it hasn’t been painted since the early 1700s.
The Nut Island part really cracked me up. I don't know if it's a Florida thing or not, but it's hilarious. I think they should develop on Governors Island but with taste. Not take over all the Island but have some development and preserve the parks and open spaces
clinton hill walking tour PLZ!
I’m glad to see they’re letting people besides military in. We used to be the only ones. I had a dream about the whole pre-Mayflower Dutch settlements. Actually, a lot. 😢
At least you didn't go to Staten Island!
brother tom...
Everything you need to know...I grew up here. There is much to be said about the things that aren't written.
Comment for the algorithm
Your silly tom . keep it up .
Cool, basketball 🏀 yes that was moi
Thanks for continuing to include the Native American history too
8:57 *Rats*
Durty fifthy rats ... book Tom is reading, Manhattan in the shape of a rodent on cover
Perhaps an upcoming tour
Can "Looking for Jimmy in da Meadowlands" (with author Robert Sullivan) be too far behind :)
At least with the spring thaw in a few months count the emerging floaters in Wallabout Bay, Brooklyn.
What's ya'l say Tom ?
Floaters
Anyway, thanks for the tour
Potentially a very stupid question, but is this part of a borough? I know it’s obviously an island, I just assumed that everything part of New York City was affiliated with one of the five.
Manhattan
Or, historically Manhattan Island is part of Governors Island since Governors Island was settled first followed by Manhattan.
Legally, whelter it's administered by the municipality of Manhattan, NYC, New York State or, Federal Government is a question for Tom. Believe he mentioned it was trusted to the Dutch New Amsterdam/Netherlands. The developers will have their opinion on this.
There is a proposed extension of manhattan (reclaiming land I guess) which will incorporate Governors Island. In 10 years it may be all skyscrapers offices and apartments.
It's NEVER going to happen!
@@johnscanlan9335 yea, I can't see it
Omg that sounds terrible!
Glad that you mentioned the Harbor School. I think they are involved in the project to plant a billion oysters in New York Bay!
Wet Willie! Hablah ha! You're adorable! Love ya baby! ♥
Would be nice if you would have focused on GI vs. plugging your other videos...
looks like a lot of room for a tent city..
😎🥰🌟😻🌡️🌡️🌡️🧭🛩️🗽🏕️⛺🏕️🔭wonderful
I'm here for vegan eric
Legend has it the British formally took control of New Amsterdam when they said “ ‘ello guv’na!” while punching the Dutch in the nuts.
😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀
I JUST POSTED A VIDEO TO SHOW WHAT PEOPLE REALLY NEED TO KNOW ABOUT GOVERNORS ISLAND....EVERYONE SHOULD SEE IT...PLACE ISNT WHAT YOU THINK.
I have a feeling that money, like most times, will win and turn the island into a lifeless, soulless zombie, with apartments and investment possibilities for wealthy people.
Solid work, Tom, as well as Eric, beautiful images, taken while still possible.
Yeah but fingers crossed it won't...!
Columbus was canceled 😂😂😂
they should make governors island straight up low income only and have a cap on how much a person can make
Good way to ruin it. No thanks.
😮WTF❤
It's a great place that will no doubt be ruined eventually
They should develop Rikers Island instead.
Some good information but she's awfully passive aggressive about progressive motivation.
POINTLESS TOM
Drop the attempt to be funny and just present the information.
