I'm an idiot. I have no idea why I said Wrexham is an English football club. I know they're in Wales. Thanks for those who pointed out my false statement there!
Yeah I for some reason had a total brain fart on that my bad. 😅😅😅
They are in the English football pyramid though like other welsh clubs cardiff, Swansea and Newport
Ha, it struck me as odd, but I thought maybe it was a League One or League Two team I wasn’t familiar with.
Good luck on Friday when you play the real blues
I was just about to say this lol
As a European who is a big fan of your channel, and a massive football fan, especially the premier league. This was a match made in heaven.
Keep up the good work.
same
"Match made in heaven" I see what you did there
Minor correction - West Ham weren't originally known as Thomas Ironworks. They were known as Thames Ironworks Football Club, named after the Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company that they worked for (based on the River Thames, in the hamlet of West Ham before it got incorporated into London). Interesting sidenote, Thames Ironworks was the company that built HMS Warrior, the first fully ironclad warship.
Also “The Irons” is probably the “popular” nickname amongst the fans (certainly the regular attendees where you hear the chant “common you Irons” not “common you hammers”) whilst “the Hammers” is the more commonly used generally.
@@grahambrown3519 it’s strange actually. I’m a fan myself, and the best way to describe it is that the team and the club are “the Irons” but that the fans are “the Hammers”. Of course you can chop and change things about, but I’d say that “I’m a Hammer, I support the Irons.” It feels weird to call the fans, “the Irons”. And you’re right: Irons are much preferred over Hammers (or ‘“Ammers”, if you want!”
Been going since the 60’s and a season ticket since the 80’s. As a kid growing up in Kent I always knew them as “the Hammers”. It was only when I started going regularly that I heard “the Irons”. That is the prevalent one in the ground by the fans, talk to any “outsider” though and it is “the Hammers” refer to “Irons” and I suspect many might think you a Scunthorpe fan😊.
Not exactly a sidenote, the shape of the shield of west hams crest is literally a cross section of the hull of HMS Warrior. They were always on the nose about that.
I miss the Castle on our badge. COYI
Nottingham Forest stadium is like 300 yards from Notts County ground (the oldest football club in the world). Maybe less
I generally suggest to include more cultural history in your channel. History is not just the history of wars and conflicts. It is also the history of science, culture, ideas and everyday things.
Agree
He did a CGP Grey about the history of the name Tiffany
How many subscribers do you have?
@@SimonBellaMondo I don't have a channel.
military history is the most interesting though
Great video as always,
Just wanted to comment that Leicester were not only not expected to win the league, but were actually considered relegation candidates, only avoiding it the previous season thanks to a ridiculous win streak. One of the biggest football shocks that I have ever seen.
Solid work! Keep going
They were 10,000-1 with the bookies before the start of that season. I'm a Liverpool fan, and they won the Prem before we did!
@@iammattc1 5000-1, wasn't it? That's what I remember seeing at the bookies.
The reason Football teams have, and indeed are required to have alternative jerseys with different colours is to avoid the confusion when 2 teams just so happen to have similar looking colours. makes it easier for the audience, cameras, commentators, the players themselves, to follow the action.
Or, in the case of Man U, rampant capitalism.
More specifically, it was also to help distinguish teams when they appeared on TV back in the early days of the 1950's and 60's, as most people back then only only black and white TVs.
A televised match between say, Man United (in red) vs Chelsea (in blue) would be almost impossible to know which team was which, because red and blue both just look 'dark' on a black and white TV, so one team would need to play in a 'light' colour (like white) to make it obvious who was who.
Colour TV didn't become widespread till the late 60's, early 70's, but by then the tradition of having two kits had become normalized.
Side-note - I think I'm correct in saying that the 1966 World Cup final between England and Germany was the first match in England to be broadcast in colour
It so funny for me, as a Brazilian to see someone having to explain the concept of promotion and relegation. When I first started to watch American football I was so confused how the worst teams are basically rewarded with better draft picks instead of relegated.
I'm a Manchester United guy and we're on the way up! As long as I don't see you in a Liverpool t-shirt you've still got a member, Chris 🤣
My sons are Manchester United all the way.
Fellow United fan here
Interestingly, you dont hear United fans referring to United as 'Man U' its usually fans of other clubs. Matt Busby hated the term 'The Busby Babes' apparently too, The Red Devils became more of an official nickname AFAIK in the 50's because he (Sir Matt) thought it more reflected the character of his team.
@@Clouds_wheelchair I agree with him I always thought 'The Busby Babes' sounds dumb.
history and football, my favorite things in the world, this is going to be my favorite video of yours, i can just tell
I’m a massive Arsenal fan, this season has me pumped up.
Arsenal fan here too can't be more pumped for the rest of the season 👍
tottenham fan here, I cant say the same especially after losing 4-1 to 13th placed leicester
The reasoning is wrong though they are named Arsenal because of the Woolwich Arsenal hell for years in their early days that was their name who controlled Woolwich Arsenal the RA who’s nickname is
The Gunners
🙌🙌🙌 great season here we have. hope we can win the league, but I always try to keep it grounded.
It’s nice to know you’re a Columbus crew fan that’s the team I followed the most in MLS because they had an iraqi player (Justin Meram) I personally support alshorta in the iraqi league and Juventus for european football. Love your history videos but it’s great to see some soccer content
Love Justin Meram! Miss having him on the team.
Mesopotamia’s favourite lion miss having him play in the iraqi national team too
@@mu2900 good to see a fellow Juve fan, despite our hardahips in the club lately😭
@@Kat-jk7zq we’ll bounce back this is still better than the serie B relegation after calciopoli
Love love love love this! This was a very interesting video to see you react to! I learned a lot about EPL football that I honestly didn’t know.
Fun fact about Liverpool and Everton, Everton used to play at Anfield before a dispute over rent I believe it was made Everton come to the decision to leave Anfield and setup at Goodison Park allowing Liverpool to be setup and take Anfield as their home and the rest is history as they say.
Also known as the afterbirth. Up the fucking toffees
Very cool to look at a more lighthearted topic through a historical lens, thanks for doing this!
Since you’re an Ohio guy, one of the more interesting crossover between sports and history is the “American football game that ended a war”, which took place during the 1995 Dayton Accords. There’s a video about it over on the Wayback history channel, definitely a story worthy of more attention.
Another sports/history crossover story that probably should have a full documentary is the history of the Yankees, when I was a kid I read “The Complete History of the New York Yankees, 1901-2001”, which is as much about the politics and history of New York City (Tammany Hall, etc.) and America at large as it is about anything on-field. If you ever get the chance to read it, it’s a pretty incredible hundred-year odyssey.
Thanks again for the video, cheers!
This is a fantastic channel and I am very surprised that you only have done 2 or 3 reactions to it
Fun music-related connection: Steve Harris, founder and bassist of legendary metal band Iron Maiden was a promising football player in his youth and was offered a slot at the West Ham youth academy , but eventually chose music over football. He has supported West Ham very publicly all his life and "Up the Irons" is a common slogan among Iron Maiden fans. I wonder how many of them realize they are actually giving tacit support to West Ham when they say it though.
They've recently produced West Ham related merch (claret and blue, some references to the club) with an official affiliation with the club
Chris...A note about my adopted FA team, Wolverhampton. It is NOT orange on their kit, it is called"old gold". Also, Wolverhampton is know as the "Wanderers" after merging with a cricket club, Blakenhall Wanderers, in 1879. One other notable thing about the Wolves, in 1967, the whole team was imported to play as the Los Angeles Wolves, in the original North American Soccer League, as a preparation to compete in the Premier League, to which they had been recently promoted.
As far as why I, a Chicago native, would choose Wolves as my team? Well, an incredibly rich and very old team from the Midlands, that too often failed to have success, reminded me of a hometown Chicago team that I cheer for, The Cubs!
Does any British football club play in orange? Wolves you say is old gold, Blackpool is tangerine, my team is Maidstone United and it's black and amber for us. Looked up Dundee...says "tangerine" as well. Any others? Maybe in Northern Ireland...
give yourself some credit, the bears fit that too
Also to add on to this, wolves real nickname is the Portuguese national team
@@sam1111979 I would say Wolves is quite a gold colour rather than orange. But Blackpool play in orange in all but name 😂
@@sam1111979 Luton Town, apparently! Orange is mentioned in their Wikipedia page and in other websites, although I cannot find any official club statement on the colours. Hull and Barnet also go with ''amber'' .
History and Football, you are my new favourite CZcamsr!
Never clicked a video of yours fast enough! Love the content! Come on you Gunnars!
This was a fun episode to watch, I'm a big gunners fan! Excited for this season.
As an avid fan of both history and football, I am super hyped you made this video and I hope that you continue to do so in the future. Instant like!
As a big football fan from the Netherlands I can say that football is more like a culture then just a sport. I go to a lot of away games from my big local club PSV Eindhoven. Going to Sevilla next week with 3,000 of my fellow supporters. It is just such a great experience all chanting together and having the best possible time supporting our club that goes a lot further then support in American sports. As I am a big basketball fan as well there is a lot different between sport experience in America and in Europe. BTW Love all your content and I would highly recommend the Netflix Serie: The English Game.
The beginning of this video is so funny to me!
I am a lifelong Tottenham fan, actually related to (by marriage), Bill Nicholson, who is one of the clubs most historically successful coaches. Knowing you were at Kanes goal against Fulham is awesome!
I also have been supporting West Brom as a secondary club since I was a kid since I loved them in FIFA as a child.
I only started watching you in past few weeks and have almost watched all your content in alarming speed. Just so funny to me these lifelong passions are some of yours as well
I'm a newbie American fan to the sport haha and I love history and your channel as well. My favorite leagues are Premier League of course and I love Serie A in Italy as well. Crystal Palace is my team 💯💪🏻 and Napoli in Serie A 🔥
Why did crystal Palace stand out to you?
@British Geo Historian sorry for replying to your comment late! Crystal Palace stood out to me for different reasons; I really like the logo/crest it looks awesome, the history of the crystal palace building is cool, and when I began to follow last season, I kinda liked watching them because they seemed like they always played and fought hard each game, and gave their opponents a tough fight each time, it seemed to me. And I felt myself root for them when I'd watch highlights
Cool reaction. In college (2001) we traveled to the UK and played for the Crystal Palace Eagles. This was before they were a premeire league team. It was pretty cool experience marching on a soccer field as opposed to an american football field (grid iron).
Thank you for this, it was so much fun.
Great way of explaining how the prem works over here at the start. Great vid also up the Chelsea
love your videos man, more videos like this would be great! watching from leicester and going to the game tomorrow vs spurs. COME ON YOUUUUU FOXES 🦊
Love this reaction - can we get more of those? Would be great!
As a die hard Newcastle fan i was shocked to see my team on the thumbnail of your video. Brilliant watch, keep up the good work
EDDIE HOWE'S BLACK AND WHITE ARMY!!
I'm very happy that Madison has a League One team "Forward Madison FC", and the name is fantastic. We're the Flamingos, or Mingos, named after the tradition of putting plastic pink Flamingos on Bascom Hill on the UW campus. The forward part is tribute to the state motto I believe. Awesome jerseys, a 100+ yr old stadium, and great atmosphere. Cool video!
Cool to see some football videos from you Sam. Always nice to see
Who's Sam?
great vid would love more soccer/football content!!
Love this video ik your a history guy but as an American soccer fan it so good to see people that aren’t specifically soccer CZcamsrs or news guys talking about the sport makes it more relevant
I fell in love with Football watching highlights on ESPN top ten, then picked up FIFA ‘06, and catching matches here and there when we could in the States.
Something about Arsenal drew me in fairly early on and I’ve just been in disbelief seeing them at the top of the Prem with a great chance to win it.
Proud Fulhamerican here! So cool that you got to see a game at the Cottage. Very fun to see you rep Fulham. #COYW
Sunderland AFC fan here, love your content.
Ha’way the lads !
I’ve travelled to craven cottage numerous times as an away fan and it’s still one of my favourite stadiums, it’s a great area, stadium is right on the Thames and it’s still got that old authentic feel around it to the point where you feel that you’re going to fall through the stand when you celebrate.
As a Fulham supporter it's so great to see our shirt on this channel 😍 So fun!! 😁😁🍻
Good luck to West Brom!
💪 #ffc
Chelsea fan here. although i'm not really a football person. its just a team my family have always supported over the years. as a non football fan, its incredible to witness the passion for such a game here in the UK. Its basically a religion !
#KTBFFH
I love your reaction to hese untraditional kind of vids, hope u do a more, also i really like the fact that you are a big soccer fan
The Story of the Crystal Palace building itself is pretty cool too if you like architecture. Wonder if there is a good video out there about it...
Great reaction, and a nice change of pace.
Fully agree with your not wanting to support a Big Six (or soon to be Seven) club. I ended up supporting Hull City. Since I've been a fan the Tigers have been in the Premier League, the Championship and League One (thankfully back in the Championship). It hasn't been dull, that's for sure. Up the Tigers! 🐯
Love this crossover. The name of my team, Wigan Athletic, obviously comes from the town of Wigan, in Lancashire (or Grater Manchester to most people outside of Wigan). Not really sure why we have the Athletic bit but it gives us our nickname “the Latics.” There’s honestly never a dull day supporting Wigan
Lifelong Fulham fan here, great shirt! COYW!
You should do these more often even if it’s just once a month, I like the history mixed with the sports fan experience!
fun fact in 1985 Trammel Crow built the Infomart in Dallas modeled after the Crystal Palace, identical structure with tons of windows really neat to drive by.
Outstanding! I've always wondered where the name Hotspur came from. But my heart is blue. 💙
Fulham yeah. I was born in Parson Green and lived three streets away from Craven cottage when I was a baby.
Beyond simply loving the game, I love the history aspect of soccer/football. So many clubs across Europe have fascinating histories/ties to history/politics.
My favorite Premier League team is probably obvious. As a Crew fan you probably don't have the fondest memories of my MLS team (Portland Timbers). Also I support Celtic in Scotland so there are some disagreements there too.
Other side note, HITC Sevens and TIFO Football have done videos that touch on football history, which might make for good reactions.
Great video reaction, for teams next door to each other check out Dundee and Dundee United their grounds are on the same street
I totally get the not wanting to join a bandwagon... that one spoke to me. Also cheering for an underdog or a Championship team makes it so much more satisfying when they achieve greatness.
I like the Seagulls myself, if only for the sheer resilience of the fans after the 1997 season.
But also.. yanno... Nottingham Forest, because Robin Hood 🤣
My dad's side of my family is from Edwinstowe, right there in the heart of Robin Hood country. Forest was a team I considered.
As a Leicester season ticket holder, I remember hearing one of the reasons for the nickname was that Foxs glacier mints were produced in Leicester and being a popular sweet, it gave the club it's nickname. Also the Foxes winning the Prem as 5000/1 outsiders was amazing, the entire decade supporting this club as been a roller coaster but that season was something never to be forgotten, right down to the final game against Everton where a veritable horde of Italians turned up around the club, the weather was sunny with torrential storms, a rainbow and a little bit of Opera added to the occasion by Andrea Bocelli.........as a side note, Leicester were originally called Leicester Fosse and I think the old nickname was the Fossils.
loved this video (big villa fan UTV)
Crystal palace claims they were founded earlier and changed their date on their crest. Something that u might find interesting
They even have a video about it on the official Crystal Palace channel - "Is Crystal Palace F.C. the world's oldest professional football club?"
I have actually seen West Brom play as they came to Charleston less than two hours from me on a preseason friendly tour several years ago.
I like the idea of you going into the history of sports! just like this video i recommend a channel called "Justin Learns Things", he has videos covering how teams got their names and logos from all the major American sports: MLB, MLS, NHL, NBA and NFL. Really cool videos.
I was at that match too. Great match!
I didn’t know you were a Fulham fan! You must be ecstatic with the way this season is playing out so far!
Oh WOW! When you did those videos on your ancestry a while back I was going to comment on if you had a relative called Sammy Whittaker, seeing as you had relatives that fit the bill. I had conveniently been looking up on 1900s-30s Villa history at the time of those videos, very cool that you have confirmed that! (I'm a Villa fan and clearly a fan of this channel, UTV)
Really cool video actually. Big fan of the premier league. I hope to one day catch a Chelsea game at the bridge
I would recommend the "Roots of the Rivalry" series that Rabona TV does on many diffrent football rivalrys across the word from Brazil vs Argentina to AC Milan vs Inter Milan.
The background of the Leicester City badge is actually a cinquefoil that’s the city adopted from Robert de Beaumont who was given the title of earl of Leicester by William the conqueror. But earls being earls means the Earl of Leicester lives in Norfolk
You are correct about Preston North End - in fact only last week Spurs played Preston and it was informally described as the Lilywhite derby
Sheffield United fan here been to two matches in my trips to the UK in the championship right now with WBA but looking to go up this year!
2 of my favorite things. football and history. got on like a house on fire
The Chelsea badge is to do with the Earl of Cadogan who founded the club and initially played in the colours of the earl
History with Hilbert has a great video on the different languages of the British Isles. Maybe you could have a watch and reaction of that?
I love how you said teams stadiums are back to back cause in Scotland Dundee United and Dundee FC stadiums are hundreds of metres away from eachother
Stumbled across this video & heard my team, Rangers mentioned in your kit collection. Biggest, best & ONLY club in Scotland. Welcome to the club. Ps cheers for Malik Tillman, he's magic.
You should do more sport and culture videos, great video mate from a Liverpool fan 👍
I love soccer and love your videos thank you for doing this
@25.40 you had a much more legitimate reason than many to pick a top 6 team. Literally an ancestor, if anything it would have been expected I think.
Newcastle used to be a big team, they were one of the best in the late 90s early 2000s, Alan Shearer, the premier leagues highest ever scorer was a local boy and Newcastle legend, unfortunately they suffered under Mike Ashley until they were bought by the consortium and they are simply returning to the levels they used to be, I think they set the international record transfer fee when they signed Shearer. I'd recommend you look into them and their history, they've had some great players, many of which are some of the best of all time including Shearer, Ginola, Gascoigne and Keegan.
Hi, Chris, very unexpected and very interesting. Something on the history of football would be good. Another subject of interest is the history of medicine. There is a lot of good stuff about that.
Everton was the 1st team to play at Anfield also Liverpool's original name was Everton FC & Athletic Grounds Limited but the FA at the time told them to change it because they wasn't allowed to use the name Everton so the owner of ground changed it to Liverpool.
On a similar note how about history of abandoned stadia, either side of 'the pond.' I've seen a couple of videos comparing then and now, but not with much text to go along.
I would love to see you cover some Medieval battles like the Battle of Hattin
Mitro's on fire!🔥
My favorite PL football club is Liverpool FC, but as a Serbian, I support my fellow countrymen in football aka Mitrović and Lukić in Fulham, Tadić at Ajax,...
Great to see another Serb 🇷🇸🇷🇸🇷🇸
I appreciate you wearing a Fulham jersey as I’m a Fulham supporter.
This has to be your best video COYS COYS
My beloved Nottingham Forest and our neighbours Notts County are on opposite banks of the River Trent. Surprise surprise, we can't play home matches at the same time 😂
Rugby is the sport to play. As a former player and now a coach i love the game. Also could you do a video about the history of Rugby?
For stadiums that are close to each other, check Independiente and Racing Club from argentina. The #3 and #4 biggest clubs in the country, they're one block away from each other and back in the day players would walk from one stadium to the other hwen they faced each other
I was tempted to call Southampton the "Aints" but that's just the Falcon fan in me taking extra shots at the head hunters in New Orleans. Lol.
Well if you want more lightheaded history stuff I recommend Extra Credits' 'So You Haven't Read', particularly on The Hobbit and A Christmas Carol. They go into the history behind the books and it's very fascinating
My only exposure to premier league was ted lasso. thanks for sharing this video
My favorite football club is in Germany, SV Darmstadt 98 is referred to as the Lilien (Lilies) but don't flower fool you. The Lily was the royal flower of the royal house of the Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt (Hesse by the Rhine). They currently sit first in Bundesliga 2 being chased by Hamburg SV, Heidenheim and FC Kaiserslautern. They now get $$$ from Merck who is Darmstadts largest employer and with a major stadium renovation are poised to make a run for the Bundesliga for the second time since reunification.
My entire family are West Brom fans, so me being a Villa fan is fun when we watch the footy on tv
I don't know if you'd be interested but there are videos like this for the major American sports leagues as well. It's fun stuff
Hi Chris, I'm a Tottenham fan but grown up in south east London in the borough of Greenwich regarding the arsenal beginnings where the picture of the garrison is shown its known as Woolwich army barracks which is still there and been there since 18th century the munition place is now housing, located right next to the river Thames.

9:30 Chelsea is the most Chicago Cub-like Premier League team. The stadium in the residential area that looks like if you blink you miss it only adds to that vibe.
Come Awn CHEL-sea!💙
Interesting, nice to see an American who enjoy the beautiful game of football (or soccer). I'm from Sweden myself but since 1970's swedish TV have broadcasted the english top division and therefore many Swedes love english football
Australia football (AFL) is in a similar position with lots of teams being located close to each. Out of the 18 teams in the AFL, 10 are located in the same state (Victoria) and 9 of them in the same city (Melbourne). The exception is Geelong which is about a 40 minute drive from Melbourne.
@@DerekDerekDerekDerekDerekDerek @cunt320 AFL doesn't have a regulation system. There are different leagues across the country such as the VFL (Victoria football league) but no regulation. AFL is not the same as soccer, they are two different sports.
Went to an under 21s Everton vs Southport match with my mum and aunt, who both support Everton. At one point in the game, the ball got launched way up into the air and seemed to be heading towards us, sat behind the goal. My mum goes "I think it's coming towards me... oh, it is" and, about a second later, it bounced square off her head. Everton lost the game and, being a Liverpool fan, I never miss a chance to mention that part of the story
That Alt. WBA kit is tough!
Speaking of stadiums near by you should see in South America specially in Brazil and Argentina , it is closer than Everton and Liverpool
If you want to see two uk clubs with the closest proximity from stadium to stadium check out the Dundee clubs in Scotland
Loved this video as a pl fan. West ham chant 'IRONS IRONS IRONS' At every game. Very popular phrase
My friend is from England, and is a massive Aston Villa fan. So looking for a club in England to root for, he talked me into that one. So someday I hope to go to London with him and go to a match.
