An addition to your theory: I think Tyler propably got the cancer working down in the mines, as dust lung can lead to cancer, and he would be exposed to a lot of dust, repairing electrical fixtures in a coal mine.
This explains why there are references to the island being sick/tainted/infested, as the island/mine itself would have caused his illness.
In addition it would also explain why the objective is to get to the mine, and destroy the source of the suffering, as his cancer came from down in the mine.

As someone who's in a pretty dark place myself, I can relate with what happens throughout the game.
The reluctance to admit that improvements have been made. The perspective twisting to suit my depression telling me that everyone hates me. And the heavy desire for suicide.
It's horrible, to the point of it being suffocating. I try to see the good in life, but it's really tough when the negativity tends to weigh more.
I have tried to get into therapy. I've called the suicide hotlines many times over. Nothing really seems to work.
But knowing I'm not alone, that's all I need to know. I am not alone throughout this. Neither are you. Getting help can be tough, especially if you are as closed of a book as I am. But if I can hold off for two years of this non-stop, then you can too. Stay strong

You practically played a game with the viewer mentioning the crack in the wall as a possibility just to plant the idea that there's another way around the boss. That and the game itself is absolutely beautiful. The story of Tyler with his battle of losing everything, and him genuinely losing it all before you the player can change the ending of how it all unfolds is absolutely gorgeous, I have nothing but respect for Pyro and Wadaholic, the combination of the tragic storyline beautifully crafted by Wadaholic and Pyros editing was so incredible I was almost in tears. Most people imagine depression as just being sad if theyve never been. But it’s also really fucken scary. At one point I was contemplating suicide almost a decade ago when I was a freshman in high school. I was going to try and OD on my meds at the time but i stopped last second. That night I went to the hospital and was admitted into the psychiatric ward. It really helped me. I was in therapy before and after this.
Now im a senior in college, working on finishing my bachelors in general psychology and ive been off meds (with doctors permission!! Dont go cold turkey, contact your doc first) for a few months now.
I still sometimes get sad or have my moments of anxiety but Ive seen the depths and ive been working a lot. Im far happier now with a better vision on life.

This is a small detail but I highly appreciate it. The first 3/4 of the video is fairly lighthearted but as we start nearing the final quarter, everything starts to get more somber, less jokes, more grounded. Until eventually the finale is reached where all bets are off and everything is played out in full with the facts being given straight instead of being clouded by jokes. It’s a fantastic storytelling method and while it is small and seems obvious in hindsight to do, it helps set a certain tone and lets the viewer know to “pay attention, shit is going down”.

I think that is a completely true statement
(even if selfharm and suicide doesnt apply to everyone, those are understandable references for the misery one's going through)
To stay in ones "comfort zone", meaning just living the way it is right now with that pain and misery and cope with it somehow is easier.
but to overcome depression (or many other mental health issues) one has to figure out what the problems are to fix them.
One after another even if it means stress, struggle, being tiring.
Therapy helps in the way that you're told HOW to fight. But still you're the one doing it.
To just keep going and keep pressing that "comfort zone" of yours and keep fighting. It will get better if you keep at it.
      THAT is hard.

There’s something beautiful about the mere presence of the good ending and the ending or new game plus.

This is something that IMO would've worked really well if someone wanted to make a game genuinely about facing consequences for killing monsters in an rpg, as opposed to undertale which gives you, better lore, more characterization, easier difficulty, and a good ending for following the massive [HINT: The monsters are people too, and it bad to hurt them].

  • @KarmaKins
    @KarmaKins Před 2 lety +446

I find myself wondering if, with the twist in mind, the reason the island that Tyler so dearly loved and thought of as his dream come true and "home" ending up as such a hostile place to you and with the ultimate goal being the irradiated mine, is because deep down Tyler understood that all of his problems truly did start with the island and his adoration of it, from deciding to permanently stay there, trying to force a loved one to follow his lifestyle, and him ultimately getting cancer from presumably inhaling toxic substances inside there.
It was never a paradise. He threw his life away in a spur of the moment decision to live there and couldn't cope with going back to the mainland or other people not loving it as much as he did. Now it's a decayed ruin that wants to take his life all over again. His darkness blames it on an infestation, the illness, but the island was always just a flight of whimsy and fantasy that was never going to last. Hiding danger, and for all Tyler talks about feeling isolated and lonely, the island already WAS that, he was just too caught up in his happy little fantasy of being in a small tight knit sea community to care.
And here in the present, the island is once again the center of a fantasy, but now it's a dark, horrid one. In the bad ending you could say it's a symbol of how betrayed and isolated Tyler felt by everyone around him as everything began to go wrong. But in the good ending (and the Hunter Ending) I think you transform the fantasy into Tyler accepting that neither fantasy was ever good for him, that the place he called Home was never somewhere he should have stayed. That Fort Oasis was not his Happy Place. Hell, even the name could be symbolic. An Oasis in the desert, a perfect island in the sea, but ultimately just a mirage.
The island took his life. And the island was going to do it again. Both times, by his own choice. Coming to terms with that and truly leaving the place behind is one of the main keys to getting the good endings, where you end up in a beautiful field away from the sea.

Coming back to this video after while because I’m reading a book in my senior year called “When Breath Becomes Air”. It’s a memoir of a neurosurgeon developing severe cancer and it documents his experiences and life after his diagnosis. He knows he’s going to die and stuff. There’s a part where he discusses the inkling of hope he was given after his tumor shrank, so begins doing more physical therapy associated with building strength and endurance for long and brutal surgery stretching hours on end. He end up not being able to go through the the whole thing because he gets cold feet, so his assistant has to finish the last few steps. He can’t go back to normal because of his cancer diagnosis, he’s lost something that made him whole. It’s a pretty interesting parallel to draw tbh.

I'm sure someone else has probably already said this but I think the New Game+ actually represents Tyler's cancer treatment. The bloody walls, the growths, etc. were representative of that in the original game and the Hunter itself even looks like a man made of tumors - it being unkillable would be Tyler's feelings of hopelessness over the years of treatment. And every chapter is like the treatments pushing it back, giving Tyler a bit more time to live but still feeling hunted by it as it hacks away at his body. Okay, now that I've actually watched the rest of that section, I feel even more sure: "The torment has ended" being Tyler's remission. The fact that you do kill the Hunter after so much pain and effort just keeping it at bay, really solidifies the idea that this is him beating his cancer.

The whole point of the story - at least, to me - is that overcoming his cancer didn't actually make his life any better. The darkest parts of your mind are fucking terrifying, and most of the time you have to confront them alone. The idea that the most obvious path to reach the game's "goal" is to burn your connections and destroy your memories hits incredibly close to home for most people who have dealt with depression. When everything feels so bleak and your mind is made up, it takes real willpower to not push people away from you. You think you're protecting them from your inevitable end, but you're only leading yourself farther into darkness.

So, funfact about the "Happy Place" meditation the therapist suggests: The description given would be a recipe for disassociation. While that technique can be useful in helping people with all sorts of things, it is also the basis of a memory palace for instance, and it can be used to help control mood, if a person using it has the wrong experiences with it and the space becomes associated with fear or anxiety or loss of control, or if they don't develop some method of controlling the happy place such as conditions they need to be in in order to enter it, the person can end up overusing it, which can lead to a disassociation problem. Basically, your brain starts to have issues thinking of your physical surroundings and the fact you are physical and within your surroundings. While this is perfectly fine for very short periods of time, such as when you look into your memory to remember where something is, extended periods of time in disassociation leads to things like body dysmorphia, impulse control issues, or even delusions and hallucinations.
So basically what I'm trying to say is that the Therapist our radio dude had may have actually made his issues worse by barely teaching his patient about the things to avoid with this coping technique. How's that for some Silent Hill shit?

      @CJojo_13_ Před 2 lety +13

@Abu Yep, the short answer is that he's not worth watching. The long answer requires a lot more articulation.
MauLer is a video essayist and a host of EFAP. His video essays are long winded, repetitive garbage. He should learn a thing or two about editing a script, because he regularly repeats himself without adding or elaborating on anything, just writing the same statement in different ways. "This film has earned the title of being very left leaning." "This film has very much pushed an agenda." "I'm simply pointing out that the film is clearly left leaning, which is frustrating for everybody who enjoys Star Wars and does not lean left." "Those who love the film had to theorize plots and fan theories..." "They have to create fan theories..." "They have to create their own story in their own heads..." "This would be an example of someone writing the script for Ryan." "Stop writing the script for them it's really annoying me." "...but there is something about them you guys may not have noticed, people writing Ryan Johnson's script for him."
MauLer is the definitive example of a college student who has nothing interesting to say, who will bloat out their paper with a bunch of filler and regurgitation to meet a word count. MauLer fanboys will uncritically respond to detractors of him by saying "long man bad," because they're very unwilling to accept that so many people versed with superior essayists (many of which make videos that are just as long as MauLer's) find his videos to lack substance.
Him and his friends / guests regularly abuse the use of the word "objectively" to the point it looses it's original meaning.
Objectively: In a way that is based on facts and not influenced by personal beliefs and feelings.
Art: the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.
"Objectively good" and "objectively bad" are oxymoronic statements, objectively. People using information in a piece of art to inform their conclusions on the art doesn't make their opinion any less of an opinion, or even make their assessment on information in the art factually correct. Mauler made a lot of mistakes in his Dark Souls 2 video on the PvP mechanics, a lot of what he states is just factually wrong. No critic is infallible to being factually wrong on something, and them obsessing with making claim to their critique as "objective" is laughable. The people on the EFAP crew don't even make a good argument for their own position on this matter. Shadiversity in his wealth of infinite genius, made a video that argued for objectivity in art so poorly, it only reinforces the notion of subjectivity. He says there are different standards that different people will judge art by. So in other words... objectivity is: 1. something that is popularly believed (this is somehow not opinion based). 2. a made up, arbitrary standard that validates a position (also not an opinion apparently).
EFAP gets worse. Imagine a whole podcast that regularly has guests like Aydin Paladin who cite "sources" like Quillette (eugenicist, pseudoscience quackery) in her videos, or E;R (a cryptofascist who's comment sections are littered with with pro Hitler and other far right talking points. His Steven Universe videos are a very blatant example of making fascist ideology more palpable to those who don't pay attention and assume it's all just jokes. On his alternate channel, one of his Steven Universe videos is basically just a "name the Jew" compilation. He's also admitted to saying that he brings people to come to the "Jewish Question" by joking "until the punchline really lands." In one his Death Note videos, he made fun of Heather Heyer's murder that happened during the Unite the Right rally).

I might sound like I have no empathy or I might not understand what I'm talking about, but... I'm pretty sure the person behind this videogame *knows* what cancer feels like. Either someone close, or themselves even, had this terrible thing happening to them.
I really hope not, but the way they showed the toll that cancer has on the mind of the victim is... It hits too close to home, in my opinion, and I mean that literally.
My grandmother and my father went through this, one after the other. It was horrible, and I feel like I'm still... going over it, also because I was *so little.* Around middleschool, if I'm not mistaken.
And the depression. The depression really hits deep. When you feel like you're cursed from the start. Me having had THREE cases of cancer in my family (my aunt happened when I was too little to even remember her) I feel like I'm living a life that's just... gonna end in pain and tragedy.

the interesting thing is Total Chaos was actually way longer under development, back in 2004 it was just exploring a spooky house or hotel while John Romero was chasing (or floating) after you, the 2008 version was a little more sci-fi and had a multiplayer mode with a Counter Strike style buy menu , 2012 was more found footage (because of the camera), and so in 2014 it would finally shape up into the Total Chaos we know
also, i was surprised by the whole hideout thing, where you can store items, remove radiation and such, along with a bed (i suppose there was supposed to be a sleep deprivation mechanic in the mod which explains Tyler yawning), honestly, i'd love to see that hideout mechanic in the remastered version (though it would be rare like the mobile gas stove), also would be interesting to have a survival mode to hold on as much as you can while using your hideout for stuff and buying items and such
anyways, it's so great to see WADaholic back on Total Chaos, i will be waiting patiently

You know with the ending in mind. I wonder if the invisible enemy In the grave yard is a representation of Tyler's cancer? It's invisible, comes out of no where with no warning, and it's close to a part of Tyler's mind he hid away.

It also blocked his path and led to a harder recovery because the cancer wasn't the only issue.
