  • Well its been a long road with this 2014 Toyota Rav4. Toyota was really horrible but in the end I was happy. I know this is a long video but in the end I update you on the whole situation.
Recap on why I am doing this, my 2014 Toyota Rav4 EV failed. I dont know why. Toyota didnt know why either. Ultimately they refused to fix it even though I had a TOYOTA warranty that I PAID for. Toyota wants nothing to do with this car. This car was only a compliance vehicle that the government required them to make. If you still own one I wish you the best of luck! Thankfully the Toyota Rav4 EV chapter of my life is over.
PS I still have the parts car that you can see in the background. If anyone wants it let me know.

A very good trick to use when you are having your types of problems (especially parts problems) with a car is to write (directly) the CEO of the company (in Japan) and explain your problems. That can often get you a very good response to a very hard problem. They have the authority to fix almost anything and they hate disgruntled customers. They often don't have a clue about problems their underlings are hiding from them and when they find out heads will roll, that's the Japanese culture.

Dessicant module, sounds like it, that third cover removed. I needed to replace precharge resistor in a Nissan Leaf pack, twice (story there). The first was in the summer, very hot & humid. When I had to replace it again, I found some condensation in the pack, so I added some dessicant and also made a little tent in the garage with a dehumidifier running to get less moisture in it the second time.

Sad story. It's a shame that these early EVs get such a short life - just because the manufacturer won't support it. I really hope the Right to Repair movement takes off.

Great informative videos but you have me nervous about my purchase of a 2014 RAV4 EV with 72k that I’m waiting to be shipped to me in Austin.
Will i be able to get it serviced?
If you have the time your opinion would be greatly appreciated.
I think like a lot of people I was totally surprised to discover that this car exists and hope it is not too good to be true.
Again thanks for sharing the excellent videos.

Warranty Seals are illegal in the USA anyways so you didn’t void your warranty. FTC started fining companies for using them to void warranties.

I owned a Tesla for 5 years and I was worried about repairs at that point. I couldn’t imagine owning that RAV4 EV so far out of production, it was inevitable that you’d have problems. Now if it was 100% Toyota, different story!!

We’ve had our 2015 Model S for about 4 years now, and the only issues were the MCU screen and the motorized door handles. We’ve had our 2014 RAV4 EV for about a year, and so far, no issues. Should be the same technology in both, and so far, the actual drivetrain part is fine with no noticeable changes in battery life.

Wow, tough getting the HV cables off, doa! Maybe you talk about it in one of the trex trailer videos, but do you talk about how the two pack contactors are closed? Both the external extender pack and the Chademo fast charger might might have had some life impact on the contactors. What was the contactor failure, did they weld close, coil go bad?

Really glad you got the car sold after giving it a real strong chance at survival. I think that would be my last Toyota. Its not really the dealers fault the manufacturer was in a pinch to build zero emission vehicles and partnered with Tesla to do it. You would expect that they would carry parts and technical support for them for 10 years like any other product. Why would many give them another shot on a full EV???

this brings up a good question (that i hope you could answer) given the shorter lifespan of EVs, is an all electric model 3 actually more efficient than something like an all gas rav4 or a hybrid rav4? i’m a big proponent to saving resources and using them for as long as possible and was just wondering this. i am in the market for a new car and am wondering your thoughts on this for those three cars
