Aspen/Garmin Digital Autopilot Interface - my upgrade is complete!

- My panel upgrade is complete - the FAA has approved Aspen's new software for the Evolution PFD, and with that the avionics shop could reinstate the digital autopilot interface between the Aspen Evolution MAX PFD and the Garmin GFC 600 autopilot. At last, I have arrived at the end of this upgrade journey, after about 13 months.
What you see here is what I believe is the very first (and maybe still only, at the time the video was made) airplane which has this new digital autopilot interface between Aspen and Garmin. It allows altitude preselect, native GPSS support, and all those things a state-of-the-art autopilot setup should be able to do today.
A big thank you to the fine people at Gardner Lowe in Peachtree City, GA, who installed my avionics: www.gardneravs.com

Having used a lot of avionics in my career, I think a setup like this is actually more useful than a GX000-type setup. So much good information immediately accessible to the pilot and not hidden behind menus and multiple button presses. If I had the money I'd own something exactly like this.
I agree, for the reasons you mentioned. And I'll add one more: the fully-integrated avionics systems are very difficult to upgrade with new features. Things like ADS-B and WAAS/LPV approaches were not an easy addition for some of the earlier integrated avionics systems. My pick-and-choose approach gives me a lot more flexibility for future changes.
- Martin
Thanks Martin. A big fan of your channel. It's wonderful to see how the avionics are so coordinated and function efficiently and smoothly. The voice command button is really cool, the only command I would add to it is "make the monthly payments"!
Beautiful video Martin! Thanks for uploading. Awesome AP!
Thanks 😁
- Martin
Martin, I just love the way you display instruments close up, thank for the ride!
So glad to see the panel plan finally come together. It was quite the journey. Glad it is all working as planned.
Thanks, Jim. Yes, it's been a journey - but I'm so happy with how it turned out in the end.
Hope to see you soon!
- Martin
Martin, I’m impressed with your knowledge and humility. Some folks on CZcams scare me.
Thank you for the kind words.
- Martin
Nice review of the upgrades! ❤
Great setup Martin!
Thanks 😁
- Martin
Great to get a shout out from ATC. You do have a great channel Martin.
Thank you 😁
- Martin
Glad to see that you are getting the final fixes on your panel. I have enjoyed your videos on this panel update.
I also noticed and enjoyed the Choo Choo VOR (CQO) around Chattanooga, I left a 40 year career on a Class 1 railroad and now retired for 5 years. I have always loved aviation but went to the railroad career as a locomotive engineer, it was a very good career for me. I never got my pilot license but thoroughly enjoy aviation videos like yours, quenching my thirst to understand aviation, especially IFR stuff!
You do such good camera work and your calm and kind demeanor teach well! Thanks for the content, I am now a subscriber.
I am glad you enjoyed this video, and my IFR videos in general. I'll keep making them!
- Martin
This day has been a long time coming for you Martin. So happy for you.....
Thanks, Steve. I am really excited and pleased with how everything turned out.
- Martin
Martin! I found it! maybe if I comment on all your videos they will start showing up in my feed
Great little airfield. I got to see my plane in the ramp right before the cut.
Cool - a cameo appearance! 👍
- Martin
Thanks for letting us fly along with you, Martin.. I noticed the weather in Cedar Rapids was really bad yesterday.. Hopefully, you got in today. Much better weather. Glad you error on the side of caution and stay away from that ice!! The high today in Tucson was mid 60's... (-:
Hi Rick. The weather is horrible here right now. I wanted to meet a friend in Chicago yesterday but had to scrap the flight because of icing, low ceilings, strong wind/turbulence, and snow in the forecast. Brrr - I'm so ready for spring. Stay where you are, at least for now! 😁
- Martin
Wow!! You can talk to the avionics 😅 amazing tech
Love your videos Martin. Great upgrade! Thanks!
Thanks for these videos Martin. I haven’t been able to fly for a couple years now but you help me stay proficient with radio work and basic procedures!
Glad I can help, Evan - and hopefully you can get back into the cockpit before too long.
- Martin
Thanks Martin for another excellent, professional video!
Great video!
Excellent!
I continue to enjoy your professionalism as a private pilot. You are a pilot to emulate. Godspeed.
Thank you for the kind words.
- Martin
Another very informative and enjoyable video Martin. Thank you for sharing. Will have to watch a few more times to pick up on all those new avionics features. Beautiful panel..Enjoy!
Congratulations Martin. I'm sure it was not fun waiting to get this all done. But now that it's behind you i hope you will enjoy many hours of snag free flying. Seeing the altitude sync, altitude level out, automatic turning enroute, etc. show what a great system you have.. Well done.
Thanks - yes, I am very pleased with how everything turned out. It's all working perfectly now!
- Martin
It don't get any better than Martin Pauly. Wish he could come to ANY.
Thank you for the kind words!
- Martin
Martin, that panel looks awesome! Looks like a new G36. All you need is A/C and you have a new plane. Congrats !
I think in some ways the avionics is better than a new G36.
Air conditioning would be nice - maybe we'll add that when the interior gets a (much needed) upgrade.
Of course, right now a TKS ice protection system would be more useful than AC 🤣
- Martin
Being originally from Louisville, it was nice to see some familiar sites. Got my PPL there at Louisville-Bowman Field in 1981. Enjoyed the flight. 👏
Thanks, Marty - glad you enjoyed the flight!
- Martin
Awesome Martin 👍✈️
Thanks, John.
- Martin
Thank you for this nice video 🙏
My pleasure 😊
- Martin
Really love your content
Thank you 😁
- Martin
Thanks for your patience, Martin. It was a journey for sure!
Another fan of your channel here. That panel makes IFR so much easier. Nice touch down on landing by the way.
Thanks! 👍
- Martin
Nice lookimg avionics and good to see all is working well. I'm sure you'll still have lots to learn about the systems, and share with us!. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Ken. Yes, I am still learning about the capabilities of the new equipment, and about the most efficient ways to use everything. But it's beginning to become familiar.
- Martin
Thanks, Martin. Looking to make similar changes in my baby Beech, so all of this documentation you have provided has been very helpful!
Glad it was helpful, Tango Kilo - good luck for your upgrade!
- Martin
Very enjoyable. Perfect amount of IFR
Thanks - and yes, a few clouds, a little rain, but no worries about whether I'd be able to see the runway at the missed approach point. 👍
- Martin
You’re the second youtuber that has stopped by my city. Hope your stay in Louisville was pleasant.
It was short but enjoyable - thank you!
- Martin
That panel is just mind blowing spectacular. You must be over the moon with it. I think it was about a year ago you flew 70TB to Falcon Field to drop your baby off and let the upgrade process begin. I hope you have years of enjoyment ahead of you.
Thank you, David. Yes, I am so very pleased with how everything turned out.
- Martin
Great video Martin. I like the feature on the GI275 traffic page. The type of aircraft and tail number helps a bunch. Nice upgrades.
Thanks, Steve. I believe that traffic page you are referring to is on the Aspen MFD, not the GI-275.
- Martin
So excited everything is finally integrated! I predict that the next electronics upgrade will be a less flickery-on-video backup attitude indicator ;)
We'll see... GoPros seem to have a harder time with Garmin glass than with Aspen. The GI-275 is a stunningly beautiful display - sharp and crisp, and very readable. But until my primary PFD fails, it really is just a backup.
Regards,
Martin
that is a very nice integration with the Aspen's .. dream piece of kit.
Yes - it all works great together!
- Martin
@@martinpauly on my next airplane (likely a bonanza) .. i will have to give this setup some consideration. -- only change i'd make is keep the IFD's .. love my IFD440.
Nice video. The voice command for the GTN is a really neat feature.
I agree, and I' still scratching on the surface. I need to try more of the available commands and see what they can do.
- Martin
I really like how you’ve taken advantage of all 3 Aspen screens to keep all the important info in front of you. That leaves two big GTNs to do FMS functions and a large map for SA. That heading and alt sync back to the GFC600 without the need for GPSS makes this setup much nicer than before…. Now memorize all those Telligence commands and you’ll be all set.
That's exactly the idea behind my screen configuration, Andy.
The digital interface between the Aspen PFD and the Garmin GFC 600 is a huge improvement for this setup - I'm glad I got to see the old way (analog interface) so I can really appreciate what Garmin and Aspen have done here. It's fantastic!
Now, where's that cheat sheet for the Telligence commands... 😊
- Martin
@@martinpauly I tried the cheat sheet and it gave me your mother’s maiden name and SSA number through the TikTok link 😊 There are more commands than you’ll likely remember. Ask and you shall receive, seek and you will find.
I would expect you are like a kid in the candy store. I know I would be. Awesome video and great upgrades. Just don't hit the wrong button ha ha.
Yes, that's about how I feel! It is great to see all the equipment working together so well.
- Martin
I got to work you out of KPEA today, next time you come to Des Moines stop by for a visit!
Flying for a living mainly jets from the big A and now the big B, when it comes to „small“ airplanes, the combination of a GTN with an Aspen to me is as good as it gets. We had to switch from Aspen to G3X when our KAP140 quit and we decided to install a GFC500. I still shed a tear from time to time when I see an Aspen installation. Especially when it‘s such a nice one as yours…
I am weighing all of my options for a future full panel upgrade on my plane. Do you mind if I ask your opinion on both the G3X and the Aspen. If you had to do it all over again and had the option to go with the Aspen instead of the G3X would you do it? I was leaning towards sticking with all Garmin because I wanted to keep everything the same but I'm trying to get other opinions before I make my decision.
this is my fav in flight channels, love the detail illustration for instruments, I would like to see you make a video of how you decide power settings in different phase of flight for bonanza TC, next with how you plan your routes like this having airways in front part and direct airport on 70% remaining. Let me guess, you cruised at 25 in hg 2500 rpm
Thanks for the kind words - I am glad you enjoy the content.
Cruise for me is usually 2,500 RPM and wide-open throttle, so I take whatever manifold pressure I get that way.
- Martin
@@martinpauly You always an owner taking good care of engine endurance, i am sure that wide open throttle won't hurt in the long run
@@riclam66 Why would it hurt? At my typical cruise altitude (7,000-12,000 feet), power is greatly reduced already. No need to close the throttle and make it even worse.
- Martin
Martin, I love your new panel & the capabilities it offers for IFR!! Does the new Garmin 500 AP have the Smart Glide as well? If so I would appreciate seeing it in action! I’m thinking about one for my Cherokeev180. Thanks for sharing! Don/NE Ohio 🙂
Yes, both the GFC 500 and 600 support Garmin's SmartGlide. I haven't actually tried it myself yet - will have to do that one of these days.
- Martin
After a couple hundred hours with the gfc autopilots I've defaulted to using pitch mode for climbs. Less pitch adjustments make for a more comfortable pax ride. Mountain wave with IAS mode engaged can be really annoying during a hot heavy climb. I'm mostly in TC and TN Bonanzas, so it is a little different, but 7 degrees pitch up until climb gradient requirements are meant then 4-5 pitch up, depending on weight, the rest of the way. I'll use IAS occasionally for cruise climb though.
"Big fan of your CZcams channel". Got a real kick out of that. Really nice to see the complete system working. A little more work on the voice commands and you can just say, "I'm tired, take me home, wake me up on short final", Lol
I like your idea - maybe the voice commands can ultimately do the radio conversation with ATC for me. 🤣
- Martin
Great video as usual Martin. Glad you are back. How are you getting the digital ATIS? Thanks.
Thanks! There are a few different apps available which show the D-ATIS, like this one:
apps.apple.com/us/app/atis-app/id1498344508
ForeFlight can also do it in the high subscription level.

Martin
Sweet avionics Martin! Must feel like flying an airliner. Years ago I flew from Marietta to KY often, and NELLO and GQO was the favored route back then. Also good your voice command feature understands a German accent! 😂
Thanks, George. The new cockpit feels great - it doesn't have the redundancy of an airliner, but is probably close in terms of capabilities, with the exception of some things like autoland and RNP AR approaches.
- Martin
Some airliners aren't equipped this well.
@@jetdoctn True!
Now you have to go back to Aspen, with your Aspen.
Good idea - the synthetic vision image would really be something to see!
- Martin
Great video, Martin. Where's the audio panel? Is it built into the GTX750xi? Also, is there are pre-set climb or descent rate built into the GFC-600? What I mean by that is if you're at 6,000' and get an altitude change to 4,000', will the autopilot automatically select a descent rate if you don't put on in?
Thanks for sharing, I enjoyed this.
Great looking plane and panel congrats on the upgrade!!!! Are you in Iowa?
Thanks, Pete - and yes, I live in Iowa.
- Martin
@@martinpauly I picked up your in CR! Bellevue Iowa here!
Need a digital adapter for Aspen to GFC 500 too!
Yes, that would be nice!
- Martin
Martin .. could you do a video about the XM weather vs ADSB and the GDL unit you put in.
Hello Martin, as usual, very nice video. I have one question for you, did you have data coverage on your phone at 8000 ft?
Occasionally. It's not good enough for much, but an occasional few seconds of connectivity are enough to get weather updates or the digital ATIS for the destination airport.
- Martin
Great videos as usual, I’m ready to get the GFC600 and a P/MFD can you share the reason you went with aspen vrs garmin? Thx keep the cool videos comin😊
That's been asked (and answered) a lot. All Garmin would indeed be the easiest. But I like the ability to mix and match my equipment, so supporting Aspen and Garmin on this project seemed like a good idea. Furthermore, I like the increased redundancy of a multi-screen Aspen system, and there is a lot of information on three Aspen screens (more than on one large Garmin PFD).
- Martin
I’m surprised you didn’t get the GDL 51R XM receiver. It’s a remote mounted unit. Doesn’t have to sit on the dash. I have one and love it.
Great video as usual. Is the upgrade performed with software alone or is there some equipment fiddling necessary? It will be interesting to see if the upgrade helps tighten approaches. Have you had time to check this out? Many thanks!
Thanks, Robert. If you already have an Aspen and a GFC 600, my understanding is you can remove an ACU (which provides analog connections to the Aspen) and a bunch of wires for the analog interface. The digital interface probably requires a couple of new wires, but you should save a little weight overall once it's all done. And the software needs to be updated in both the Aspen and the GFC 600.
I have not flown approaches enough to see if it makes a difference. Need a little more experience with the new setup.
- Martin
“Your plane, completes me…”
😁
Why does the camera view from the right rear tilt when you bank? If its fixed in place wouldn't it not tilt with the aircraft banking?
The camera stabilization does that. I like how this makes it look like the airplane banks.
- Martin
I apologize if this is covered in a different video, but what software/customization do you use for your ipad/EFB? It does not quite look like foreflight.
Hi Ted,
What you're seeing in my newer videos is Garmin Pilot.
- Martin
Glad to see you got the Aspen/Garmin interface finalized. I am interested in how you manage all the different databases necessary for your setup. Are you keeping the Aspen DBs up to date with the Jeppesen terrain and the Seattle Avionics charts for the MFD? I assume you keep the Garmin 750s DBs up to date with a Garmin bundle? I see you use Garmin Pilot on your iPad. I recently switched to GP from FF and would be interested in seeing some videos on how you plan flights and then execute them with GP and you panel avionics.
To keep it simple, I only update the databases of the GTNs - sometimes the GI-275, because it's easy to do along with the GTNs. I don't have a subscription for the Aspens, nor do I think I need one. Charts are on my iPad (and an iPhone as backup). So it's really the GTNs that matter, and they are quite easy and quick to update.
- Martin
@@martinpauly Thx for the response. I have the Aspen 2000 Pro Max and a GNX375. So keeping the DBs up to date on those is getting expensive and that doesn’t include the Jepp terrain DB for the Aspens. I have just started using GP so it’s still nee to me and I haven’t bought the Premium upgrade yet. I want to keep charts and terrain on the Aspens since the 375 display is a little small and in case my iPad died on me. It sure would be nice to have common DBs that work on all devices.
@@GrumpyBumpy Yes, a universal database solution - pay once, use on all devices. You have my vote for that! 👍
Enjoy your videos. What program do you use to get digital AWOS?
I know of two iPhone apps which can do that: "ATIS App" and "ForeFlight".
It's Digital ATIS, by the way, not Digital AWOS. Pretty much any EFB can give you a digital copy of the AWOS.
- Martin
Thanks
Not sure if someone asked this already, but is the interface apply to the GFC 500 as well?
Hey Martin. It's been awhile. Big thanks again for the multi-engine video. Made my oral a breeze. I like this video too. Stay safe
Thanks, and enjoy flying twins!
- Martin
Just curious why you picked SDF over LOU? Fuel over $1/gallon cheaper. Nice panel, like the voice commands.
Probably just because I'm in love with large airports.
- Martin
@@martinpauly and nice getting that shout out from the controller!
@@ProPilotPete Yes, that was a nice surprise!
G,day Martin from Sydney Australia.
My questions are more specific.
Has the autopilot in 70TB a heading bug knob, like the ones in jets.
Pre flight "run-up" on the fuel flow, is that right, the indicator on the LCD went from bottom to top?
Video: excellent job, sir; great screen text, ATIS, XM weather, PFD measurements, traffic ident and ground reference such as alternative RWY.
🌏🇭🇲
The heading knob is in the Aspen PFD (bottom right) - it sets the heading bug on the HSI, and thus controls the target heading for the autopilot.
My engine instruments have not changed in this upgrade; the EDM930 is still where it used to be.
- Martin
Why did you choose the Garmin system over the Avidyne system?
Not for sure how long it is going to take, but as of Aug. 2023, Garmin has not released software updates for GFC 600 to talk to Aspen Pro Max for Piper Malibu. My radio shop keeps pushing me back. Very frustrating!
I wish I could tell you exactly what the game plan is... All I know is in June my contact at Garmin told me all the GFC 600 loader cards would be updated by end of July; then in Oshkosh I learned they were running a little behind - but I have not been given a new date. I agree, this is a frustrating situation, and I've asked Garmin what a reliable release date is that we can all plan around - hopefully not much longer. The system (Aspen/GFC600) is terrific with the new digital interface, so it should be worth the wait.
- Martin
Just heard from my radio shop that Garmin just released the GFC600 software update for Aspen. Plane goes to shop in November. So happy!
@@swpdds Yes, that's right - the GFC600 software is finally available for many aircraft makes and models, not just the A36. 👍
- Martin
Great video again Martin. I have a Boeing background and a Twin Com with Aspen PFD, STEC55x and altitude select and thinking about an upgrade so I find your recent journey very interesting.
The altitude pre-select in my aircraft is the worst thing a busy Single IR pilot has to deal with and your new setup clearly shows the benefits of the integration - thank-you. One can imagine how something will work but it's not until you see it in action that you understand the upgrade.
I still don't really like having to use only the right knob on the Aspen to select heading and altitude changes especially when ATC give a freq change too. Wouldn't it be a good if the Aspen allowed us to assign the default action for each of the knobs. I personally would make left default to heading and right to altitude and then push if you wanted a different function. What do you think?
Also, was it an option to get the autopilot FMA's on the Aspen or did you choose a separate autopilot mode annunciatior?
It sure would be nice to have dedicated knobs for heading, altitude, airspeed, course, and vertical speed. But I can see why Aspen did it the way they did, as one of their objectives was to provide an easy replacement of mechanical HSIs - so the starting point was to use two knobs the same way as one of those. I've found myself confused on a few occasions as to what I was really changing when reaching for the right knob, but I am getting used to it quickly, and I don't think it's going to be an issue for me.
The Aspen has space for the FMA at the top of the PFD, but for some reason it didn't work out that way between Garmin and Aspen. Until that changes, this setup needs an external annunciator panel, unless the GFC control head is mounted in the pilot's primary field of view.
Regards,
Martin
@@martinpauly thanks for your reply. I hope to get to Sun 'n' Fun this year so will discuss the idea of pilot selectable default behavior for the knobs with Aspen as see how the idea is received by them.
I will shortly have 4 knobs on my Twin Com you have six on your setup and as you say, as you get used to it, it becomes easier but I bet dedicated knobs would be more instinctive. I would go for Speed, Heading and Alt default behaviors if I could, matching a Boeing MCP (Airbus too come to think of it).
Hopefully meet you in Lakeland.
Best
Phil
Great discussion. Question:
What avionics setup(s) available to GA do you think would be the closest to emulating Boeing design philosophy? Especially the MCP, dual-cue flight director, and FMAs.
Is there a toggle on the Aspen PFD for dual-cue FD? I believe the Garmin 275 has it.
FMAs missing from the top of the Aspen is kind of a bummer too.
Now only if Garmin could get the GFC600 to do VNAV PTH 😆
With the triple Aspens, you still require the Garmin GI275 as a backup attitude indicator?
Legally, the GI-275 is not required. However, I feel comforted by the fact that one of my backups uses different hardware and different software, making it less likely that one mistake could take down all units (common mode error).
- Martin
Hi Martin, Do you miss your Avidyne at all?
Good question... Every now and then I run into something that I think was easier to do on the IFD. But I've also found things that in my opinion are handled better by the GTN. They are both excellent products. My decision to go with Garmin was based on achieving the best compatibility between the GPS and the autopilot.
- Martin
I have the pleasure of owning a A36 myself. Why the 78 gallons in your JPI verses 74 (37 usable x2)? I have a 1997, so something could have changed in model years.
It's not a change in model years. On paper, my tanks hold 74 gallons of usable fuel. In reality, mine hold a little over 80 gallons of usable fuel. I have elected to start the fuel totalizer closer to the actual usable fuel than the book number.
Regards,
Martin
Just curious how much a setup like that would set someone back
It's not cheap, though the actual price depends a lot on what avionics equipment you have. To get a meaningful number, talk to an avionics shop.
Regards,
Martin
I think it’s really sad Garmin won’t work with Aspen interfacing the Gfc 500 as well.
I wish that option existed, but it would be more complicated - because the "brain" of the GFC500 is a Garmin display. So now you have to integrate THREE things: the GFC500, the Aspen PFD, and one of several possible Garmin displays. Not as straightforward as with the GFC600.
- Martin
I hear you, my only option now is an Stec3100
i ask you curious.. how long you learn become ifr so far?
I've been flying for 38 years, and 25 years out of that IFR.
- Martin
What headset is that, looks a lot like a QT Halo but also not quite?
It's called "Axis Headset" - similar in style to the Halo, but a little more rugged. It sits better on my head, and the mic boom actually stays put (unlike with the Halo, where I had to adjust the mic all the time). It's my favorite headset these days!
- Martin
Turns out this conversation was really bad for my credit card balance.
I looked for it but didn’t see an autopilot scoreboard on the Aspen - was I missing it?
You were not missing it, Tim - for some reason, the Aspen does not show the autopilot modes of a Garmin GFC 600 even though it has the space for it available (black bar at the top of the screen). Instead, I have a separate Garmin annunciator panel above the Aspen PFD, though that's hard to see in the video.
Regards,
Martin
Okay, sweet with that then. I went the Dynon / Avidyne route in my V35B.
@@martinpauly Sweet set up with that dedicated annunciator panel - probably better than trying to get it all on the Aspen - that’s prime space. I went the Dynon/Avidyne route in my V35B. Hope to see you at the BeechBash. :Tim
At 10:48 you have garmin pilot showing a front, how is that done? that is incredibly cool!
That data comes to Garmin Pilot through XM Weather. The overlay is called “Sfc Features” in the app.
Regards,
Martin
That's pretty amazing, I didn't know XM gives that kind of information. It sounds like it may be worth the pay?
@@LiraNuna I think it's worth it, though I see the main benefit in having super-reliable and fast-updating (every 2.5 minutes everywhere, not just nearby) radar images.
So..... after short first flight.... was the wait worth it?
That's a tough question... because I know more than half the time was spent by the FAA, which took way more time than usual for the software approval. I am very happy with how everything turned out in the end, but I also know we should have gotten there in time for Oshkosh 2022.

flying to louisville? my home airport(s)
Hey Martin great update to your avionics, nice.
Can you explain how the Nav function differs from the GPSS mode practically? As the GPS is providing the navigation input, I’m not quite clear what differentiates the two. Do you still get the turn anticipation in Nav that GPSS provides? Also, does Nav change automatically to the ILS mode on intercepting the Localiser, or is manual switching still required at that stage via GPS CDI selection?
And lastly, does your new autopilot upgrade have a Glideslope coupled function, as you mentioned being a little high on the approach?
I’m curious about all this as I too have an Aspen Max set up, poor man’s dual screen only though with basic STEC 30 autopilot in our old Comanche. It does the business, but is a bit lacking in some of the higher functionality you’re getting to enjoy!
Let's start with how NAV mode USED to work, with analog autopilots, and even with my GFC 600 and the Aspen prior to the digital autopilot interface which just got certified between the two. In NAV mode, the autopilot follows the lateral deviation bar of a CDI or HSI - it responds to movements of the needle to the left and right, trying to keep it centered. That works alright for straight lines, including a localizer, a a VOR radial or a GPS-defined line. It does not work for things like holding patterns, procedure turns or any other curved leg - all the autopilot sees is the deviation bar. GPSS can be "faked" with the autopilot in heading mode and the help of an Aspen, G5 or similar HSI.
With the digital autopilot interface I just installed, the autopilot is much more aware of the details of the navigation source (or NAV source). It can apply different algorithms for localizer, VOR or GPS, because it knows what kind of signal it's tracking. When NAV mode tracks a GPS NAV source, the autopilot utilizes GPSS coming from the GPS navigator because it knows that is the most precise and most capable tracking it can do.
Switching between GPS and localizer NAV sources on an approach is not something the autopilot commands, but the GPS (or the pilot can do it manually). The autopilot will simply start tracking a different signal when told to do so.
The GFC 600 absolutely does couple to the ILS glide slope or LPV glide path.
The STEC 30 is certainly a big help on long flights, but it lacks many of the advanced features of a modern, digital autopilot.
Regards,
Martin
Thank you, great answer.
Why marry Aspen and Garmin rather than install G1000 NXI?
Why not install a G1000NXI in my Bonanza? Well, for starters because there is no such thing for retrofitting a Bonanza. And even if it existed, I would then be stuck with the highly-integrated instrument panel with little ability to make any changes in the future.

Gruss,
Martin

Is there an abnormal Airbus? The regular Airbuses we have are a big enough of a pain sure they aren't considering buying abbie normal Airbuses.
Sooner or later they had to incorporate Siri like commands.
They can come in handy!

22:23 not sure if I would be so chilled out by 250 ft vertical separation. I guess climbing a bit to give yourself a bit more room wouldn't be the worst course of action here.
That "-25" means the traffic was 2,500 feet below me. Good enough to chill in my book.

@@martinpauly Ah! “25 hundred below” seems to be not really intuitively understandable for me.
@@RubenKelevra In the Flight Levels the last two zeros are left off, FL 250 is 25,000' I believe that's where this convention comes from.
@@tedsaylor6016 No, that's something different. It's "flightlevel 2 5 0" or "down to two fifty".
Martin just uses two digit numbers with hundred. That's just a non-standard way of regular talk. So it's e.g. nine-hundred below 1000 and e.g. eleven-hundred above 1000.
But if you're not used to that you can missread that speak and assume he's talking about numbers below 1000, instead of above.
You know that from the 1800s, 1900s etc.
In German that's also still common to hear, but I'm glad to report that it's slowly dying out - I always hated it. There's no advantage of using it and speakers just use it apparently to "sound different".
@@RubenKelevra No, look at the display @ 22:38 it slows the target climbing "^" and "-26" or -2600' below you. Its the standard to display relative ADS-B traffic altitude - at least for Foreflight and Garmin equipment. OK, maybe if Martin verbalized "25 below" that might be a little sinful - but everybody knows -25 on the display is no-problemo.
26:00 "an airbus" ... Well, that's a manufacturer of quite some different aircrafts. 🙄
Pretty standard from ATC. If it’s not an A32X they’ll say “Heavy Airbus 330/350”

I would grin too if I was on a flight path to CHOO CHOO
