Thanks for sharing , i usually rub bicarb onto the coin which works wonders however if you might prefer a less abrasive method you can get a small pan or baking tray lay a piece of tin foil on the tray or pan fill with boiling water from a kettle and put the tray or pan on a hob keep it at a gentle rolling boil then place the coin on the tin foil and add the bicarb on top of the coin , same thing happens very eggy smell but does the job. And you don't touch the coin at all.

I read about this in a hammered coin book. I tear two pieces of foil and spit a jolly good glob on one piece of foil and sandwich the coin and very gently aggravate it between the foil. Both sides done at once. If you go too far they look too shiny and a bit false. If you clean too much, you can add a bit of character back by boiling an egg and putting a coin in a bag with slices of it. The sulphur from the egg transfers to the coin and hey presto, you have a bit back on if needs be.

Heard of this method but not seen it in action. Chemically the black tarnish on silver is silver sulphide. Aluminium is a much more reactive metal than silver so will break down the silver sulphide. It sounds like that some hydrogen sulphide is released which smells like rotten eggs. The role of saliva or water and some friction will remove the layer of aluminium oxide on the foil and the reaction between the silver sulphide and aluminium will cause some heat. (The reaction of magnesium powder and silver nitrate is spectacular and is initiated with a drop of water) I found this reference to cleaning silver from the V and A . www.vam.ac.uk/content/journals/conservation-journal/issue-18/tarnishing-of-silver-a-short-review/ I enjoy your videos thanks Kris.

sorry to say thats hog wash that method, firstly why use spit? explain please? secondly why rub the coin when its a chemical reaction between the silver corrosion...the black bits...lol(what you call muck) and the water/tin foil...thats why it heats up, your damaging the coin by creating friction when rubbing it(scratching the surface....) why would you want to get into the background detail, the hole point of that method is to "burn" the top layer of silver corrosion off the top of the detail and the black back round would only make the coin look better, and the detail more pronounced...
    WHY USE SPIT.....PMSL...
check out my latest video, i do a demo of this about 6 min 30 sec in.....i only wish that my hammered was blacker to start with to show how well it works....:-)

    • @Addictedtobleeps
      @Addictedtobleeps  Před 7 lety +1

Using Aluminium foil is the BEST method available. When silver
tarnishes, it combines with sulphur and forms silver sulphide (Ag2S).
Silver sulphide is black. When a thin coating of silver sulphide forms
on the surface of silver, it darkens the silver. The silver can be
returned to its former lustre by removing the silver sulphide coating
from the surface. There are two ways to remove the coating of silver
sulphide (i.e. the tarnish). One way is to remove the silver sulphide
from the surface using a polish, and rubbing the tarnish off to produce a
lustre (DO NOT USE THIS METHOD - this method removes some of the
silver). The other method is to reverse the chemical reaction and reduce
silver sulphide back into silver. Get a piece of aluminium foil 1" x 2"
and fold in half. Open the fold and place the wet coin (Spit is good)
inside the foil. Close the fold and gently press so that the image of
the coin is recognisable through the aluminium. Leave for about 1
Minute. A chemical reaction will take place which will give off a bad
egg smell - this is Hydrogen Sulphide (i.e. the sulphur has been stolen
from the silver sulphide, which is now just silver again). In the
reaction, the silver sulphide reacts with the aluminium metal. Aluminium
is oxidized to aluminium oxide (Al2O3 - this is why the aluminium is
eaten up) and the silver in silver sulphide is reduced back to silver
      metal.
I have never ruined one Hammered coin using this method. If you rub very, very gently.
PS if you're going to come at me so aggressively in the comments section, dont bother promoting your video.
      Cheers.

thats quite a good descriptive instruction for doing the method, shame you didn't follow it...lol its basically a more detailed version of what i said... there is no talk of rubbing the coin like you do in that description that you have cut and pasted as a response( i wasn't born yesterday..lol)
also you didn't say WHY spit is a good ingredient to use? over just plain tap water? why dont you try just TAP water next time and wet the coin and just follow that comment you left...just hold the coin in the tin foil "shiny side" and allow it to do its thing(with no rubbing) then wipe with a clean cloth when done...
spit is ok in the field if your stuck in a pinch and you have some foil on your person, and you cant wait to get it home for an ID...
aggressive comment? what? lol im genuinely concerned about your video and the content, also with the large following you have, and how many hammered coins will be cleaned badly.... theirs no aggression here, i asked questions and im high lighting the points that concern me in relation to the content... ok the opening line was a bit off...lol but your a big boy, and im sure you can take it...lol yes shouldn't have wrote the opening like i did, i agree...and i can see how it may have looked..( i apologize)
as far as promoting my channel, i dont and id thank you if you didn't also...im not interested in subs or views, my channels a video diary of my metal detecting finds, a diary i can look back on and enjoy watching my self... im not interested in being popular...:-)
if i was, i have bigger you tube friends than most to promote me, ask them, they will say i always say dont promote me in any fashion...so what im saying is that my comment wasn't for affect and was posted for genuine reasons...
ive done a full silver cleaning video, and i had the same thing as this, people commenting saying its wrong and your doing that wrong, the truth of the matter is, that doing a silver cleaning video and there being so many methods out there, and the general ignorance of our fellow man, its only going to generate people thinking that your method is rubbish compared to theirs... its a mine field when doing videos on silver cleaning videos...
i get that your trying to help people with posting the video, i really do with being in the same boat...
i wanted to do two videos on "the beginners guide to the xp deus and the ctx" but knowing what people are like i choose not to, you try and help people and they chuck it back in your face..lol like silver cleaning videos... unless someone has a valid reason for being negative about the content like i believe i have with your video....i dont say things for affect...
thinking i should have said nothing at all and rarely do.... but i felt i needed to...
no hard feelings by the way on my part, i genuinely watch all your videos when uploaded, as i think your channels really good and that your a nice guy, i watched a video the other day of yours about the love tokens and the reason you gave about the coins being defiled, and i was very impressed as i didnt know the reason as to why, so i was chuffed that i learnt the reason behind it, so good information in your videos also....so i wouldn't rubbish your videos just for the sake of it, its not my style...
anyways.. dont take the hump feela...:-D and good luck to you on your next hunt..:)

Sorry mate, I must have taken it the wrong way. Had a few problems with trolls recently lol
I was always told spit. I'm guessing it's because a lot of the old fellas who taught me so much mostly did their 'cleaning' on the field. They all carry a bit of foil with them. I was always under the impression that the amylase in saliva has a chloride ion with mixes with the metal oxide, producing an exothermic reaction, which creates the hydrogen Sulphite...which causes the eggy smell.
In short, it does a little more than water.
But I could be wrong. I'm no Walter White, lol. I'll leave this all up here though, so people can read through our comments, as it may help them.
You're right though, there is no need for rubbing really.

    • @TOMMYTURBOTREASURES
      @TOMMYTURBOTREASURES Před 7 lety +1

there is always a need for rubbing, but in the bedroom department rather than cleaning coins...pmsl
i swear by the tap water, if anything it reacts more...ive had coins burn through the foil, it doesnt damage the coin(much) (i added the much for the you tube chemical masters...)...but it is a one hit thing...you dont get the reaction twice so i think its best to wait till you get back home and use tap water, get a big reaction with the tap water making sure your pressing gently on the full surface on the coin, so black is removed evenly on the surface of the coin.... one hit, even coverage, resulting in one nicely cleaned up hammered for the collection..:)
trolls that rubbish peoples efforts are the worst, people with no imagination or creativity in anyway shape or form that sit behind a keyboard thumbing down peoples videos as they get a kick out of it, its the repugnant nature of human beings its sad to say...i personally dont care about thumbs down or thumbs up or comments, but i can appreciate the frustration it can cause when your doing videos for free for the viewing of the public, and someones tarnishing it by being an asshole...lol it feels like they have the right to rubbish your efforts and to judge your video doesnt it, that you almost have to apease the horrible specimen behind the keyboard as your catering for his viewing pleasure...NOT IN MY BOOK...;-D i had one guy "telling" me to shorten my intro as its a problem him waiting for the loading time when skipping the intro on his ipad....(he can go boil his head for me)
ive had thumbs down after leaving comments on your channel, witch is nice...pmsl. doesn't bother me but i noticed it;-P i was laughing this morning actually because of it...hehe. im thinking they were thinking that i was troll or something...pmsl notice i didnt thumb your video down, even tho i had issue with it....:-) its not my style, i know the work that goes into making videos also so i dont thumb down anyone's efforts, i encourage people to try... i even sent a gopro off to a lad the other day as he didn't have a camera fit for purpose, on the condition that he started making videos for youtube...:-) cos im nice and all that...hehe.
