How To Clean & Straighten Hammered Coins - My Guide

- In this Special video I will be showing you how I go about cleaning and straightening damaged hammered coins you find while out metal detecting.
Please note - I understand cleaning coins is not for everybody and if not done correctly can really damage a coin however I think you will agree that the end result is far better then its found condition and will make a great displayable piece for your collection.
The coin used is an Elizabeth I silver hammered sixpence which I personally found in one of my previous videos.

The process of annealing is a delicate one indeed, though it has certainly improved and preserved the coin. The cleaning method is acceptable considering the initial state it original appeared in and thankfully the toning left behind actually complimented it also. As an avid collector of Tudor hammered coins I would certainly recommend your method here, it was a great video and lesson for all. Many thanks.

Jeez, I thought you’d brought a tube of Anusol out 😁😁. With you all the way on this. It’s for you to enjoy. It has no great value as a coin, relatively speaking. I’ve always straightened and cleaned mine, and I still own and enjoy them all.

I really enjoyed your video and it was as ever, beautifully shot and the pacing and emphasis was spot-on. Like yourself I have a few bent hammered coins but have always been too scared to try and straighten them. I have dabbled with the old spit and tin foil method of cleaning coins, which is quite magical in itself, a form of crude electrolysis. Sadly 1 hammered Eddy penny just snapped in half, illustrating how brittle and delicate the thinnest coins are. The coin I most want to straighten is a gold Henry VIII angel, which I found rolled-up into almost a tube like appearance, but have 'bottled-out' from tackling it. Would you consider taking it on as a paid commission job? I understand the risks involved but would fully understand if you would rather not. Nevertheless your video has emboldened me to try and straighten a medieval groat which is only very slight bent, and its a thick coin, so probably pretty strong. Keep the videos coming as your presentations are first-rate.
