That's the beauty of Contra difficult yet every time you die you feel as though you could do better and want to go back.

They didn't complain but there was a gradual increase to 3d fps from 2d side scrollers/arcade games, obviously, it didn't go from NES to n64, smart guy.

saxman642 was born 1994, I would regularily beat levels in Contra with my brother at my grandma's house.I only introduce my 9 and 12 year old nephews to hardcore videogames, none of that pansy hold your hand crap their friends play, they could get past at least the first level.
saxman642 Not completely true. My cousins and I were all born 1999 or after and we all have played and know Contra. Granted, we could only get past the second level at most but we still knew about it.

Chris Jenkins I'm 22 yrs old and the console I used way back when I was 6 yrs old was nintendo family computer... there's no manual together with those plug in games so i basically I use my common sense when I played it.

I played and beat it when it first came out, before the Konami code became common knowledge. No easy internet faqs back then. Most of the kids in my neighborhood could eventually do it. Using the code shifted the game from challenging to time attack. Beating it wasn't a question anymore. It was now how fast you could do it since you had more wiggle room to barrel ahead with less caution.

80's gen here, I think the problem these new kids have is that everything is spoon fed to them in today's games. I'm talking about auto save check points and unlimited continues/respawning.
Sacrilege83 You do know why games from that period were so hard, right? If you hate on DLC and short games nowadays you have to realize that these games were so difficult because they were designed to suck up quarters at arcades and they had like 20 minutes of gameplay content.

+Sacrilege83 Yes, also, the games they play, they can take multiple hits and it's all fine. You need to dodge and take cover a lot in Contra.
Tips for Contra beginners. Tip 1: Read instruction manual to learn all the controls. Tip 2: Always be firing your gun. Tip 3: Stay together in 2 player mode in the scrolling stages. Tip 4: Look up the Konami Code, you'll need those extra lives. Special Note: These tips DO NOT guarantee beating the game due to some BS moments in later stages.

The difficulty of this game is not *that* hard. The real problem is that developers gimp games now so that you can beat it without pressing a button. Games like this one are considered a challenging and strategic game. You can't just run and gun. By the way, what is this Battletoads everyone is mentioning? I have never heard of it.

I've gone through and finished the game as an adult, but as an 8 year old I never did finish up TMNT. By the time I got past the seaweed I'd used up most of my turtles' health so level 3 always kicked my ass.
Also, yeah I forgot about that one pseudo-jump.

Big Boss To be fair, you don't often die by 1 shot, lol. Unless shot in certain places, like right in your forehead, or heart. 1 shot can kill you, but not often instantly.

Noctis Caelum Surprisingly the forehead one is half way a myth. You can lose half your brain and be fine.
It's more getting shot in the forehead is likely also going to hit dead center so both sections of the brain are damaged, fall inward to the nervous system's brain stem and completely sever all functions in your body, including being able to be awake, or rip your blood vessels.
The nervous system one is also instant.

These guys are wimps. Back in my childhood me and my brothers didn't even think of Contra as "hard". We simply learned the controls, watched out for enemies and bullets, timed our progression and shooting and beaten the game. Make them play Metroid. Now THAT is hard.

darkservantofheaven After you beat the boss on the 5th level who i think is actually even harder than the last boss combine all the frustration hard parts in all other levels, combine the difficulty and multiply it by 5 also you barely get any weapons and most of them are just the shurikens (which are useless in the 6th level). Oh and if you die on the boss you go back to level 6.1 not to the last checkpoint and there are 3 final bosses at least if you beat 1 it stays beaten. So in conclusion all the things you do in the first 5 levels is basically a tutorial for level 6.

I actually find a pattern between the 2 hardest games i ever played. Ghosts and goblins and ninja gaiden, both have 6 levels, (well gng you have to replay the game but still those are the same level) coincidence? I think not.

Man, watching this brought back all that muscle memory I had stored away from the hundreds of hours I pored into this game.
Yes, old games are hard and don't care if you ever beat them. New games tend to want to tell a story and usually want you to beat them.
Jeff Minshall You do know why games from that period were so hard, right? If you hate on DLC and short games nowadays you have to realize that these games were so difficult because they were designed to suck up quarters at arcades and they had like 20 minutes of gameplay content.
Jeff Minshall old games (and dark souls) want you to practise the game and get better with time and beating the game (or even just a level) in an old game is then extremely satisfying
most of the games today have no challenge and even no story.
That's why people back then are tougher than these kids.

ferovenarkiko kuchiki actually the 1st time I played it I beat the 1st boss and proceeded to the middle of the 2nd stage. I only used my common sense, shoot anything that's in your way, dodge the bullets and foes and those weird saucers floating will give you armaments if you try to shoot em.
If you're going to do Co-op play....it needs to be Battletoads.

I played Contra as a kid in the early 90s. I can't even guess how many hours I put into the game. Watching these kids play was very frustrating.

fhoplist Could you imagine them playing Battletoads? I could clear Contra back in the day without the Konami code, but battletoads always wrecked me. Only game on the NES I could never finish.
I think when I was 8, I gained enough experience points that I somehow got equipped with wizard magic and was somehow able to stand toe to toe with some of these games.
fhoplist I played all of these thanks to a cousin who gave me his old NES, when he got the SNES, and I'm only a 21yo... but I just feel really old watching them playing and failing so hard.

Stage 1 and 2, that is, so please do not generalize. 3 is medium, 4 is medium easy, 5 is harder(the truck thingies and the grenades), 6 is like 5,(fire), 7 is a bit harder(final boss) and 8 is medium. Try contra 3. All of the stages are over 9000 hard.
