- "This week James and Mike play the beloved and nostalgic Contra!
Contra is one of the most known and remembered video games from the 8-bit era. The simple yet fun gaming mechanics attracted people of many demographics and ages and brought kids together to shoot out some bullets on the enemies! It went on to become a whole video game series, releasing new titles in the series on many different consoles following the NES.
In the original 8-bit Contra, you take control of two commandos that go by the names Bill "Mad Dog" Rizer and Lance "Scorpion" Bean. The premise of this game is to destroy the terrorist group called the Red Falcon Organization, whose plan is to take over the entire Earth! The games' story slightly varied from region to region, however - the Japanese version was set way in the future, taking place on a fictional "Galuga archipelago" that is near New Zealand. The North American version's manual states that it takes place on an unnamed South American Island, and the terrorist organization if changed to an alien entity. But keep in mind, no matter which version you play, you are sure to kick and shoot some alien ass!
It was released in 1987 and is a run-and-gun game, published by the company Konami. The most popular version of the game was released on the Nintendo Entertainment System, (called Probotector in Europe) and the simple layout of the controller was a perfect match with this game, Contra.
In this episode, James and Mike take a look at and play through Contra, and... with no infamous Konami Code, which, I'm sure we have all used at least one time or another, but they take a stab at playing through without it!

I love how calm James is and how Mike is the real life AVGN.
Mike's personality is way more in line with James' character than James' personality is, which is hilarious. Honestly, guys, watching you die and plan and die again was way more entertaining than watching two guys (who we know can get through the game) breeze through it with no problem. It was way more fun that way, we were all rooting for you rather than, "Yea. There he goes. Got the jump. Killed the guy. Did it again. Wow he's good." Keep it up, best J&M Monday yet.

Contra isn't as hard as it's cracked up to be, in my opinion.

If you have a big chuck of knowledge of 6502 MOS Assembly language, and know which oppcode does what, you can do hit, I think it is doable, but I don't see much of a point to do this.
I think as a mode b it would be a much better challenge than getting spread and just holding right and shoot.

I beat this as a kid without dying once, but i tried again after this video.... NO fucking way. used about 10 lives... We'll never quite be as quick and adaptable as we once were.
lol, maybe this comes down to how much time is healthy to spend playing the same game as an adult, vs doing it as a kid:-) It was ok that i played Contra every single day when i was 8, now its hard to justify a full playthrough when theres adult responsibility looming around every corner.
Yeah, well.. you almost seem to have a valid point here, if the game needed that much play to master. It's one of the easiest games I've played on the NES and I don't see how responsibility can also get in the way.

My uncle recently passed away and watching this reminds me of him... He introduced me to such classic games and I remember playing this for hours with him as a kid, and that's the reason I always find this game to be easy with two players... RIP miss you 😭

Few people tend to realize this, but the "R" powerup isn't actually a weapon: It boosts the speed of your bullets, no matter what weapon you have! IE: If you have a spreader and pick up an R, you now have a spreader with faster bullets! :O
I think most people would recognize it right after the machine gun drop is an R and makes the gun obviously shoot faster in the beginning of stage 1... They couldn't have made it more obvious imo

REAL reactions and REAL frustration that we can all relate to, with NO acting, NO editing and showing your skills live (excellent attempt BTW)! Loved it. The episode is awesome. So much natural. It's really like when we played it with friends playing such a difficult awesome game. The only difference from back in the days, James don't have his Mom getting down and shouting to be more quiet while playing.

When I was a kid this was an epic challenge. I can still remember the feeling when I first beat it!!! Went back some years ago to try it out and it's still super fun but it's not as hard now as when I was a kid. I eventually managed to get to a point where I could beat it multiple times without a continue.

I am the youngest of One brother and thats all you need to "flip" this game(Banded Brothers in VideoGames). In this game it showed the person you are and how a team can accomplish one of the greatest video games of all time. I admit it was rare to encounter a solo soldier(Gamer) who passed the game without the code. Still, you are a cool person James to play with Mike, and let him tag along in the Contra Wars.Keep up the good work. Thank you.

man, i could feel the pain mike was going through from my childhood, even though i didnt play shooters.... i did do other platformers, which also required jumping and watching the enemies at the same time

how many times i smashed the strong (compared to these days) controllers against the wall or on the ground (and still worked for 100%...... but i was a kid, so yeah)
Loved playing this game with my friends back in the day, required real team work and when you did beat the game with no codes it felt good.
I memorized where EVERYTHING was as a kid and could finish the game without dying. Played it again a few months back in years, and for some reason I STILL remembered everything. And Yup, can still finish it without dying.
I want to see part 2 where they get to the end and beat it! They were so close!

This is (in my opinion) one of the best episodes of James & Mike Mondays. Mike getting angry is one of the most fun things about the show. (I don't mind James & John...but it's nowhere near as fun a show as James & Mike Mondays. I hope Mike comes back.)
If this game was made today there would've been atleast three "amazing" plot twists with long "emotional" dialogue cutscenes in this video.
It would potentially also offer them to skip the level or become invincible for an unlimited duration because they had game over three times.

This game was always fun for me. Watching you guys play like this reminds me of the old days. When people played together, hanging out, cracking jokes, supporting one another, etc. Nowadays people play online cursing at other kids just for minor mistakes they make. And like N00bdestr0yer11111 said, kids need to learn to play games like this before some modern FPS game, and learn the value of teamwork.

Fun fact: The Japanese version of this game has little cutscenes in between missions. They don't really add all that much to the game but I thought it was pretty neat.
They also added moving scenery and landscapes. Such as windblown palm trees in the first stage. Snowstorms in stage 5. And also moving body parts in stage 8. And it's all used in a chip in the famicom called the VRC2 which the nes didn't have. I guess the cutscenes and background effects were not in nes version due to manufacturing costs.

The chip was in the cartridge, not in the console itself. These chips are called "mappers" and all but the simplest NES games used one. And the Japanese version was the original console port, the US release was stripped down.
I'm not really sure why they did that. Could be they just wanted to make the game cheaper to produce. But also in Japan, anybody could make a Famicom cart, but in the US (and elsewhere) Nintendo tried to make sure that only they could produce NES carts. So Konami may have simply not had the option of using the VRC2 chip they'd used in the Japanese version of Contra.
I never really noticed the scenery stuff you mentioned, I'll have to find some time to play the game again and check it out.

Pro-tips for newbies who think that they (James & Mike) played this game like bosses (while they really didn't, at all):
1. You can destroy falling stones easily, there's no point in avoiding them. They give quite a nice amount of score. There is actually an easily abusable exploit during which you can gain as many lives as you want in the waterfall stage, while not cheating. There's a spot where you can basically stand underneath a hole, stone will come falling right above of you, you can stand there forever and just shoot at it while it falls, destroying it before it reaches you, then another falling stone spawns immediately at the same spot, so you can basically just stand there and keep on collecting score forever, gaining lots of lives without being attacked by any running guys or other shit. It does consume some time to get a live by this method, but it's not very long, it's a great and super-easy way to stock up on extra lives right at the beginning of the game AND without any cheating. Good for noobs.
2. You can kill scuba divers. Better do that, than to run through while dodging their shots. You can attack them only when they emerge, so it's always better to trigger them appearing first (they'll never emerge from water unless you trigger them), and then either wait out for them to emerge again and shooting them from a distance, or shooting at them while aiming right straight down (preferably during a jump), because their explosives don't hurt until they hit the ground and explode, thus you can pretty much shoot at any scuba diver while he shoots at you, as long as you're jumping at the right moment and shooting right down at him while avoiding incoming explosion (remember that you CAN control your character while he's in mid-air).
3. R means "Rapid". It speeds up your shooting frequency by x2 times of normal.
4. You can combine R and S, which is basically THE best option in the entire game.
5. F ("Fire") only looks like shit at first, it's actually a very powerful type of shot - if you combine it with R you'll be able to kill absolute majority of bosses literally in seconds.
6. Yes, I'm a FUCKING NERD when it comes to things like these.
