The Action Max was made by Worlds of Wonder and released in 1987. It was an obscure video game console that used VHS tapes as its games! You had to own a VCR to play the tapes. And it came with a light gun (similar to the NES Zapper). There were only five games released for the system. Blue Thunder, Hydrosub: 2021, Sonic Fury, 38 Ambush Alley and The Rescue of Pops Ghostly! Rather late to the party here but this puts me in mind of the Captain Power series of VHS and even a show for a while that used the jets as light guns. Though in that it was always flashing red is target and flashing yellow was damage.

The oddness of the XBOne in the background was disconcerting, but I love how the episode ended with "Wanna play XBox One?" "No."
I used to have an Action Max when I was a kid. I used to cheat by shooting at the flashing circle in the bottom right corner (the one the sensor was placed over). Shooting that target would result in a hit that scored you points!
One interesting element that was overlooked in this video is the flashing circles over the good guys (Pops Ghostly and family or the unarmed dummies in .38 Ambush Alley); those would deduct you points from your score if shot at.
I love how that discussion on the supernatural just culminated in "We have decided... that apes *do* exist."

Hey, I didn't know what it was, either. That doesn't mean I'm old-school only (though I do love a lot of old-school games), it's just that I've never really gotten into Xbox at all. For me, Playstation does everything Xbox can do, except it does it more to my liking, Nintendo has the greatest number of exclusive titles that I love, and the computer fills in any gaps left over. There's never been a need for Xbox. ^^
In any case, he seems to have a wide knowledge when it comes to any gaming system. So the fact that people might think he doesn't know anything about Xbox One, seeing as though it is one of three only competing consoles of our time, baffles me. Of course he knows! =P

JMM episodes in a nutshell
There was a TV show around that same time, "Captain Power", that used the same concept. The toy was a space ship that also acted as a light gun. You could shoot on the ships on the screen, but they could shoot back, so you had to point the ship away to break line of sight. After enough hits, your pilot ejected and the game was over.
Moral of the story... VCR games from 1992 > Xbone.

This reminded me that there were a couple of attempts at using VHS/Betamax tapes for actual video game consoles, since they offered a lot more storage space than the early cartridges and could scan from one section to the next relatively fast, sort of like a smaller reel-to-reel magnetic tape. I think they all flopped in the prototype stage due to the huge production costs, since VHS players were still an expensive item at the time.
I totally forgot that my family had this until I saw this video! I dont remember if it broke quickly or we got tired of playing the same "video" game, but it definitely didn't last long. Thanks for the memories.

I had a friend who's mom would randomly buy him toys that were on clearance. I remember he got this in maybe 1991 or so. I remember we played it all of twice before we got bored with it. And we were poor kids that were easily impressed.

When I was little( in the 90's) my dad bought me something similar to this. I cannot remember what it was called, but it was basically a base with rockets, that if you fired the rockets at the screen(while the film was on) it would actually shoot down the vehicles on the screen( that wouldn't blow up until you fired the rockets). I still don't know how they did it, because I don't remember there being any wires going to the TV. I had it for a long time, but it finally broke somehow. =/
I had something like that. It was a mountain base. I also had the ship. The video had pink parts you'd fire at and the yellow ones would hurt your ship and base. I swear it was captain something. It was epic. Instill have that stuff in the attic.

Light guns do not work on LCD TV's. They only work on old CRT's, because they work by reading the CRT scan lines (via a sensor in the "gun"). These scan lines cannot be perceived by the human eye because they are too fast, but they are very very easy for a camera to see. This is the same effect that makes CRT's look weird when filmed. LCD's don't have these because they don't have a refresh rate. So the "gun" just sees nothing as if the TV were off if you try to use it with an LCD.

Loved how they didn't care to play Xbone or James hasn't seen the main screen for it and didn't know what it was lolz!! No one should know about the Xbone,.. just like the Wii ;)!!
