Ford discontinued the Ranger in 2012 hoping brand loyalty would lead to more F150 sales and insure the F series would remain #1. When Ford realized Ranger buyers were switching to GM and Toyota they realized they needed to bring back the Ranger. The 2.3 - 4 cylinder was the only engine offered to insure the new Ranger would not take sales away from the F150. If ford would have put the 2.7 - 6 cylinder Ecoboost in the Ranger it would have sold like crazy and taken F150 sales. The prime directive for any manufacturer should be market share and build what the consumer wants. The Board of Directors does not seem to understand this simple concept.

There are older models of the Ford Ranger that were well built, if an individual really MUST have one. However, it's near impossible to find an early model Ford Ranger in pristine condition and most of them are just beyond repair; so it's not for anyone, unless they have a lot of time and money in restoring the truck. In addition, some sellers who own their own Ford Rangers have grown too attached and sentimental; been in the family for decades, passed down from generation to generation, what have you.

I’ve always thought of it as a solid fairly reliable work truck but they’re selling it here is some millennial camping vehicle and for the money you have to put down to get one you might as well get an F150 with a V-8, even though the 2.3 L turbo is a fairly reliable engine long as you take care of it. But quite frankly if they did sell it with that diesel I would totally buy it with it and use it as a work truck

99 Suburban had the Mitchell seat, with a Taumel type single side recliner (rotary handle, with spring loaded tapered eccentric). Those seats had a bad habit of creeping back to a certain point, determined by the position of the eccentric. In addition, the attachment bolts to the seat base and back can loosen, which increases the chance of fatigue breakage. As if that wasn't bad enough, the seat back frame is made of tubular steel, and at the bottoms of the side tubes, they were slipped into a slightly bigger tube, with a couple tack welds holding them in. If you've ever noticed a bed like squeak coming from the seat, that's the culprit, tube in tube friction as the cause. As if that weren't bad enough, we at the recliner supplier (Dirty Harry White, an engineer, and I) called the Mitchell seat the "lawn chair," due to the flimsy seat back frame. If I bought one of those Suburbans, I'd go to the auto parts yard, and buy a pair of real seats. BUWAHAHA.
