A railway apprenticeship lays a solid foundation, but personal pride in a job well done raises you above the rest. I always look forward to your videos, Max. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks . They had machines there that no other company could afford to have . I would have loved to have finished my apprenticeship there , but moved to Australia & finished it here , all job shop type work .
Those were some really cool tools Max. I really liked the line boring mod for the lathe. That could be so useful. I love to see more of your large machinery repair.
Hi Harold . That's ok , we all modify other's ideas ! That's how the world goes around . I still try and watch your live stream , but it's on when i just leave for work ! Cheers .
There were so many gems in this video it's mind boggling. I stopped when you were showing the Tom Lipton canfering tool to get my coffee and couldn't believe that I was only half way through the video. Thanks for taking the time to do this video Max, it was very interesting.
G’day Max. Beautifully made tools mate, I too was a railway apprentice and the torture of the first few months hand making jigsaw puzzles out of steel, I was 16, “what have I got myself into “ but like you I kept those projects and when you showed the plumb bob I thought hey! I made one too and still have it, thanks for another trip down memory lane. Cheers Peter
Hi Peter, totally relate, my 'fitting' module of my apprenticeship was the same deal, we had to file a 12" long 5/8" square out of a piece of 3/4 round bar. It had to be flat, square, parallel, straight and dimensionally correct. I got top marks and following assessment by the apprentice master, he promptly put it in a vice and whacked it with a big hammer to stop me passing it on to oe of the other lads to use, I nearly cried! Cheers, Jon
G’day Max. An excellent video mate and some really nice shop made tools. Congratulations on winning the Aaron Engineering 1K sub giveaway. My wife and I are watching your video now and she laughed when she saw the mentos lollies 🍬. Dianne was surprised that I didn’t eat them also 🤣. The robot man is a little key ring holder. Cheers Max. Cheers Mate . Your going to have to give a demo on the emery paper thing ! I can see at least 7 bits of useful tooling that can be made from it !!! Cheers .
Gday Max, as I’ve said before there’s is always something to take away from all your videos, the tooling you’ve made to bloody awesome, the tramping tool is a brilliant idea and the ball turner is a work of art, your a good teacher in my opinion throughout your videos, thanks for sharing your tooling mate, Cheers
@@swanvalleymachineshop I did brew my own beer back in the 70s. God awful stuff. My wine was drinkable. I learned that poor wine could be made into drinkable drape brandy, Who knew?
Thanks for sharing your SHOPMADETOOLS. I'm a recent subscriber. It looks like I need to take a look at your early videos. Appreciated the large machine photos. I had the privilege of visiting BHP's Nickel West mine back in 2008. It's about 500 miles out from Perth. The size of the equipment is hard to fathom unless you're standing next to it.

Nice job Max, another enjoyable addition to the video library, some damn fine R8 tooling there. Looking forward to seeing you using your shaper, I am sure I am going to pick up a few pointers on those videos.
Max, your one of my favorite machinists on CZcams. I think I found your channel through your ball turning attachment vids (best one on CZcams 👍😁👍) and been watching ever since 😊. Keep inspiring and keep up the great work mate! Cheers!
I very much enjoyed the videos where you made many of these tools, and you definitely have something to share there - your tools are "top shelf" as it is said! Very kind of Emma to share the collets with you too, she's a very cool person.
Thanks . I will email you soon , there is a company that has a great range of tooling for truck & machine repair . Some of it , they put dimensions as well as the diagrams . Cheers .
Thanks for showing your tools. Can't wait to see your shaper in action. I can't believe you have been holding out on us with it. I imagine it has been in storage though.
👍 wow, I have watched a lot of your videos because I remember quite a few of these tools. I started watching the R-8 tooling and binge watched the entire series. I loved it and the ball turner.
Nice lifting pedestal thingy for changing the slewing ring on the 385. I did a 345 a few years back and used wood cribbing and 50 ton Power team jacks and the boom as needed worked OK. Nice selection of tools. I so enjoyed the R-8 tooling series you did awhile back. That was fun. Cheers from New Hampshire USA
Had 2 100t jacks each side at the rear & the 50t overhead crane lifting the stick ( fully extended ) . One of the boom cylinders i removed & replaced with a solid link . Worked well , not sure why the Cat w/shop manual says to have the upper structure at an angle to the track frame . If i do another one i would probably have it at 90 deg . Cheers .
that inside sphere is still an act of wizardry mate, i don't care what you say !! but i think we need to make a nice stainless steel cabinet to display all your shop made tooling for the new workshop.
Hello Max, I can't believe I was not already subscribed to you. What a great collection and wonderful history of shop made tools. I really like the story of scalloping knobs like your great grandad. I learned filing and a lot of mechanical knowledge from mine. That line boring jig and head tramming device are awesome ideas. I can see why you won. All the best! Eddie

Some nice looking tools Max. I think the insulated sleeve around the beer bottle I saw in the background may be the most important tool in the shop. Especially over here right now as we are having one heat wave after another. A few weeks ago the village of Lytton, B.C., on the west coast, set a new Canadian record of 49.6 C. (I think that's getting into your Western Desert temperature range). The next day nearly every building in town burned to the ground after a forest fire swept through it. I'm looking forward to the fall. What is the name of the beer you drink in the clear bottles? Ken
The insulated sleeves are very important for sure ! We call them ''Stubby Coolers '' as our most common beer bottle is called a Stubby , 330 & 375 ml bottle . Cheers Ken .
@@swanvalleymachineshop We call them a "Beer Cozy" after the ubiquitous "Tea Cozy", a knitted cover that most Canadian grandmothers used to put on their tea pots to keep them warm. When I was a kid our beer bottles were called stubbies because they had a short neck. In the mid eighties we went back to the "Longneck" bottles. Returning my dad's empties and getting the deposit was my main source of income when I was young. Ken

Fantastic tooling Max. For the knackered r8 to er40 adapter, just chop the r8 and you can chuck the round in the 3 or 4 jaw for repeat collet work.
