- In this video I wanted to share with you a little adventure I had recently with black and white photography and our Hatsuyuki, and I hope it inspires you to get out there and explore nature with your camera, even as it gets colder.
The weather has been weird this year and I’ve been patiently waiting for a real first snowfall, but the wait is finally over for our Hatsuyuki, or the first snowfall of a new winter...

I love how you explain what you intended to capture in your photos. My favourite is the deer, but they were all great!
Thank you very much!
wabi-sabi nature style 😍👌
Nice!
Loved it and sent it to many friends. Thank you!
Awesome, thank you!
Fantastic!
Many thanks!
Hi Josh,
The shot of the water absolutely captured the essence of the rock garden!
Unrelated to hatsuyuki, but
I was wondering if you have any opinions on pruning trees into Niwaki, I have some Alberta spruce that I was going to turn into mulch… but maybe instead of that I will prune them into Niwaki. Your videos help me with some of the seasonal blues.
I'm glad they help you through the season. I know it can be a tough time for some people so I just try to highlight the positives. For the Alberta spruce people love to spiral them but that doesn't really fit the Japanese garden aesthetic. Have a look at some alberta spruce bonsai pics for ideas. In general, I would probably keep its natural shape but really get in there and thin out a lot of the branches so you can see through the tree a lot more. A staggered branch airy look.
It looks a lot like where I live in central NY! Would numbering the photos detract from the poetic vibe of your photography videos? I especially liked the shots @ 3:57 and 5:55, and the deer, 8:33 but I really enjoyed all of them. The haiku is a fitting touch.
Central NY is beautiful! I'm right nearby in Western NY. Thanks for the input, I'll try to play around with some type of numbering system.
