Winter Photography in a Private Ancient Woodland

- The first snowfall of the winter and I decided to have a brief wander in a private woodland of ancient oak trees - some of which will be around 700 years old. The flat grey light and limited time made things a little challenging but that's always part of the fun and I learnt a lot about the location that will help me on future visits. I'm very fortunate to have access to this woodland for my photography, which is something that I also talk about in this episode. Expect future videos from this location as I'm sure it has some delights to offer. I've also included a quick preview of some photos I made during my first ever visit to another local woodland recently. Despite my lack of knowledge of the area, it was a productive afternoon in conditions that were well suited to the location's species and character.

I just cannot get over the amount of spirit in Meg... it's like it's a daily celebration of life. LOVE that dog. Wet, pasty snow!! Awesome!! Look at it on those killer trees it's on... wow! So wild the corkscrew effect of the bark.....I DO have to wonder if Meg thinks you're a bit daft talking to nobody all the time... : ) With no disrespect to all the other landscape photographers out there... SImon, you make everyone else look like beginners.. Truly stunning work. Those 42mp photos are just plain beautiful.
Very kind again Dave. Many thanks :) Haha, yes Meg just loves being out in the woods - so many smells and things to explore :)
Simon, another great video. Your videos have a calmness about them, no hype but very thoughtful and patient. Those same qualities are also reflected in the photos. Then there's Meg. The way she checks out the composition, while you're talking, is wonderful. I'd love to see her photos if she had a camera.
Thank you very much, Clyde :) Ha, she's chief seeker ;-)
I live in the far north where the snow covers the ground from sometime in october into may. I have to admit that even with all that time to experiment i still struggle to find ways to be creative with so much white.
Meg is a great companion. My last sled dog passed away this fall after nearly 19 years. He persevered through recurring old rolling dog syndrome, a severed acl, deafness and near blindness. He walked 6 miles on his last day, but it was a few years since he could run and jump around like meg.
Thanks again for a wonderful Vlog. I love the last bit of information you gave about asking permission to go on private land. I have never been denied access when asking to go on private property. Got some unique shots because of it. Sadly, many do not ask and there is a growing anymosity between land owners and hikers/ photographers in some areas here in Nova Scotia. All that could have been avoided had they only asked permission or at least respected the land and not treat it as thier own private party ground and leave their garbage behind.
On another note, looking at how you photographed these wonderful old Oak trees has given me a renewed motivation to get out in the woods once again when it's snowing.
Many thanks for your kind comment. Yes, it's a real problem when people have a self entitled and disrespectful attitude. Litter is infuriating - it makes no sense.
Meg is such a delight to watch, such a happy spirit
Really enjoyed that, Simon. I especially liked that leaning tree with the old wall. Beautiful. Good to see Meg having so much fun too.
Yes, I was about to say the same thing about the leaning tree. Meg is certainly having a fantastic time in the snow.
Hi Simon,
You are master of your craft and you are my huge inspiration around woodland photography. Your videos teach me and educate me to see things which I didn`t see before when I was in woodland so I`d like to say big thank you for your amazing content .
Thank you very much for your kind comment Adam. Much appreciated.
Very nice. Love winter and snow photoshoots. Thanks for sharing this journey with us.
I just watched you for the first time and I’m hooked. Beautiful pictures and Meg oh she’s Adorable. Can’t wait til your next video. Thank You!
Welcome Candi! Hope you enjoy past and future videos. Many thanks :-)
Wonderful conditions Simon and you definitely made the most of it with your well thought out compositions. 👍👍
Many thanks Ian :)
Very cool and pretty photographs. Your conclusion at end of the video is absolutely spot on. Thanks for sharing your winter wonderland adventure. Cheers from the North Cascades, WA State, USA!
Much appreciated, thank you!
There are many great vlogs out there on CZcams. But when I watch yours I feel an overwhelming desire to grab my camera and get outside to take pictures. You are so inspirational and your photos are exceptional.
Thank you for your generous comment Peter. Great to hear :)
Love it.... wished everyone was as happy as Meg 🐕
beautiful images Simon !! Meg is really fantastic in the snow.
thanks for sharing, ciao!
Many thanks Luigi :-)
Love the condition and the muted contrast of tree trunk amidst snow on trees.
Excellent images. My favorites was the very first image and the last bonus image.
Much appreciated. Thank you!
Very calm and peaceful video.
Great job.
Simon, This was wonderful and that snow was beautiful. I love the quietness that happens during a falling snow. Beautiful images as well! Cheers!
Always appreciated. Thank you Nick!
Particularly fine video - beautiful photos made with such care and attention and with a grateful spirit
Always appreciated Howard. Thank you :)
So jealous of the area you get to shoot in. Our woodlands here in the US just aren't as stunning. Also love watching your 4 legged companion enjoying the countryside.
Looks like a blast to shoot! good stuff man.
Your work is inspiring and breathtaking. Honestly, I am envious of the land you get to wander.
Very nice trip to the snowy woods, thanks
Thank you for sharing this video. Woodland photography in the snow is beautiful..
WOW I just want to step into that first image. Stunning on all levels.
What an incredible location Simon, so lucky to have access. Don’t get these conditions living here in Australia 🇦🇺. Simply beautiful scenery.
Thanks for sharing again Simon, and thank you to the landowner also.
Stay safe.
Just beautiful photography. Thank you. Looking forward to your on-line presentation to The Conservancy/Cuyahoga Valley National Park here in Ohio, soon.
Many thanks Rick! Looking forward to it :)
Love the snow scenes, Simon, especially the last three.
Great images and great video with seriously spectacular subjects. I agree with your last part, very good.
Always much appreciated Antonio :-)
New to your channel which I really enjoyed and have subscribed looking forward to catch up on previous tutorials. Loved your images , we have a had beautiful winter this year great for photography
Welcome along. Glad you enjoyed this episode and hope you enjoy the others too :)
I love the way Meg sits there just looking ahead as if she is admiring your composition!
Simon, such amazing images. Infact , I loved them all & Meg as always is such a delight to watch.
I’ve just discovered you Simon ..absolutely stunning ..I’m going to enjoy this journey with you ..thank you .x
Welcome along Janet. Hope you enjoy past and future videos. Many thanks!
@@SimonBaxterPhotography aww really appreciate that Simon ..keep inspiring ..x
Loved the video and loved those beautiful images of yours Simon !
Thank you very much Raymond :)
Great photos Simon, and loved the sense of adventure and wonder you weaved through the video
Lovely video as always Simon, the first image prob my favourite but please send some snow down south asap !! Absolutely re the landowners permission recommendation, I've done similar with local Barn Owls on farmland and never had anything but positive responses BECAUSE I had asked politely first, explained my conservation work, promised not to advertise the location etc and have given four landowners images and now get feedback from them about Owl and other issues ...by the way, you do look slightly better out of focus :-)
Many thanks Nigel :). That's a great result for you. I'm seeing Barn Owls more frequently. They seem to be doing very well 👍
🌬️🌨️ ⬅️ That's me blowing the snow darn sarf
Beautiful. Thanks Simon
Lovely images as always Simon. Your videos, images and talk is a real tonic in these strange and challenging times 👍
Some lovely wintery images. That first one beautiful. I could see that straight away old oak trees are totally amazing in all sessions.
Many thanks, James. I do love an oak tree and I can't wait to share more from here :)
Hope some positivity surrounds 2 people. Happy 2021! Great video Simon, thanks for sharing.
The only time I like snow is when I can get out and photograph it, or watch the dog rolling about in it!...nice one!....
Perfect, just what I needed after a day of renovating my home office. Love that 2nd shot and the 4th. Wish we got some snow here...
Glad you enjoyed it Rich 😁
🇨🇦 Good day, Simon!!! Of course I already saw your excursion on Instagram. I sure hope you find boots for Meg! I can't tell you how much of a joy it is to see this! I find it fun to watch Meg sit and look around as though finding her own photo! Cheers, bro!
Glad you enjoyed it :) I've given up on the boot idea as I'm convinced she won't like them - going to get some oil treatment to stop the snow from sticking and clumping :)
Beautiful images n beautiful place ..nothing better then that fresh snow untouched ,,pure white ..stunning !!!!!! GOD BLESS !!!!!!!
As a long time follower of your development with the craft, I think that these images are among your very best. i hope and believe that they will grow on you over time. i would describe your appreciation of the woodland and its representation in these images as masterful.
That's very kind of you to say Brandon. I'm pleased you like the images. I've always critical of my images at first - much preferring to live with them for a while. I'm certainly happy with some of the results presented here :)
My greatest Inspiration. Since i discovered your Channel i Explored the hell Out of My local Woodlands. Thanks so much For all These adventures and all the Inspiration! Greetings From germany
That's fantastic to hear Tobias. Many thanks :)
Beautiful images Simon depicting a beautiful winter wonderland. You can tell both you and Meg had a great day out.
Many thanks Stuart 😊
What a wonderful winter day. My favourite was the square crop of the dead tree. Thanks.
Oh, how I miss the snow. Not much chance of that down here in Bucks. Deeply envious!
Great images, Simon - especially liked the first one. What a lovely location - you are a lucky man.
Much appreciated ! I'm hoping to get a version of that first composition without the snow too :)
A lot of inspirations 😊
Have you ever met a boar on your way?🐗 In the forest.
Thank you. We don't wild boars here anyway. Only deer in that woodland.
What a wonderful series of images. I particularly love how those snow bearing trees appear as though dear old mother nature has almost ‘drawn’ them over a white and pale grey canvas, really appealing.
Thank you very much :-)
wonderful Simon. Thank you so much for sharing this.
Great collection of images Simon, can only dream of experiencing these conditions between living right on the west coast and also being locked down, therefore it was nice to see you being out there and enjoying it along with Meg
The bit of video at the end with you walking away along the fence with Meg is outstanding. Nice composition.
10:35 - reminds me of your logo, which I like very much!
You have certainly done it justice Simon. These are amongst my favourite images you have ever produced.
That's very kind. Thank you Diane 😊
Those images are stunning, the movement in the snow really made them look like paintings. You must be very pleased you chose that location on that day. Loved it.
Thank you for you kind comment Stewart. Glad you enjoyed the images :-)
Fantastic! There is something so special about the soft quiet of a new snowfall.
Loved the place and the video. Its so much fun to be in the snow.
you´re videos are so peaceful! thanks
Lovely enjoyable video Simon a really great watch.
Lovely shots Simon. Great to see Meg enjoying herself. My dogs have a habit of running in front of my tripod putting footprints in vigin snow! All the best Mate.
Looks like you and meg had a great time nothing like that weather wise west dumbartonshire, just a covering. I still had a good day out though. To enjoy it. Great video .
Excellent instructional video, with some really nice Photographs, thank you for sharing... Best wishes.. Alex
What a beautiful day and place!
Great video. I thought the first photo was the best one of the set. Really well done. Also glad to see Meg loves the snow. Watching her bomb around brought a smile to my face.
Fabulous! Meg in snow is a feature as well!
Definitely some stunning landscapes! Thank you for sharing the process and your images.
Some fantastic, snowy, winter images in this video. I wish I had your eye for woodland composition. All the best for 2021.
Many thanks Ross. Best wishes!
Lovely video. I hadn't realized CZcams had somehow unsubscribed me until your video showed up in the general recommendations. Weird. Glad to see you again 😃
Welcome back ;-). Thanks!
Very nice indeed Simon..... I think you can at least a little excited, there were one or two really good ones there!
Great Vlog, Great Location, Wonderful conditions, Love the images of trees with a snow coating, especially the older and more twisted trees, thanks for sharing
Thank you Tony. Glad you enjoyed it.
You have absolutely wonderful winter there... here in Bulgaria it snows on some places, but where I live it is melting as fast as it is falling down.Wonderful winter scenery and stunning shots you got there! Well done!
Thank you Milen. We've not been getting a great deal of snow over the past 10 years so this was a very nice treat :) We had A LOT in 2010.
Found it really interesting how the texture of the falling snow made it look more like a painting. From a subtropical climate so these types of conditions are on the bucket list.
Every one of those shots was awesome. I love photographing during or after snow fall. I’ve got some of my best photos in those conditions. Now if they were only up to Simon Baxter’s level.
That's very kind of you to say. Thank you Scot!
Good to see you up and about. Meg is obviously thrilled as well. Beautiful images! Those conditions are so amazing to be in but very challenging to photograph well. 👍🙏
they are expecting a lot of snow this weekend....cant wait😍⛷⛷⛷
That was very special, Simon! Thank you for that wonderful look at those magnificent old Oaks! Seems like you and Meg are both in rare form!
Sean
I'm pleased you enjoyed it Sean :) Thank you!
Stunning as always, but you missed a great opportunity at 0:20. Thank you showing your work!!!
Many thanks! Although I didn't miss it - it made a nice composition for the video ;-)
oddly my favorite of the whole bunch is the 1st square image. I find it calming, soft with few colors, with depth and a subtle balance. ;)
great adventure Simon, thank you. Love the Three trees in the beginning they way you froze the falling snow is awesome. Really like the leaning tree and the old wall. Beautiful day
Love these images Simon and a video I’ll watch again. Love your work and looking forward to seeing your next installment.
Very kind of you to say. Thank you!
Absolutely gorgeous footage and images Simon. Glad you guys have taken advantage of the recent snowfall over there and been able to get out prior to lockdown and capture these stunning scenes. Stay safe.
Thank you very much!
For me, some of your most beautiful images ever.
Thank you very much Mike!
I was very interested in some of the simple technical aspects of this video, particularly how you keep the snow off of the camera! I find I'm often worried about getting my camera wet in winter snowfalls while I am out trying to capture the beauty of it. The plastic bags keep blowing off lol! I also enjoyed the description of the compostion which had an entryway to the beyond, framed by the majestic oaks. Thanks for this Simon. I will bring my brolly next time!
My thanks Linde. The brolly with a geared head is certainly a great combination. A good brolly has always been part of my gear but my current brolly is my favourite :)
Beautiful. We don't have the same problem accessing land in Scotland: we don't defer in the same way to the privileged and the concept of ownership of land -- our beautiful land -- is different. We certainly aren't obliged to tug at our forelock and offer free prints when we do access the landscape. I understand the constraints you have in England and I appreciate the kind advice you offer to others about how to approach gaining access. It's a responsible thing to do. Once this COVID business is over, come and enjoy the right to roam. Bring your dog, too.
I really like the 1st photo as there is something ethereal about it.
Hi Simon , you were probably nor very excited , but Meg was !! I'm joking . All images were very very good ( the oak tree especially) , but probably not your best, I agree with you .Thanks for all .
Looks a wonderful wood, and Meg was having fun
Such beautiful photos of those Trees, dressed in pure white snow. Loved all of them. 👍❤
Would kill for conditions like these. It's been about three years since we've seen snow round our way. A terrific looking woodland, fantastic conditions and beautfiul images mate 😊👍😊
Simon, I'd be mighty proud to call any of the photos as mine. I hope you find the perfect compositions in that woodland and share them with us.
Many thanks David! I'll certainly be sharing more from here :)
Hi Simon, I'd live to see what you could do with Wordsworths Fraternal Four yews in Borrowdale, I've not seen your take on yews. These trees have suffered in the recent past and you have the skill to convey their narrative. Great video today.
I think I know which ones you mean, I noticed them a few years ago. I should take another look :) Thank you
Meg must literally be the happiest dog in the word 😊 Beautiful images 👍
The first two images I thought were very beautiful. Thanks for bringing us along.
All the images are wonderful, particularly the second one. Thanks for sharing your snowy adventure.
What a great location, and wonderful conditions! Always a pleasure to see your process and beautiful images.
Beautiful pictures! Great start to 2021! There aren’t many old growth forests left to enjoy.
Many thanks! Yes, it's fortunate that this area is protected and I'll certain cherish the opportunity to document the trees.
Wow Simon great images. Like them all hope you didn't get wet.
Loved your pal in red awesome one
