Been here for 12 years. His case is typical and I hear it all the time. He got involved with a woman who took him to the cleaners. He lost everything either because he was stupid or he was reckless. Do not, I repeat, do not plan to live out your golden years in the Philippines unless you have a retirement income coming from abroad every month.

He used to work with me in Camotes in a School project..he don't know much about construction he told me, but he told me he needed work and camotes sounds inviting for him because he has not been in the island, so he work as a laborer...all of a sudden he got plenty of money because of his mother's death - some inheritance were sent to him we heard. He bought a motorcycle, he invited his Girlfriend and she came to the Island and stayed at a beach resort nearby . He met an accident with the bike driving intoxicated. The problem with Greg is his being a drunkard, he cant control it if he has money..I helped him once. Maybe the best is to admit him to a rehab facility so he could rebuild himself. I pity him.

I have known a few like him here too. Drunkard, choosing the wrong women who fleece him, borrowing and never repaying, lots of blaming. Don't want to go home, so they never leave. Locals will help for awhile, but without some repayment, they get tired as well. Actually very difficult for a down and out expat to get deported. Visa or not, they just exist best they can. Often they just eventually die here.

I wish him well too but that story has holes. Would you let someone who beats you and is crazy spend 2 million and then later 1 million and sell ALL your stuff right in front of you. I worked for a church for 11 years and heard many stories like his and I know when I am hearing (stuff.} Hope he gets back home to just start over. He said himself he can't do it there. A lot of people say they want to work and the homeless men that came to the church, we would pay and put them to work but no one worked so we stopped doing it. Sometimes you can help too much, and everyone has a story. It would be nice if he got pots and pans, and he went back to work but he only gives negative stories and means as to how he can't do anything at all. And if he got the 8,000 to start over, if you checked him out a month later I think the story would be different and the money gone. If his girlfriend was on drugs he might have been to because he went back to her and said he let her spend 1 million (hmmm) after spending 2 million already and beating him. $4,000,00 can take you anywhere but he wanted go back to her. This story is amazing, and I don't believe it all. But I wish him well. Anyone can change and I hope he does but after working for a church, I learned to listen in a different way and help in a different way because many just want handouts. If they have too many excuses is a red flag. When you give good advice there are excuses. I only give them cash if I like the (made up) story these days and it's different from the same old same old I hear all the time, but we gave out food and tried to help with housing, but they would get mad sometimes and you have to call the cops to the church because they and only wanted money.

I m a foreigner and I learnt one lesson that if you have any gf or wife do not name everything under her as you don't know the circumstances. 100% trust can sometimes result in regrets as you do not know the fate of your relationship. So distribute your wealth and assets in a way that In case you will not go beside but will not have any frustration at least .

the issue is many older men come here and end up marrying girls they meet in bars many years younger then them and don't use a little bit of common logic or ethics that would probably save their behinds. I feel sorry at times for these guys but at the same time don't as they should know if they mess with certain types of girls who are 18 and put everything in her name , chances are they will get took for everything they have. I am not saying every women is like that as i myself am in the pinas, but if you hang out with the wrong people and do the wrong things, somethings bound to go wrong, Pray this guy gets back on his feet and others see his story and use it as advice to stick to more reputable people and make good financial decisions. best of luck mate :-)

Greg is technically a refugee. Help him contact a government office, maybe the Mayor's office, to have him apply as a refugee and stateless person. The Philippines is open to refugees. Greg's case is unique but not insurmountable. He is educated and willing to work. All he needs is a break from the bad streak he's having and someone who can offer him shelter. He can also contact the local churches to see if he can cook in exchange for better living conditions while he thinks of how to move forward. He can teach, he can cook, he can supervise labor. He can be useful to society.

He CAN go back to England but doesn't want to. I'm not saying he SHOULD go back - but other than a lack of funds, there's no impediment to him returning. So, in what way is he a refugee? Refugees are such because of political reasons, such as war or persecution by the State. Greg is not where he is because of war or political persecution. The word you are looking for (and I know - because it applied to me) is "indigent." First port of call should be the Barangay captain.

I met a lot of Westerners "drifting around" in South East Asia. I sometime call them "lost".
It actually does not take that much to end up in this kind of hopeless situation. People are easily judging and putting the blame on guys like that.
This is not the first case I heard of foreigners who were fed an kept alive by simple Filipinos. The Philippines are full of very sweet and helpful people.
And I tell you: This guy is not the typical rotten, braindamaged alcohol and drug addicted idiot that you occasionally meet travelling.
He still maintains a certain spirit and behavour. I hope he can improve his situation one way or another. As I am getting older and my health is not great anymore I can see how hard it will be though.
I am happily married with a Filipina for over 34 years and I know the country very well. There are a lot of things that are wrong in the Philippines and there are terrible people as well. But most Filipinos are lovely, kind and helpful and we could learn a lot from them in the rich Western world.

Family problems could be anything so many homeless men in the uk after the wife take every thing a man's worked to build with a woman the uk is a cold country towards each other . Kinda funny if I want to grt help from them the doors closed if they came to me my doors never closed . I can relate a little, i got married in the philippines, lived there for a number of years, my two oldest children were born there, in Camarines Sur, its a beautiful, wonderful country and you do indeed fall in love with it, my wife and i did get ripped off by a family member, ended up selling everything ( at a loss ) and i worked in uk alone for 2 years 7 nights a week, and now we are all in the u.k together, very happy for the last 5 years. We will retire back out there, without making same mistakes. Salamat sa Dios.

Something is not adding up with this man's situation. Maybe he's holding something back. Wouldn't he qualify for some kind of UK government pension? He said he went to the embassy but he didn't say what options they offered. He made some poor choices with the money he had and the people he chose to associate with. Giving him money is just a temporary solution, he needs a source of income.🤦🏻‍♂️🏝️

I don't know about the UK, but in the US you can "get help" but not necessarily a place to live. Then if you live on the street you won't be clean enough to keep a job. In most of the US there are no "rooming houses" anymore.
Cheap lousy apartments used to be 1 weeks pay, now they are 2+ wks.
The bottom rungs of the ladder have been removed in much of the US.
And here you can definitely freeze to death.

obviously he didn;t recognise me, and started with his story...but guess what, i remembered the previous story, and his new story was not the same lol
I asked some locals about him and they said he is drug addict, compulsive lier and overstayer who does nothing but tell sob stories to tourists to get $ for drugs

As someone who has been around a lot of homeless drug addicts, his story sounds exactly like the bullshit sob stories these guys would tell everyone they were trying to take advantage of. Just denying fault at every corner and then just keeps one-upping all the tragic things that have happened to him.
I’d bet my house this guy is doing drugs and that’s the main reason he’s homeless.

He said his scars were first from a very bad accident falling off a motorbike. The scar on his forehead were from his ex girlfriend hitting him on the head and then it changed they were from robbers hitting him on the head.
Telltale signs hes lying: the missing teeth, leathered looking skin and thin appearance are very common signs of heroin users. His story is very rehearsed, but lacks consistency. It keeps changing all the time.
Of course his mother had over a million, but he can't get access to it. You come across loads of these men and women with the same playbook and spiel to try and get easy free money handed to them to buy drugs for their addiction.

@@seanmac.7130 Exactly!. I've pointed out how when I first met him in Stockport North West England the story he told was word for word perfect, thats why most people he came accross believed him and felt pity, he could even turn on the tears every single time adding to the emotional attachment affecting people's judgment.
now though, blinking heck. His new story is all over the place. And I'll just add that he had a serious drink issue and I suspected opiates at first with his pinned out eyes, but i tell you one thing, rarely did I see him drunk and the dude couldn't half chew your ears for hours and hours without getting a word in edgeways.
I concluded his pinned eyes might have been from the medication he was taking. (though hey, could have been opiates anyway lol) but he was definitely on something, impossible he could be affording cocaine every day on jobseekers benefit or disability benefit.
I was an amphetamine user at the time I met him, annoyingly when I used it I never got real chatty with motormouth like my friends and dealer would get. I just got real deep into my art or intense reading...
Going of what I know of his history and previous suspicions I reckon he's bang into the methamphetamines now. Especially since it's crazy cheap out in the far East and there's a real widespread problem in the certain parts of some cities. I could actually believe him getting bashed and robbed more than anything else from his mouth.. (PROBABLY ANOTHER ICE HEAD hehe..)
Thing is he does at least present with well kept haircut cleanly facial hair, and he uses that smile and other facial expressions excellently to convince his victims. Watching him perform, he'd make a great star of stage or film that's for sure..
Anyway, your comment is awesome, raising awareness on the key signs of a person with drug misuse. and what to suspect when hearing their sob stories, are there contradictions, or conflicting events in the back story..
What annoys me is that these low life gits and other thief's or liars misusing drugs are the ones that give all homeless and substance misusers a bad reputation. When there's people like myself who are good honest people with higher morals, feeding their needs and surviving without conning or stealing from friends, family, neighbours or anyone that's offering support.
And it also annoys me, when people like you or me are then in the wrong for speaking our minds and pointing out truth and reality to those falling for their crock of bull poop

Never leave yourself in a place where you are stuck. I'm back in the US since Nov 5 due to needing a pacemaker. Prior to that, I got an angioplasty costing $10k. I had access to the funds, but it would take time. My wife's childhood friend owned us the money for 2 weeks while I sold some stock and paid her back. My wife has been great through this. She has a good job and is holding down the fort while I'm gone. I'm going back to trucking for 2 months while I'm here.
Long story short, he needs to suck it up, go back to the UK and throw himself on the mercy of social services. His current circumstances are unsustainable..His health is not going to allow him to do manual labor forever..

I suppose I have some sympathy for my generation, since I know many of their weak fathers were or are similar. It also made me never want children of my own in this kind of world in which so many people take advantage of others.

One thing I disagree with is when vloggers say: " THis could happen to anyone." No. Wrong. Some of us have multiple back up plans. We have established income streams that will never end until we die( pensions, Social Security, etc.) The ex pats who have issues are those who have no plan. They think they will work once they settle in the Philippines thru a yt channel or some other online work. And when this does not happen; they are in financial trouble. It happens all the time. poor planning leads to poor outcomes.
