as horrible as that initial baller patch was, it was immensely funny to see aerospray become peak meta for like 5 seconds. i miss that meta purely because of aerospray lmaoo
I wish i could've enjoy that moment since aerospray is my main lol
loved using aerospray at that time. i felt like a peak player
I see this comment after splatoon 3 release.
That explains the deja vu but instead of hamster, TOTSUGEKI!
stop talking about the trashcan gun.
AEROSPRAY WAS META?!?!?
as someone who started with splatoon 3, mains the mg, and only got splatoon 2 a week ago, this comment gives me unexplainable joy
As someone who never had splat 1, and got splat 2 xmas 2019, i cannot wait to firsthand experience splat 3 jank.
Same lmao
It won't be as janky I'm sure of it hopefully they learn form splat 2
same
@Vihaan Singla splatoon 1 had better maps tbh. Splat 2 had better unique weapons
Same. I wanna see the chaos that is the early meta
"when Nintendo had no idea what they were doing" bro Nintendo still dosent know what they're doing with Splatoon 3
Octoboy's video about the tri-slosher is such a relic of its time tbh
This reminds me of TierZoo's video on the Carboniferous, where he described that every insect during the Carboniferous was so giant, strong and fast that the only thing that could compete with them were other insects.
how did they get nerfed eventually? insect-eating animals? lol
The giant insects went extinct due to the Carboniferous-Permian rainforest collapse, which destroyed a lot of the giant trees that were everywhere, greately reducing the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere and causing the giant insects to go extinct. The cause of this rainforest collapse is unknown.
I faintly remember saying "I refuse to go Tri-Slosher, I don't want to be like them" as a stupid Vanilla Dualies main because I was pretty casual about Splatoon
SAMMEEE i used to love vanilla dualies so much
I still do, it’s so mobile and ink efficient with burst bombs. Let’s you get in real fast if the opponent isn’t wary and out fast if I realize I’m against someone better than me
Man, I have semi-fond memories of the metas after this one, but I feel like we've kinda come full circle from the original meta, aside from inkjet. Tri and Armor are both great again, the most popular weapon (k52) is run with 1-3 if them on most teams, and Stingray is... uh, stingray.
This was a trip down memory lane, as someone who had both Splatoon games day one and experienced these jank metas casually.
I remember the day I was coming home and hopped on Twitter, only to witness the Sting Ray after its crazy buff in a clip, and my jaw absolutely dropped.
I never realized how broken weapons and specials were until I watched this video 💯
I didn't remember that Armor had no piercing damage, that was so broken, add it was a really good way to nerfed it.
Early Splatoon 1 Meta Was Chaos Because Everyone Was Bad So Roller Was On The Docket. It Wasn’t That Roller Was Broken (mostly) But It Was That No One Knew How To Counter Roller
Yeah that thing called range boom all the counterplay needed
basically, it was the noobness
@@magic3734 which in turn can be countered by a secret technique called WALKING or SWIMMING
It's infuriating how you capitalise the first letter for every word except for mostly
@@murtymcfly because its in brackets?(my guess)
These videos seem to be pretty interesting. I didn’t get the game until 2018 so I don’t know much about the really early days. Part of me is glad I didn’t have to play during this time but at the same time it would have been interesting to experience.
its almost ironic to see how for people to not run 1-2 armors in every singe comp (with 1 being almost mandatory) it requires invincible ballers and spawn protected death lasers
you know the game is in a terrible state when aerospray is a top meta weapon (not useable not barely viable but a top tier weapon) and running one weapon 3 times is the best route to take
No aim no brain, must be a bucket main
The virgin Tri-Slosher: no aim, ignores objective
The chad Explosher: calculating, follows objective
this was super interesting to me! i bought the game in august 2020 so i didn’t get to experience any of this. it’s really cool to see how the game was played in its early days and makes me curious to see what splatoon 3’s meta is gonna be like at release 🤔🤔
Can’t wait until we get the the update that added mpu
I’m wondering, there probably wouldn’t be people willing to do this, but would it be possible for Splatoon 3 to have switches kept on certain updates for history/preservation purposes, and then to play on that patch people just have to turn on the “match version with others” setting and go into a PB?
itd be hard, you cant go thru old versions and it basically means never playing online again for every version
I wish theyd just let us revisit old versions offline
splatoon 3 pbs but it's the minecraft launcher xddd
tbh I'd love to see that ngl
you can already do that on emulator (Ryujinx I think) and will be able to do the same with splatoon 3
Technically, you can do that if you trick the system into thinking that your Switch is locally connected with the other online players through something like Ryujinx LDE version, it's probably not possible through a retail Switch though.
As a charger main, the early days of Ink Armor give me PTSD. Conversely, I am nostalgic for the time when I could routinely wipe the opposing team with a single Sting Ray.
Interesting fact most people probably don't remember, the patch notes for patch 1.4, which features the first ever change to Bamboo, were announced before Bamboo was even released. Admittedly it was only a couple hours before, but it was still pretty funny to see them change a weapon before you could even play it.
you forgot to mention how stingray was way worse since you could use it inside the spawnpoint, essentially rendering you invincible and thereby had no counter whatsoever. ugh. I still hate stingray even after nerfs, but god damn was it horribly op back then.
I didnt forget that im more saving it, 2.0 has peak ray meta with heavy spamming it and thats when i wanna talk about it being in spawn as well as the old duration/no dmg reduction thru walls. RN machine was the main ray weapon and qsj wasnt super common. So it wasnt used too much in spawn yet
Same thing for not mentioning bubble blower, bc its when forge comes out that people rly abuse that special
It’s a lot of fun to use but being on the receiving end sucks.
The worst part was when you were mid map and you were like “oh a stingray im gonna counter it with my own!” And you were like “oh theyre at spawn, guess i will die”
It’s crazy how Sting Ray was originally the worst special. People making tier lists were saying that having Sting Ray was worse than having no special at all
Man the baller buffs bring me back to my best rage memories of playing Splatoon
Found this pretty interesting especially since I only recently starting knowing more about comp. Looking forward to the next part.
as someone who didnt experience this era, this was pretty interesting to watch! i found your channel some weeks ago via recommended and your content is great, keep it up!
I miss the tri slosher being overpowered days. It was kinda funny seeing it everywhere
i barely remember these early metas as i didnt have the game yet, i just remember people talking about tri being too good and thinking that was Neat tm because i liked tris design so i felt like playing whenever i got my own switch. cant wait to see part 2 as i actually played these metas lol
really looking forward to the rest of this series!
Nice series, I'm looking forward to part 2! I bought Splatoon 2 at launch after trying it in the Splatfest World Premiere, as my first shooter game, and while I was a noob who couldn't care less about the pro meta back then, this is still nostalgia.
So nice learning about how splatoon 2 was like before I got to play it
I got the game the day it came out and i got like 5 games with all 8 players on vanilla dualies
Curious how the progressive release of stages affected things. As a casual I always got the impression that the maps added later on - including returning maps - started to really incentivize some longer ranged or less interactive weapons.
amazing video ! brought soooooo much memories, and you explained all the patches pro and cons really well ! i remember when the triple tri was everywhere, it literally gave me trauma xD
now hearing about this competitive wise it sounds like the game was in a pretty chaotic state but honestly back then for me at least it was the most fun times, I've never had this much fun casually than back in these days and also I feel like a lot of people were still learning the game so even though the weapons were extreme, it could have been much worse if people weren't in that learning state but instead already experienced like nowadays...
I was living in a country where multiplayer was banned so when I got splatoon 2 on launch, I wasn’t able to play multiplayer at all for 3 years until I moved to a different country so i guess I didn’t really experience the chaos lol
YES! I have been wanting to see a series like this! I have it in my video notes. I would love to see a prequel to this series for Splatoon 1, Chara.
I loved using the brella at this time. I don't remember anything regarding my encounters with the tri-sloshers. The one thing I disliked was inkjet. If you were under the exhaust ink of your opponent using the jet, you were finished. It was that strong. You can sort of replicate this in SR with the Flyfish if you get under it.
Looking forward to the series :D i started in may 2019, and since I play comp i found it super interesting watching older tournaments and thinking about these metas myself. When i got into cp, armor already was top tier. It was that time when armor & inkjet used together was incredibly strong and ttek was still played, so I picked it up as an addition to kshot, my other main back then. Out of all the meta that build around armor in the last 1 ½ years, that was definitely my favorite. ive not seen any other special than armor defining the meta (except missiles recently) which is kinda sad, so that look back to the past is amazing for me :D
a year later you enter anarchy battles and see 3 sloshing machines...
i wonder where that came from
Watching these splatoon meta videos after ignoring them for a long time feels so wierd. I had X rank in all categories (however important that is) but just always used what I wanted to. If I ever wanted to sweat I’d pick Glooga Dualies and stack MPU. Resulted in a two shot when mixing one normal shot and one dash shot. 99.9 with two normal shots. Great video, this documentation is surely important!
tri meta was scaring
I remember playing on launch day. Man those were the days
Great vid I would love another one like this (flash backs of quad tri slosher)
chaotic but the hype of a new splatoon kept me going also old missiles at 10:43 looks so funny
awesome vid but can we also appreciate his awesome taste in music? buoy base galaxy as an outro? perfection
I can’t wait for a splatoon 3 video on this 😮
i love these types of videos
i never knew about the splashdown latency problem. I remember not considering the possibility of shooting people down being a thing
I love this new series
I pretty much stopped playing after these patches, so it's nice to see a synopsis of what was my splatoon 2 experience.
Patch 1.4 came right before I bought the game, and I absolutely remember the tri hate in CZcams videos. I’m excited for more blasts from the meta past!
This may not deal with the video, but I was thinking up some cool special concepts and buffs to specials, and thought of these :
Splat vac- special that functions similarly to stingray, charges by how long you have stayed alive, and is a long, modified vacuum hose with coils around the players arm that connect to an ink pack. the special sucks special points from players and has the range and ability of stingray to penetrate walls, but can only penetrate surfaces, as it is not able to damage players in any way. it sucks more points frame, with more MPU/Special up applied.
Disruptinator- a bazooka that blast modified disruptors, that disables the use of sub weapons, lowers stats, and temporarily disables the abilities that have enhanced the main weapon of the user, returning it to normal use. as a drawback, the more successful the weapon is in attacking the target, the higher the chances of the weapon "disrupting".
Stingray 2- this stingray functions like regular stingray, but moves faster, last 5 secs longer, and has a cooler design. only disadvantage is that the power is lowered by 20%.
Splashdown buff- splashdown has a higher altitude when jumping, and when in the air, gives the player the choice to jump in a select direction and distance in that direction, depending on the motion of the stick,(of course you cant LITERALLY jump ANYWHERE) and has further damage radius. the drawback is that the special takes a while to charge, and you are in the air long enough to be splatted by a skill LONG RANGED weapon.
Just some things I thought about. ik ik, it wasnt asked for, and it has NOTHING to deal with the vid, but I had to jot before I forgot lol. still nice vids tho chara!
Your use of Mario Galaxy music makes me happy
I got the game on release and was absolutely relieved when they patched drop roll so you werent stuck for that second after
Ah the Buoy base galaxy music is just 👌
I jammed like crazy to the outro music
6:18 “…Which means it controls space unbelievably easily, just by existing.”
j-jusT LIKE YOUR MO-
I got splatoon 2 in 2018 and 3 days later we had a road trip to brazil. Aka where i dont have reception. So i PLOWED through hero mode. We stayed at my graunts house one day since it was a 2 day trip and i connected online. My dissapointment when sheldon and the others told me i was too low level was immense.
I remember using the sloshing machine, which was pretty broken at the time I was playing, and every week I was in a game with 8 sloshers, all the unbranded varients
I remember all these so vividly
man i forgot about the tri-slosher meta. even playing casually that shit was ROUGH
It's funny that the launch of splat2 had inkjets so good but it wasn't used as much based on how difficult it was back then but now it's a lot easier and weaker same with ink storm and stingrays. Ink storms was also incredibly more popular than splash down at the time which they were so good for splatzone that you'll come across about 4 splatershot pros in total in normal games. Time really does flies as it is 2022 now lmao
Can’t wait for the double jet meta. I think it was the most exciting meta to watch. Also because it’s around the time I started competitive.
I've owned Splatoon 2 since launch, but I don't remember the old metas because I wasn't into playing ranked and hearing about comp back then
I didn’t get Splatoon 2 until March 2019 so it’s interesting to know what the old metas were
Also, I played it for the first time when there was a free demo for a week. I didn’t play it until the last day of the demo but I loved it
I remember the tri slosher era. Oh my god that was just insufferable and I played Inkbrush and Tri-slosher too lmao. I went up against a team of 4 of them in turf war and was just completely overwhelmed. I was new to splatoon and that was just the rudest awakening ever.
Great vid
Tri being so overshadowed in splat1 while most other returning meta weapons were nerfed hard going into 2 was really a recipe for disaster with the untested new specials
Seeing the old gameplay of Humpback TC reminded me how terrible the TC path on that stage used to be.
I cannot WAIT for the meta of splatoon 3. We HAVE to experiment and absolutely break each other's games (and spirit) the first few weeks 😊
I can't for my Splatoon 1 main L3 Nozzlenose (comboed with Disruptor and Killer Wail Bazooka on a roll yessir) to completely dominate the meta of Splatoon 3 for a good while but never getting nerfed because bursts will be deemed as "a high skill weapon".
I love wheres platoon 3 is right now, I hope they don't change TOO much!
Splatoon 2 dark ages were my hiatus from the series. I picked up Splatoon 2 in 2019 and I had put down Splatoon 1 in 2016-2017. So while I am a testfire vet I have patches of Splatoon’s life I was just completely absent for.
I don’t know if this meta was a thing in December 2017 (when I got the game) but I don’t really remember this stuff XP
ah, memories. played splatoon 2 since launch and i was there for all this...whether i liked it or not
Damn this brings back memories of the earlier Splatoon 2 days
Its been a long time since i started playing splatoon 2 but I do remember hearing that brella and (range) blaster were extremely popular back in the day.
range not as much but brella yea, people mostly played range bc it was good in 1 and took months to be released, once rain got nerfed it dropped off p hard
I just realized how long range the tri was in 1.1
I remember I played back then and finally gave in and bought the tri slosher… on the day it was nerfed
I was 13 when when Splat 2 released and didn’t know anything about the meta but I played tri-slosher on release anyway lol
I don't think it would work but I think it would be pretty fun if they gave you the option to choose the version of the game for private battles. I would love to play with launch balance just for fun and it would prevent stale metas when updates are done.
There are so damn many options they could give you for private battles but I have an inkling (pun intended) that the changes won't be as great and drastic as we all hope
i remember a lot of people using the octo brush
oh boy cant wait for 4.0 :j
Wait... alot of people bought this game during the pandemic? That's awesome to hear, hope they liked it. Also....
Why you bring back this nightmare meta.... I was using dualies at that time....
I wonder if the brella was less popular in the West due to the distance between peers/players (and therefore the round-trip latency because, yk, lightspeed) being much larger than in Japan.
I’ve had the game for a long time, but I never paid attention to the meta until around 2020
I forget exactly when I first got the game but I believe it was in Dark Ages
Ive gone back to the tri-slosher recently and it's still very broken in the right hands (not mine). It feels like the Carbon from Splatoon 1. Just shark around and annihilate people
Ah, the good old days when you could get all tri slosher matches.
This is the dumbest thing I’ve seen Tenta Brella do 8:07
I love it 😂
Honestly
Since i got the game right before the pandemic (even tho i could play it a little bit before thx to my brother), seeing the old stages and changes of weapons is so weird
2000~ hours on Splatoon 2 and i just discovered Humpback had a different tower path lmao
I remember when trislosher was at the top of the meta and the 52 was never used, look at it now! Top of the meta yo!
I cant wait for splat 3 junk. I was there for most of the old meta jank. Tri slosher was so infuriating
Past me, here's a meta recap for you
Drizzle season 22:
Early: nobody knew what they were doing, so high dps weapons like sloshing machine and .52 gal rose to prominence.
Mid: sloshing machine started to fall off, as it got nerfed. People started to realize that E-Liter was insanely broken due to the shitty map design.
Late: Idk how to describe the meta, and ig people ran a lot of dps weapons.
Chill Season 22:
Early: BOOYAH SPAM
i honestly never ran into the meta for the first year of splatoon 2
I personally use the brush in tower defense because people are so preoccupied with the tower that they don’t pay attention to the person coming up behind them and smacking them in the ass with a paintbrush. It was not uncommon that I get over 25 kills in our tower match
I got splatoon2 when it came out but I did not play it now it is my favorite game
when i was playing tri slosher during this meta i thought i was just really good at it then someone told me about the nerf and i noticed i was doing badly which made me question if i was ever good in the first place lmao
Who else got the game for Christmas of 2017 then didn’t play it till 2019 so still missed all the metas
I wonder how broken(in good or bad) Krpaid would have been back then
itd be the best weapon in baller meta easily
@@ProChara also imagine if the brella bug was still in the game, shooters final have a massive counterplay- an unkillable wall
I've been thinking of waiting a couple of months after Splatoon 3 is released before buying it because they will likely roll out the weapons and maps too slowly for my taste. But you've given me another reason: Nintendo will likely need at least a few months to get the game properly balanced.
"thank you for wa-" *end screen appears*
I hate how the meta changes by the patch. You could tell what was considered strong by how common it was then it would get the TINIEST nerf and people would make RIP memes and it'd become less common. I remember the 230p nerf having no effect on Ballpoint Nouveau because who tf was playing that for inkstorm? But that nerf made it go from 2-3 per team to you'd see 2-3 of them a day.
I actually got the game with my Switch in early 2018 but I didn’t get into playing until March 2019
This is when I joined Splatoon and I was very confused on why everyone had a green bucket
Lmao same
