  • I was interested at the thought of using sunflowers as the trellis for some tomato plants. Throw in a nasturtium, a field pumpkin, and some basil (with the appearance of the yearly unexpected volunteer plants) and you have this video. This "time lapse" was shot over a span of about 4 months. I hope you can learn a bit from it, I sure did. It's worth mentioning that there was a serious drought this year - 2021, but because of the compost and no dig methods we utilize I rarely watered and still had great results. I would zigzag the sunflowers if I were to do it again. Also I would allow the pumpkins to grow outside of the bed so that they wouldn't have been so shaded. Companion planting has always and will always be a staple in our garden... I feel this is a good representation of it and recommend packing the beds as full as you can. You can always pull the "excess" out if it starts to get too crowded or damp. Thanks for checking in- keep growing!

Man, this was a pleasure to watch. I like the format and all. Im growing tomatos 1’ apart from each other I have 12 plants going 2 rows…they are about 1 to 2’ tall. Built a trellis and havent hem started on a twine that I hang down from above, but the sun flower as a support is brilliant, thank you for sharing. I have some sunflowers started they’re about 8” tall , im gonna give them a try and plant a few in between…it looks crowded already as it is , but i really would like to try. Wish me luck. Thank u and Have a great day .

Nice- good luck! In the future I will plant the sunflowers in a zig zag pattern and run string horizontally about 3-5’ high. Otherwise it was a huge success-even if the tomato plants started to sag as the fruits got heavier.

Little Ce thinks she is so funny with that entire tomato in her mouth. Loved the video.

I am growing sun flowers for the first time this year. I love the idea of using sunflowers as a trellis. I just learned about this method a few weeks ago and I am trying it in my own garden. I’m a CZcams gardener too. I think I may have already messed up. My pole beans and morning glories that I planned to grow up the sunflower and growing so much faster then my sunflowers! Do you have any advice on what I should do now? I may make a trellis out of branches but I’d love to see this work out as is. Thank you for all your help. You have taught me something new. I hope we can continue to support and learn more from each other.

May not be of use responding so late, but you could let the pole beans sprawl on the ground then hang them on the sunflowers once they are tall enough.

this was amazing! do you think you could train the sunflowers along a more decorative trellis or do they want to go straight? i have my sunflowers and tomatoes started this year, but never would have thought to grow them together like that, thank you!

You’re welcome. You can train them in any shape you want as they grow when they are young, they will however try to grow straight upwards towards the sunshine. You may even get multiple shoots coming up if you arch it far enough.

I like it! What did you do with the sunflower stalks? Thanks

I lay them on the ground and cover with straw and compost… then plant squash in it. Usually a winter squash or sugar pumpkins.

Do you have any videos of your greenhouse construction and heating? I couldn't find any. Thank you. Plus... where do you live?

I don’t, sorry. We have a few different designs… maybe I should do one this summer? I’m in northern Minnesota around Bemidji.
