Check in for the test of the fast twist hawken rifle from Pedersoli! The blackpowder hunting season is starting again in Hungary, so I took one of these rifles to the range today to test it with plastic sabot.

I’ve been shooting modern firearms all my life! I love my little arsenal!
But....
as I f the last year or so I’ve drifted toward black powder shooting, there’s just something pleasurable about it. Like you’re somehow connecting with history.
I’m looking for a rifle and i REALLY like this one!
I think by Christmas I’ll have one along with it’s accoutrements.
Loved the video, My next rifle will be the Pedersoli Mountain Hawken… I can’t wait to shoot it!
Good luck with your new puppy, beautiful!
Thanks again for your great video.
good hunting, I know we are excited for this years season.
Really glad I found your channel. Great videos. Keep it up my friend.
An excellent video with an excellent Hawken! Seems you have a great couple of hunting companions...nice!
All your videos are very educational great shooting & beautiful rifle
Hey capandball, I know this is one of your older videos but it’s still awesome. Can’t wait to get one of these rifles myself.
A great video as always :-)
Great video..good luck in your competition and your studies
Wow, nice rifle! Great advice about getting game closer that's never a bad idea. I really like the idea of sabots and a smaller bullet. Good shooting!
Great shooting!!!!
Very good video of a great rifle!
i live so close to the missouri river so this is awesome and a cool part of history
I've got a very similar (not Pedersoli, but also italian made) percussion rifle chambered in .445.
It's allowed to shot muzzle loaders on our 50m pistol range and I'm surprised how precise even simple round lead balls can be on that distance. Love the soft recoil and the sound of black powder rifles, they make boom, not pang.
Bravo! Well-done sir!
Great video
Finally, someone with a real Hawken, nice rifle.
that is pretty good shooting, and the fast barrel twist is really meant for the modern plastic skirted slugs.
Love his dog. Says a lot about the man the way he interacted with the animal. They can be as bad as a 4 year old.
Excellent shooting, and presentation! I like this rifle!David back Menifee county Kentucky Usa.
You make some exceptional videos . History and firearms are two great passions of mine and I'm glad a successful you tube channel covers both topics so well. Pedersoli Swiss Target rifle; what are your thoughts on this weapon?
Haloo!
I've been shooting sabot loads in my sidelocks for years. When matching the bullet to the rifling rate, the combo works very well.
My reason is accuracy. When taking an animal's life, all it has after all, it rises to a moral obligation to do so as quickly as possible.
I do agree with you, that true hunting is within the range of the animal's senses.
"They love each other" *demonic puppy screeches*
I have a Thompson Centers Hawken rifle which is very similar to that also in .50 Cal. I have just recently purchased a lee 320 gr R.E.A.L. (Rifling Engraved At Loading) Bullet mold. I have cast a number of them and have some ready to shoot but have not had a chance to shoot them. They are supposed to clean the barrel when you fire. I did run one down the barrel and use a ball screw to remove it and it did scrap some carbon fouling out which is impressive seeing as I clean it very well after shooting. I hope to shoot them soon. I have in the past used the same plastic sabots you are using but with 375 gr boat tail rounds. If you shoot it to many times with out lubricant the plastic will build up and you have to clean the barrel. Great video and Happy hunting!!!
Love your videos for Pedersoli. Can you do one on the Carleton under hammer? Looks like odd pistol to shoot.
As always beautiful shooting! Good luck in the competition and your studies. I may be missing it but are you using hearing protection? As a sufferer of chronic ringing of the ears, I would encourage it.
For coverage! -
:-)
Regards, Madziar.
Perfect,awesome.
This rifles use of a sabot reminds me of the Dreyse Needle rifle which uses a wooden sabot to hold an acorn shaped bullet.
I hunt with a Thompson Center Encore muzzle loader in 45 caliber. I use a PowerBelt, 175gr bullet. It may not be “traditional “ but what a hunting rifle. The PowerBelt bullets don’t use a conventional sabot design. They are phenomenal and are available in a lot of calibers with 50 caliber being the most popular in the US. If you get a chance try them you will be amazed.
Excellent
I'm thinking .50 Maxi Balls would be the ticket for this rifle
I’m eager to try out some sabots in my White Mountain Carbine. I’ve learned that it doesn’t do very well with round ball if you don’t get the patch just right.
Are you Going to do a compare video about replica and original remington new model army??
I envy your ability to shoot so many beautiful weapons. I thought your country was very strict on gun control as all
of Europe. Keep up the excellent work and if I ever get a chance to visit your country I would really enjoy meeting
you. The closest I ever got to Hungry was Viet Nam. You never know. Take care.
i think this is awsome you do this i was a hunter using regular firearms, and after watching your vids i understand there is more work to shooting a muzzel loader but more sporting and much more skill is required, im buying one myself, if i may ask what is your opinion of the traditions model of the hawken.
very very nice shooting. Happy hunting! ps what do you hunt? boar, deer or .....
I cast up round ball and Maxie bullets for my .50 Cal cap 1/42 twist it is right in the middle for twist 60gr for the round ball 90gr for a Maxie both shoot well and have dropped deer out to 100
do you apply the lube on the bullet? or on the plastic wad? ( i am new to muzzle loading)
Great videos! Any chance that you can do an evaluation on the Pedersoli Rocky Mountain Hawken with patched round ball? I am really interested in that rifle and there are no CZcams videos about it.
Well, I bought the Rocky Mountain maple .54 version. It is very nice.
Só espingarda antiga, espetácular!
What about a percussion sharp carbine? Do the sabot work well with it? Since it about same caliber. And the sharp is faster to reload.
I have a CVA Hawken made in the 80's. I broke the ramrod. Found a oak dowel at the home depot. Used some light furniture stain. Looks better than the original.
Great video!! Question...isn't 100 grains a little much for a .50 cal?? I normally shoot 55-70 grains from my Pedersoli Pennsylvania .50 cal. flintlock with very good results. Max suggested load for this rifle is 110 grains.
Awesome doggies!
You gotta be a democrat!
Modern muzzleloades use a removable breech plug to make it easier to clean. Firing the sabot leaves plastic, how difficult is it to clean a closed breech muzzleloader using sabots? I have a Thompson Center in 1:48 twist, have not used sabots. Have you tried with that twist rate?
reminds me of the old CVA mountain rifle...
Pleas note American previewers, this is how it should be done and this bloke knows how to shoot. .
Aw! What kind of beautiful hunting dogs r those?!
Christopher Jefferson dachsunds
Excellent grouping. I could wish to get that score from my AK-47 during my military service:)))
Greetings from Poland.
I am in New Hampshire USA and I built my AK47 from a bucket of parts and got a 2 inch group with it. Polish folder. Love the dependability of the beast. The cartridge is about the same power as our 125 year old 30/30 and that is good for about everything over here.
AK47 in your service ? You sure it was not an AKM ?
I didn't this model had 1:24 rifling. Thanks. North Carolina, USA.
Black-powder hunting is the best !!! I do Archery with a Recurve Bow but Black-powder is so much better :) I used a Thompson Center Renegade in .50 Cal. with Maxi-Ball 370 Grain flat nose bullets that I make myself and used Bore Butter when loading for hunting. I only used 75 grains of black-powder due to how soft the lead was that I used... If a bullet I made was dropped from shoulder height on a hard surface it would deform to much to be used in the rifle !!! Making this the best Deer slammer ever :))) Good luck Hunting :D
A little movie trivia for those interested, the .50 Hawkin rifle was featured in the movie Jeremiah Johnson.
+787theninja Yes it was, the Hawkin brothers made their guns in St. Louis,Mo.
I enjoyed this video very much! I have a .50 caliber Missouri River Hawken and love it. I also have a .50 caliber Pedersoli Traditional Percussion Hawken and love it as well. I enjoyed your video on that one also. My question: can I shoot saboted bullets from my Pedersoli Traditional Hawken like I do from my Missouri River? I shoot .50 caliber Harvester Crush Rib sabots with .44 or .45 caliber Hornady pistol bullets or Scorpion Gold bullets. Is that ok in my Missouri River? If so, can I shoot the same configuration in the Pedersoli Traditional Hawken? I realize the twist in the traditional Hawken is not ideal for saboted bullets but I'd like to try if it's safe for the rifle and for me! Thank you for your videos and advice!
+Apis Mellifera The traditional hawken was a slow twist for patched round ball. Conicals need a fast twist to stabilize. But, that being said, every gun is different, shooting is the best test!!
Yes it will be safe as long as you load it properly !!
i cant fing this sabots(baskets) anyway.. Anyone know where to buy it fot this gun ( 50 cal 1 ,24twist)?
Hi. Can you tell me a little about yourself? How did you get into black powder firearms? Are they uncommon where you live? You mentioned receiving permission to hunt with them. Is that unusual? Your videos are professional quality. Take care. Jon.
Hola. Gracias por este video. Está muy bien. Yo tengo ese mismo rifle pero en calibre 54, para bala esférica, y es muy buen arma también para cazar. Y por su puesto a mi no me gustan nada los modernos rifles in-line. Saludos.
So since it has that plastic sleeve it doesn't need and wad behind the bullet? Sorry just learning
What thread pitch? :)
How many yards is 150 meters?
I wonder how the Pedersoli compares to the Investarm "Great Plains" style rifle? They look very similar.
Basically the same rifle. With Pedersoi being the better quality of the two.
Well Done! Would it be possible to fire this rifle with a musket cap & nipple?
Same question I have. If so, I’m getting one.
Take care the small dog !
Walt, Thompson Center is most assuredly not made by Investarms.
decent group and those bullets should leave a nice wound on game
Красивое оружие с прекрасным звуком выстрела.!
Can u post night hunting shoot with head light..
Have they tried a one in 66 rifle turn
Would the barrels off these fit on the Cabelas Hawken? Barrel mines got is pretty piss poor quality.
+jaket2k9 maybe, the originals were a hooked breach, i don't know bout these!!
What was your powder charge? Wanting to shoot mine for the first time this weekend and just got some 240 grain sabots. Any help would be much appreciated!
I think it only responds to people known on youtube, too bad.
He said 100
What breed is the large dog?
Where is your 'I am a rebel soldier' song? I'm trying to look for it
I have that on a Tennessee Ernie Ford album, many yrs old.
So.....do we call you Dr. Gunn now?
Cap is that one of your hog dogs?
What is the maximum powder charge you can load in this rifle?
here it is for all pedersoli rifles and pistols www.davide-pedersoli.com/supporto-dettaglio.asp/l_en/idsu_9/suggested-black-powder-loads.html
570 m/s how much fps
I tried to access www.capandball.eu and it failed. Is that web site no longer functional?
Hawkens usually come in 1 turn in 48 twist allowing either patched round ball or conical.
Patched round ball is good for hunting to 90 yards,.....like 65 gr FFF
They are accurate much farther its just that you wouldn't want to wound an animal.
And yes I can shoot bullets but most shots are less than 50 yards.
Your gun looks fabulous and of very high quality.
I can remember when Americans could make gun's well.
I find at 50 yards with black powder most muzzleloaders can 1 hole and at 100 can clover leaf,.....but you must use an optimum load not a maximum load.
And always shoot paper to know how good your powder is.
Yes they can shoot far but I limit my self to 120 yards with a bullet,.....because I am confident of my vision at that range.
I can use a muzzleloader to hunt or I can use a center-fire rifle to hunt (straight wall cartridges 444 Marlin,...45/70,....44 magnum,... 357 magnum)
But I use a 12ga because it works well,.......but hunting is not a sure thing,.......so muzzleloader season is a second chance.
Your gun is beautiful and looks like excellent quality.
Thompson Centers were prettier,..... but yours has better sights and yours looks authentic.
Cap and Ball what type of sabot cup is that? I cast .456cal /220 grain conicals for my 1858 Uberti Remington reproduction. They are to hard to load in my gun so I bought a .450 cal / 200 grain mold. I thought with a sabot cup I could use the .456's I already made in my sidelock rifles. What do you think?
When you hunting with muzzle loading, you must have a good side arm to deal with charging bears or boars. What your sidearm?
My sidearm is my dog, Szeder the hannoversche schweißhund :)
+capandball
A dog is good. A pistol is good too! And a Bowie knife.
a 500 SW magnum revolvers would be good choice.
I have a 45-70 revolver I carry
Enjoyed your video. I HUNT with black powder also 250 grain bullet and 100 grains of powder. I live in the USA. Nice to have something in common.😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
I have noticed you use FFF and not FF in your rifles, why?
Kind Regards, Morten.
FFF is smaller grained than FF
+Esoxhunt Traditionally, it was thought that 50 cal and below you would use 3F for a faster burn, since the projectile was smaller and lighter. However i shoot 2F in all my guns no matter the caliber except my snider-enfields and martini-henrys because they are cartridge guns so i use 1F !!
+Esoxhunt
Thanks for asking that I was wondering as well. I always heard triple fine for 45 and under and double F for 50 and up.
I shoot fff in my fifty, but back the charge of by 5-10 grains. Works well.
The blade sight on the front looks backwards. Is that the way it is supposed to be ? I see them the other way most of the time. I wonder what way is correct.
Good looking gun! I dont know why but it looks beutyful. But i prefer bolt action rifles more, can we see videos about some of them?
i know but we have already seen some ww2 submachine guns so i thought why not?
Does the lock contains a leaf-spring or a coil-spring? If the latter is present, then my Hawken might be the same as this one (I bought it second hand, so I have no clue about it's origins)... I also noticed that the bullets come down lower than I aimed for, altough I use the traditional patch & ball.
The spring is a traditional leaf spring. If yours has a coil spring, i think it was made by Investarms, not Pedersoli.
Ah yes indeed.. I just checked the papers, and it is indeed the case.. I only wonder, if the barrel is from the same factory (ie. if it is developed for hunters, the plastic and slug, instead of sporting since the coilspring lock is not allowed in competitions).
+YaoiMastah the sabot is just a plastic patch, i don't think the barrel design has anything to do with the patch !!
I'm curious to see if this musket would be better off as a smoothbore if it uses a sabot. Think about the jump in performance when NATO tanks, USA and Germany, switched from the rifled 105mm to the smoothbore Rhinemetall 120mm.
I think it depends on what defines performance...A smoothbore would generally be less accurate. (There can be exceptions from time to time). You could possibly gain higher velocity. I think that's the whole idea behind the smoothbore cannons you mention. I don't believe they were able to achieve such high velocity from a rifled cannon.
Are you Hungarian?
1870fps is pretty fast for BP! Muzzle 1917 ft lbs
The rifle appears to be light for its size. There seemed to be considerable recoil. Am I correct in assuming this?
Black powder rifles shove You rather than a kick of modern smokless rifles and a Hawken like that is about 9# imperial standard or 4 Kg. Metric
yes, 50 cal with a powder charge of 70g or more has some recoil. It kicks like 12 ga shotgun (disregarding automatic gas operated shotguns). that rifle weights a bit more than 9 lbs or 4 kg, not too light either.
wyomin50ball sorry that's my typo, was trying to say 70 grains of blackpowder.
wyomin50ball 70 g would surely not resemble a secure amount of powder, nor any manageable,so it was quite noticeable, that you initially thought to write ,,70 gr´´ , not ,,70 g´´.
Black Powder charges are expressed in Grains not grams at least here in USA
Talks to dog in Hungarian. Dog listens. My dogs, who have only ever heard English, just ignore me.
Those guns look pretty nice, but they're waaaayyyy too close in price to a semi-custom.
Hold on! I have to stop, as usual, and convert meters to yards. OK, done, proceed.
So sad. Nothing better than the Lyman Great Plains rifle that once sold for $569.00 for years.
ok what type of dogs.
Hungarian Vizsla
Maybe the modern copy is designed for conical bullets but in 1842 when the originals were made they were designed to shoot a patched round ball, for conical bullets were not in use !!!!
+TheDave570
Right. They were still using the traditional musket balls. Which appeals to my sense of the historical.
The only problem is you didn't prime your bore you should have fired a primer first a lot more accurate at least that's how I was taught
That is fine for range shooting or competition shooting but for hunting guns you load and shoot from a cold clean bore. 1st shot is the most important in hunting. Not many hunters start with a fouling shot before hitting the woods for a days hunt. Same goes for modern hunting rifles. Sight it in for first shot clean cold bore.
Good luck with your PhD
👍👍👍👌👌👌✌✌✌👏👏👏
I wish I had a nice dog like that....but I live in a small apartment...not life for mans best friend.
