dude, u gotta pick that bloody sausage roll up and eat it with ya hands like an Aussie haha... looks pretty awesome, cheers from Tasmania, Australia.
Yep. Gotta save some of that flaky pastry in the Beard for when you get a bit peckish before lunch!đ
100% when i seen him going for it with a fork i was shocked lol. Should have tipped the sauce over the top of it then picked it up and ate it. Maybe thats just my Australian bias though but i could never eat a pie or sausage roll with a fork haha
And smother it with tomato sauce
Yes itâs a hands-on thing
It's very unaustralian to use a fork and the sauce just goes over the top of it
As a Melburnian, can confirm the vibes and menu are on point.
If thatâs the honest truth then damn youâre all paying way to much for your sausage rolls!! $7đ€Ź in Brisbane your average bakery sausage rolls are $3.5-$4.5 and I mean a real sausage roll with real beef, onion, shredded carrot etc etc
I love Melbourne I've visited twice, 1st time was in 1995 first state of origin game at mcg. Second time was seeing Elton john at the Same venue 10th December 2022. I love Melbourne so much art everywhere â€â€â€â€â€â€â€â€
@@MMCPN cost about same here.. can get up to $8 at some cafes and that looked like an $8 sausage roll⊠But those high prices are to keep you and me away đ thereâs enough on offer without having to break the bank..
Sausage Rolls which are made in-house by a café or bakery are often the best. Better than the mass produced ones. We have made at home few times, not too difficult if you use the frozen pre made puff pastry.
That would be Aussie puff pastry of course! Not the American sweet stuff.
honestly even when it comes to mass produced ones, I will take No Name Brand or even Coles sausage rolls over FourNTwenty brand. The old Legendary aussie FourNTwenty are rubbish quality nowadays.

It's funny seeing that cafĂ© in Nashville, it has a typical dĂ©cor of a laid back Aussie cafĂ©, glad you liked the Sausage roll, it's more of a gourmet one than a regular sausage roll, good to see you like the coffee, Australia inherited it's "real" coffee from the Italians when they started migrating here, thank god we did, as we now have some of the best coffee anywhere, keep a look out for Campos if you can find it over there, it's a very nice product âââ
Campos is alright but Zentvelds is the best also Byron bay coffee co. But Zentvelds is awesome.
Ah man campos is the best!! Found it it woolies and its now my go to coffee đđđ
Yeah that is a gourmet snag roll - I guess they had to give it a bit of bling for USD$7. Looks alright though.
Well, yes and no. The espresso - fully Italian, yes. But in Italy, coffee is small and black, black, or black, in most cases during the day. Coffee with milk is considered more of a desert style coffee, maybe after dinner.
Australia and N.Z. were the first countries to specialise in and make an art of milk based coffees we have today. I remember drinking a cappuccino in Europe, no thanks...
The Flat White came from Australia/N.Z.
@@paulp1450 Got laugh at 'The flat white', otherwise known as 'coffee with milk' to the common people.
Everything from decor to menu and the food looked absolutely legit. Glad you enjoyed!
Even Ian's shirt is fitting đ
So true.. even the menu! Ha!
That's NOT a normal 'aussie' sausage roll and I can't say I have EVER seen most things named on the menu.
â@@davidhuett3579
Cafe's will do a more presentable style of sausage roll
Where as bakeries and servos do the normal long sausage roll, usually like 15cm-20cm, somthing like that.
And the only thing i saw on the menu that was different was the 'soda'
I dont even know what they have on a menu here for that, soft drinks?
@@NiceCleanGoona4549 The point is ... the great Aussie pie or sausage roll ISN'T something from a 'gourmet' shop .. it's the run-of-the-mill cheapo product that you would consume at a footy match.

Gourmet sausage roll. Not your standard long "bar" type sausage roll. Very similar to the ones you buy in Borough market that are absolutely banging.
Agreed it's not like the petrol station ones but they have similar looking ones at local coffee houses here.
Nothin wrong with a Mrs Macs from the 7-11 before you head home from the pub đ
That looked almost exactly the same as the ones my local farm shop here in Essex (UK) sell
It was about half the size though, the ones from the farm shop are twice as long, but to be fair, I struggle to eat a whole one of them so that was probably a better size.
â@@gorschtownthe servo pie gamble,is it gunna burn the skin from my mouth or break a tooth ...nothing better than a servo run
Did you deliberately schedule this video for dinner time in eastern Australia? Not fair đ Looks like they served you a real gourmet sausage roll there instead of the boring bog-standard ones. Yum!
I'm a pommy barsteward not an aussie but that's not what a typical sausage roll looks like here in the UK, usually they're longer than they are wide, like an actual sausage(usually with the skin removed but not always) wrapped in pastry. That looked like a slice from a gigantic sausage roll loaf, like a whole meatloaf wrapped in pastry. Looked pretty good though, tbf.
@@obijon7441 Normal sausage rolls in Oz are like yours. Maybe less pork and more beef sausage meat, though.
It did look better than Mrs Macs..

Looks like a great sausage roll. Just remember...not all sausage rolls are created equal.
As a Melbournian, the open warehouse, industrial aesthetic is very authentic. Thatâs a homemade sausage roll - I make them for my family just about every week!
Edit - after reading the comments in this thread about the sausage roll, let me help clarify a few things. Iâve been making home made sausage rolls for decades because Iâm celiac, so if I want a sausage roll (Iâm not giving them up), I have to make them myself.
Sausage rolls in Australia are normally made with sausage meat. Yours looks made with mince beef, probably because you canât buy sausage meat there. Thatâs why it tastes similar to meat loaf. Iâve also made home made meat loaf for decades. Here, you can mix sausage meat and minced beef together for meat loaf.
Itâs hard to tell, but even the pastry could be home made. Not sure if you sell off-the-shelf puff pastry in the States. Iâd say theyâve made it from scratch.
So here we have a USA based Aussie cafe getting their food as close as possible to authentic Aussie food while being somewhat restricted by on-hand resources - good on them!
I'm from syd but live in Florida. Sausage meat is available here. I buy it in the tubes from a few different supermarkets. Good sausages are hard to find though amd puff pastry in expensive. Last time I bought it, it was about $5 for 2 sheets.
@@gingerdrake9158 awesome - thanks for clarifying! Enjoy your cooking đ§âđł
Melbourne has the best coffee in the world, we have won awards for it đ
And the Best Scotch in Tassie!
Best Sausage roll in Sydney (Bourke St Bakery)
And many the Best Beaches everywhere else.
All also receiving awards... even world wide...
Last Melbourne coffee I had I threw it in the garden. It tastes like burnt poop. That was in Brighton
Last time I was in the U.S I couldn't find a decent cup of coffee anywhere. When I came back to Sydney Australia I had a 2 hour layover to my connecting flight to Adelaide. I went straight to the airport coffee shop and ordered a large flat white coffee. Brought tears to my eyes. I then ordered an Aussie meat pie with Rosella tomato sauce. I was home and I was happy.
I found Australian-grade coffee in 2 places in the US - Satsuma, in New Orleans, and Julius Meinl in Chicago
Dude you & your family really are becoming Aussie without even leaving the USA!!!
Itâs so cool to watch!!
the menu looks right for Melbourne, glad you liked the coffee. We go for flavour and richness rather than bitterness. We are very very serious about our coffee.

Ian, I think you nailed it. My comment was going to be that looks more like meatloaf in pastry. And you confirmed it, it's not really a sausage roll but meatloaf. But looked so darn good.
That is essentially what a sausage roll is, a type of what the US would call pork meatloaf wrapped in pastry. It gets its name because traditionally it was made from the same meat and herbs as a sausage rather than because it contained an actual sausage.

The sausage roll looks wonderful, home made, with a great golden pastry. Mass produced sausage rolls are longer, not as high and the meet can only been seen from either end (until you start eating). They are generally 4.5 ~ 6 inches long. Many cooks / bakers will vary the meat mix inside and some add herbs / spices. đ
And the cheap & nasty ones only have a tiny bit of meat if any at all & they substitute minced up day old bread flavoured with a beef extract to cheat the customers & you can taste the difference right away from a decent Sausage roll.
Trying the sausage roll is a quick way to judge a new bakery. Me personally, i go for the pepper steak pie đ
The meet đ
The best bakery's in Australia are usually run by Vietnamese. They seem to have a great way with making pastries for meat pies and sausage rolls, yum.
@@dansmith9724 ? I don't think i have ever been to a bakery run by anyone Asian and I've done the Highway 1 round trip around Aus. I'm going to say these types of bakeries your mentioning are probably more inner-city type areas where every second person is now Asian, and no that's not being racist or ignorant because if you've walked around any capital cities around Aus in the last decade, you will 100% agree! đ
