Korg M1 some custom patches and editing!

  • I found this KORG M1 in a pawnshop :) It was in rather bad condition: the internal battery died, most of the buttons did not work, some of them were broken and missing, the joystick was broken, the aftertouch did not work, some of the outputs did not work.. Someone painted the front panel with black paint.. badly :D
    I repaired almost everything except the joystick, because I don't have it :)
    So here are the results.
    I did not want to show the basic presets, this is already shown a hundred times. Here are a few of my presets and also shows deep editing of the patch. Perhaps people who have never edited the sounds on this synthesizer will get some ideas :)
    This style of text for the video was of course a little bit inspired by Red Means Recording :)
    His channel is awesome and if you haven't seen it yet, be sure to check it out!

    Such depth can be achieved in Combi mode! When i was young I saved up and bought a M1 brand new, the year they were released. It was my everything, my only synth and I used the sequencer for complex songs, ran it in multitimbral mode so each individual program was 2 voices max. It got the job done but nowadays I approach it differently as it can integrate into the studio as a single instrument and use all those layers. Still have it!

      yeah, and don't forget the keyboard itself, it is so much better than anything you can buy these days even in 3x price range.. Real mechanical keys and they are so nice to play.

    Great to hear some non-factory sounds, it seems that everybody assumes that the M1 is only capable of doing the classic M1 sounds but in fact it is capable of so much more. Bought my one when it hit the market and still use it. Once you start to overdub you can get some really beautiful things out of it. I think that on the whole, it sounds surprisingly warm and organic for being a digital synth. Now my dream is to get a few low cost MIDI modules (TX816, Roland D-110, U-220...) to run from the sequencer, to Ibreak out of the habit and the comforts of my DAW + Vst. It should be an interesting journey.

    • @SkinnyVampiress
      @SkinnyVampiress  Před 5 lety

      For $100 you will not be disappointed :) Even as a midi keyboard, it's cool. Very nice fully mechanical keys with aftertouch, etc.. But it is bulky and takes up a lot of space in the room.
      I think it's good for strings or pads (as of 2019), maybe bass.. and some pseudo-realistic retro sounds.
      But the editing is not that simple, everything is done through the menu.. If you want to use an external midi controller, you need one with SysEx support.

      @@SkinnyVampiress It's gone! In just few hours after it was added! I'm gutted... There is another one for ~200$ in perfect shape... Must save up and get one though... Your vid made my mind on what I need :) I'm new to synths, normaly a bass player, sludge/stoner/doom, but after I got my first keys I just gone wild. I got yamaha psr36 and yamaha pss 380 both in mint condition for about 60$ altogether and I manage to squeeze some decent dark ambient sounds from them. They are cool, as the synthesis (although limited) is controled with sliders, quick and easy.
      Still, I don't mind the way you create sounds on M1, I record on Korg D4, which is 4 tracker and digital effects processor (flangers and pitch shifters makes those yamahas much more alive), and it has very simmiliar input method. I actually enjoy it, I hate to use laptop when composing. It destracts me. Dedicated hardware is the way.

    • @SkinnyVampiress
      @SkinnyVampiress  Před 2 lety +1

      I agree... but if you want just a little resonance, you can use the exciter effect, it's different but anyway. and ringmod could be kind of faked with chorus 2 (or 1, I don't remember) where modulation can go to audio frequencies.. again, it is not exactly ring mod, but something like that. M1 lacks many features but it has a lot of samples to work with, don't forget osc pitch adsr and combis... with careful programming you can do a lot. @@SkinnyVampiress I have a Korg Kross 2 and have been making customised patches for various songs for use in my live shows, it wasn't until digital sampling technology improved and became affordable without having to sell your car, no house, to buy a Fairlight that synthesizors started sounding more alive and organic in my opinion...czcams.com/video/k_4PQYwWhoM/video.html

    Sorry if this comes across as completely and utterly noonish but how would I go about getting custom sound banks onto my M1 I’ve looked online and all I can see is digital/ computer screen representations

    • @SkinnyVampiress
      @SkinnyVampiress  Před rokem

      banks are stored in sysex files. usually. then all you need to do is to download a software that can send system exclusive messages, I used this: www.korgforums.com/forum/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=99291 or midi-OX but it is more complicated, you also need proper audio interface with midi-out, or midi interface. cheap usb-midi cables won't work sometimes, so you need normal interface. And then just follow the instruction, press receive on M1, send the sysex file from computer, it is very easy.

    Skinny whats your opinion about his synth , from what I'm listening to ... it sounds unreal

      @SkinnyVampiress  Před 5 lety

      It sounds great, but its engine is pretty simple, based on samples, so you can't do a lot..

      Thanks Skinny ... I did find a demo Korg VST everyone , says it sounds very similar ...Ive been playing around with it today creating patches ,I guess the M1 came with different sounds cards , if you buy the Korg M1 Vst you get them all ....very interesting ...heres a link if anyone wants to try it out www.korguser.net/m1le/download/@@SkinnyVampiress

    My M1 lost all of its sounds, and I don’t have the equipment to get anything loaded back onto it. Do you have any way of teaching how you created any of this?

    • @SkinnyVampiress
      @SkinnyVampiress  Před 3 lety +1

      First you need to change a 3v battery inside the M1, or it will not "remember" any of patches that you create.... then I would recommend to load factory .syx anyway, because programming everything from scratch is very long and not so easy to do with all menus and stuff.. You don't need any equipment to upload factory patches, just a sound card with midi out, or usb-midi cable, or any other midi interface... although some usb-midi cables are buggy and I won't recommend them unless you already have one. Or ask some friends maybe someone have midi on a computer... then just follow guides on the internet, it's actually very easy to do, and your M1 will be like new again.

    can you get me to put it on the internet through the keyboard to export the information inside those MSC cards not those feeling I'm talking about those others you have so I can import it into my Korg M1 keyboard because I don't have the cards physically I wanted to import them. I'm not referring to feeling I'm talking about the other cards. please.

    A neighbour calls the cops, they kick the door in, burst in pistols raised, step away from the synth! You stand up, and one of your minions drapes a black satin cape with a red silk lining over your shoulders, as you shamble off, James Brown style........

    FUCKING CZcams keeps giving me the same garbage over and over. I'm subscribed here, but I never heard about this till now. Im subscribed to 400+ channels, but I click reload, and its the same exact bullshit over and over. Fine. Fuck it. I'll hunt for good things myself.
    Some people spend thousands of dollars to go to fucking Disneyland. I'd spend the same to drink home-brewed hooch with Skinny and cast Magic Missile at the Darkness. But, I'm poor, so "hello from Texas"
