It actually looks like the psychedelic fever dream that the Toymaker Realm should be.
I was not a fan of this animation style, but, when you think about it, it kinda fits for this story.
I... hate how that actually makes sense
Damn it, it does.
It's one of the things I've been saying about this since images started coming out back in March, around the time of the screening at the BFI. Although my sense is that this mo-capped 3D style done by the Aussie team might be here to stay for future reconstructions, I don't think they will be as 'way out' looking as this one was. You wouldn't make, 'The Smugglers' for example in quite the same way.
Would've been way better with actual puppets tho
No it doesn't fit.. đ
Telltale presents... The Celestial Toymaker - Available September 2014
Thar style of game is actually perfect for doctor who
The Dollar Store Bin for Xmas.
? The Toymaker will remember that.
This is more like 1998 level, Reboot-style animation
â@@lewisharvey9109 THAR SHE BLOWS!
I actually don't mind the style and aesthetic mostly, it's just the facial animation or lack there of that bothers me.
Same
with better lip syncing itâd be great tbh
The problem is that these animations are usually made by a small team with very little time or money
yeah it kinda feels like dreamland but worse
Ian Levine fuming and self combusting rn
Good
HAHAHA, I casually forgot that man existed, he's probably having an aneurysm just thinking about this
....who?
â@@keelanbarron928Ian Levine is a big name in the recovery of Doctor Who missing episodes. He is also a bit of an egoistical type with very strong opinions on basically anything Doctor Who related.
When he originally watched Doctor Who in the 60s, he took meticulous notes of every scene and moment he could. These materials have become pretty valuable in reconstructions and other recreations, as they are sometimes the closest we can get to the original tv experience.
Regarding animations, he has a very strong opinion because he wants them to be faithful to the extreme. If a piece of duct-taped decorum were to fall of in a scene, he would want it to show in the animation. This is, of course, not realistic. This attitude of his has caused a few animation projects to fall through.
So you can imagine how this "recreation" would look to him, with it's abstract visuals and wonky animation. He would be seething.
Heâs also doing his own ai restorations
oh my, and I thought flash animations were as expressive as cardboard, this is a whole new level
Michael Gove and Neil Patrick Harris both did a great job at playing The Toymaker.
Edit: *Michael Gough đđ
Michael Gove never played the Toymaker.
Michael Gough?
Iâm glad Iâm one of the few Americans who knows who Michael Gove is, so I can appreciate how funny that typo is.
@@spencerraney4979 Michael Gove.. The Tory maker đ
Juat watched it recently and it was really enjoyable. Solid work from the animation team!
Solid work? It looks like a cheap G mod.
You misunderstand, â@@Robert-tl2vg, this animation is indeed solid, as in "stiff"
if this is solid work just watch any 3d animation on ytb ur mind will explode...
@@vrongi5707 Keep in mind, this animation team had a tight deadline to get this done. And they really had fun with it at the same time. It might not be like the lastest animated films in cinemas but it's still a fun watch.
@@Robert-tl2vgstill looks alright, Iâd take it over some of the 2d recreations weâve had over the years
I think using animation to recreate lost scenes and entire episodes is a great idea, I'd even like to see this done with some of the Big Finish stories. But they're not putting a whole lot of effort into this. I don't expect Pixar level animation, but there's people who can exceed this on their home computers. Indeed, perhaps the BBC should outsource this work to the fans
The animation style really works well with this story!
Bit late but okay loved this one of my fave animated stories
So, you finally remembered this came out already and decided to actually post a full trailer.
Anyway, I've seen it and believe it or not, despite the unique and occasionally flawed art style. I think this is a fantastic animation (not perfect, but very enjoyable) in fact, I think it actually improves upon many of the underwhelming aspects of the original story. Of course a bit more polish would be nice, and there are a couple notable areas for improvement.
However, I will now say this animation team is one that I would be happy to see tackle another story. At first I was worried when I heard it was the same team as Web of Fear 3, but this is a massive step in the right direction, and if the next story they handle makes improvements from this one, I think they could deliver a very solid consistently good product (though this one isn't too bad either).
Okay, itâs a change of pace from the 2D Flash animations of previous animated adaptations, but I will admit Iâm not thrilled by the character designs. I think theyâre a little too harsh on the eyes.
I think it was a mistake to make it in color
@@cameronheaton9900Nope. Not at all. You canât even spell the word "colour" correctly!
@@DrWhoFanJ it's spelt like that in the US
@@tzarg Itâs not spelled like that in any civilised country.

Y'all need to get your Disney friends involved in these animated specials.
CRYING
Not me thinking this was a video game
This looks like a creepy 90s PC adventure game that doesn't exist yet I really want to play
Looks amazing!
Not the kind of animation that I would have chosen. But it looks particularly interesting for this kind of Doctor Who story (at least the trailer).
quite scary update on classic story Looks brill đ
The new episode of The Amazing Digital Circus looks interesting.
I like The Celestial Toymaker
they certainly made some... choices... with the animation here
The animation was an excellent reinterpretation of a largely missing story. More like this, please!
This has got to go into the âClassicâ Who section of iPlayer!
It will in 18 months' time, but without any of the fascinating extra content from the BD release.
The Abominable Snowmen was added to iPlayer exactly 18 months after it released on DVD/Bluray, so I'd imagine this'll be added in December 2025.
I think the videogame style really fits in a story about games
I was expecting an animation style more basic but this actually looks really interesting. Watching the reconstruction to the Celestial Toymaker, i new the story could be so much better with more creative visuals and this definitely looks creative.
Only sad thing about this is that itâs only gonna work on a uk dvd player
are these animations for the early episodes where their footage was lost? are these episodes only possible with animation as the audio is the only thing on record?
Affirmative. Affirmative.
Yes, and yes.
Indeed, Indeed.
Correct, Correct.
at first I was skeptical but now I am very interested
This new animation of The Celestial Toymaker looks like a bad acid trip.... In a good way.
I kinda love this 1998-ass, ReBoot looking, retro-CG aesthetic happening here. :)
Well if that is out I hope it's going to be on Tubi. Cuz that's one episode I haven't seen.
No, itâs on BD only. And itâs four episodes, not one.
I hope they put Scream of the Shalka out again next.
Itâs really good, love the style, the only little thing for me is that Steven doesnât look that much like Peter, the others are good and you can tell who they are meant to be but Steven is too off, still enjoyed it though
Would be truly wonderful if this could be sold in Australia. Alas, both this and The Underwater Menace are UK/US only, for absolutely no discernible reason (not on any streaming services or any physical release in Australia).
Comes out August 7 here in Aus via Madman entertainment
@@JoshuaBattenMusic source? I haven't been able to track down any such news
@@JoshuaBattenMusic Thanks
Did I just take all the acid?
"We shall play endless games together" Clearly these are games that you play on the PS2
Looks better in black and white CGI - the Toymaker characters really work in CGI its just Steven and Dodo who look odd
Itâs not CGI, and it has no business being in B&W.
The style of animation fits the subject.
I'm interested.
On bbc iplayer?
Nope. Not for 18 months, and without the wealth of extra content from the BD.
The more traditional animated style would have worked better
Thanks for so interesting and special video as always đ
Gone through the first two episodes of this animation style and while it definitely doesn't work as well as the fan animated version of Episode 1, the animation for Episode 2 really does work in this story's favour. The card people are really brilliantly designed, even though it slightly removes the element of the story which is the most interesting which is that they are in fact real people made to be the Toymaker's playthings. I will say though, watch this as the colour 16:9 version, it certainly wasn't made for 4:3.
Feels more like a twisted metal Cutscene than doctor who
Why is there no digital release?
Why would there beâœ
@@DrWhoFanJ I don't have access to a DVD or blu ray player.
@@DrWhoFanJ and I want to be able to watch the episodes.
@@JustinAshbrook Literally impossible.
@@JustinAshbrook Then get them.
Itâs finally here I have been waiting for this
The animation style isn't perfect, but it's still a vast improvement on what was done for 'Web of Fear - Episode 3', and I absolutely love the way the scenes and sets are redone to fit in more with the weirdness of the Toymaker's realm. In some respects, this is an improvement visually on the original episodes! â€
I literally just saw this at the mall!
I have this on DVD. The surviving last episode is on the lost in time set and disc 1 in this set. Disc 1 are the black and white animations including the surviving last episode. Disc 2 are the colour animations.
BD*.
Did they cut the ennie Minnie miny no scene?
Would be great if it came out in DVD in USA, but itâs only available as a blu-ray. Shame.
It should only be available as a BD. There is zero purpose in DVDs any more.
What am I looking at im confused
The first part of the original episode was lost so they couldn't include it on iPlayer when they released all of classic who. They've recreated a few older episodes the same way.
Itâs a reanimated version of a lost episode whose footage is lost to time
@@archer2503The first three episodes of the original serial*. Do at least use the correct words when youâre explaining things!
â@@DrWhoFanJat least I'm offering a constructive answer to the question. Rather than nit picking and not adding anything to the conversation.
@@archer2503 Iâm not nitpicking. You used the wrong words. It was necessary that someone corrected you so you didnât keep making such errors. I took that responsibility selflessly. Youâre welcome.
When will it be on iplayer?
In 18 months' time, but without any of the very-interesting extra content on the BD release.
Love it! AWESOME!
it kind of looks like a telltale cutscene
â„ïžâ„ïžâ„ïžđ
What am I... looking at here, exactly?
I always prefer the still images over the animations
No-one intelligent does.
Will it come to iplayer?
In 18 months' time, and without the wealth of extra content from the BD.
it's giving dreamland
Hey no doing the Jodie logo weâre currently now in the new diamond age
I hope they keep using it tbh. I loved the Jodie logo and branding I love seeing that awesome logo reveal clip on the Blu-Rays.
That is the wording font from the diamond logo actually. It's only the Collection sets that continue with the Jodie logo.
@@mondasiancyberman1268 Russell has promised that it will remain for the Collection sets.
That isn't the jodie logo, it's the text and font from the diamond logo just without the diamond bit
@@rowanc88 i saw! I was so happy when he confirmed it lol
to be fair to the animation team i think they are doing this style for the more difficult ones so they can actually make them without becoming bankrupt
now this, is fun manifest
yeah i fw the artstyle
thisanimation style reminds me of doctor who Dreamland
Ted Danson's back and back in time a bit too.
People don't focus on the Animation just focus on the *"Creative Priorities of the Plot"* it WILL help U not to be bothered by the Animation
It's the same secret when it comes to the Cats movie in 2019
This is definitely an animation.
I've got this DVD, good story!â€â€â€
BD*
I would have preferred b&w 2D animation. The whole point of these animations is to recreate the original show -- that means no weird shots that absolutely weren't possible at the time with the BBC's resources.
Wrong on every single count.
@@DrWhoFanJ No, you're wrong.
@@c.j.nyssen6987 Nope. Never.
I mean I have already see. It but it was actually quite good art wise
Iâm intrigued
I wish they would have animated the missing episodes and edit in the "found" 4th episode, like several of the earlier lost episodes were done.
You could always just watch the three animations and switch to the surviving fourth. Thatâs still an option.
Just a thought, if in the future, collection box sets of seasons 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are made, this animation style could work. Just saying.
Not out in Australia...
If I don't see the First Doctor with his hands on his coat lapels in any of this animation, then we truly have lost what made this show special.
I loved this, itâs made was a pretty dull story a much more satisfying watch. Highly recommended.
Toy makers Kid is way more scary you know.
Itâs weird but it kind of works.
God, if there was any lost episodes, Iâm sad that we donât have. Itâs this one. I wish I couldâve seen the original. To see the original toy maker episodes I think wouldâve been very interesting because of how they wouldâve done certain things and the effects.
All the animation budget of Food Fight
its not too bad i mean its not the best but im just happy to watch it
Was this made 40 years ago?
did they get AI or something to maek the animation cause it looks as she as AI is
The animation was strange at first but it grew on me and I actually quite liked it by the end, the toys especially benefited from being more surreal rather than just people in clown makeup and the games became interesting gravity defying surrealism rather than just flat sets. My only problem is they made Steven look like Popeye where they so over emphasised his jaw
Way better than the Web of Fear animation, but I still prefer the 2D ones. Good to stuff tho.
So did they not even animate the lips moving!?
Directly from uncanny valley...
I am not a fan of that style, but there were some pretty cool and insane scenes and ideas I really enjoyed. That dance of the dolls for example. That was sick! (In a positive way). But still liked the 'cartoonish' animations better
Honestly folks, it's not as bad as it looks. The animation is creative and interesting, like the playing card king is literally a playing card which is cool, the set has a lot of scale and ambition. The only issues are the mouth movements aren't synced great, but you can ignore it after a while, hartnells barely in it, and the actual story (like pt3) can be a bit slow. Went in with low expectations, came out thinking it's worth a watch if you like the other animations
Also the reason the diehards hate it is that it doesn't even attempt to match what actually happened on screen, it's much grander and more interesting than that. Don't go in expecting strict copying of the telesnaps
@@markgorman8120There are no telesnaps to copy anyway!
Omg â€
Okay, whose bright idea was this?!
It's underuniverse, the animation style is actually fitting for the place.
They could've designed some of the enemies faces and Bodies better
These remake episodes need bigger budgets.
This looks amazing. Thereâs no reason why the Doctor, Steven and Dodo becoming animated figures canât be part of the canon here.
It's The Celestial Toymaker the ugly version, LOL.
I would have liked an art style that was more expressive for the human (or human looking in the toymaker's case) characters. Hopefully it's a bit better when you watch it
Impressive
BBC doesn't have the original tape, but I have access to it
I guess, I'm the God of Time huahahahaha
I like it!
U should have made the toymaker prettier. Now how will he live upto Neil Patrick Harris ?đ
